This is hands down my favorite Janet song. Janet gets a lot of flack for her vocals but I think it’s a stylistic choice. You can tell she takes great care of her instrument.
I’ve always adored Janets voice. Folks don’t realize that Janet is an artist first…she likes to visualize concepts and stories, then she is a performer second…she has a knack for the theatrics…lastly I would say she is a singer. She is a perfectionist, so that’s why her head voice is the cats meow. I get that a lot of people like recording artist who can belt out and sing down but some of us really adore Ms. Jackson because it’s a thought process and creativity that goes into her projects. Folks can critique her voice but as long as her message gets out to the masses..that’s ALRIGHT with her.
Some try to discredit her for not having a big voice, but Janet can actually Sing. What I’ve noticed about her, she prefers singing her ballads and slower songs live, while lip syncin…when she dances and performs. I seen her on her last tour (I must say was amazing), and most of her vocals were live.
@@ceruleanprince7139 Not exactly. Although she sung in her softer more graceful head voice throughout her career, Rhythm Nation was not the only album she had powerful vocals. There are other songs like This time from the Janet. album, What about from the Velvet Rope album, and Trust a try from the All for you album. Those songs are more edgy and that's where Janet tends to use more of her chest voice and more power than her softer songs. This time has some incredible and powerful runs with both her chest and head voice, in What about, Janet's transition from her softer tone into a more hardcore powerful tone that she uses with her chest voice, is really amazing. Trust a try has some of Janet's most powerful vocals used with her chest voice. She generally uses her softer and graceful falsetto tone but Janet has range and power, she just uses it with select songs.
@@ceruleanprince7139 The Janet. album and tour, she had the best live vocals of her career in my opinion. She sounded powerful and soulful throughout the entire era, which was the same era that Scream came out which was some of Janet's best work in her chest voice.
Janet can sing. She doesn't have the strongest voice, but its sultry and smooth. Her voice goes good against harder dance and hip hop beats or a sexy slow jam. I think she sounds great and she also sounds great when she did SNL anytime anyplace you should review that performances.
@@estebanrico2124 she needs to react to her concerts. I think rhythm nation and velvet rope had her best vocals ever. Her tv/award show performances are pretty much just dance shows, but her concerts are always live.
I have always loved her voice. She has learned to emphasize her strengths as she's clearly not a Whitney or Mariah but I still think she has a beautiful voice.
Her voice is small but pretty, and she's mastered how to use what she has, which I think is better than trying to do crazy vocal gymnastics that are out of one's range.
I have been a Janet fan eversince 89, and she's been my inspiration all throughout the tough times of my transition life. I even went up on stage with her in 95. I ❤️ her so much. And I'm loving ur breakdown of her vocal performance here. Thank u so much for this. I never knew all the things u mentioned about her vocals. That was sooooo cool. Thank you for this 🙏 #janetjackson #igetlonely #janetfan
Loved this review! I always hated when people said she can't sing or that she whispers all the time but this clearly shows she can. You don't have to have a powerful voice to be able to sing. Also she is singing this acapella version more toned down which is why she's not belting on the original version.
Janet gets a ton of grief about her voice. She’s not Aretha but I don’t care. I love her voice. I love the airy, breathy sound. I’ve been listening to her since she started and that was in the 70’s. One of my favorite singers
I have always loved loved loved this performance and this is my all time favorite song of Janet's. Her performance of Anytime Anyplace on SNL in 1994 might be another good one to review since it was sung live.
Contrast to what other people believe, Janet really is an amazing singer and that has to do with her versatility. She is extremely agile in her falsetto tone and her head voice, but in her edgier songs, she does very well with her chest voice. Songs like Love will never do, If, Black Cat, You, Trust a try, and What about, Janet has a very developed chest voice. She just doesn't belt often in that register because her voice isn't the most powerful, but occasionally she can belt in her chest voice and can execute very well. I recommend watching her performance of Black cat on the Velvet Rope tour or listening to her song Trust a try where she does some powerful belts with her chest voice towards the second chorus leading up to the bridge and the guitar solo. Janet does however have more versatility than a lot of powerhouse vocalists do, this is because she knows when to use her chest voice and when to use her head voice. Her vocal versatility is definitely wide, and she has a lot of range too.
