Thanks! It is a fairly long and detail oriented video, so if someone is looking for a quick fix I could see how they would get antsy. There are a lot of reasons a garage door opener won't stay up or down though so I tried to cover them all to assist in troubleshooting.
@@charlieaf92 I see that point of view bu this video opened my eyes and I discovered it really is not that complicated to discover most problems w openers...it is expensive and scary to call a repair person everybody wants to charge huge amount of money for litle work and some times make problem worse

This is exactly what I've been looking for. I've watched 30+ garage door videos and none of them have been this informative. I now know exactly what to do. Thank you so much!
Great video. Like others, I opened dozens of videos showing you how to clean and allign the lens on the safety beam, which I knew wasn't the problem. I had a bad switch on the stop limit, which was a quick fix once I knew what to look for. Well done!

Thank you for making this video - don't worry about comments from people who don't have any patience and will never fix anything on their own. I have a Chamberlain opener that my son uses primarily. It started not wanting to stay shut in the winter in MN no less. He told me that when he opened it, it went up a little and then stopped. Then he closed it and it opened back up on its own. Then he left and shut the door (he thought) and it opened itself again after he took off. In the meanwhile my garage heater was going full blast for two hours til he came back home from skating and told me that it wasn't staying shut... Anyway, I was able to fix mine by adjusting back the down-travel by about 3/4 of a turn. I diagnosed mine by disconnecting the trolley and running the unit. It did not return after moving down the track so I figured an adjustment would probably do it for now. I have a feeling the door was maybe frozen to the floor and it jumped a tooth either in the housing or on the screw drive when it had a hard time opening. Either that or I may need to get out the soldering iron and do some surgery like you did. Thank you for providing the in-depth info on this and showing the internals of your opener. I thought the length of your video was perfect and I enjoyed the humor as well. :)
Awesome, thanks so much for the feedback and kind words! I'm glad you got yours fixed. I'd never considered jumping a tooth but it certainly makes sense that would lead to issues like you described. Congrats on getting it sorted out!

Ok. I opened up the craftsman opener and found the gray wire to the limiter switch was completely broken in two pieces. I added another three inches of wire between the two ends via western union splices, soldered, shrink tubed both splices, reconnected, plugged it in and it’s working great now. Thanks for the video. It let me know what the probable cause was and you were spot on 🙂👍🏻
Thanks as I got my Chamberlain opener repaired & running! What I thought were two short antenna wires were a stretched broken wire. Once repaired I had to reset all the up/down adjustments but it all works!

