Dusty Springfield - Live at the NME Poll Winners Concert (1966)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 26 лют 2018
- Another of Dusty's performances from the New Musical Express in 1966.
1. In the Middle of Nowhere 00:13
2. You Don't Have To Say You Love Me 02:50
3. Shake 05:51
I musta been the only Black 12 yr old in my school - in 1966 - who loved this womans' voice....had nearly every 45 she released....and would come in from playing, if she was on TV ! These clips bring back real nice memories.......
Was racism as bad as we are taught it was back in the 1960s? Im not from the 1960s so I am curious.
You have good taste. Dusty was a fabulous singer.
@@QueenFan12 It was worse in the 1930s when my parents were growing up. By the time I was a kid in the 60s, it was certainly still around, but also very much on the defensive and in retreat, besides being now a target of the law. In the 30s, it was taken for granted. By the 70s, you had to work at racism, because the way people once mindlessly accepted it was no longer operative.
@@QueenFan12and Dusty struck her own blow against racism as you may know. I mean, apart from her love for and support of black musicians. When she toured in South Africa, she refused to play before segregated audiences, and in fact had insisted on this in her contract. When the promoters reneged on the contract, and expected her to still sing, she continued to refuse, and ended up in a scary situation which ended in her deportation in the middle of false accusations from the South African authorities. Some people in show business supported her, others, notably the comedy actor Derek Nimmo, did not. It apparently led to antipathy between the two for the rest of Dusty's life. No prizes for guessing that I take Dusty's part wholeheartedly, the world needs her far more than a twittery fool with an upper class accent.
She’s an absolute Legend
One of the best live performers ever. That lady could sing the phone book and make it sound good.
Dusty had that talent, and she shared it with ALL the audience, all the people, no matter what color or origin ... my deepest respect and love!!!
THE ORIGINAL BLUE-EYED SOUL SISTER. YOU CAN TELL DUSTY WAS HEAVILY HEAVILY INFLUENCED BY R&B AND SOUL SINGERS OF THE DAY.
Introduced by Pete Murray, and Dusty's backing singers are Madeline Bell, Kiki Dee and Lesley Duncan, backing singers rarely get credit. Great stuff.
❤❤❤Dusty❤❤❤ The best singer Britain ever produced. A stunning performance. So many loved and still love her.
Change Britain for the world !!!
The great Dusty singing live as she nearly always did, the backing singer on the left is the great Madeline Bell who sang with a lot of famous singers and in the 70s group Blue Mink who had a few hits met her on a P&O cruise about 6 years ago lovely lady she said Dusty was the best singer she sang with.
Also Kiki Dee and Lesley Duncan.
Dusty is in a class of her own. Untouchable 🤩
No one can sing the look of love better than her
yes , indeed . what a voice ❤❤❤
She physically became the songs..the best ever!
Such a glamorous, talented entertainer who knew how to connect to her audience.
Thanks for uploading. Dusty rules and with Pete Woolf (my dad) on drums.
That's so cool 👍👍👍
Fantastic........
Yeah!
WOW!!!! How COOL is that!He was great too!
Fantastic drumming! Do you know who all three backup singers are?
She's one of the most underrated female singers ever.
she truly was incredible.
I don't think underrate but a bit forgotten
At least in my country...many adults don't remember her and many young people know neither her name(
At least in italy)...that 's mass media 's fault
She's in the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame.
She was amazing she had soul and at the same time she could be cool and classy when she sang songs like Windmills of your Mind and of course the Look of love and I just love watching her perform I love her energy and those cute dance moves I AM A DUSTY SPRINGFIELD FANATIC!!! Check out DUSTY doing Marvin Gayes Can I get a Witness on you tube it's outrageous it's like she caught the Holy Ghost once again she tore the stage up and sent me over the edge SING IT GIRL YEAH SING IT!!!!!!
@@johnfulton4061I am in total agreement. She was fantastic and beyond incredible. So versatile, could sing anything and do it better than anyone. I'm a total Dusty fan, she's the greatest of all time. Plus she was so humble, kind, witty, sweet, and her love of cats is so endearing.
