What Rep Roach said is so correct, paraphrased he said something like, “The storm is hard, the recovery is so much harder.” This is true, especially so for those who flooded, but whose houses frames weren’t destroyed. The cost of maintaining your entire life while repairing your home are so very hard to navigate. You still have to pay your mortgage. You have to manage repairs when workers are slim, you have to rent another home with diminished supply, and you’ve lost irreplaceable memorabilia, not just “items” that are replaceable. The emotional and financial tolls are incredible. If it’s roof damage, you continue to flood every time it storms until you can get properly tarped. You have to fight for insurance payouts even when you have full replacement and flood insurance. It’s a nightmare that lasts years in some cases. We faced it in Irma. It’s doable, but it takes years and sometimes you aren’t sure your finances can stretch bc you are competing with every other damaged homeowner. I’m praying for everyone, but more so for the ppl who weren’t wiped out bc it’s actually harder to repair flood damage than to rebuild a home that’s deemed unrecoverable. Maybe this Rep’s soon to be realized “lived experience” will help lawmakers understand the problems Floridians face. Congress should have dealt with this after Irma and Michael. They need to make the changes to insurance laws, giving options for all constituents rather than focusing all their efforts on social, “woke” and Disney wars.

Democrat policies the last 3 years with CONvid has led to the shortages, job losses, inflation, etc that we have been experiencing. And due to this hurricane, it is now 100 times worse here in SWFL. No gas. No food. No water. Nothing!
I'm at a lost, trying to understand why America is so obsessed in building wooden structure especially on the cost line??? There shouldn't be any wooden structure on or near the beach in south Florida! I see in Oklahoma every year; wooden building are crushed like match box, and they rebuild the same crap. Why can't they build concrete building with block and steel, and proper anchor into the structure of the building to secure the roof. Isn't it cheaper to build tough and strong once? Than to constantly rebuilding each year with the wooden crap!!!
I saw what Katrina did to several of those “Hurricane proof” structures in Mississippi in 05/06, marketed to people after Camille nailed them in 69. Nothing but a slab with girders sticking out. Now, I realize construction techniques have improved since then, over 50 years, but one thing is certain, nothing mankind builds is impervious to the forces of nature. It’s generally not a question of ‘if’, but more one of ‘when?’. Wherever we are, there shall it also be.
It's interesting that in venice Italy also called sinking citie, but much of Italy is around the sea ,and they do build up on hills more when possible, and stone structures especially near the sea. Caroline has flooded a lot and there are some nice two story structures where the water kind of just flows underneath and back out. But of course nothing no matter how well built is 100 percent in this crazy world. God bless Florida and all those living on coastal places be safe.

We moved from Michigan to Fort Myers in September 2021. Now we have nothing left at Fort Myers Beach, Sanibel, Captiva, etc. No beach front left. Everything destroyed. Tourism destroyed. Thankfully we lived just far enough inland to avoid the surge and flooding. We were not in an evacuation zone. We were on high ground (28ft). This hurricane was monstruous. The winds were insane. Never seen anything like it in my 50 years. Where is FEMA? People need help. People need rent relief. Many lost their cars, jobs, etc. People can’t get gas to go to work. Many employers no longer exist or are without power. Many had to evacuate. They can not pay for hotels and rent at the same time. It’s ridiculous. Something needs to be done. Agree we are given hurricane prep lists by various media supplies. Be Prepared. Its called "hurricane season" for a reason. Even if you do not have much money, you can buy a flaslight one payday, batteries the next. Make a small note book with all contacts, emails, phone numbers, important numbers of bank account, IRA, Investment accounts. Put the notebook in a ziplock bag. Prepare a TO GO Emergency backback just for a 72 hour supply some water bottles, easy snacks, utensils for tuna pack or whatever all put in a 2 gallon bag to keep waterproof and clean. Each person has their own. If you have children color code the backbacks for each and they have their favorite snacks, activity books, crayons whatever. Parents handle extra supplies if child is small. Then when notified of need to evacuate you are ready. Last minute, put all checkbooks, cash, credit cards, phones and other electronics in waterproof ziplock. Then grab bags and go.
It is an Apocalyptic destruction, very sad some persons lost their life in this natural Phenomena, and the material losses are huge. My prayers for all the affected.
When I moved to Florida, I didn't decorate, I threw away a lot of stuff.. I don't really have any valuable antiques or family airlumes and if I did, I'd probably leave it somewhere safer and not on the coast. I just can't see myself doing all that in hurricane alley. My house is plain looking and I gave all that up to be near the beach. I kind of treat most of my furniture and things expendable. I even buy used stuff a lot that I won't get attached to. Kind of sad, but this is Florida and I don't want that kind of heartbreak. But I packed my cats and placed my important papers in a fire/water proof envelope and left for Pensacola during this storm once I knew the track would be nowhere near there. It was weird too because not a lot of people fled to the direction I did. The roads were clear and it was a peaceful drive. Everyone trusted that they wouldn't be in the path too much. You have to watch that track closely every hour knowing that it could change at any minute. Never get complacent in this state. If the track is at least 40 miles from your location, plan to leave in case it changes to your direction. And follow Denis Philips on Facebook who gives updates on the tracks constantly.

