Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays Everyone! I appreciate everyone for following along so far on this video series. I'm on the road again so the Zion to Green River VLOG is taking a holiday as well, but will return in 2023! Until then... stay safe, be happy, and cheers to all! 🎅✌
Thanks -- I really appreciate you for watching and the nice comment. There will be a short pause in the video posts, but... much more to come in January! Cheers! 🎅✌
I walked the southern leg of the Beehive Traverse a few days ago. It would never have been on my radar had I not seen it here. Walking up into that colorful slickrock bowl was amazing!
That's great -- yes, the color patterns in that slickrock are great. I passed through midday, but would love to return for a sunrise/sunset one day. Cheers! ✌️
Wow! This was so special. You are working hard Jamal. I was a little nervous for ya’ but so impressed with your skills and perseverance. This areas are mind blowing beautiful and special. Thank your for taking us to along for the hike. Oh, and Mr. Shadow was beside you along the way! Be well! -ll
Thanks! Yeah -- this was a pretty tough stretch through Capitol Reef -- but definitely paid rewards with the great views. Thanks for watching and the comment. 🌞✌
Oh my word, that little lizard! Who says that all living creatures aren’t intelligent? Glad you made it across that talus field. Scary. Take care. Dovie
Yep -- they are truly great and as Ted mentioned best when there is no Moon. All of Utah is pretty awesome of stargazing, but Bryce and I believe Hovenweep are actually officially designated "Dark Sky" zones because the view is so great. Thanks for watching! .✨
Beautiful scenery and a good job in capturing it as best a camera can. I badly wish I could see and experience what you are seeing in person. Safe travels and I look forward to continuation of your hiking adventure to the Green River in 2023.
Thanks once more! That was a lovely video. So much to see. It seems that there is a different landform round every corner. I liked the slideshows of still images interspersed with the video - they give time to appreciate the amazing views and intriguing sights, and also give a more natural perspective. Fantastic walk, amazing location and great videos!
Thanks so much -- I appreciate that. I feel that often the stills capture the "beauty" better than my video camera whereas the video captures the "story" better -- thus I strive to find that perfect mix. Thanks again for watching and the comment! 🎅✌
I marvel at the gorgeous, foreign landscape you are traversing. Your shots and edits are always interesting as well. I am enjoying the journey, Friend!
Thanks! I do it all for the audience! OK... not really, I love it -- even though this portion was really tedious. Thanks for watching and the compliment. 🌞✌
another great couple of episodes, this traverse is no joke wow! all kinds of unreal route finding and tricky climbing, amazing stuff thanks for sharing
Thanks! And yeah -- I had some reservations about calling it by name as I didn't want to draw too much attention to the route especially for casual hikers. BUT... hopefully I make it pretty clear that nobody should nonchalantly set out on this route! Thanks again for watching and the comment. ✌
This was a treat to watch, Jamal! I haven’t been able to watch someone else’s perspective of the beehive since Will and I did the route. Great memories made. The camp above the buttcrack, that’s a notable spot!
Thanks! I'd hoped to get into "Blowsand Canyon" to camp as many seem to camp there, but in hindsight I'm glad I camped at the top where I did as it was a very cool/unique spot (and really didn't have the energy for the next climb/descent anyway!) Your videos and Wasatch Will's were great -- I give you guys a shout-out about them after I finish the traverse (ie a few episodes from now.) 🌞✌
Yeah... I had to warn my mom that this was another episode she would not enjoy! BUT... as I tell her, I am actually always quite cautious and especially in areas when the consequences for a mistake are BIG. Thanks again for watching and Happy Holidays! 🎅✌
14:37 - There's a little chute or pass right above your head. If I remember right, I think that's they way I used to enter the canyon above that big dry-fall when I scouted it out on a day-hike the first time before descending all that again with Devin. I think it significantly reduced the exposure getting over the ledge there making the loose scree and boulders on that slide adjacent to the dry-fall the most sketchy part of that whole section. Love that canyon! Then again, I enjoyed just about all of them on that route.