Yes yes yesssss @Georgina!! Liked how Janet played around with some of the phrasing compared to the original The song was written by Big Jim Wright (man in the video) who then partnered and wrote with Mariah on Emancipation (Fly like a bird & Circles to name a few) RIP Big Jim 🥰
Janet cowrote the song with her long time collaborators, jimmy jam and Terry Lewis. She writes a lot of her hits. I couldn't find anything about him wright writing the song.
Love the janet content. If your interested on more obviously live janet performances, you should check out her performance of together again on oprah. She has red hair and she sounds sick/congested but hits every note. Itd be very interesting to hear you break down how she's able to do her signature sound even when sick.
It's her style and her sound. She has a unique Angelic sound. She doesn't use chest voice often. Please listen to (Don't Mess Up This Good Thing), (Black Cat), (Scream), (What About). Those are her best chest voice songs.
I don’t know anything about vibrato, chest voice, head voice etc. but Janet has more than one type of singing. Check out Black Cat, What About, and the first verse of Love Will Never Do Without You. I think she deserves more credit...
Janet is awesome my sister is a singer ( Alabama blues hall of fame inductee) Aretta woodruff!! And she wanna do this song because Janet is awesome. Thankyou so so much been waiting forever for this video on Janet Jackson live 💗💗 she did also do a live Version of her song again if you ever want to do another Janet vocal review. I just love janet smooth tones and soft voice it’s just amazing x
I couldn’t hear the pitchy back ups, that’s how the original harmonies on the track go. This back when the end result was what mattered and not so much the process and obsession with everything live which kinda killed the magic in pop curtesy of artists like Lady Gaga who boast about performing everything live to perfection but can’t give us a tenth of the magic that Janet had in just one of her brilliant albums.
Huh? You do realize that was how it originally started, right? The end result WAS to play live. Concerts didn't rely a troupe of background dancers, video projections, pyrotechnics, etc until the '70's. They weren't technologically savvy back in the day, and had to produce an entire record using only an 8 track console. That means the singer was on one track, the background singers all sang around one mic and used one track, the entire band of musicians played live in one room (and had to play it right all the way through in one straight take), any vocal overdubs were all one one or maybe two tracks, and any additional sound effects or sequenced elements took up another two tracks. That's how all of the early Motown records, Beatles records, Elvis records and just about everything mostIy until the late '60's/early '70's. It was later when music became more producer driven in the disco era that they wanted to cut corners and started using mediocre-passable singers. Then pitch correction, synthesized music and heavily produced music came to prominence. The background vocals here ARE quite different from the record. The recording is heavily processed, layered and post produced. This is raw with only reverb, and session vocalists that aren't even on the record, since Janet and Jimmy Jam overdubbed the hell out of the vocals on the record.
@@christianjones5891 i know all that. But the evolution of pop brought a magic in records in the 80’s and 90’s that didn’t necessarily mean live everything by all means. All artists have different ways of expressing themselves and being a great instrumentalist or live performer doesn’t always translate into creating the best records. The backups here are different since they’re live but I don’t think they’re pitchy.

I think her using her head voice is a stylistic choice because of the theme of the song. She is a singer that will belt out rock songs but croone and rnb ballad.
I've been a HUGE Janet Jackson fan since she had a last name and sang Nasty :D She uses a lot of different parts of her voice, but the songs I've heard from her in more recent years have been a lot of head voice (didn't know it was called that). Nasty, Black cat, Miss you much, What'll I do, If, That's the way love goes, Any time any place, Burnitup, Again... There's a loooong list :)
She does not lip sync all the time. Yall need to stop with this narrative as if she is Madonna or Britney Spears where she cannot sing live. What yall need to do is actually find clips from her concerts because everyone does not sing live on award shows. I would recommend you do more Janet reactions, especially since you have reacted to Britney "Lipsynching" Spears and Madonna for so many videos. Let's give Janet her flowers more. If you want more of a chest voice perform from Janet, then I recommend you react to "What About"' live from her Velvet Rope Tour.