Any existing insurers must start to refuse to insure building right along vulnerable coastal areas, because sea level will rise and disastrous storms will continue to grow more frequent. Trillions to rebuild where there is simply no wisdom in rebuilding. It’s time to face a hard truth which should not be politicized, because this truth will affect everyone.

Democrat policies the last 3 years with CONvid has led to the shortages, job losses, inflation, etc that we have been experiencing. And due to this hurricane, it is now 100 times worse here in SWFL. No gas. No food. No water. Nothing!
Love and compassion and whatever possible can do, encourage those in Florida, they will get through this yes.
Most are made from block, etc, now. I live here and have seen them being built. Most that were destroyed were old.
God is still in control
...sorry for those that lost their lives and those that lose their belonging
It's interesting that in venice Italy also called sinking citie, but much of Italy is around the sea ,and they do build up on hills more when possible, and stone structures especially near the sea. Caroline has flooded a lot and there are some nice two story structures where the water kind of just flows underneath and back out. But of course nothing no matter how well built is 100 percent in this crazy world. God bless Florida and all those living on coastal places be safe.
I living in Barbados and tune in to local 10 news and from where I stand my heart goes out too all those families who lost their love ones and those who lost their homes...
If someone want somewhere to stay for a short time till they could rebuild my home is open... I have a 2 bedroom house could accommodate a little family..
For those that think I lack empathy y’all are totally incorrect. Throughout my lifetime I’ve quite often helped out those less fortunate yet I’m a senior citizen on a fixed income thankful for what I receive. I’m just frustrated with folks not focusing on the reality of harm and damage these hurricanes are capable of. I’ve lived in Florida now 22 yrs and have been ever so conscious of such.🌪
I sympathise.
Heartbreaking !! 😢. Praying for all of Florida. 💜. Feel so sad for the people that perished but why would they stay ?? Your life is more important than your belongings !!
I agree yet some I'd think couldn't afford to go,no car, won't leave there property, disabled, wouldn't leave pet's ect to maybe it won't be really bad or been there before.
For me I couldn't afford to leave at least for long,I have livestock & they have to eat..

I own a home in Bonita Springs. I'm fortunate. Only lost a few palm trees. This is devastating. I'm a professional drone pilot and have video of these areas from earlier in the year. This will take years to rebuild. Spencer is SPOT on with the fact this storm shifted and changed at the last minute. My daughter was down there riding it out. I was watching in real time on radar..
Salute to the
Coast Guard.
Most definitely and they are still out there rescuing people. There will be a time that these places will be back up and running. Florida natives are stronger than we know.
Can we ALL agree to NOT build homes on barrier islands any longer....you know, those islands God gave us to be the first line of defense against raging storms. With clear instructions to not build a foundation on SAND... but on rock!!
I use to live in Fla. 15 years ago & I know

Don't they know that they have God-created annual strong hurricanes in Florida that will wipe out everything they have year after year after year non-stop??? Don't bother to rebuild. Just get out of there for good. Learn to be smart and be responsible for your own actions and decisions.

No one should have to worry about this stuff right now. Evacuating the hospitals took jobs away too. Major disaster physically, mentally and financially.
And the news kept stressing it was going to land in Tampa

A lot of the evacuees head to, Orlando. They have a place to go, many choose to ride the storm out and some just can't afford to leave.
Orlando [Orange county] is a disaster zone, it was a deadly decision to attempt to evacuate there. Most of the deaths there were evacuees who died in their cars. Bad call.

It is an Apocalyptic destruction, very sad some persons lost their life in this natural Phenomena,

It’s wonderful how quickly the people of Florida are receiving help.
Yes it is blatantly obvious isn't it. If only it was the case for other communities.

If you are walking in flood waters - remember you can get urine infections - we have many floods in Australia - and its common for all the brave men who wade in the water saving people - so if you get a sore back get some help before it gets worse

Suggestion , make all housing in hurricane prone areas to be sturdy .. use cement and blocks as walls and bricks for roofing’s … so those homes can withstand category 10 hurricanes ….
Using shingles in hurricane prone areas is not using common sense at all … .. just an opinion , not to embarrass the home builders. .. cements, hollow blocks and bricks are more sturdy materials for housing ..for hurricane visited states in USA