Thanks for the video, I didn't even think to check any of the wiring. When I wiggled the main harness, one of the wires was indeed broken. I did a quick twist of the ends followed by some shrink tubing. Sprayed deoxit on the contacts, straightened them out and now the adjusting screws work like they are supposed to. Thanks for the video. I had a similar problem with my door opener. I went through the usual troubleshooting guide and made adjustments, but the door wouldn't stay down. I also noticed the sliding piece on the rail hit both the top and bottom stops. I took off the cover and right away noticed a broken wire. An easy fix! I tried it and it worked, then some minor adjustments and all was working as it should. Thanks for the video. You saved me spending $200 on a new garage door opener. Thanks again.
Thanks! There was a lot of info in the video. Helped me identify the problem: loose wiring connecting the door sensors to the main motor thing. If you see garage door sensor lights flicker during the door closing, it might be a loose connection, assuming no other obstructions. At least take a look at the thing before giving in and calling a pro. Good luck.
Thank you so much ! We have had this problem for years. I opened it up and it was the wire snapped off I ended up replacing the wire and that fixed the issue thank you !
Thank you brother, I ran into the same situation and this solved my problem, although my issue was related more with the main power/higher voltage issue. Thank you for your leg work!! I know it took some time for you. I hope this video works both in your favor and others like us trying to solve our garage door gremlins. Awesome!!! Thank you!
I had the same problem, but different root cause. Your video gave such a good tutorial on the key components that you led me to the solution I needed which was just some fine tuning on the travel and force settings. The opener worked without the need of any adjustments for over 10 years so I was surprised it was this simple.
I'm having the similar issue, with the same craftsman model, but mine turned out to be an upper bearing issue, not allowing the spinal to spin, in order to allow the travel limit mechanism to operate. At first I thought it was a spriped gear, but looking closer, the bearing on top, is totally messed up.
Hey there. You're welcome. Typically ground wires are green but not always. If its just a wire hanging down from the machine it is possible its the antenna for the wireless remotes. Where it it actually coming from and what does the end look like that's hanging down?
So for years when it gets cold my door goes door 7/8 of the way and then back up…. I’ve cleaned the lenses, greased the rollers and tighten the nuts on all the brackets… it’s every year it gets cold… goes up fine and you can force down by holding the button until it down.. thoughts??
It has been years since mine acted up and the specifics are a little fuzzy, but I kind of think that my problem started during cold weather and slowly got worse. It's worth checking your wiring for the limit switch to make sure there isn't a break. If not, I would try adjusting the force sensor sensitivity and see if that resolves it.
Great video Charlie... I have similar problem. My garage open several minutes or maybe an hour after I close it. Sometimes it opens all the way up, sometimes just a foot or 2. Unexplained pattern yet. But I might tired some of your tips to check the wiring.
Thanks Ivica. That sounds like a very strange problem, and worrisome problem. Does it every try to close by itself after sitting for a while? If the errant behavior happens in both the open and closed position, it could mean additional possibilities causing the problem.
Thank you reply... I dont think that is closes on its own... Just open after it close... After 2 hours sometimes, very strange. I recently program 3 of my in car garage door openers (the one factory on visors) and this problem starts, but have no idea how this will effect opening at the middle of the night.
So, an update... nothing was wrong with garage. It looks like that somehow I got the same frequency as my neighbor. So, new reset of the code and we are good to go.
There is a device inside of the case that has the plastic screws going into it. It allows you to adjust the travel. There should be 3 wires connected to it. For me, it was the gray wire that was bad - it acts as a ground for the other two when contact is made at the top and bottom of the travel.
Help. My garage door pushes down against pavement when i press open, then pull back up two foot and stops there.. leaving a gap😢. If i press open again it will do the same thing pushes down against pavement then pull back up two foot n stops😢 The metal arm bended now😢
I just added 1/16th turn to the garage door DOWN on the side... that worked. But I'm seeing that it wouldn't stay down because the center main gear is starting to cant because of bearing wear at the top. That "cant" changed the stop and hold for the door down mode. Unit is wearing out. ^..^~~
@@charlieaf92 Yes. When the unit itself experiences wear with age, these settings need be adjusted. My door unit has two of them, one for telling the door to reach maximum down and up. ^..^~~
I’m having the same problem with my 1/2 Horse Craftsman. The door goes down so far that it bends the chain’s Travel bar Up and the goes back up and stays there. There’s a lot of torque moving this chain. Not sure how much damage will be cause if I were to keep closing it. Anyway, I’ll use your video’s information and see if it’s the same problem, as when you described Your problem it was Exactly like mine, on yet again, a 10 year old Craftsman. I shall return.
Hey James! I'd start off by adjusting the up and down travel limit screws, and possible the force adjustment screws. Although, if it was working properly before and NOW its causing problems with both up and down I suspect it is related to the ground wire on the switch that I described in the video. That wire would affect both directions. Good luck and feel free to post if you have any questions along the way.