She had one of the most distinctive female voice. I have her near the top among female singers.
From her first syllable it's obvious we're in safe and confident musical hands. Absolute quality!! What a musician.
to the uploader: eternal thanks and praises. by far the best quality version of this show you can find on YT. it's when you see stuff like this that you really start to wonder why she was crippled with such shyness and insecurity... she had stardom written all over her. her voice and style cannot be beaten by any female singer living or dead. we should have taken more care of her. there will NEVER be another!
@pipeandslippersman - Comedian / Actress Jean Arthur was similarly stricken (if not worse actually) despite having immense talent.
@Pipeandslippersman Dusty was fantastic but Kathy Kirbys 64 NME performance was equal if not better
My pleasure!
What I would pay to have been at this gig
I was there🤗🤗
@@mollymalone6075 what was the sound like from your position
I've watched this so many times. Top volume (😊) It's so well filmed, it's just like sitting on the stage. Thank the lords it was filmed for us to love decades later. Just a blast. Thank you 💘💘💘💘👏👏
I agree..... 1000%
The golden era of British television
Good God !!! ...... Dusty tears through "SHAKE" like a chainsaw on a mission ! She does Sam Cooke serious proud ! This is one of the finest concert clips of young Dusty , she looks fantastic and is in fierce form ! Gone too soon ! 👍👍👍👍👍⭐❤️
I love that cue she gives to Madeline and the gals. Gives me chills. What a performer.
Those gals also included Kiki Dee and Lesley Duncan.
@@wayneblanchard97 Thanks. I wondered who the three backing vocalists were. They were excellent along with the hired hand drummer.
@@YTSkeptic The drummer for the Echoes, Dusty's touring band, was Johnny Dryden at this point in time. The band had numerous lineup changes, with even Ringo filling in one night during his Rory Storm days. This history reveals some interesting insight. Also worth noting that Doris Troy also did occasional vocals for Dusty. Troy penned and had the original hit with 'Stay', and early chart topper for the Hollies and many years later also for Jackson Browne. She was also signed to the Beatles Apple label, and her album was produced by George Harrison, who invited a young Peter Frampton to play lead guitar on it...with Clapton, Billy Preston, Leon Russell, Ringo, and members of Delaney & Bonnie's band. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Echoes_(English_group)
And here is Ms. Troy. ua-cam.com/video/1pLXlM5X_Bs/v-deo.html
@@wayneblanchard97 Thanks! I recognised Madeline and Lesley Duncan but not Kiki Dee. It might easily have been Barbara Moore and Maggie Stredder.
Wow and she could even sing and dance in high heels to that beautiful voice of hers
What an amazing performance. Dusty was the consummate professional and entertainer. Flawless and wow is she gorgeous!!!!!!
she is wonderful !!!
Wonderful singer and stunning looking womAn
What more could you want!
Blue eyed sole.
Another performance where Dusty just can't be beat.....period..... enough said!!!!
With Madeline Bell and Kiki Dee on backing
And Lesley Duncan in the middle. What a congregation of talent! Great post.
Thank you for remembering Leslie Duncan !
Lesley
Is that really Kiki Dee? I recognised Lesley and Madeline but was trying to work out who the third singer was.
@@Bananadiva1 it is, she was regular backing for Dusty, the chin is definitely kiki
Sung from the heart not shouted..some of todays singers should take note this is how its done
Absolutely at her peak! Boy could she belt it out! Amazing how tiny she was---5foot 3inches 112 lbs. of sheer power! What a gal!
one of the background singers is Madeline Bell
Exceptional talent and person.
amazing singer...you dont have to say you love me...i think is thw best version...great great dusty ...thanks
... and THAT is what microphone technique is all about. Shake ! My favourite Sam Cooke song ....dynamite version by Dusty. Doug Reece, seen playing bass ? on stage with Dusty recalls his memories of working with her during this Australian television interview a few years back.....ua-cam.com/video/oG0W8rjNdhQ/v-deo.html. Doug became a well known identity in the music industry over here. Had the pleasure of working with him at Channel 9 in Melbourne. A really delightful guy. We knew little about all that he had done on the London pop scene as he was always a low key character who never big noted himself. But fascinating now to see him on these old British TV shows.
