Thanks for watching, the same two comments keep coming in so to save your fingers and rather than replying to all individually, I've addressed them here: 1) This wrap is NOT fibreglass, it doesn't require wetting prior to application. 2) Yes, I applied the wrap header to tip rather than the other way round. While this is considered the wrong way around, it helped me adjust and get the positioning I wanted at the tips. I've had it for years like this, no issues. I'm not a mechanic, I'm just a guy sharing my hobby and passion for my bike, hope you enjoy.
Riding Digital thanks mate wish I new you could get what you had before I bought mine. How much was it mate and where can I get it. Thanks in advance mate. I appreciate it
My only advice would be to torque the exhaust flange nuts 100-120 ft lbs and if you wrap the Heat Tape from the Pipe end (exhaust) the tape will overlap the other way, meaning the raised Lip isn't facing the oncoming rain , mud, debris, etc. Thanks.
honestly, I've never done it before. I'm thinking about doing it which is why was watching the video. maybe it also reduce the chance of it fray? but if you have it on for several years it probably doesn't matter too much.
Wetting any wrap can help it stretch, causing it to shrink and tighten more when dried. Wrapping from the other way to how it was shown means the rain will be able to run downwards.
Wrapping wet is good practice for stretch & shrink after drying. But wrapping from the tail end only keeps it from getting dirty/rain running correctly on certain shaped pipes. Shorties tend to go forward & out, then back. You're only getting the effect at the back end of them.
Ceramic paint is a temporary treatment. It doesn't hold up well at high heat. It will crack, flake and turn gray after a short while. What retaining straps did you use?
In a different tutorial, they recommended wetting the material with water before wrapping... Once wrapped and put on the bike, they said to go for a ride to let the water 'burn off' (evaporate) which helps the material to contract and stay wrapped tight... cool video though! Looks great! Can't wait to wrap my exhaust!
Stephen Smith Hey man, yep there are some wraps which need water activation, the design engineering titanium I used is a different material (I think they say it's volcano ash??!) but doesn't need wetting, I think it might make it easier! Good luck! RD
i have to agree with some others you should wet the wrap first (soak in a bucket of water for about 1/2 hour) and always start at the bottom and work up!
Hello! You're absolutely right on the wrap direction, I did it the wrong way around. Whoops. It's holding up fine though! On the wetting part, this isn't a normal fibreglass wrap, it's soft and checking instructions from the manufacturer it is specified as not to wet before installation. So I got one bit right! Thanks for the comment, good to know someone is keeping an eye out for us all! 👍RD
well done my friend nice to see you did not get the hump when people try and help i wrapped the pipes on my xl 1200 custom and had to wet them first i took them off through (did not like ). but i think its great you can stand a bit of criticism. well done that man.
He wrapped them backwards folks. Just like shingles on a house, start from the bottom-up. That leaves no edges/lip for water or anything else to sit on or creep in.
had mine wrapped since 2015 the tape has frayed away underneath the pipe leaving a loose free end halfway along the pipe. Suggestions to fix it. Great video. One comment was to wrap wet and in reverse plus using blue lock tight I’ll read the reviews. Many women Harley riders in the Lake District these days. Ex Ducati rider, Brit living in US. I ride a Harley XL 883 Iron
Thanks for the video. I'm probably going to be ordering these wraps by the end of the week. I have an aftermarket exhaust but the heatshields that came with it don't work very well and I don't want to melt my pants onto the pipe. Would you recommend keeping those on with the wraps, or just remove the heatshields and go with the wraps??
I chose to wrap over the heat shield because i liked the chunkier look and the finishing cap on the pipes needed the shields on to fit. Never had any issues with this set up. Either way they'll still get hot but it will take the searing edge off!
oh dear i hope you don`t want to take those bolts out in the future you should have used BLUE locktite. red locktite makes them nearly impossible to remove !.
Wow, Titanium looks great! Sweet bike, too! I need to rewrap the pipes on my Bonnie and have been debating what shade to use. One question: Has the color faded much? I've seen other vids where they finish with a silicone spray, but considering DE's wraps are about 3X the cost of others on Amazon, I'm wondering if the spray is unnecessary.
First of all he did wrap them backwards, secondly you only have to soak fiberglass wraps. Design Engineering -the company that makes these "titanium" wraps say it's not necessary to soak these as the fibers are much more flexible than fiberglass. You can check their UA-cam channel for that. They also recommend spraying their silicone sealant to keep them looking and wearing better. But very nice bike, music eh I prefer some rock. Also he didn't replace the exhaust gaskets between the port and the pipe.
I could be wrong but is it not better to soak the wrap first and put it on wet? This would lit it shrink as it dries making the end result much tighter fitting wrap. If I’m wrong I would really appreciate someone letting me know. Thank you in advance.
Love the AN pipes. Question, did those metal ties come with the kit ir did you get them seperate? Usually the ones given with wrap kits are not as wide. I prefer the wider ones like you had
Your Sporty is gorgeous, mate. I'm pretty familiar with how to polish and wax painted metal but yours look extremely good. I noticed that you have no logos on your tank. I that a repaint? Seriously, what is your secret to that amazing shine?
You should of wrapped from the bottom & back to the intake .... Allowing water & debris to not get stuck or forced under wrap. May all your days be Harley days🖤🧡🖤 Safe travels 🙏♥️🐾🐾🇦🇺
had to buy the metal ties separately. the Design Engineering ones cost a fortune so got some on eBay for a fraction of the price. I've used both and the eBay ones were absolutely fine. Good luck! RD
Re wrap wet, start at the exhaust end. and use black next time. Oh and that music? Don't make me remind you again that its not quite harley material. Not saying its not nice. Its just leans a bit left.
I'm in dilemma of deciding which one should i pick for myself? Like I'm confused in between these models give me your opinion on it! As you are experienced, (1) Harley iron 883 (2) indian scout (3) Harley 48 (4) indian scout bobber.
wraps holding up just fine, no blemishes or fraying. In the video I was recapping after circa 5k miles and the pipes were slightly corroded as expected but no cracks or issues
You wrapped the pipes in the wrong direction. you're supposed to start at the outlet side and move to the inlet side. So the wind doesn't blow the wrap loose because of the direction of the overlap being forward, instead of backwards.
Hey man thanks for the video, killer look ! Did you notice any improvement on how much heat is radiating from the exhaust ? Im thinking about wrapping mine but not sure if it will damage the chrome or eventually crack the pipe
thanks! It makes the pipes hotter for sure, and it will damage chrome over time. I've had no issue with cracking myself but I decided it was worth the risk for the look I wanted. Mines been wrapped now for 5 years. good luck
your right, there are reasons not to wrap, but tbh there are probably lots of reasons to not do many things ive done on the bike. I liked the look and after 5 years everything is fine
Please NO MORE MUSIC for crying out loud why does every UA-camr put annoying music in an instructional video? I would rather have silence. Is it just me or not?
Yes you're right, I applied the wrap header to tip rather than the other way round. While this is considered the wrong way around, it helped me adjust and get the positioning I wanted at the tips to align them. I've had it for years like this, no issues.
Hi Jim, you're right on starting the other end, some others pointed out it reduces the risk of dirt getting into the wrap. I added pinned comment to highlight this. This wrap isnt fibreglass resin however and specifically says to wrap dry. Its Design Engineering Tintanium wrap.
Asbestos has been illegal to sell and use in the UK for decades, if it were asbestos I'd be wearing a hazmat suit. I think you mean fibreglass, the wrap I'm using isnt fibreglass either (also why its wasnt wet when applies) so not a problem and no gloves were specified on the instructions.
you fucked up shoulda used water. started from the end and worked towards the motor and after it dryes spray it with a high heat clear sealent spray specifically for exhaust wraps and it will last much longer
Unless you are running a turbo you want to get as much energy out of the exhaust gas as quickly as possible to reduce the necessity for restrictive silencers which cause back pressure, sapping power...
Back pressure comes from a 'restriction' to flow, nothing runs 'better' with restricted breathing! Ever see a GP bike with a wrapped exhaust? You might want to ask your 'mechanic' to explain his logic and see if he waffles a lot!!
Manoo42 You are wrong. Gay-Lussac's Law is one part of the ideal gas law and so explains how gases change when volume is held constant. As the temperature increases, the molecules in the gas move faster, impacting the gas's container more frequently and exerting a greater force. This increases the pressure. So if the heat inside the pipe is hotter, the pressure and velocity will move proportional to one another. This would mean you dump hot air out the exhaust faster.
beauty of owning my own house mate, I can put my bike where I like! I actually converted my garage into a man cave, that's where I store the Harley - the doors open straight out onto the driveway 👍🏻

