What a great band they are, as someone who loves Beatles, early Who, Cramps, White Stripes etc. they really hit my sweet spot . Loving the Summer vibe to this one, amazing they got La La on board, the B side is amazing too :) Looking forward to seeing them live in Acapela Cardiff :)
Excellent single with great potential! Could this be the one that finally gives the lovely Flavia and Martin their much deserved commercial breakthrough? Time will tell!
Wot!?! Did I time slip back to a summer in the 1970s? A good song, well performed and very good musical arrangement behind it. Nice! Thank you Courettes! Well done!
The Courettes return with two new songs from their forthcoming album, both featuring legendary Crystals’ singer La La Brooks. A match made in heaven for one of the hardest-working bands in garage rock. Anyone here knows just how we feel about The Courettes at Louder Than War. They are one of the hardest-working bands around, a non-stop garage-soul machine that, since we first championed them, have crossed the world numerous times, bringing their now Spector-wall-of-sound steeped rock ‘n’ roll to the masses. One small push skyward and they are perfectly poised to explode. On their new single, California, they double down on the more doo-wop style that they brought more to the fore on their Back In Mono album. Three years have passed since then but with Italian re-recordings, American-released compilations, and Christmas singles, their momentum has not let up. The fact that their new album, released this September, is titled The Soul Of The Fabulous Courettes, it is clear the path they are heading down…and the confidence they continue to have in themselves. The new single combines that style with some great Bryds-like West Coast jangle and, of course, a cutting pure fuzz garage-rock solo to boot. Hooking up with La La Brooks from The Crystals to add to the great track must surely have been a dream come true for the Denmark-based couple.
Louderthanwar.com On the song, singer/guitarist Flavia Couri says “California is a song we wrote on our first tour in California last year. We wanted to bring all the sunshine and some psychedelic vibes from The Byrds, the Laurel Canyon, and tons of 12-string guitars to our songwriting. But somehow the lyrics kept some black clouds. It talks about travelling and leaving your loved ones behind. Any musician on the road can relate to this. Although you can have a great time around the world, you’re always missing someone. Home is really where your love is.” The emotion comes across in spades, along with the pure joy of positivity. Perfect for our new times and a deserving summer hit for the band.
Y'know, it's kind of a pity that MTV doesn't play music-videos, anymore. 'Cause this song would've been in heavy rotation for the summer, and a staple for every summer after.
Love this band, and especially this song! Please come back to Los Angeles and play some shows!! Would love to see you live in concert!
I’m getting a Kirsty MacColl vibe about her voice and that’s a great compliment
