- Ragini Shankar is presenting here a beautiful melody on violin in Raga Bihag. This MERU Concert was held on 11 April 2015 at TheaterHotel de Oranjerie in Roermond, The Netherlands. Accompanying her on tabla is Ramkrishna Manohar and on harmonium is Santosh Ghante.
Ragini delights her listeners with her flawless violin performances of beautiful classical ragas. Since the tender age of four, Ragini has been fortunate to train under her renowned mother Sangeeta Shankar, and her grandmother, the legendary violinist, Padma Bhushan Dr. N. Rajam. Ragini has performed at prestigious music events in India and abroad.
Though a Hindustani Classical vocalist myself, I have been a devotee of the violin for ever. Thank you, Ragini, for uplifting my soul with your rendition of Bihaag. Such a happy raaga, played with effortless charm and beauty. Long live....

She plays it so effortlessly that too with such a nice pleasant smile and wins over the audience right away. Most artists close their eyes and are a bundle of concentration on the other hand Ragini appears like going in park for a walk careless but to produce such intricate nuances her brain must be working furiously sending signals to her hand getting constant feedback from he ears and eyes ... just amazing how much a real training can garnish ... wow clap clap calp

I heard her grandmother Smt.Rajam and late great Bismilla khan in an enthralling jugalbandhi at Chennai IIT campus may be 3/4 decades ago and now the tree has so many blossoms. Long live the tradition.

Really outstanding performance.
It reminds me of a 50 years' old performance by your grandmother. Prof. N Rajam Ji, at an All India Radio - Lucknow recording concert in 1967 when I first heard Dr Rajam playing. Her daughter, Sangeeta Shankar, was sitting on the stage with her.
Being a sr, citizen I must appreciate you having reached at this stage. Go ahead and reach its peak by the grace of God.
This show made me avoid suicide, it gave me hope... Thank you Ragini ma'am

sankara murthy the raag in itself is not very difficult. Agreed, the scale is not a direct ascending and descending. However, like other raagas this is also a matter of practice.😄

It’s called a tabla
It’s still a percussion instrument. Lol. A person saying “drum” isn’t necessarily referring to the western equivalent, like a drummer in a rock band. A bongo is a drum, a bodhrán from Ireland is a drum, a mridangam is a drum, and so is the tabla, all percussion instruments. The difference with tabla and most Indian percussion is that they’re tuneable to match the melody instrument and the tanpura (the droning) in the background… so, a drum is not necessarily referring to the western “drum set” or “drum kit” we see so often in popular music, and many other genres.

Why wait? Two minutes in, it doesn't look too hard if you can control a violin. Modulation is a little different from western styles, obviously. Just make the notes musical.
Try Skype classes. There r hundreds of teachers in both styles of great Indian music which is for the soul

Indians includes Muslims, and christians too particularly in music classical Muslim's contribution is quite visible
in the first piece,the part she played from 2:39 to 2:45 is the fixed composition. the rest is improvised. in the second piece there is 16x4 beats duration worth of composition, the rest is improvised. the fixed compositions are repeated after some improvisation to establish familiarity.

Ajanthan Jeyakumar Hindustani classical has had subtle Persian influences. It is difficult to point out where exactly, but scholars agree that there have been influences, be however slight as they may. Moreover, to term everything Persian as Islamic is rather naive if not outright idiotic.

Hi Daniel- there are an infinite number of compositions in a certain raga- a raga is much like a scale or a mode in Western Classical Music- however the description of a raag has certain complexities and restrictions to it that make it different and are necessary to play to bring out its essence.

An artist smile represent many things. It may be confidence inside them that they are playing correctly. A smile is to create pleasant atmosphere around so co-artists can also perform well with concentration. A smile is the happiness of the soul while playing raga. Only indian classical music can give this bliss and smiles. Its a kind of meditation for music lovers to play and to listen.
