You can sort of control the flow of goods by using warehouses set to empty. The AI pathfinding will always seek the closest route to its next destination, so without some sort of way to control which goods are being shipped where, they will all choose the closest port / airport. Doesn't matter how many ports you build, they only see the one. BUT with warehouses, you can greatly increase the efficiency of the flow of goods by providing ample warehouse space near the production buildings, direct lanes of traffic (highways, trains) to the next set of warehouses at the export building you want them to use. iF you had your Oil ware house, plastic ware house next to one port, they would leave that warehouse and hit that close port. Same for the other industry goods. I have been obsessed with supply lines in city skylines. The game is not so much about designing efficient supply lines like transport fever, but its an enjoyable challenge to me to be able to try to manipulate the flow of goods like that.
Ah, I've been controlling the flow by dividing the roads up, making it where literally the only path trucks can go is specific ports, so I roughly figured out the limit for a port and split up the roads so that they can't go anywhere else without passing by the port I rather they use. My roads are a spaghetti nightmare because of that, but I kind of like it that way, cars flowing through roads wildly weaving around each other.
trains are the same way, it's the limits of the ai even the train is awkward place on cargo ports, it near the water although should be closer to the road. it's a fun game although it needs a little help with cheating or rework for ai, so it knows to bypass with train tracks that has 4 or more rails, and a bunch of things to list
Honestly, i think the main issue with so much traffic in this game is that nothing can take more than 1 vehicle at once. In real life warehouses can take like 5+ trucks at one time, loading and unloading where as in the game everything has to wait, on the street, until every single vehicle ahead of it takes its individual turn interacting with the building before turning around and going home.
There's also no communication for business. Individuals (to my knowledge) don't pick the closest job to their house and the closest store to their current location. There should absolutely be a 'we're full, go somewhere else' function for trade hubs when an industry tries to send off a truck.
@@stargate525 Yeah, this series has piqued my interest in Cities: Skylines, but also it seems like a headache to babysit the AI in this game. I would have hoped for a smarter traffic AI in a game primarily about managing traffic.
@@thejedimaster32 well the game isn’t primarily based on traffic; it’s 7 years old and built by a very small team using a fairly limited game engine, so there was only so much they could do with the traffic. that said, the game is a joy once you learn the ins and outs of the weird traffic AI :)
Kibitz, quick tip: Warehouses can't store raw materials. Not oil, not ore, not crops, and not logs. Only industry-specific storages, which can be placed outside of those areas, can do that. Also lane mathmatics are important - they make everything look super neat. That's more important than anything. They also improve efficiency by forcing vehicles to merge across miles of road rather than clogging lanes and blocking other destinations but that's less important.
It would awesome if you submitted your city to Biffa Plays Indie Games, for his City Fix series. He could probably fix all your traffic problems for you!
Kibitz could you vary the tolls so that the closest airport terminals have the highest tolls, so there’s an incentive for traffic to spread out more evenly?
The AI pathfinding will just pick a different single one to use instead, since the destination with the best score judged on distance price etc will take the majority of traffic.
They always go to the closest. Just scale down everything, but copy it multiple times. So you have more tiny airports/ports close to each cluster of industry.
About the “blocking lasers” bit of your advert, just a little PSA but never trust that, lasers (especially the cheapo ones in pointers) produce a lot of IR and even if the visible spectrum is blocked and it looks safe, it may still blind you. Sorry, Longtime styropyro fan
I realized. i watch your channel. because your narration is beyond anything I ever heard on the platform. It truly makes your videos unique. DONT EVER CHANGE.
I think you need to give some love to your vanilla non-expansion industry and specialisations too. You have vanilla farm, mining and oil special products to handle too as well as the products and special-expanstion goods too. I'm sure some of the traffic will relate to those as well. I always wonder what you industry overview imports/exports look like at key points in you videos too.
Might be worthwhile putting a cargo port in the water on the other side of the hills by the oil district to ship that out specifically. That'd take a nice quarter of your road traffic to the ports out of the loop. EITHER THAT or it'll create horrifying traffic in the oil district again...
One incredibly useful thing when dealing with backup at cargo hubs is this: provide access roads for delivery vehicles that reach the hub at an angle instead of going parallel. It's the 90° turns that make these back up.
A way to mitigate the trucks issue, could be making an underground highway specifically for trucks. It wouldn't do anything for the actual problem, but it would mean regular traffic isn't being stopped by a giant line of trucks.
Thank you for your videos, really enjoy them. Such a good balance of teaching, humor, good decisions, bad decisions, and entertainment. You never fail to deliver.
you always compact your export locations so they always go to the one closest of the 3 you cram together overflowing the tiny roads you lead up to it because its one road leading to both, so the closest is always the closest for everyone instead of having an export location in every corner of the city so that the route from production to export is as short as possible and closest to destination is different depending on starting location this also gives different roads used for each, so less likely to get clogged ... why did you put all those warehouses on the same road at this point your gridlocks are just intentional
Kibitz, have you tried turning on the advanced AI for Traffic Manager? It allows cars to recalculate their route based on traffic, so if one lane is uber busy, it'll try a different path. It's hard on performance but will fix the weird behaviours you're having where people only pick one terminal/stand.
kibs why not make a forth runway, 2 will be take off export only. 2 will be spilt for landed imports and landed exports. this way you wont have the issue of planes getting stuck.
U cant do that the ai isnt smart enough and regardless theyd be inefficient because every city is different and exports and imports are something u wanna know first
I'm completely out of this game since 2018, so maybe what i'm about to say will maybe not work. It would be cool, if you could set up an industrial zone, which goods are being delivered to a warehouse. And from this warehouse the goods are being delivered to a train station within the industrial zone, which tracks only lead one way to an airport train station / port train station, so the goods are forced to use the train to leave the city. It's important the train station has no outside connection, so no outside trains will come into your city, unloading their goods and cause traffic issues on the highways. Also it would be cool if you would use more in-city-trains in general, so the goods don't have to be transported on the road (also is realistic, because goods on train in real-life is so much cheaper...normally...when you have time). So it could be possible, that you could set up multiple ports for each industrial zone. Or even more for just one (like oil or so). But as i said: I didn't play the game for like...nearly 4 years, so i don't have any clue, whether this is possible, or just brain farts of mine, which doesn't work at all.
your map is a mess of spaghetti junctions which makes the unofficial armchair road engineer inside me want to die please make more road videos this is amazing!

