"I like to make stuff" did something similar to a projector screen. Turning the dumb switches into something that can be controlled via alexa. If I remember correctly, he used an arduino to get signal through wifi and sent it to the projector screen as an electric signal as if ghr switch as pushed.
Totally hack the extractor fan! I would love to do that but don’t have any power monitoring to indicate when the stove top is in use
@@peterbaker6827 same, about to post a video showing what I’ve done with my lighting today. But in it you can see I ended up putting a Zigbee button on the hood and leaving the switches for the light and fan on and then Shelly’s the whole thing so one button press turns both on and the stove itself which has super annoying buttons which get pressed by accident when not in use.
I did the kick area. Looks nice, and it really highlights how dirty the floor is!
I did wonder about it showing up the dirt. Luckily I have a robot vacuum that cleans that area twice a day!
@@fredherbert2739 I want to do this, and I still might go addressable because I think it would be too damn cool to use the section under my washer/dryer to indicate time remaining 🙈
Years ago I popped a relay, a dallas temp sensor and a pm2.5 sensor in on a esp in my extractor fan.
Never looked back. Until my brother in law bought a "smart" extractor fan for.... 800 euro. (and cloud connected). Mine works better since I can fine-tune it to my liking (yay esphome) AND is agnostic to which extractor fan I use. I since replaced the extractor fan and just transplanted my handiwork.
I highly recommend doing this.

I added addressable leds under my kitchen cabinets. I update the led color under the dishwasher to indicate state of the dishwasher. Green=safe to add dishes, blue=running or delayed Start, red = clean, so empty it, and do NOT add dirty dishes.
I have the reverse colours. Green means clean/finished/please empty. It's one of those weird ones though where green and red mean different things to people. Assuming you are using HA, then I'm sure you will remember the debacle where they changed the dashboard colours last year. 🤦

By adding the LED below the cabinets, you can setup a visual reminder that some device is still turned on like a cooking top or something else.

I would like to see you hack the stove fan, mainly because I want to do the same thing. Keep it up! The toe kick lights are nice for when you walk into the kitchen at night.
I completely agree! A relay switch and possibly a hidden humidity sensor should do the trick. Then you could add a PWM controller to set the fan speed based on humidity level... Ok, maybe not.
I also had a extractor dark spot and it annoyed me too!
I've got floor lights in my kitchen and I love them. Great to come on at night automatically when grabbing a water to prevent kicking something accidentally.

I automated my extractor fan. I put a 4 channel esp relay board in between the switches and motor channels/light. This was more to do with the fact that the motor was burning out the switches and was becoming unreliable and something had to be done. Well that is what I keep telling myself, but it did open up a range of automation abilities. Next upgrade is to fit a temp/humidity sensor so that it can turn on/off depending on the stage of cooking, or other appliances generating temp/humidity that needs to be removed.

Agree with the add of baseboard lighting. Would love to do a lot of the lighting...but breaks in cabinet spacing as well as appliance placement make it near impossible so hats off to your work!
I do use lighting below the cabinets on the floor and it can look super cool!

I think that turning on the extractor automatically is a great idea. A Shelly Uni should work fine.
Yes do it i did and also add presence detector on it (mWave!!) with another esp (i did it so my plan is to track position and match those to segments so light could follow you in the kitchen!)

It should be fairly easy to automate the extractor fan in the hood. However, you might not always want the fan to come on and if it's a multi-speed fan, that will be a bit more tricky. +1 for the HA voice assistant video.

About the bottom area. It looks and works great. I have that at home + part of them are addressable (below the dishwasher) to display state (working, needs unloading, ready to be loaded)

Yes. Automate the fan. You will love it. Yes add LEDs at the bottom my wife loves ours. We also have them automated to turn red and flash if there is a water leak under the sink.
I feel your pain and you are not alone. I'm obsessed right now about my wall mounted Home Assistant tablet functionally and some Esp intermittent sensor readings doing my head in!!
I’ve done exactly what you considered 🙈 my cooker hood luckily has physical push switches for the light and fan so I leave them pushed in and put a Shelly on it to toggle it all on when cooking (as detected by the PM2 sensor 😂)

I've been wanting to automate my extracted fan too. But what has been keeping me from attempting it is I want to retain the high, medium, low settings.
You can add a jumper off the fan on switch to be a trigger to WLED. I’d also use something to start the hood automatically
Love the videos, I used an old sonoff ifan02 a few years ago to drive a 3 speed fan & light in extraction hood over our stove, works like yours, when current draw on stove top exceeds threshold it turns on lights & fan. Also installed new press buttons to control as well so partner can control manually if required. Helps with SAF. Cheers

For the extractor fan look at the control board to start with. You might be able to intercept the connections between the panel and control board might be a ribbon cable. U could intercept this with a small pcb with esp make use of buttons as inputs and outputs to their controller. ESPHome 😊. Easier said than done i know.

I had a similar problem with my GE Cafe exhaust fan over the stove. At the time I didn't realize that the fan actually had an IR input, and GE was selling a (very overpriced) remote to turn it on. I managed to find the IR codes online somewhere and put them into a broadlink rm4 mini to control the fan and lights. Probably just luck that my fan had this option, but mentioning it in case you may have overlooked it as I did.

