      Our friend, and his new wife lived with us in Texas, and she always said "...the highways, and the byways..." And I LOVED it! It's not an expression where I'm from 🥰 We moved to another state, and aren't in touch as much as would be ideal, so this brought the biggest smile to my face 🥰🥰🥰

    Need to add this, but after my recent surgery, the assistant principal called me to ask not how I was recovering but if I could help my sub grade to help lighten her workload. I politely told him that I was on FMLA and therefore did not exist at the school, and that doing any work while on medical leave would break my union contract. That shut him up pretty fast! The audacity! 🤷🏻‍♀️

      I was subbing for a Gov/Economics teacher because he had surgery, so I helped and did a lot, including closing the grade-book and end the senior school year for him, with the help of a senior experienced teacher. That teacher and I had a great year. He got to relax and not worry, while I got to work. BTW, I had to do grading too. NP. If the teacher left me instructions to do it, I will do it. No worries.

    • @emmawest5688
      @emmawest5688 2 роки тому +8

      You’re right-teachers should not have to worry about work while they are taking time off to recuperate from surgery, care for a sick child, etc. Before my surgery, I made sure to have some lesson plans in place for my sub to get started. Like Rosie Rose said, at my school our grade level teams help each other out, and my grade level lead told me not to worry about anything and that the grade level team would make sure to help out my sub. My husband also had to take time off a while back for his own medical reason, and he didn’t worry about work at all. He’s also not a teacher, so there’s that. So why is it that we are expected to keep working even when we are unable to do so? (Rhetorical question). As my husband said, if I died during the school year, the school/admin would have to help acclimate the new teacher to the classes.

    I had a very ostentatious admin at one of the early schools I worked at. He was always flashing his doctorate around and would get legit upset if someone called him "mister" instead of "doctor" so-and-so. One day he came up behind me at a the staff copier (my back to him with no idea who was behind me) and said my name. I answered "yeah," thinking it was a coworker and then listened to him lecture me up and down about how I needed to work on my professionalism. All I can say is that there is a reason he had great posture, and all credit goes to the stick. So imagine my surprise when, not too many years later, this pillar of moral and professional fortitude was then featured in the local paper, having been arrested and charged as part of a sting operation busting men trolling for prostitutes in a nearby park. Karma is a harsh mistress.

    That sitting down comment happened to me. I had just got back from being in the hospital for six weeks with pulmonary sarcoidosis and still had ongoing shortness of breath. I sat down at my desk at the end of class, this was about 7 min before the end of the period, to rest a minute and catch my breath as the students were working on something. Principal sends me the “see me” email after coming in and seeing me sitting down. He tells me his spill, I tell him why I was sitting down for a moment, he tells me if I’m unable to work, I should continue my leave. So he would rather have a sub there who teaches nothing than to have me sit down for a minute here and there!

      As long as your provide sensitive support to unruly “troubled” kids and make sure kids in class didn’t kill each other, teachers are fine! Heck! Teachers can allow kids do activities on a tablet all day until dismissal and admin and parents will be with that.

      Open your eyes. Academic education is no longer a top priority in schools.
      The top priority is to provide a baby sitting service while parents are at work. It’s also crucial to sensitive to “personal emotional” problems that kids have and to not give them proper discipline as it damages their self esteem.
      Staff members are now baby sitters and therapists.
      Kids aren’t learning in school anymore and admin and even parents seem to be fine with that🙄🙄🙄

    I too was asked to type sub plans while I was in the hospital waiting for emergency gallbladder surgery. My spouse had to go home and bring my computer so I could do it. Due to the pain meds I was on I couldn’t type (no fine motor control due to meds) I had to dictate the plans to my spouse who typed them. Funny thing was it never occurred to me that this was wrong, simply something that needed to be done.

    Who says a good teacher doesn't sit down??? Someone just made that up out of thin air. What do they think, that sitting somehow shuts off their brains? As a matter of fact, only good teachers can sit down because it means they have the classroom management skills to be able to do so without having the kids go berserk. If your kids act up when you sit down, it means you are not a good teacher... sitting is a great barometer!

    The AC/heat in our district is controlled at the district office. Changing the temp requires an act of Congress. There is a range of temperatures that are “allowed.” In two different rooms (one hot and one cold) when the thermometer (borrowed from science equipment) exceeded that range, I gleefully ran to the office to submit a work order as the temperature required immediate response. The blower in the warm room read 94 degrees when the techs came to measure. The cold room was 61.