The industry needs more workers. You can't get things done without workers! Maybe a large high density zone by the port? It can be connected to the jobs by Metro or passenger train.
you should enable automated tolls and then make the speed limit on the tool booths unlimited so traffic moves through them faster and doesn't cause a jam by waiting for cars to go through
This is the kind of stuff I have been hunting for - never really seen many others who go for the as-much-as-money-as-possible route and get stuck with the thousands of trucks!

I find restricting certain roads to lower speeds help with diverting traffic onto highways, or roads with more lanes that can handle the traffic, placing a 20 mph limit In Urban areas stops heavy traffic, also makes the people happy as the noise is reduced. Should have a play see what you think.
Kibits, have you considered adjusting your tolls to balance out the traffic to the airport? Make the least popular road free while the most popular the most expensive. This should help balance the trucks? Test on tolls!!
Consider using a single entrance to transpo or warehouse hubs with multiple exits. I.e. think of a large circle of warehouses/terminals, all along a single multi lane road, but with exit ramps after each warehouse/terminal. That way the AI doesn't need to make a decision about which entrance to take to a factory, and they are able to exit the loop immediately upon picking up or dropping off. Fyi - I don't own this game, but this is just common sense picked up from every airport layout ever + more exit ramps 😁

This is what Simcity could have been if they didn't ruin the last game. It will be a while before people get nostalgic enough to want a new Simcity game.
Try using the 'Old Town Policy' independently for the warehouses and the cargo hubs so traffic will not try to shortcut past the warehouses just to go to a cargo hub
70% of the world is covered in water. Trade by ship is still one of the best ways for transportation for a reason. We've had thousands of years of experience in boating, so it is one of the best ways to do it. Thing is, that does mean that transporting is REALLY centralized around ports.

I never really understood the need for blue filtering glasses. I mean, you are staring at a screen emitting all sorts of light, including blue, then you buy glasses, to filter out the blue portion. I would start that process one step earlier and take the blue light out of the emitted light of the screen. Doesn't that make a lot more sense?

Decentralization is the solution to traffic in Cities Skylines.