Riding Digital thanks mate wish I new you could get what you had before I bought mine. How much was it mate and where can I get it. Thanks in advance mate. I appreciate it
Hey buddy, sorry didnt get a notification on your comment. Its design engineering titanium wrap, I put mine from Daemon Tweaks from memory 👍🏻
yep, holding up fine, no fraying or dirt issues
Riding Digital thanks mate I appreciate it
i love it when people put their bike in their room
In this case, I built the room around my bike 😊
My 09 iron is behind the couch! Lol
I live on Oahu, and even covered, the weather is extreme for metal.
My only advice would be to torque the exhaust flange nuts 100-120 ft lbs and if you wrap the Heat Tape from the Pipe end (exhaust) the tape will overlap the other way, meaning the raised Lip isn't facing the oncoming rain , mud, debris, etc. Thanks.
Agree, I'd wrap the other way next time, and agree on torquing correctly (with some Ritelok too!). thanks for watching
maybe i'm wrong, but i thought starting from the rear is less likely to catch dirt between each layer.
honestly, I've never done it before. I'm thinking about doing it which is why was watching the video. maybe it also reduce the chance of it fray? but if you have it on for several years it probably doesn't matter too much.
Actually you were right, appears you should start from the tips and work back, not sure how much difference it makes but good spot! RD
Put the wrap in a vise on a work bench , pull back hard on the exhaust wrap it TIGHT
Bike looks awesome with the wrapped pipes.
Very tasteful addition in my opinion. Looks bad ass and serves a good purpose. Good job.
thanks buddy
Pipes wrapped this way is how I'd do it... Still showing some exhaust. And color pipes or heat wrapped looks cool together
Good job! and good taste in mods. Beautifully done
Thanks buddy 👍🏻
Start from the rear and wrap it wet.
Why do you wrap it wet? Would this technique mess with a chrome exhaust?
No need to soak titanium wrap.
Yeah u dont wet this type of wrap.
Thanks, I'm watching all the wrap video I can before trying it myself - Moto Guzzi Stone 850 :)
Beeeeautiful bike and the wrap looks sick, love the combo
thanks buddy 👍
Ceramic paint is a temporary treatment. It doesn't hold up well at high heat. It will crack, flake and turn gray after a short while. What retaining straps did you use?
HUh..I designed the MAGNAFLOW/ARLEN NESS badge on them pipes back when I was their Art Director. Haven't seen these on a bike yet.
Well, it's a damn fine badge 👍🏻
@@ridingdigital lol, thanks bud. Wrapping my CB650 Bobber exhaust this weekend for a new build video. So I stopped by here first. Thx for the tips. MP
I believe you should wrap from the end of the pipes so as to prevent water and dust to get in the crevices
Thank heaven straight to the point.informative..didn't think it would suit but jheez looks amazing.thanks
You wrapped in reverse turn the tape the other way up and apply like a bandage to keep max tension.
You are absolutely right, thanks for the tip! RD