No, I don't think so but it's been a while so I can't remember very well. I think my problem was only with closing - the limit switch wasn't activating so it was trying to push into the ground which activated the safety reverse feature (when that happened the lights flashed).
I have a Craftsman and my garage door opens and closes on its own every two minutes or so also have had trouble opening with remote, (have to be in the driveway , where i used to be able to open it 150ft. away, that is with all the remotes and have to sometimes click a few times before it would open) might it be the electronic card itself? is it better to get a new opener since Sears is going out of business? Thanks Charlie
Hey Javier - that's a strange problem. If you take the batteries out of your remote, does the garage door still open on its own after sitting for two minutes? I'm wondering if the problem could just be your remote. By removing the batteries you can eliminate that as a possibility. I wouldn't worry too much about Sears' longevity as a company - parts should be available for years to come because they're made by others anyway.
I tried it and it still going on. Iv'e had problems with all 3 of my remotes struggling to open the door (they all started acting up at the same time a few months back and it kept getting worse), so I'm thinking that it may be short in the electronic board. I think I'm just going to replace the opener and call it a day. Great tutorial by the way, and thanks for your response and help.
Ah, yeah I hate to say it but that's probably your best bet. It sounds like it could be your logic board, but those are roughly $70-80. Its a gamble because that may not fix it - so a new unit is probably the safest bet. Sorry I couldn't be of more help!
Any knows why my garage door its moving up or down only if i keep pressing the buttons box ? Normally if i was pressing the button goes all the way up and vise versa. Any idea why now i need to keep pressing ???
Hey Suzanne. Are they lit solid, or blinking? Lit solid means everything is good - if they are blinking or not lit, that is a problem. I just checked and mine are two different colors + from what I read online that is normal.
Hey Charlief92 , can you tell me the garage door open but it won't come down. Just hear the sound click .and it won't moved. Can you tell me what the problem. Thank..! I have it 2 years from Sear ( craftsman )
@@hehexe7622 Sorry, I'm not really sure what the problem would be. I would double check that the infrared 'eyes' are properly aligned. Aside from that, I don't have any guesses.
Mine has no screws to adjust. Just an up triangular button, a down triangular button and an rectangular adjustment button in the middle. I've done the troubleshooting and reprogrammed it to no avail. It still bounces back up when I try to close it. It takes me anywhere from 10-25 attempts with the remote to get it to finally shut.
@@antiquesrestoration3874 Ah! It looks like they upgraded the controls a bit. Here is a link to the manual for that opener. Pages 28 and 29 outline how to use the buttons to make the adjustments I talked about - www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/user-manuals/13954985-craftsman-parts-manual
@@charlieaf92Yeah..."upgraded." I wish they hadn't "upgraded." I have the manual and unfortunately one can only push the buttons to reprogram the opening and closing, which I've done a number of times to no avail. There's no ability to finesses and make the adjustments with the buttons like there is with the screws. (Sigh)
@@jasper9804 Interesting. I read through the instructions and it seems like you use the arrows to move the door to the top and bottom respectively and then save those position settings. If you've done that, and it isn't saving (ie: the door keeps trying to go down and eventually reverses itself) it means either the setting wasn't saved properly (control board issues I guess) or the travel/position sensor and/or its wiring is faulty. Have you opened up the case to see what it looks like? Its possible there is something similar to mine with a lead screw physically moving something along a sensor or array of sensors and the wiring went bad just like in my case.
Cliff notes: It was a bad ground wire on the travel limit switch. There are a variety of reasons why you may be experiencing this though, so I did my best to explain the various points of failure.
Thank you! really would like to talk with you about my opener. It is just like yours but I was unable to fix mine. I realize you probably get requests such as mine all the time but if you had the time and inclination I really would appreciate it if you could send me an email with instructions on how to communicate. Thank you, Tom
@@charlieaf92 --Thanks for replying. Without any load on it, it will go up 1-2 ft. then down and stop, maybe not all the way down. It repeats this over and over, again with the door not engaged, so no load on the chain. It's kind of jerky in the movement and will not travel more than a couple of feet without reversing the other direction.
@@pikayell That is very strange and sounds like something is seriously wrong. Have you opened it up and inspected for anything that looks broken or out of place? My only guess without being able to get my hands on it would be that the control board is malfunctioning.
@@charlieaf92 --That's the conclusion I came too as well after doing all those other things. It's a gamble it seems to buy a new board which may not fix the problem as opposed to buying a new unit. Thoughts?
@@pikayell I thought the same thing. Spend $80-90 on a board vs. $150 on a new unit. Check and see if any of the places that sell the board offer a 365 return policy (even on opened parts). Hey Erik - good point. The problem I ended up having was the central wire for the up/down limit switch had an internal break. I detailed how to verify that with a volt meter later in the video. Let me know if you have any questions about your problem and I may be able to help.