Janet said herself that she wasn't that sure of singing talent, as compared to her brothers. So, I think she's always held back, like this vocal coach has stated. If Janet developed or sang more in her chest voice, she would be less criticized for her voice. But, there's no denying she can sing. Even when I think back to her first two albums, I've said to myself, why doesn't Janet sing in her chest voice more often. Then, I think she got caught up in the sex kitten voice and stayed there for the most part.
I just recently seen this video on UA-cam of her on the Rosie O'Donnell show singing that song and I always wondered how come she didn't have any choreography or any dancers and how come she did not perform the song like she did on the soul train music awards and on other award shows including in her velvet world concert
Lol, re the backup singers: I live in NYC and I have a friend who sings last minute all the time for BIG singers on talk shows, live morning shows….etc. She learns the songs a few hours before they meet and thats it. So Ive meant to ask her, do the singers just want to save money by not flying in their own preferred vocalist, hotel, meals, etc…OR (I suspect) someone might have gotten sick last min, and they needed to fill in, but she has been booked to sing songs last min many many times. Theres no way really people who have never sang together before can really sing perfectly. 😅
No disrespect to the vocal coach and her views…although I respect her views, nobody knows “Georginia the Vocal Coach”. Janet Jackson may it be one of the greatest singers. However, she is a well known, best selling entertainers of all time. She has had great songs and great dance moves. She has also had a successful acting career…meanwhile, the “vocal coach” just has a UA-cam page where she still has to solicit users for sales. “Georginia the Vocal Coach” can critique Ms. Jackson as she wishes. But, she’ll never have the money or status that Ms. Jackson has.
Does Janet really lip-sync that much? I'm quite a new fan and I'm surprised to how much she does sing live, I'd recommend watching her Glastonbury set even with technical issues she brings it.
love you your reaction to Janet this is her thing sing in head voice I would love it you could react to patti labelle over the rainbow and would to see what you think of her voice
She is head voice period on ballads. Janet's not really a belter unless she's singing something like Black Cat with attitude. You also get a bit of chest with songs like Love Will Never Do (Without You). I'm good with that. She knows her range and stays well in it.

“Georginia the Vocal Coach” can critique Ms. Jackson as she wishes. But, she’ll never have the money or status that Ms. Jackson has.
what does money have to do with this? She's a vocal teacher...reacting to a vocal. Chill.
What a silly comment.
Ok....Now "Doesn't really Matter" at MTV Awards sounds LIVE.... u gotta check that one. I curious to see what u think.
Absolutely not.
I’m very softly spoken like Janet and we just don’t have strong chest voices, we have delicate and gentle head voices
To hear Janet's chest voice, listen to either What About (Velvet Rope Tour) or Black Cat LIVE
Do any of the Jackson's ever use chest voice?
Michael did all the time
Janet did early on in her more rock-y tracks, like "Black Cat"
She does on "Scream", "What About" and "Black Cat".
She has such control no pun intended amazing miss Jackson if ya nasty 😁
Does Janet really lip-sync that much? I'm quite a new fan and I'm surprised to how much she does sing live, I'd recommend watching her Glastonbury set even with technical issues she brings it.
she sings over the track
@@samichedly8456 over choruses yes but even powerful singers like Gaga do that
She does, a lot.
@@samichedly8456 no
Janet is known for pre-recording her tracks (due to heavy choreography), but her adlibs are usually live.
Janet does use chest voice on occasion.
Black Cat is a perfect example of her using it with distortion as well. Like Micheal
love you your reaction to Janet this is her thing sing in head voice I would love it you could react to patti labelle over the rainbow and would to see what you think of her voice
She is head voice period on ballads. Janet's not really a belter unless she's singing something like Black Cat with attitude. You also get a bit of chest with songs like Love Will Never Do (Without You). I'm good with that. She knows her range and stays well in it.
