PREMISE
X-Men '97 continues the story of X-Men: The Animated Series (1992-1997). In both series, mutants are people born with superhuman abilities that generally manifest during puberty. The X-Men are a team of mutant superheroes founded by Professor Charles Xavier to protect mutants and humans alike. At the end of The Animated Series, Xavier nearly dies in an assassination attempt and is taken to space to be healed by the alien Shi'ar Empire. X-Men '97 begins a year later and sees the X-Men facing new challenges without Xavier, under the leadership of their former adversary Magneto. As with the original series, X-Men '97 combines action, soap opera-style drama, and exploration of serious topics.[

I’ve been a huge X-Men fan since I saw the first 2 movies when I was 4. I got into the comics and loved a good amount of them, and as much as I love the movies and the franchise, I always wanted something closer to the comics. This show gave me *EVERYTHING* I could’ve asked for bro. Phenomenally written characters with complex relationships, stunning and dazzling animation with some clear anime inspirations mixed in there, some of the comic panels literally coming to life, there was so much I loved about this show. I can’t wait to see more, and it really has me wanting to check out The Animated Series. Undoubtedly the best thing Marvel has put out in some time, I’d say it’s one of the best things they’ve ever done *PERIOD.*
It’s close, but this maybe my favorite show of the year so far, with only one other fighting for that spot for me atm, and maybe one later this year being the only other I think can possibly beat it for me. Cannot wait for Season 2!
I watched the original show this year in preparation for X-Men ‘97. I absolutely loved X-Men ‘97!!!! I loved the story, characters and action. I also love how comic booky it is. Gambit’s death is so emotional and so sad. I had almost completely forgotten that Cyclops, Storm, Nightcrawler and Rogue are actually really cool characters.
X-men 97 better win an Emmy 🏆

As someone who only saw most of the 90s animated series recently, I think this was a great and more mature continuation of the 90s series and I can’t wait to see more from this series!
Fun fact, Nightcrawler is a Christian and Wolverine went to church in the OG 90s series.

Very cool! I love Nightcrawler and Christianity. Another fun fact: Ice-Man and Northstar are both gay in the comics and the shows/movies have never shown that.

I started to watch X men the animated series a couple of years ago and finished earlier this year, and I loved this season. I felt that it was able to balance every single conceivable element, built stakes that payed off, and paved the road for what’s to come. So I can’t wait for season 2. 10/10
This season was awesome and gave me everything I ever wanted as a x-men fan especially as a huge fan of the original series back in the day and I am so happy that this new series is everything i ever wanted and also makes me happy to bring back marvel animation finally back from the dead after years of bullshit from marvel animation from the past decade but that’s just my opinion.
I love how they show how cool cyclops is. The way they used Jean powers is incredible
It was fantastic. Definitely one of my favorite shows of the year. Even though the main show runner was fired I think marvel needs to get some of these writers for the mcu X-men. As for my context for the show I watched it for the 1st time in preparation for this show

I'll give it a 97/10 and say it's either the best season of any Disney+ show or the second best (and no. 1 is Andor).

I saw a few episodes of the first season, so I went into this with not knowing much about the OG series, but I still had fun! Loved the animation, and the characters were written to perfection!

Besides batman, the x-men animated series was my favorite. It is easily my favorite Disney Plus show and can't wait till season 2 !
To be honest, I was worried that Disney would keep it in a kiddie territory like they did with a show that I grew up with (That’s So Raven.) So, I am glad to hear that it lived up to the original series and hopefully, we will get Spider-Man’94 😬🤞🏻

Loved watching the team use their powers together. Plus Cyclops and Jean and Magneto and Jubilee really show off new skills or skill moves. Great writing too "Have them mind your weather." and "Have them weather your mind." So good. Oh and as a Nightcrawler lover, this show was fantastic.
I could've gone without the Shiar stuff. But it was nice to see the team try and survive with Xavier. Also, as a Wolverine lover, they didn't highlight him much. But they probably highlighted him too much in the 90s so maybe they were compensating
I want to watch the whole season a second time before solidifying my thoughts, but this might honestly be my favourite MCU project alongside Infinity War
Fair review. This show far exceeded expectations. I wish the pacing was a touch slower, but I understand if the creators wrote it not knowing if they would have a second season. I hope they can maintain the quality for next season. I also dislke Sh'ar plots in general. Loved this show. Look forward to next year.

