He didn’t have breathing control. He took breaths 3 strokes in a row at some points (left, right, left) which is almost unseen. Although a lot of distance swimmers do double breathe into walls which is also bad. But he kept an incredibly fast and consistent pace
@@theangryegg8458 with a good enough technique, you don't lose much streamline and speed from breathing twice going into a turn. For these guys, it's way more important that they get enough air to maintain a high speed coming out of the turn without building up lactate
@@themountain3461 yeah and that’s why you build up breath control. You’re still losing speed. If we were ever caught double breathing on my team we’d have to do an ungodly dry land exercise after practice. Made us champions.

Shouldn't count as a wr on a 25m pool, that's twice as many kick off the wall turns. Great swim obviously just think records should only count on 50m pools.
They've got screens at the bottom of the pool near one of the walls. Officials also hold a board with the number of laps left on it and you can see it at 4:46
This is hilarious. Wellbrock lost the Olympic gold medal not 5 months ago swimming 32 seconds slower. Guess he was glad Bobby Finke wasn't in the race to flash by him in the last 25 meters? LOL!
This was the world record for the short course where the pool length is 25 meters. The Olympics are swum in a 50 meter pool; hence half the number of turns and therefore slower.
