I never realized this, but the minecart ride in Resident Evil 4, is a reference to the minecart chase scene from Temple of Doom.

    • @biggiecheese726

RE4 is basically Temple of Doom. A cult takes over a town with religious artifacts, there’s a castle with a small person who’s in cahoots with the cult and there’s a minecart chase, all while a young blonde woman is constantly screaming and is attracted to the hero. Not to mention they explicitly reference Raiders with the boulder

If I had to be petty on the nitpicks here as well. What I personally find it less impactful was the transformation of Chief Mendez.
Because in the original after the barrel of gasoline explods on him, we see in grotesque up close shot on how he transformed. As for the remake, the barrel explods and out of the smoke he's already in that state. So we couldn't see in horror how he'll present himself to us with his creepy stance. We just jump into the fight no, mind potentially being fearful what transpired before.
(Yeah, I was scared to fight him the first time it happened and obviously caused me to die to him. Because nothing was as disturbing, aside from the first Plaga came out.)

    • @cuttrogue
      @cuttrogue 8 місяців тому

It's worse for Salazar, he just falls into the dark void and reimmerges already transformed. It's mindblowing Capcom stopped animating transformations in these new RE games and there's no valid justification for this.

The remakes gun play would’ve been so much better without the RNG bloom whenever you shoot in quick succession. This on top of enemy’s being bullet sponges with hardly any hit stun and with how slow Leon moves leads to gun play feeling annoying rather then fun. It’s still a challenge which in of itself is enjoyable, but it just not very fun to play especially on repeat playthroughs.

I'm gonna be real, the first time Leon meets Ada in the OG was just such a great moment on showing how Leon is much more on top of his game as a USA agent because after the whole slow motion, backflip and knife on the neck, Leon had his hand on Ada's gun, took it from her, ejected the clip AND threw it away instead of just letting her keep the gun after all of that because he still likes her?
Well, I still prefer the OG game, and I will say to play the OG first before the Remake to get a full grip on what was changed from the OG, but to anyone who says otherwise... "No thanks, bro"

Leon is also much tighter in how he controls. He genuinely feels like an athletic superspy, no movement wasted (at least in my hands, once I've gotten quite good) whereas by comparison in 4 he feels like how I think chris redfield should feel. Or drunk. Those two might not be mutually exclusive.

I actually liked that moment in re4 2005 as well because the last time Leon saw Ada it was back in 1998 when re2 came out and to see her again after six years felt rewarding where in the 2023 remake she sounded like she was more cold and distant towards Leon in contrast to the other games where it was nice to see her and Leon interact again!

I much as I liked RE4make, I wouldn't really call it a an improvemwnt over the original. It feels more like the Bowser's Inside Story remake where the added stuff and updated visuals are neat, but the previous game was already of high quality and hasn't aged to the point of the improvements in the remake being that game-changing. It's more of a neat alternative than a definitive version.

I played the original for the first time 2 years ago. So I have no nostalgia to it. And I can honestly say it’s up there as one of my favorite games. So when I heard about the remake of course I was really excited. I got it played the whole game and while I liked it it’s gonna be a while before I play it again. I never disliked the Ashely mechanic in the original but the remake genuinely made me mad. I hate how there’s no “wait” option she ether follows or follows a far which makes no sense to me. The way every character feels so slow and sluggish makes moving around in fast paced moments more of chore. I love the gameplay especially the knife mechanic the remake isn’t something I’ll be looking forward to replaying in a while compared to how I love replaying the original a lot.

I agree with you on the villains in the remake. In the Original they were the Perfect examples of Feux affable Evil.
Those are villains who act polite and Friendly even to the Heroes, but it‘s all an Act and in the inside they are pure evil Villains that just want to see you suffer. This is the case of 4‘s Villains. They all talk friendly to Leon most of the time, while both we and Leon can see through their False Modesty and see them as the Sadistic Monsters they really are. Yet Leon’s sarcasm and The Villains feux affably evil nature always made their interactions more fun and enjoyable and it‘s sad it isn‘t in the remakes. Yes they still act as Gentelmans but their interactions Still make them less Fun to watch.