Harley Custom in the UK, they also ship worldwide

Hey, yes you are right for resin fibreglass based wraps - the design engineering wrap I'm using here isn't either and uses a dry technique 👍
Always wear protective gloves , mask and glasses when working with fiberglass
agree, although the wrap I'm using isn't fibreglass
Nice ride 🚲💨💨
What ties did you use? The metal zip ties I got are junk.
I bought these;

thanks. I got them a long time ago from I think Deamon Tweaks separately from the wrap. No zips came with the wrap
why did you wrap it because of the heat or the different look? does it make a lot of difference the wrap for the heat?
just for the look tbh, I liked the vintage style

always wet first, completely soak, always wear gloves, always start from the rear, preferably spray with silicone spray after.
ProfessorM. What’s the silicone spray for??
This is titanium wrap.. you don't wet this stuff only the fiberglass wrap you wet
This wrap doesn't use any of that stuff
Heya mate great vid!!what was the length of wrap you were using?ive got some Vance Hines short shots
thanks! I cant find the email confirmation when I bought it but I'm sure it was 25m and I used it all
Question why did you put it on thanks great vid
just because I liked the look for my custom project, no practical reason!
Story mate what I meant was did you do it because it didn’t get as hot on your legs because on my Harley that’s what I’m talking about doing
Great looking bike. I could give that a good home No probs
What is the song that plays around 6:48?
Hey buddy, sorry I missed your question! it's listed in the description, think it's by Kronicle!