I watched the original animated series with my siblings growing up, and rewatched it as an adult before X-Men 97 was released! So satisfied that its a continuations instead if a reboot! Thank you for sharing your thoughts! 🙏🏽💪
Also, I get in the last few years people have turned on guest hero appearances, but I’ve always loved when the cartoons and comics did that. Which is why I really dug how they handled those sick cameos

Rogue- she got a minor redemption and she became one of my favourite characters when she said “his name was Gambit! Remember it!”
Beast- He was sidelined but I liked that he remained a 🤓 even when they were all gonna die 💀
Cyclops- He was an amazing leader, badass, loving husband and father so he’s infinitely better than his portrayal in the movies
Jean- Jean’s whole relationship with Scott, Cable and Madelyne was really well done. And she was damn fine
Sunspot- His character was very good, a young hero shunned out by his own family and the newest member of the X-Men. Hopefully ties between him and his mother can improve
Jubilee- Jubilee was very cool and fun especially in the last 2 episodes and her relationship with Sunspot was very cute
Bishop- He was sidelined but his scenes were cool
Gambit- a fierce, badass, unfairly treated hero still sacrificed himself for the girl who chose another man and the rest of Genosha’s safety “The name’s Gambit, mom ami. Remember it” will be regarded as one of the best lines EVER
Wolverine- Logan was sidelined but his scenes were still very cool especially the action scenes
Storm- Storm’s side story was very good and it showed Storm’s perseverance and tenacity. She was also a very good leader in the last few episodes and she’s damn badass
Forge- a loving guy and cool guy
Kurt- Kurt was loyal, kind, loving, morally good and still could be a badass blue warrior
Cable- hard shelled cable has a soft spot inside him ❤
And Magneto and Charles’ friendship was very fleshed out and well done
Now we just need Spider-Man 98 to actually happen because damn it if there’s one series that needs to return more then ever it’s Spider-Man animated series especially after x-men 97 giving us everything we ever wanted as a x-men fan myself but that’s just my opinion.

I appreciate you acknowledging the major flaw with the movies - the lack of actual team dynamics. I found that First Class would go on to do it best, but then even the Deadpool movies did a fine job with an ensemble (if you ask me). I’m a big colossus fan, and love how he was handled there 💪
Yes I agree with what you said about Wolverine. I love how when they used him, it was sparingly which made up for really cool moments. Actually I love how every X-man got an epic moment. So glad Cyclops got some respect after so long too.

I’m 19 right now, so I’ve never seen an episode of x-men the animated series in my life, that being said, I’m a big marvel fan outside of just the movies so I’m very familiar with these characters and have been pretty upset with how fox handled them in a lot of the stuff. Even the stuff that I loved in the fox movies like Hugh Jackmans wolverine was nothing like what he is in the comics. But this, this was incredible. Genuinely this show is the comics come to life and you can tell the people who worked on this show genuinely care. Man do I want to see more of this in the mcu going forward. I don’t know why it has to be animated to feel like this show did, although, nothing wrong with an animated show. I love animation. But I don’t think it has to stay there. I think if you put people behind the projects who care about the characters they’re putting on screen, we can see more like this in live action too. I love this show!

Never saw the original series, but after watching this I just might have to go back and binge it.
This was hands down one of the best Marvel products to ever come out after Endgame-heck, it even surpasses a lot of pre-phase 4 MCU content. Even as someone who was never much of an X-Men fan as I was much more a fan of the Avengers (especially Spider-Man), I loved the heck out of this!
Also, just gotta give a shout-out to the Newton Brothers who absolutely COOKED with the new rendition of this show’s theme.
What I don't understand is what happened to Morph. In the original series he had his normal face all the time if we wasn't changing into another character and acted like a normal person. In this show he has a face like the question and acts like the alien from American Dad. He's like the Jar Jar Binks of the show

As someone who didn’t grow up with the original series, this show had me hooked from the first episode. Everything was so well done and I can’t wait to see where it goes from here!

Nice review. I think the one thing you ought to say differently is not that the material is inaccessible. It's a bad idea, it always has been. The best shows don't underestimate their audience. That's why this one did better.