    We had 2 second grade teachers who at the end of the year had to move all their stuff out of their rooms because they were getting new carpet (first off the teachers should not be expected to move furniture). By August when the rest of us were starting to set up, their carpets had not been done. The few days before school started when we were having meetings, they were told the District ran out of money so no carpet and they could move all the stuff back in...but to move it out again at the end of that year. They had a weekend and 2 days to get set up before Back to School night and the first day of school and were there until wee hours of the morning each night.

    I told my students that part of our curriculum in the art room was to develop appreciation for art. I also told the students that I spent my own money to buy supplies and equipment that allowed them to have good art experiences. (What the school gave me was less than .50 cents,per student, per year! Not even enough for a pencil!) I expected their artwork to at the very least to make it to their homes to share with their parents. I did not want to find finished art in the garbage out of respect for me and the sacrifice I made in purchasing the supplies. If I found art in my garbage I would subtract the number of points it was worth in the grade book from their final grade. Last day of the semester, I reminded students of this. One student that had an B in my class distorted all her work in front of my face and stuffed into the garbage in front of me. I took it out, totaled the points and corrected her grade from a B to an F. Her mother called the principle, he called me, and asked me to restore her grade. I called her mother and asked her mom to tell me what grade do you want me to give your child. If she wanted her kid to get a fake grade that she didn’t deserve, I wasn’t going to fight about it. There would be many others down the road that would give her daughter the lesson she desperately needed to learn. This is why we have so many entitled kids that enter the work force so wholly unable or unwilling to be responsible! These parents ruin their own kids and torture the teachers thing to develop people with integrity.

    The only upshot about admin. being who they are is that it gives kids a valuable lesson as to why they should stay in school and take their education seriously--so that they know who NOT to emulate when they grow up. Because despite their framed diplomas hanging proudly on the walls located in their offices with closed doors and narrow minds attached to them, admin. have proven to the world that neglecting your general education when you are a kid will ultimately turn you into the type of person that runs the average school in America. And having admin. like the average school heads of today is like having had Donald Trump for President. The two parties and their politics in this case are one and the same!

    • @annaburns2865
      @annaburns2865 2 роки тому +2

      Actually that is not true. You make it sound like just anyone can be an administrator. Administrators get their jobs because of nepotism. That’s why they don’t care what happens to kids at school or what they did for their own education. Because they always knew they were going to get a cushy job because of whomever their mommy or daddy or aunt or uncle or cousin was. I see a lot of these giant families in the schools and it sickens me. Especially since the rest of the average kids think they can also get by with doing nothing. Those kids that have no connections are in for a rude awakening. Many of them will probably end up in jail or on the streets. That’s the biggest problem with capitalism. It’s not what you know it’s who you know. And how much money the person that you know has. A person just starting out on their own can never reach that potential. These admin are setting kids up for failure because frankly they don’t give a shit. It has to be said.

    • @munimathbypeterfelton6251
      @munimathbypeterfelton6251 2 роки тому +2

      @@annaburns2865 Well yes, everything you said is true and I agree with you. And because a person was somebody's friend or relative, that is often how they become in charge of an establishment--because of who they know rather than what they know. And clearly they know very little because they slept right through their education! And people who are not smart tend to achieve because they know more people than they do information and they have more social skills than actual skill sets. So for those reasons, in addition to the ones you mentioned, being a school administrator doesn't require very many qualifications despite what the written job description supposedly entails.

All teachers take all students to the restroom every period. Yes.....EVERY PERIOD. According to my time gathering, I waste at least 45 min to an hour every day on this. A few years back I was a computer lab parapro. I had air conditioning in the computer lab but it didn't feel like it with all 30 computers on and in constantly use. Everyone left the computer lab looking like a hot mess. The janitor would walk in before school started and say, "It's cold in here, you're fine." The computers aren't on yet! Come back in ten minutes! We're not fine! There was a thermostat but I told it was mainly for decoration. The controls were hot, off, and cold. Hot and cold being whatever they decided the default temp should be. I complained so many times and the janitor would do the same thing. Show up in the morning and report that the room was cold and I was over reacting.
    At my last job, I had to miss half day of work to get an ultrasound because I had painful gallstones. I had turned in my two weeks notice at that point and they refused to pay out my remaining pto because I took some 4 hours to go to the doctor for my pain. Gallstones are no joke. Luckily we found out that I was having a reaction to some medication that affected the gallstones. Stopped the medicine, and the pain slowly went away within a month. Everyone has gallstones, but usually there's no need to panic unless there's pain.
