Johnny Cash’s contribution here helped pave the way for the “American” series produced by Rick Rubin, culminating with his breathtaking cover of Nine Inch Nails “Hurt”, released prior to Cash’s death in 2003. Rick Rubin later helped restart Neil Diamond’s career with two excellent albums. Rubin previously produced several of Tom Petty’s best albums, both with and without the Heartbreakers.
1-] Stay ( Far away, So Close! ) 2-] Lemon 3-] The First Time 4-] Zooropa 5-] Some Days are Better 6-] Baby Face 7-] Daddy's Gonna Pay 8-) the Wanderer 9-] Numb 10-] Dirty Day...
First time I listened I was kind of disappointed especially after the brilliant Achtung Baby album. Then over the time to me there are still some pearls like stay. But I needed some listenings to really appreciate. At the bottom I would put babyface.
That siren at the end made putting this on a pub jukebox a big mistake. I always thought this album was an oddity put together out of touring Achtung Baby rather than a full album in its own right. Something for those who were already fans rather than a complete work.
Again, an example of U2's (Bono's) trend for religious themes in their lyrics. Bono wrote the lyrics but had Johnny Cash in mind. Zooropa is the second album in the trilogy that started with "Acthung Baby" and ended with "Pop". This album is a deep cut for new comers. You mentions it's better as an EP and that's how it started. This was a surprise album when it came out so shortly after Achtung Baby. You gotta do "Pop" to at least let U2 redeem themselves which is what most U2 fans consider one of their weakest albums (not me!). Good stuff, gonna listen to you reacting to Ok Computer (another of my favorite groups)
Johnny's voice is so amazing that he could have sang this a capella, and I would have enjoyed it more. The musical choice with the uptempo canival style percussion pounding away didn't fit imo - it got monotonously annoying after some point. Musically the rest fit okay. Just an odd musical choice imo.

I probably will at some point 😉

Terrible song.