I was hoping you were tuned into this series lol. My fav Marvel series (counting the OG series too) since Spiderman:animated series and Daredevil for sure. HM's: Jessica Jones and Loki. I really hope they do translate this to there live action movies going forward.
This was phenomenal and I came to this with no context of the OG show. I was introduced to the X-Men through the Fox trilogy and this show was a masterpiece

My only complaint would be the dialog. It just felt like it was more geared towards being read rather than actually spoken. But I will say that these last few episodes seem to have gotten better so I'm really excited for what comes next
I watched without any context and I liked it. However I have to say that the pace was a bit too fast in my opinion. I mean, it was good but some stories could have used a little more time, also the characters didn't get much time in my opinion. It's good, but it could have been better
I loved this season as a whole but for background I was a little late to watching the new episodes as I went back and watched the entire 90's cartoon before watching any of the new episodes. I got to watch the first 6 episodes of 97 back to back and I will say the excitement for the new episode got better and better each week. I also liked how each episode ended on a cliffhanger which only built up to the next episode. Also, the theme and classic intro with certain characters coming in and out of the intro based on who was an active part of the story and if characters came back they came back in their new look.
Watched the og series this year, and thought that on its own was very good, so seeing where they took things here was incredible.
Incredible writing and storytelling, amazing show and hope marvel incorporates this quality in live action projects

I saw X-Men The Animated Series a month before this new show and I loved it. X-Men '97 Season 1 is easily the best Disney+ Show that I've ever watched.

Cyclops and Jean were two standouts this season for me. I feel they were both done perfectly and I wish they would adapt them like this in live action. Seeing Cloak and Dagger was awesome and all the morph cameos were equally perfect. Hoping we get Psylocke next season as well as the Hellfire Club if Sebastian Shaw is still alive

Never watched the original series and this is my first introduction to animated X-Men. I loved this show. IMO it's the highest quality MCU we have gotten in a long time

Interesting that we see T’Chaka and not T’Challa despite the 90s cartoons having T’Challa and saying his father is dead. Are Marvel really that scared to use T’Challa after Chadwick’s passing?
I think Marvel would just like to stay away from touch T’Challa since Chadwick’s performance was immaculate and they want to protect that legacy throughout any adaptation they do going forward.
@@Film_AddictI understand that for stuff in the MCU but in a multiverse project like this where Black Panther T’Challa was previously shown to exist it’s odd to remove T’Challa. The character should continue to live one
Yeah that's a weird choice. I wonder if they changed it simply because most viewers are thinking of the MCU Black Panther linage timeline.

This isn't giving the show a pass, but ive noticed that a lot of dialogue in x men stories of various forms of media is expository. I think thats just the nature of the content of x men stories, but we have seen it done more subtly, like in first class or logan
I never saw the X-men original series as I was only 1 years old. So watching this was fun. However, as I only watched the X Men films prior to this, so some storylines felt odd to me like Rogue having a relationship with Magneto
Yes not a fan of that at all. If you follow the comic and tv show timeline she would have been around 13 and he would have been around 60. So bad.

@justpsyco2226 loki is really great, but it can't touch the xmen in terms of reflecting the deep and rich storytelling found in the comics. If the mcu wants truly great stories to tell then they need to go back to the source material.

My positives for this show: literally everything sean said. Although one difference would be that i watched X-Men the animated series in prep for X-Men 97 and it was totally worth it!!
Negatives:
I didn't like that ep 5 literally had 3 cheating sessions/love triangles. I just find this annoying n stupid

I've seen the first season. I can't watch everything being released. I've never presented myself as a big fan of Clone Wars and Bad Batch didn't really hook me.

You should keep watching it gets better and better.
I liked it a lot but was it worth a weekly release? No. We were promised a future of streaming content at a click of a button not a model of well tune in next week, no that’s cable and DVR exactly what they are for so again I keep going back to why are they doing this and B why are people putting up with this shit? I have no interest in waiting three months for something when they have it ready to turn in it’s not a network so I just am done with this streaming model

It was beyond my expectations. I thought it was going to be a steaming load of woke garbage but it was surprisingly balanced and well done in all aspects. I hope that it doesn't evolve like Young Justice (good in the first two season then becomes hard to stomach as it progresses).
