Early psychedelia...where folk rock transitioned to harder rock....I ABSOLUTELY ADORED THIS SONG. I am born and raised in San Francisco, graduated from high school at the beginning of the Summer of Love. The epicenter at the time. I ALWAYS loved the BYRDS!

The lyrics of Eight Miles High were the Byrds' impressions of London, during their concert tour of England.

"Eight Miles High" can be taken as the first bona fide psychedelic rock song. It dropped in March of 1966 preceding The Beatles "Rain" by two months. The guitar lick is supposed to resemble the sound of a sitar, if Coltrane could be played on a sitar or a guitar. The harmonies in the verses are a hallmark sound of The Byrds, along with the jingle jangle guitars. But what struck me the most listening along just now was how the drums also laid down a template for other bands to follow in the decades since. When you're ready for more from The Byrds, check out "I'll Feel A Whole Lot Better" and "Mr. Tambourine Man" along with "Tulsa County" and "Hickory Wind" from when they turned towards country music a few years later.

This was early psychedelia. It was the transition from folk rock to a harder rock era and trippier psychedelia. I absolutely ADORED this song and LOVED THE BYRDS, from their folk stuff on. Growing up in San Francisco, graduating from high school at the beginning of the Summer of Love, it was the epicenter during that era.

London can be cold and grey. Music folks referred to the London Sound, since British bands ruled the airwaves. When the Byrds went there a band called the Small Faces were a leading Mod band.

The Byrds brought me from folk music into folk/acoustic rock. Of course, I was listening to early Dylan and the Byrds became famous covering his songs. So, initially, a short trip. Music changed FAST in the '60's and before the end of that iconic decade I was going to see Hendrix, Cream, and many others. Quite a trip, indeed!

Note Don McClean references the Byrds and this song as well as the Beatles and the Manson Murders in the lyrics from his song “American Pie” -
“Helter skelter in a summer swelter
The Byrds flew off with a fallout shelter
Eight miles high and falling fast
It landed foul on the grass”

    "Eight Miles High"
Eight miles high, and when you touch down
You'll find that it's stranger than known
Signs in the street, that say where you're going
Are somewhere just being their own
Nowhere is there warmth to be found
Among those afraid of losing their ground
Rain gray town, known for its sound
    In places, small faces unbound
Round the squares, huddled in storms
Some laughing, some just shapeless forms
    Sidewalk scenes, and black limousines
    Some living, some standing alone

During the Beatles 1965 US Tour, David Crosby became their LA contact when they played there. Crosby supplied the Beatles with pot and acid and brought them around to the clubs and parties of the LA music scene. The Byrd's cover of Dylan's My Back Pages is definetly worth a listen.

Can you believe all the great music from way back in the 60’s? I remember this song on the radio, it was psychedelic, but that’s what was in style. The Hippy scene was on its way & that wasn’t a bad experience, they represented anti war, no racism, sexual revolution, everything the previous generation was doing that wasn’t right!👍🥰

Whenever I hear this song, two others come to mind, both by The Dukes of Stratosphear: "25 O'Clock" and "You're My Drug". They did a very passable forgery of classic psychedelia. Meanwhile, the Byrds remain an inspiration to any who tread in their old path.

This song was written and released years before the jazz-rock fusion movement of the 1970s. "Eight Miles High" is one of the first psychedelic rock songs-- maybe even *the* first. Pioneering 1960s psychedelic rock with some influence from jazz (Coltrane) and Eastern music.

This song is often cited as being the very first psychedelic rock song. They wrote the song about flying over to England to play in 1965...thus the " rain gray town " is London. But the song is also kind of about drugs. The music culture & counter-culture were discovering recreational drugs at the time ( primarily marijuana & LSD ). In fact the song was banned by some radio stations in the USA because of alleged drug references. The music & song structure was heavily influenced by John Coltrane & Ravi Shankar. Read this, it's really interesting....en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eight_Miles_High

Definitely London. The whole Liverpool scene and sound was already firmly in the past by this time, especially in the UK. It swept all before it in '63, but petered out quite rapidly during the first half of '64, overtaken by London-based bands like the Stones, the Kinks and the Who. I was there, I lived through it.