Thomas Gebhardt have you tried adjusting the limit screws? Try turning the down limit screw until the door stops about 1” above the ground. If it continues to re-open after that, then it’s probably the same wire that went bad on mine. I believe you can order a replacement.
@@charlieaf92 not sure where the limit screws are at but I can sure look. Im not sure the age of the opener, but Im sure its every bit of 15 to 20 plus years. Thanks for your help. Ill let you know the issue when fixed. (if i remember)

Yeah you're right, but there are plenty of videos on youtube like that, that just assume it is one particular problem leading to the symptom. They aren't much help if yours is failing for another reason. The idea here was to explain the various inputs to better troubleshoot the symptom vs. zeroing in on a particular cause.

Really!? I hadn't even thought of that but it makes perfect sense. Glad you figured it out - and thanks for sharing!
You are a master man
I have exact same issue but no luck so far, guys are talking about wire broken but which ones?
^..^~~
Are you talking about the worm gear that drives the little mechanism with the wires on it?
Good luck and feel free to post if you have any questions along the way.
charlieaf92 - I never got around to any of that. The problem was obvious the moment I removed the casing.
@@3of930My garage same issue. What went wrong on yours😢
Stanley 2200 model will not run in down mode! Runs continuos in up mode ! Any suggestions might help!
I'd start with the limit sensor - it sounds like the contacts aren't being made to tell the machine that the door has reached the up position.
When your door opened was your light flashing telling you there was a problem ?
No, I don't think so but it's been a while so I can't remember very well. I think my problem was only with closing - the limit switch wasn't activating so it was trying to push into the ground which activated the safety reverse feature (when that happened the lights flashed).
Great job!
Thank you! Cheers!
Thank you
You're welcome!
Thank you!!! Fixed my craftsman 1/2 after it did the same. Great job & thanks for posting it!!!
Awesome - really stoked to hear that it helped you fix your opener! Nice job!
Sorry I couldn't be of more help!
video way too long so i played while i was trying to fix mine. somehow i fixed it. xd
Any knows why my garage door its moving up or down only if i keep pressing the buttons box ? Normally if i was pressing the button goes all the way up and vise versa. Any idea why now i need to keep pressing ???
Sorry I don't know for sure. I would double check and make sure that the break beam eyes aren't obstructed and they're properly aligned.
My sensors on the bottom of either side of the garage door tracked one is a greenlight one is a yellow light. What does that mean?
Hey Suzanne. Are they lit solid, or blinking? Lit solid means everything is good - if they are blinking or not lit, that is a problem. I just checked and mine are two different colors + from what I read online that is normal.
Hey Charlief92 , can you tell me the garage door open but it won't come down. Just hear the sound click .and it won't moved. Can you tell me what the problem. Thank..! I have it 2 years from Sear ( craftsman )
Do the lights flash on and off when you try to close it?
@@charlieaf92
The lights not flashing. Just hear click. Every time I clicked the remote.
@@charlieaf92
Look like the motor not working.
@@hehexe7622 Sorry, I'm not really sure what the problem would be. I would double check that the infrared 'eyes' are properly aligned. Aside from that, I don't have any guesses.
@@charlieaf92
Thank..
What brand and model is it?
@@charlieaf92 It is a Craftsman model 139.54985. Thank you.
Its possible there is something similar to mine with a lead screw physically moving something along a sensor or array of sensors and the wiring went bad just like in my case.
thanks for the video. it would be nice if you can jump into the problem and the fix.
Hey there. Feel free to send me an email. I can't promise I'll be helpful though. My email is my username @ gmail
My Chamberlain 700WHC opener goes down then up then stops, then up and down, over and over. None of the things mentioned have helped. Any ideas?
It goes all the way down, then reverses but stops before it gets back up? Then, it goes up to the top and reverses and goes all the way down?
Some do (such as Repair Clinic). That way you may be out the return shipping if it doesn't work, but that is all. Please let me know what you discover!
Good information. But please get to the point.
Hey Erik - good point. The problem I ended up having was the central wire for the up/down limit switch had an internal break. I detailed how to verify that with a volt meter later in the video. Let me know if you have any questions about your problem and I may be able to help.
OMG you are killing me I agree with Omar get to the point dude!!!
Great info.
This is an excellent video
Great job
Thanks - I hope it helped!
Thank you but learn to edit! You could have boiled this down to 4 minutes. Thank you anyhow.
My man.
Sorry, I was napping thru class...
showing pics of the actual device would be hwlpful
You wanna come fix mine? I have no idea about electricity, grounds, ohms and usually dont mess with electricity anyway.
Thomas Gebhardt - what’s it doing?
@@charlieaf92 automatically goes back up after closing. Checked track, check eyes, well oiled/greased. I just dont do elec as Ive been bit toooooo many times. When I watch other "fix it" vids here on YT, they seem ti be all over with fixes, but to no avail. If I trusted my elec work, Id go your route. Thanks for responding btw.
Check your manual, or google it. They can be adjusted with a flat blade screw driver and may fix your problem without the need to open it up and do any further troubleshooting.
Have you ever INSTALLED a Ryobi? Complete POS. Glad it's history!
I haven't, but thanks for letting me know. Just out of curiosity, what didn't you like about it?
@@charlieaf92
Didn't like the rail design. Wear gloves, I skinned 3 fingers snapping it together.
The wall button is pretty janky. Very basic design. I mean, it's a wall button, but you would think that Ryobi would have stolen a design that's a little better.
LED light isn't directional at all. Points straight down.
Indoor keypad doesn't make sence. I mean if your in the garage press the wall button. Just a selling point to folks that have no idea.
Sensor brackets are tacky looking.
Programming the unit was pretty easy. But not a fan of the programming sequence.
Really it's a Genie when boiled down. I have a video where I use Ryobi parts on a Genie. Worked!
I guess it's hard to compete with Chamberlain LiftMaster on design.
Dude too much of information, it sounded like a pure theory class LOL. but really helped me to understand the functionality of the motor and other set up
Well I'm happy to hear it helped!