Honestly, I largely enjoyed RE4 remake, and while I don’t think it’s a replacement for the original, it does compliment it in its own (heh) separate ways. Sure, I do prefer the OG’s more campy tone and think the villains are more much memorable (really wish they still at least kept the video calls from Salazar), but also like the more grounded, character-driven direction the remake went while still keep the charm with the Merchant’s dialogue and Leon’s constant quips. And while the added gameplay additions like weapon switching, strafing and the parry don’t dramatically overhaul the gameplay, they’re still welcome additions that change how you approach the gameplay and make then game feel far snappier and fast-paced, especially when on the higher difficulties. One big aspect I think the remake largely improves upon is the level design, since the OG RE4 is relatively linear where while there are some separate paths to take, once you’re done with an area, there’s little incentive to go back for it other than to pick up some missing treasures. Whereas each area in RE4R feels much larger and more realized, especially the castle, and allows you to backtrack in its entirety up until a certain point in order to do some optional merchant requests or reach some areas you couldn’t access beforehand.
There are some minor gripes I have with it, like the gacha rolls for the charms being BS, the lack of i-frames making it easier than it should be to get mobbed by enemies, and only being able to put weapons and attachments in the item box instead of any of your items. But overall, I’d say this’s a stellar remake and managed to surpass RE2R as my favorite RE Engine RE game, and with the addition of Separate Ways and how much it expanded on Ada’s side of the story, it’s pretty much everything I could’ve hoped for in an RE4R remake: changing enough to where old players still get a fresh experience, but still keeping the core of what made the OG great for newcomers.

The OG is bit more campy and restricted by the technology. Cutscene bosses and a bit too hard in some places.
The Remake is a more serious and streamlined. The voice acting for some isn’t the best. It’s also easier in some places.
That being said both are good and I feel like the Remake tends to show the potential of the original.

I'm sure the remake is a good game and I can see why stuff like the updated gameplay and the character expansions to Luis and Ashley could be seen as "improvements," but I honestly just can't get into it because people have been lauding it as a masterpiece that's objectively superior to the original and that the original is actually a dated janky and problematic game that ruined the series for decades and people just like because they're incels with nostalgia goggles.
It's the reason why I refuse to play it, on top of me just thinking that RE4 didn't need a remake to begin with unlike the old PS1 and tank-control games, and seeing the comparisons to it, especially from Crowbcat, really confirmed my fears that a lot of times the game just feels like a soulless shot-for-shot remake that lacks what made the original so good (I once compared it Hollywood remakes and people got so angry at me, it was great, lol).
Also, I find it funny how people say that Ada's new design is superior to her RE4 dress because that one looked "so goofy and impractical" (nice respect you guys have for iconic designs there, guys) and yet she's still wearing fuckin' *HIGH HEELS* which is like the #1 impractical design choice for female characters... also, her new dress in Separate Ways looks like *SHIT*

Now keep in mind I have never been a Fan of the RE Games, just not a Horror Game Fan nor do I like the Tank Controls, but I REALLY liked it. I took my time and beat it. I still have to go back and play the Extra Content, but it was a lot of Fun and I can see why its considered a Classic. I do plan to get the Remake some day so I can Compare it, but I think its rather telling that no one really talks about it anymore. No one talks about it because 2023 was absolutely STACKED with high tier games . Essentially every reviewer that was a big time fan of the original has stated that it is an improvement on the original but still allows both to retain their own flavor. The first one was is considered a classic because it revolutionized survival/action horror when it came out 20 years ago. It is essentially impossible for the remake to have the same impact from a mechanical level that the first one did. So the fact that everyone talked about it so highly regardless of that fact should tell you that you NEED to play the remake. You’re approaching this from the wrong angle my friend…..sorry to tell ya. You aren’t taking context into this situation at all which is clouding your judgement .

Also how is me deciding to get the OG Game first somehow the "wrong approach"? Yes, most agree that Remake improves the Game Play, but it didnt do anything amazing with it. Like you said OG RE4 did a lot at the time, and still does. The fact that I got it shortly after Remake came out and still found it a blast to play, when I am not a RE Game Fan, says a lot.

