An inspired initiative created by the visionary Kaushiki Chakarbarty. She is the leading female vocalist in Indian classical music. Kaushiki has brought together India’s first ever all-ladies ensemble and harnesses the creative energies of contemporary India’s best young talents representing all streams of the Vedic heritage of Indian classical art.
This MERU Concert was held on 1st August 2015 at Theater Oranjerie in Roermond, The Netherlands.
Here is a stunning depiction of a piece 'Hansini' from Sakhi. Accompanying Kaushiki are,
Debopriya Chatterjee, flautist - she studied under legendary flautist Padma Vibhushan Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia. She is one of the very few performing women flautists in Indian Classical Music
Nandini Shankar, violinist - a very talented and amazing violinist, a born musician. She is trained under her illustrious grandmother Padma Bhushan Dr. N Rajam and her exemplary mother Dr. Sangeeta Shankar.
Bhakti Deshpande, Kathak dancer - she began her artistic journey at an early age under her parents and gurus. She is also blessed to have been training under Padma Vibhushan Pandit Birju Maharaj and Padma Shri Suresh Talwalkar since the age of 12.
Savani Talwalkar, tabla percussionist - she studied classical music and tabla from her legendary father, a tabla maestro Padma Shri Suresh Talwalkar as well her mother Padma Talwalkar, a well-known classical vocalist.
Mahima Upadhyay, Pakhawaj percussionist - fondly known as ‘The Pakhawaj Princess’, she carries a 400 year old legacy of unbroken Pakhawaj family tradition. Mahima has received training under her father, the great Pakhawaj Maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar Upadhyay.

we just had them in tonight in n Chicago durga puja Mesmerizing concert with dance, Pakhwaz, tabla violin and flute and rendition of vocal performance, audience was awed by their creativity and rendition one after another. brilliant young talents, could not take our eyes or mind for one second, they were so engaging. best of luck and hope your SaKhi group touches the sky in a short time.

Well planned, structured, coordinated and presented. There was a great synthesis of not only vocal, instrumental and dance elements but also in north and South Indian elements. Therefore this was a success in displaying the majesty of our classical traditions. Which makes one wonder how many urban Naxals were sitting watching and internally sneering at this event.

Great music and dance from a talented ensemble. Nice effort but I found some major problems - not with the artistes but with the sound mixing and camera work.
The sound mixer does not highlight the percussion at all. It is obvious with the tabla and pakhawaj where both players are trying to play harder to get a clearer sound. In fact , only when Savani Talwalkar recites the dance bol, does the sound get enhanced! Similar problem with the pakhawaj. When Mahima Upadhyay plays, the resonance of the pakhawaj does not show through at all.
Also the camera is more often focussed on Kaushiki Chakraborty or Debopriya Chatterjee or Nandini Shankar when the percussionists were playing some really good bits. The only time there was some camera coordination was when it switched between the dancer and the percussionist.
Has any one been working with world tour for this group?...will be best seller...add few different dance groups(Bharat Natyam -Odisi ,etc)...more Katthhak dancers coming in from different sides of stage,with back ground photoes of various types of Bharatiya women....K ji or any one else ,please take this idea to K-Ji...Kaushiki is the ultimate a classical Lady Bharatiya singer can be-beautiful,humble and supremely talented....