I planned to do plinth level lights on all of my kitchen cabinets, but started with the island. It looks very nice but didn't bother with the rest of the kitchen {yet}. I used wled, and have various notifications set up for doorbell and recycling day etc.
I put some facing the kitchen floor because i had some extra strips laying around. I really like it.....if i enter my kitchen after 11pm and all the lights are off on the 1st floor my automation only turns on the floor lights. No jarring overhead lights.....
You could have an air quality sensor in relative proximity to the stove and automatically toggle the extractor fan ;)
I have a smallish kitchen, and didn't really need the ligths down at floor level in the overhang, but I did it anyway, and I ended up using them a fair bit. It adds an ambience to the floor that would look weird if it was dark now, and also if I need a night light, it works pretty well as a night light as it creates a low level light, but being at floor level it doesn't shine in my eyes at all. I just used form 4000k neutral white LED's that were already in a corner type aluminium housing, kind of like a bit of "quad" timber trim you may use to cover a corner.
It wasn't needed, but it would look weird if it was missing now. I also use controllers from Quindor for these, but I use the analogue ones, as that is what is needed for these lights. I went full analgoue with all my kitchen LEDs instead of addressable, because I had a few of the 4 channel analogue QuinLED controllers available, I just used analogue RGB strips for strips under the cabinet and along the ceiling line, but that was just what I had laying around instead of building new DigQuads for addressables.

about electrical safety: do you have RCDs or RCBOs in your fusebox? if not, you should get an electrician to install them.
BTW, an RCBO is basically a circuit breaker combined with an RCD.
my old fusebox only had circuit breakers, so they had it replaced, and the new one has RCBOs instead of circuit breakers, and it even has a surge protector.
Yeah, I've got RCDs which is why I was so blasé about having the power supply exposed up there. But you can never be too safe!
Yeah, do the fan and lights
Kickspace lighting is for the obsessively clean who never have crumbs on the floor. They leave no room whatsoever to think "I'll vacuum tomorrow". Of course if you have a robot vacuum cleaning the kitchen every night (which I would spend the money on long, long before I automated a single light in the house, I have to say) that might be fine.
My robot goes twice a day in the kitchen, because I'm an absolute grub and often make a huge mess.
I would love to see you hack the extractor fan, but not with just a relay. I would like to see you wire the existing capacitive touch buttons to a controller so you can turn on and off the leds and fan. You can program multiple "touch" settings based on how many times you press the button.
While voice and automation is always good you should always try to have some way of manually controlling things
That's way out of my range of abilities! But it would be awesome!

I have plinth lighting in my bathroom. It's awesome. You should do the same in your kitchen
Remove the SK6812 over the worktop and use them for the floor. For the worktop, analog high CRI would be a better choice.
I used a dual led analog (2700k and 6500k) which allows perfect mixing, high brightness at a high CRI (which is much nicer for cooking / looking at your food).
Interesting. The SK6812 works well for subtle patterns that play whilst we're eating though!

Oh my. Same problem here. Unfortunately my dumb extractor is flush mounted so nowhere to hide a led strip to take over its built in light duties.
Ive been eyeing up the NSpanel Pro for over a year trying to decide if i want to grab some and mod them to install HA. But I worry that eventually the android version will eventually become too out of date for new releases of the HA app and I wont find a newer alternative.
It seems a lot more of these types of screen have changed to linux to stop users modding them. Much like TomTom did.. (if anyone else remembers those now) 😂

How do you monitor energy consumption of your stove?
Using a Shelly Energy Monitor CT clamp. I've got a video on my channel about how I've done my energy management.
Now the only thing to fix is setting the CCT to warm white instead of horrible cold white :P
I deliberately chose cold white for the over counter lights as it helps us see what we're doing when chopping or cooking. We set them to a warmer colour when we're done cooking or during the day
Don't use Sonoff, when now the (really affordabla) Shelly Wall Display becomes fully compatible (in beta) with Home Assistant and allows to use designated dashboards.
If you don't use addressable LEDs you will regret that in the end. And yes, you should fix the extractor fan, it's not that hard.
What do you use the addressable LEDs for on the plinth?

That is something I need to figure out. The swinging door makes it really hard to mount an LED strip in a channel there.
floor lights piss me off. it shows how dirty my kitchen floor is and makes me sad :P
I have an automation for that: once the kitchen is empty for 10 min after having been occupied for 10+ min, my robot vacuum is tasked to do a quick sweep.
I've also got a robot vacuum, so I hope that it doesn't stay dirty for long!

I think that you shouldn't add relay to extraction hood. You should hack original buttons, add esp32 and bunch of relays to have 3-speed fan controller controllable form home assistant.

i did that also add presence sensors (i use gas to cook so i also add an MQ sensor to monitor if is open)
@@egrantocr my plan was to also add humidity sensor, so that it actually turns automatically if it detects sudden spike in humidity. My brain is just filled with plenty of excuses to postpone this project.

I think most people who give a damn about the homes they live in will get wound up by imperfections to the point of distraction and a mild form of madness. Children are the remedy. When they come along those things will no longer seem so important and a sort of freedom will be achieved. Worked for me.

The overhang should also have led strips. But the addressable ones please? You are stuck with a controller now. Why not use that to highlight all the dirt on the floor?
The robot vacuum cleaner gets rid of the dirt, so hopefully it's not that noticeable.
You know if you don’t put addressable LEDs under the bottom cabinets you’ll just be replacing them in a month or two.
