In the book Dantes stays with another women he loved, Mercedes joins a convent and her son with Mondengo not Dantes joins the military as a way to make up for his father's sins.

Alexandre Dumas was brilliant. The end of the book was perfect as in the Soviet version.
Only in Hollywood fairy tales would the relationship between Edmond and Mercedes work out.
Solzhenitsyn abandoned his first wife, who married while he was in prison to married another woman.
Aleksander Solzhenitsyn was married to Natalya Alekseevna Reshetovskaya, when he went to the gulag, she divorced him after he was released.
She marries Vsevolod Sergeevich Somov.
After his release, Solzhenitsyn was sent into exile to a settlement (the village of Berlik, Kokterek district, Dzhambul region, southern Kazakhstan). He worked as a math and physics teacher from 8th to 10th grade at the local high school by the name of Kirov.
In June 1956, by decision of the Supreme Court of the USSR, Solzhenitsyn was released without rehabilitation for the absence of a body of crime in his actions.
In October 1956, she visited her ex-husband in the Vladimir region, Torfoprodukt station, where he was a teacher at the time. . In 1957, Solzhenitsyn moved to Ryazan, and in the same year they remarried.
But the relationship was never the same, there was bitterness in him towards her, he did not forget that he was abandoned by her and that she married another while he was in prison.
Later, the two admit that they made the mistake of trying to enter the same river a second time.
Natalia devoted herself entirely to her husband. She helped him diligently in everything, fulfilled all his wishes. But his he was getting more and more distant from her.
He later ended up meeting Natalia Dmitrievna Solzhenitsyna (Svetlova) whom he married a second time.

@@ebenezer4107 Who cares about Solzhenitsyn, Scrooge? Yes, Dumas was brilliant but even brilliant people make mistakes. In this case, Mercedes was hurt just as much as Edmond so why was she tossed under the carriage? Does it have anything to do with Dumas' view of women? (One of you scoffers on these threads kept score.) As far as this version goes, the version with redemption and restoration instead of more ruthless cruelty, weigh the number of likes and dislikes and see which way the balance tips.

Remember when Kennedy cheats Jaqueline with Marilyn Monroe, more or less a man who meets a beautiful woman like Haydee. kennedy had a public image because of her ambitions, Edmond had no such concern.
let's cite the iconic Clark Gable who was branded Rhett Butler. He cehat Carol Lombard with the beautiful Lana Turner.
Only in hollywood movies for such nonsense to happen.In real life, he would have slept with several women like Alexandre Dunas or cheta Mercedes with beautiful women like Kennedy and Clarckk Gable.

Love this film despite all that was omitted from the book and other adaptations. The Gerard Depardieu Mini-Series is one of the best adaptations out there, IMHO.

In the book Mondego he is not a rich nobleman, he is a poor fisherman and he gets rich dishonestly. But in the film they changed him, Mercedes chooses to marry a rich noble and radically changed his life.
It could change by making Mercedes abandon Edmond and choosing Mondego for being rich and handsome, she corrupting herself, forgetting her old love between wealth and sex, instead of getting married simply to give a father to her son.
Her marrying Mondego despite being rich and noble just because she was a son, not enjoying his wealth and social status, thinking about his old love was too cliché.
"He was on the mountain, whence he could see all the kingdoms of the earth. A mountain all the more terrible that it is a visionary one. Those who are on its apex are in a dream.
Palaces, castles, power, opulence, all human happiness extending as far as eye could reach; a map of enjoyments spread out to the horizon; a sort of radiant geography of which he was the centre. A perilous mirage!

Great stuff! The Count of Monte Cristo was a movie about revenge. The main character's philosophy is he needs to 'repay' the revenge his friend has done on him.
You portrayed that very well here.
Here are a few things we can improve a bit further:
(1) Transitions: They're a bit unsmooth in some areas. I think that has to do with either the editing software you're using or technique. Add a little more polish.
(2) Introduction: The moment that starts Monte Cristo's 'revenge' journey is when Monte finds out his friend, Fernard, betrayed him. This happens in the beginning (as you've just portrayed), but I would've included this in the very beginning.
(3) Show Monte Cristo's breakdown of the betrayal: For years, Monte Cristo didn't understand why he was in prison. Then, he suddenly figured out out through some critical thinking with his mentor. Show that part and interleave with the breakdown of scenes.
That's it. This video is a MUCH better dissection of the philosophy of the Count of Monte Cristo than the Matrix one.

This great story is not so black and white as to be just about revenge, it represents the growth in character and strength of an individual who was completely impotent in the world he operated. Brutally imprisoned, he uses this opportunity to develop his intellectual ability and change the belief systems that got him into his woeful predicament, he then returns to his glamorous high society to dominate it skilfully with his superior knowledge and power. A story of a phoenix rising from the flames to encourage us all.

This version is very superficial.
When you look at the ridiculous fictional story of Edmond and Mercedes, believing that that first love would perhaps be Edmond's great love, that Albert would be enough to unite the two.
And watching the movie Admiral (2008) which tells the true History of the passion between Admiral Alexander Kolchak, the beautiful and young Anna Timiryova, both being married and having children, left their families to be together. Contrasting the fictional scene between Edmond and Mercedes and the true History between Kolchak and Anna Timiryova, I see how the screenwriter has no idea about relationships
And the ridiculous phrase:
“God will give me justice
I remember the adversities that Anna Timiryova faced because of her passion for Kolchak, but she remained steadfast and in the end she never gave up hope and had a peaceful end to life. It's not that she would go out dueling the Bolsheviks, but that she could hope and make her life better.

Though this is different from the book... the book would not play as a movie. Personally this be the far better story, the book was too dark. The book has no feelings left between Mercedes and Edmond... that plays dead, and a great failing of Dumas, as it is a less humane and humanistic story. The book mirrors Dumas the author personal story of his father Thomas who was born to a Nobleman in exile and a beautiful slave whom he loved and married, as his grandparents, this had a similar story. Dumas grandfather sold his father Thomas and his wife for money to return in style to Paris, and to reestablish himself. He promised to buy back Thomas, and eventually did but made no effort to purchase his wife's freedom despite his love of her. We can assume that she having been a slave would not have played well in Parisian society prior the the Revolution. So adapting this aspect of his family story to the book, may be true to life but is not true in any spiritual or obligation sense. Remember Dumas grandfather and grandmother were married Catholic, and in abandoning her it was moral sin by the breach of his marriage promise made to God. So one can see why the book cannot play as a movie.

@Cratílo Sousa Well actually, there is an exchange between Abbe Faria and Dantes, which is shown in flashback in the miniseries - it shows Faria revealing to Dantes, how he was stitched up, and also a flashback of how he got arrested in the first place. I don't know how much of the miniseries you saw, but if you gave it at least a half hour, you might have seen that for yourself....

Not everyone is prepared for a psychologically stronger story.
Dumas was brilliant and wonderful. It doesn't mean that people don't like the novel, Edmond's reaction in the livor was similar to that of Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn who wrote The Gulag Archipelago with his first wife who married someone else while in a gulag. The film lacks maturity and psychological consistency. Solzhenitsyn married another woman and never got over his first wife's grief.
The hollywood screenwriter doesn't know much about what life is about, they live in the fantasy world.

Edmond Dantes neither in this ridiculous movie nor in the book is Jesus, despite being betrayed, he does not have the characteristics of Christ. He is not Prince Myshkin.