This is so well done, I almost feel I am there. The electricity, the band, the background singers, the audience and Dusty--what a production. High energy-- and never to be seen again. Thank you.
My god. What a voice
The sheer power in her vocals on "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me".
STUNNING
Just a capital WOW AZ this lady could sing and its s shame due ever went away
THANK YOU! DUSTY IS FOR EVER YOUNG!
fantastically clear clip of my favourite singer of all time! thanks for posting
Just blow your mind that’s why dusty is fantastic
wow! I love her! Such a beauty and great performer!
A truly quality performance and video..... priceless!!!
Dusty seemed to always have so much energy, that look she gives the girls on “You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me” reminding them to get it right. She was brilliant with her perfect timing.
Great Video!
That's what you called talent, one of my mother favourite singers.
The best version of You Dont Have To Say You Love Me Ive heard
The brilliant Mary O'Brien (stage name Dusty Springfield). Apparently the rest of the concert wasn't broadcast because of some industrial dispute. What a great shame, although if Dusty's segment is available possibly the rest of the show is stored away somewhere.
Always love you Dusty , I was in High School when you came out and sang our hearts out.
The one and only.......
All we have back then was the kitchen-counter radio....full blast for Dusty
Dusty your beautiful
Sublime Dusty
Dusty at her very, very bes!!!
Oh man beautiful quality. Wish we could get to see the full NME show in this quality. I can also see Ringo's and Keith's drum kits in the background.
Amazing!
How wonderful to see this! I was lucky enough to be at this gig; what memories. Dusty had the most fabulous voice.
Wow, you are lucky! Can you spot yourself in the audience?
Oh my god, I wish I'd been there too!!!
Thank you. The live version of "You Don't Have To Say" is better than the recording which has too much reverb. She didn't need it!
A voice as clear as a bell. Absolutely beautiful. She was so petite! What an entertainer!
Nine minutes of fantastic.
This really has the best balanced soundI have heard fron these recordings.Thank you . Brilliant
All Style, Class, and Sophistication is The Late And Great Ms Dusty Springfield. What A Great Entertainer. I Am Pleased And Privileged To Have Grown Up With Her Music And Those Of Her Contemporaries. The Music Industry Has Truly Lost A Beautiful And Beloved Soul. Dusty May Be Resting In Eternal Sleep, But Her Great Legendary Legacy Will Live On And We The Living MUST Make Sure Of That
R.I.P Dusty, Wishing You Were Here

I agree that we the living must make sure of that - I go to Dusty Day every year and Dusty is my favourite singer; if anyone asks I like to tell people as much as possible about her to spread the word. Someone commented on my Dusty Springfield handbag on the tube recently and it opened up a lovely conversation :)
Misty, after pandemic cancellations, do you think dusty day will ever return?
Great performance, and an integrated band as well . . . a rarity then.
could that chick rock simply the best
Fascinating to watch her interaction with the band-leader/guitarist!
Дасти...❤🧡💛💚💙💜💯💯💯💥💥💥
Just LOVE Dusty...Always have...Always Will!
Delightful. Electric. Exalted. Sublime. Emphatic. Bigay na Bigay! (that's Giving your all in the Filipino language).
omg, this was a live performance!
The Blue-Eyed Queen of Soul...
Again, kudos to backup singers, Kiki Dee and Madeline Bell. I return to this performance often. Totally electric.
I agree Frances... 1000%......
Also Lesley Duncan.
Ya pas à dire mais c'est une grande Dame....!!!...
Pleased to say that I am in the audience somewhere...fantastic time!
Lucky!
I know you'll never forget it... ever!!!
Elle était vraiment formidable
The 1965 and 1966 NME Poll Concerts with Dusty's section are on UA-cam here but the 1967 that I went to, sadly not. If anyone has it to up load, please let me know.