Bro you could've just get to the point in 2 minutes
Yeah you're right, but there are plenty of videos on youtube like that, that just assume it is one particular problem leading to the symptom. They aren't much help if yours is failing for another reason. The idea here was to explain the various inputs to better troubleshoot the symptom vs. zeroing in on a particular cause.
@@charlieaf92 Hey I probably wrote this cause I was in my garage in Minnesota at -10 watching your video trying to figure why my garage door wasn't closing all the way! 😅 But hey thanks cause u helped me!
@@alfasierra254 lol - well that makes sense then. Glad it helped!

You’re right. I got a bit long winded but the explanation is necessary to properly troubleshoot a variety of reasons why the door won’t stay done.
Seriously get to the point
This takes forever to get to the point
:) then you have missed the point. There is more than one reason a garage door may malfunction, I told you all of them.
Why does every video contain sooo much filler before the pertinent content?
The full first 1/3 of this video is preamble - worthless. Please get to the bottom line quickly. In English. Thanks.
too much talking
Hey Carlos - you're not alone in that assessment. With this video rather than just saying "hey if your garage door is broken, this is the problem", I tried to give an overview of how the entire system works, so that if someone is having a different problem than I did, they're able to start narrowing it down and troubleshooting it themselves.
@@charlieaf92 Fair enough,
Tell how to fix it...no one cares about your phone calls, which one you were going to buy or your conversation with Sears....JUST TELL HOW TO FIX THE DAMN THING!! YOU TALK TO MUCH.
lol ok thanks for the input Fatima. I checked your how to videos to see an example of how it should be done but couldn't find any ;)
You don't need an example to watch to be able to follow directions. Just tell how to fix it, add all the bull shit about your conversations with store clerks and your phone calls at the end of the video.

Too much talk not enough show.