Awesom video, MangaKamen. I liked your perspective of both games when in regards of your facusing the remake. But here's my opinion to you:
For correction parrying can affect combat too. Like if you do a perfect parry (identified with quick flash context sensitive) it instanty stuns the enemy, giving the open for melee attack. This tactic is perfect against Armaduras which it reveals its Plaga form after melee attack and kill it with flash grenade which slightly saves ammor for later.
And as for Ashley to be honest i prefer the remake one over the original due to improved relationship and characters of her. Now to be clear i like the original and i don't find her personality is annoying at worst but after i've seeing Leon and Ashley reunion in the castle i begin to prefer her than the original as Ashley in the remake takes a boot of her courage felt realistic witthout feeling overpowering Leon which is my favourite highlight of the remake. But yeah i missed her falling from jetski during island escape to give sense of humour after their trials and tribulations. This is same goes for Luis Sera and a choice of him getting killed by Krauser instead of Saddler is a clever choice made by Capcom as it makes sense for personal guard to clean up the mess and makes Saddler more calculated and i prefer the remake Krauser encounter than in the original as i have more control to the combat (not dissing the original as i like the original Krauser's first encounter too). To be fair though the removal of "ballistics" quote is first appeared in he original VR game so it's not a new thing. Ada Wong's new VA is decent for her work but i think she need more time to improve her voice acting.
I agree that stealth in this game felt underwhelming at best for the game as enemies don't instantly detects you even at very close of them that is high chance to be detected. I like the knife mechanic to have durability and a cost which persuades players to prioritise of what should be spend, the same goes for body armour which also available in all difficulty. But it irks me that enemies now bullet spongy which limits player to use melee attack and some nerfs like accuracy of magnum weapons now worse than the originial and how they butchered the Handcannon's exclusive damage upgrade which is kinda insulting (thank god they kept infinite ammo upgrade) considering the original full upgraded Handcannon felt like you hold a handheld artillery. This is same goes to Chicago Typewritter (now Chicago Sweeper) but i appreciate the weapon needs to be upgraded as opposed to full upgrade from the start. I'm also appreciate more collectable weapons in the remake, giving more explorations
By the end of the day i view both original and remake of Resident Evil 4 as equal. Both have their own merits which i interest to play both of them (hope i get the HIgh end laptop and the game too) for funzies. And most importantly i'm happy both versions of the game can coexist as opposed to remove the original to make a space for the remaster/remake like what Rockstar games and Blizzard Entertainment did to their own masterpiece

You have great points and many I agree with. I disagree with the QTs though. Just a personal thing really, so not knocking you for it. I always hated them, specially with the Krauser fight >.< You have NO idea HOW MANY TIMES I have to see the same thing over and over cuz I kept pressing wrong buttons and my reaction times are pretty poor. XD Makes your hand hurt too. So the remake version really made it lot easier for people like me.
I also do agree with the main villains of the game. They're not as fun as their older versions. I thought I try shooting those intercom things that Ramon would talk to Leon with to see if I get an easter egg reaction from him....but...sadly nothing :C Just some dumb creepy laughing. Man he really became boring
I'm surprised you didnt say anything about Merchant's change in personality though. What do you think of that? For me, it really made it feel like we're best friends already lol He's gotten quite fun, and pretty funny. One tiny little nick pick is that he's... a little TOO chatty...but thats just me. I do love him to death lol

I beat the OG at least 30 times not including all the side content I've finished several times as well as unlocking the handcannon for my friends who weren't as good. I already beat the remake 10 times, got the platinum and I'm almost finished with my first playthrough of Separate Ways. Re4 is absolutely my favorite game, and I've mastered it inside and out. The only issues I have with the remake is the lack of the villains hacking Leon's comms and the shit talking that ensued, as well as Leon's character feeling noticeably drier personality wise.

No Thanks, Bro. The OG I think for a product of its time, a timeless experience. Now the boulder QTE is still one that I struggle with because my fingers tend to give out after being stressed like it. Otherwise, I think some of the choices while nicer, tend to age a bit faster than what came before. Hilariously, the OG was slightly more realistic with Leon igniting the fire which leads to the explosion where as the remake just shoots it like you're in Half-Life and it just explodes.

Because at this point, its clear they will change things, but how do you change a game to be more modern when no other game has a spiritual succesor or inspiration from it.
DR2 and up had combo weapons so even they didnt fully replicate using only single items as weapons.
Also would they change some tricks and cheese strats used in the original and kinda troll the players like when Leon falls through the floor in the remake when in the village. (I honestly would love that)

Ashley in the OG felt like an actual character the player was in charge of protecting and rescuing. In the remake she feels like a tourist just tagging along for a fun ride. Take the first garrador fight for example, in the OG you have the option to take Ashley with you, in the remake you get separated via a scripted event.
Whichever way someone spins it. Ashley is a massive downgrade in the remake, gameplay and mechanics-wise.

Why would a cult priding themselves in self-isolation be so quick to trust Krauser?
Seeing how Oswell E Spencer funded the Overseer's projects in Revelations 2 as revealed in RE5 Lost in Nightmare's DLC, there's a strong chance Wesker/Spencer funded the military base in RE4 with vendor connections via Krauser to retrieve the sample only to of course have that promise broken. Personally I don't think even Capcom itself wants this game to be a replacement for the original (expecially since RE4 is one of their games that got ported so many times it's kinda become a joke itself).
They prob just heard people talking about a possible RE4 Remake after the others, saw that the original game still sold fine with all the ports and thought of redoing it with a modern spin.
So the whole journo praise is mostly there because they made a game that mostly applies for modern audiences. Still a goddamn good game but made with a different view. Also the many references and jokes that are still there is mostly for flavour, like many other games do. At this point I stopped being influenced by them that much.