Do you need to soak these titanium wraps?
nope, just wrap and strap 👍🏻
For a better look start at the end and work your way to the manifold and your suppose to wet the wrap first

Leans a bit left hate to shit on your parade but most musicians are leftist. But yeah music is lame.
Uhh who cares watch for content not music
how long was the pack of wrap you bought for your pipes?
The wrap was 2" wide 35ft long Design Engineering Titanium Exhaust wrap! Good luck RD
Heat Wrap over heat shields?
yea wasnt preferable but needed to have the finished endcap, looked awful without it
Yikes....can't find the O2 sensor on my 1989 XLH 1200???
;)~
how long does it take to actually wrap them??
About an hour and a half to remove, wrap and refit the pipes I'd say.
Why did you wrapped your motorcycle's exhaust?
improves performance (apparently), stops burning my boots on the pipes, pipe glow from the rear, but mostly because I like the look 🤟

wraps holding up just fine, no blemishes or fraying. In the video I was recapping after circa 5k miles and the pipes were slightly corroded as expected but no cracks or issues
Great job..simlfied..
How many meters are u use to rewrap? Nice job
Thanks, it was 2" wide 35ft long to do both pipes. Good luck!
35 feet each pipe or 35 total?
Diesel D 35ft total
Bummer. I just sprayed mine with vht. Installing them tomorrow.
Maybe I’ll wrap them too if I see the paint wearing off.
Be interested to know how you get on with it, and whether it stays good. Good luck!
Who is the music by? Nice wrap video!
thanks! all music credits are in the description 👍🏻
What clamps??
You wrapped the pipes in the wrong direction. you're supposed to start at the outlet side and move to the inlet side. So the wind doesn't blow the wrap loose because of the direction of the overlap being forward, instead of backwards.
But this music! Stop it Stop it immediately!!!
What air filter is that?
That is a Performance Machines contrast cut AF
Hey man thanks for the video, killer look ! Did you notice any improvement on how much heat is radiating from the exhaust ? Im thinking about wrapping mine but not sure if it will damage the chrome or eventually crack the pipe

Where can I get those zip ties?
I got mine from deamon tweaks
ah i take back want i said you did use blue locktite. i stand corrected. ( i should have watched the whole video before engaging my gob ha ha),
Wear glovers mistake for me is the fiberglass
probably should have worn gloves, but this wrap isn't fibreglass
@@ridingdigital luckyyy
Supposed to soak it so it shrinks when drying.
absolutely right, on a fibreglass wrap. The Design Engineering wrap I've used here isnt fibreglass though and specifically says to wrap dry
How did you do that without gloves?!! Sure the Fibre glass wrap caused irritations. You didn’t wet the wrap either…
It's ok, this wrap isnt made of fibreglass and specifically says not to wet when wrapping
That doesn't irritate your hands?
na, it's not fibreglass its soft
There is a company on-line that explains the technical reasons you should NOT be wrapping the exhausts.....I personally woudn't .....up to ypu!
your right, there are reasons not to wrap, but tbh there are probably lots of reasons to not do many things ive done on the bike. I liked the look and after 5 years everything is fine
I could barely hear you over the music
Please NO MORE MUSIC for crying out loud why does every UA-camr put annoying music in an instructional video? I would rather have silence. Is it just me or not?
You should be wrapping back to front.
Or bottom to top 😆
You wrapped the incorrect way... You have the open part, facing the wind. Start from the end, and do it the correct way next time. 👍
Good music but keep it to the back ground so we can hear you and not so loud please
Thanks for the feedback Alan, noted! Ride safe 👍🏻
if you want i could free for turbo wrap ,because i am factory in china ,i will go to sema show 2022
hiwowsport sema show 2023 booth number is 20032
I thought you were supposed to soak it in water and wear gloves cause it’s fibreglass?
yep, your right if its fibreglass but this wrap isnt fibreglass so instructions say not to
Wrong way round, should start from the back and overlap 1/4”
You’re supposed to start at the back
Yes you're right, I applied the wrap header to tip rather than the other way round. While this is considered the wrong way around, it helped me adjust and get the positioning I wanted at the tips to align them. I've had it for years like this, no issues.

you fucked up shoulda used water. started from the end and worked towards the motor and after it dryes spray it with a high heat clear sealent spray specifically for exhaust wraps and it will last much longer
it's not fibreglass wrap, no water needed
Exhaust Wrap - Always a bad idea...!
Manoo42 why
Unless you are running a turbo you want to get as much energy out of the exhaust gas as quickly as possible to reduce the necessity for restrictive silencers which cause back pressure, sapping power...
Manoo42 but sportsters run better with back pressure? That's what mechanic just told me yesterday since I'm buying one we were talking exhaust mods
You're landlord (or parents) must hate you for keeping your bike on their wood floor.

yea man I know, tried to sharpen the editing skills in the last 2 1/2 years since this one! Theres a lot to learn
Wear gloves people... You'll thank me later for not having fibers stuck in your Hands for the rest of the week.
Agree, gloves would be advisable. This wrap wasnt fibreglass so the fibres were soft but for a fibreglass wrap it would be a must