Thanks -- that's interesting, that chute goes up quite a ways I never imagined it would connect. I was OK with the exposure on the "middle" ledge as it looked MUCH worse from afar than up close. The loose scree was no fun, but I was thankful to be going up as I imagine going down is worse there. Cheers! ✌
@@Acrossutah You're right, that chute goes all the way up to the rim, but again, if I remember right, you could fork off it to the left just a bit above the ledge you must have taken. Looks like the ledge you took stayed pretty even with the canyon bottom or top of the pour-off there whereas for me, because of my anxieties over exposure, I opted for the higher route that ascends up a bit more and then drops down through a few small boulders and such to rejoin the bottom of that canyon.
Thanks! Yeah... I still try to feature him on occasion even if I'm not chatting with him. He has a good agent so if I don't include him enough he could opt out of future hikes with me and nobody wants that. 😉✌
Yeah, I'm glad I was going up for that section as I find it a bit easier that way. I don't really have a fear of heights as long as I feel that the footing is solid. Thanks again for watching and the comment. ✌
There's no debate that parts of the route are amazing, but I have mixed feeling about the route as a whole. I'll share more on that over the next few episodes. Thanks again for watching and the comment. ✌
Oh my, the water pocket canyon & the high ridge. Then getting through the very tight crack with your big heavy pack was scary & stressful. Nice sharing your water with the lizard. I liked seeing the grinding stones, petroglyphs & beautiful photography. Merry Christmas Jamal.
Yes, it was a good stretch with a lot of variety -- though not for those afraid of big drops! Thanks for watching and the comment. Merry Christmas to you and everyone back there. 🎅✌❄
Yep -- it was a fairly tough day. Actually, most of my trek through Capitol Reef was pretty taxing really (but still pretty amazing!) Thx again for watching. ✌
Thanks and... I know right?! Just kidding (kinda). I realize that I'm a niche of a niche. Also only doing "seasonal" videos doesn't help with the UA-cam algorithm. Interesting fact: my 4 most DISLIKED videos are all in my Top 5 in terms of views! It can be a weird game, but for now I'm happy doing what I do the way I do it. 😉✌ As always... thanks for watching!
You took the hard way. I would of traveled down the Capitol Gorge past the Pioneer Registry, then to Cassidy;s Arch and right through the Grand Wash to highway 24. I have to admit your way is more off the beaten path. I bet the hiker you met walked in from the trailhead of Capitol Gorge. Butt Crack reminds me of Big Horn Slot in Escalante, off Hole in the Rock Road. We had to "walk the wall" to get through too.
Yeah, my route through all of Capitol Reef is FAR from the most efficient. I talk about it a bit in a later video, but... even though parts were really amazing, I'm not sure if all the round-about-ness and scrambling was worth it. Thanks again for watching and sharing your experience. ✌
I'm back! No new videos yet, but... soon. From here on out the M-W-F roll-out should continue uninterrupted until the series is over (knock on wood.) Thanks for watching! 🌞✌
Thanks Jim, and Merry Christmas to you and yours and well. 🎅.I posted an announcement, but I'm on the road again so the videos will be paused until NEXT YEAR! OK,... guess that's not that far away as I'll be back next week. 😉
What was that fence in the creek for? That was one huge piece of crystal and some cool looking rocks on the beehive traverse. That Water Pocket Canyon Rim reminds me of hiking up to Navajo Knob. Well... at least the "Buttcrack" was dry and not wet 🤣 Merry Christmas Jamal
The fence was the hanging fence at the NPS boundary -- I actually left Capitol Reef momentarily to access the next canyon north. Purpose of the fence is to keep cattle from getting up canyon into the park. Aw... the wet buttcrack jokes I could have made! 😉 Merry Christmas to you as well! I made an announcement, but the videos will resume in 2023! Until then... Cheers! 🎅✌
It is a great area with colorful slick -- but as far as I know it doesn't have and official name. It's one canyon/drainage north of Pleasant Creek in Capitol Reef. Cheers! 🌞
I "cowboy camp" on occasion, but I tend to prefer being inside the tent for a few reasons. 1) to keep bugs off me (though my old tent barely keeps them out anymore!) 2) to be a bit warmer. This spring was actually quite cool and my bag is fairly lightweight, thus the tent/fly helps keep my body heat trapped inside. Thanks for watching and the question. ✌
Yep -- in fact I carry 1 liter in my main bag which I rarely ever tap as it's my "just in case" ration! That's basically 2 extra pounds for no reason -- except for that insurance (at times I do drink it if I know for 100% that water is close ahead.) Cheers! ✌