Dusty is sensational!!!
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Thanks so much for this. I had seen this before, but not as fantastic... with the song Shake. The sound quality is so good as well!! THANK YOU SO MUCH XX
A mí escuchar Dusty, podía cantar todos casi todos los géneros. 👁️👁️👍
Dear God! 👏👏👏👏
Wow, how good is that.
❤️❤️❤️
That glance towards Madeline, Kiki and Leslie reminds me of the Motown comes to England show where she nods her head briefly towards the light-operator to shine it on Martha Reeves. Dusty was in total control. Madeline's got that funny look as she's consoling (looks like) Leslie, like "we f'd up, OK, just sing!!!
Not clear how they messed up as they weren't actually singing at the point where Dusty glances towards them.
@@Wotsitorlabart They missed the lead-in, hence, Madeline Bell's funny glance back. Absolutely live for these things!
@@jesincere8589
To my ears (and eyes) they all come in exactly where they should. But Madeline certainly does draw Lesley closer to the mic and looks at her suggesting something happened. Perhaps Lesley did come in slightly early and Dusty heard it but the recording doesn't pick it up. All very much live and fascinating.
@@Wotsitorlabart Any session with Dusty demanded perfection, she (as you indicate) was fascinating. All 3 background singers were excellent and stars within their own right.
This is "Soul Revue" territory. Brass, Coloured Girls (both colours) BVs, a great Rhythm Section (yeah, that guy on some hand drums, too big to be called Bongos, maybe Congas?) An all-round great production of a lady I used to think was a Folk and Pop performer who later went a bit Country in Memphis.
Dusty loved Motown, she even brought it to the UK for a tv special and tour. Coloured bv girls are singers in their own right, Lesley Duncan, Kiki Dee and Madeline Bell ;)
@@stephenhowell5611 Not forgetting P P Arnold!
@@flamencoprof PP Arnold is great but not in the video.
@@stephenhowell5611 Agreed, didn't say so, just wanted her to be remembered as part of the scene then.
Deze single had ik eens. En was ik echt een fan.
ОНА ВЕЛИКОЛЕПНА...
Awesome...really.
им казалось, что впереди бесконечность. и теперь мы смотрим на них из будущего. жесть.
❤
DJ Pete Murray on the introduction
totally fcking electric performance. What a jewel.
Patti LaBelle and Martha Reeves turn me on to Dusty from their stories about her
Hot.
Who is dusty’s guitarist in this video? I don’t think Vic Briggs was in the Echoes anymore at this point
Im wondering that too. He’s really good.
@Selvikus That was Gary Boyle who replace Vic Briggs in late 1965 when he left to join The Steampacket with Long John Baldry, Rod Stewart, Julie Driscoll and the Brian Auger Trinity.
What sexy woman ! But very tragic
Fabulous.Not like today’s fake Shit
Kiki Dee getting down on Shake.
Does this whole concert exist in film of this quality? I'm working on a project and need to find it if so. Thanks for the clean peek.
Part 1 was filmed but is not available even the BFI don't have a copy. The Walker Brothers and the Who were on it Roy Orbison and many others
As far as I'm aware this is the only footage available - a lot of Dusty's performances are lost I'm afraid. :(
Missed
She looks Great in that dress and top...I wish she ditched the wigs and grown her hair long.
I think the hair opitomizes the time.
@@mikehudson8884
No, by then it was old fashioned early 60's look - take a look at other girl singers (check out Madeline, Lesley and Kiki on backing vocals) and actresses of the time.
Not a backing track in sight and no pitch correction electronics, actual musicians and singers, if you use pitch correction watch and learn. If you need pitch correction you are in the wrong business
Those numbers from black artists, tell the truth I'm not a fan of Motown etc. But she was one white singer who was respected by black singers, I mean even Dionne Warwick would give her the time of day sometimes. That's good going.
Whos the girl singer in the middle of Madeline Bell and Kiki Dee?
Lesley Duncan.
California?