Yep -- that lizard had no fear of me at all, just wanted the water. Thanks again for watching and the comment. ✌
The stars at night must be spectacular.
You probably know this already but if you can, try to be there before or during the new Moon phase. It's amazing
Yep -- they are truly great and as Ted mentioned best when there is no Moon. All of Utah is pretty awesome of stargazing, but Bryce and I believe Hovenweep are actually officially designated "Dark Sky" zones because the view is so great. Thanks for watching! .✨

Thanks! That was a very cool "vibe" moment where I just happened to be in the right place at the right time. Thanks for watching and the comment. 🌞✌
Really enjoying daily trip reports! What a gift. Thanks so much! Happy holidays
Glad to hear it! Thanks for watching and Happy Holidays to you as well. ✌

Thanks so much, Jennifer! Hope you had happy holidays and cheers to the new year! 🌞🎉🍻
Wow some exquisite country but you put lotsa effort to navigate. You are appreciated 😁

It´s so great that you share your water with a lizard ❤ Merry christmas.
He acted like he hadn't a drink in a looong time! Thanks for watching and Merry Christmas to you as well! 🎅✌
Trackless wilds and thirsty lizard. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching! 😀✌
You really scare me at times Jamal!! So relieved you got up safely 😅
As always, your shared journeys are appreciated. 😊

The “Bee Hive Traverse” great route. Another good one Jamal!

We wish you a Merry Christmas 🎅 and thanks for the Videos
Thank you! And... Merry Christmas to you and yours as well. 🎅❄✨
Only on Jamal's channel will you get to see a Twilight Wedge over Buttcrack Canyon!
Haha -- I wish I would have thought of that at the time and I would have made a "wedgie" joke of some sort. 😉 Thanks for watching and the comment. ✌

I was in that small cave just 5 days after you were!
That's awesome! I was anxious to get going in the morning and I almost didn't check it out -- but afterwards I was glad I did. Thanks for watching! 🌞

5:50 looks great. Where is it?
It is a great area with colorful slick -- but as far as I know it doesn't have and official name. It's one canyon/drainage north of Pleasant Creek in Capitol Reef. Cheers! 🌞
Great site for the night at the top, tho you put up your tent, any particular reason for that or just habit?
I "cowboy camp" on occasion, but I tend to prefer being inside the tent for a few reasons. 1) to keep bugs off me (though my old tent barely keeps them out anymore!) 2) to be a bit warmer. This spring was actually quite cool and my bag is fairly lightweight, thus the tent/fly helps keep my body heat trapped inside.
Thanks for watching and the question. ✌
Water is heavy. Do you tend to error on the side of taking too much?
Yep -- in fact I carry 1 liter in my main bag which I rarely ever tap as it's my "just in case" ration! That's basically 2 extra pounds for no reason -- except for that insurance (at times I do drink it if I know for 100% that water is close ahead.) Cheers! ✌
19:30......that's what she said...........
also 21:20............that's what she said.
Haha! That section is full of double entendres! Before looking I thought for sure you would have flagged "let's go inspect the crack". 😉✌
big crack with a pack is totally whack.
Now that's a fact, Jack!
Yep... very hard on the back! 😉 Thanks for watching and the comment. ✌
