- With all kinds of acronyms and labels on Maxxis mountain bike tires, choosing the right tire for your bike and riding style can be challenging. Besides figuring out which model of tread you want, you also have to choose from multiple sidewall and rubber compound options. The trail, enduro and downhill tire models from Maxxis use Dual Compound, MaxxTerra and MaxxGrip rubber compounds, and each one rides different on the trail.

29x2.5 Assegai DD Maxx Grip in the front, 29X2.4 DHRII Exo+ Maxx Terra in the rear. Sometimes used a Maxx Grip in the rear in the fall and winter. Wanting to try the Dissector on the rear soon.
I live and ride typical 'trail' in the SoCal high desert and see zero wet rides and 100% of my rides are on loose over hard. I average about 150 miles per month on my Chameleon, and I have found no difference between MaxTerra and DC regarding grip, as neither can perform magic in my terrain, but I do see a major difference in tire life. So I go with the cheaper DC Rekons that last much longer than their more expensive 3C brothers do. Horses for courses as they say.
Here in ph 3/4 of the year is dry, loose, dusty and hard pack so I use maxxterra both assegai and dhr 2.

I have a DD Disector Maxxgrip on the back of my Meta TR. Traction is unbelievable.
@@ONEBADZ I tried a Maxxgrip Dissector, the traction is indeed great but not fast rolling enough due to the maxxgrip compound, at least in my experience

I remember when Maxxis came out in Motocross and no-one would touch them but a few and I loved them especially in the sand. Now ebike after injury they are great and you can tell with battery life the compounds make and rubber compounds make a big difference.

Maxxis please make a more durable Dissector casing !
Here in rainy UK I'm looking into a Dissector or Aggressor in DC or MT compound with possibly an Assegai MT upfront.
This is for occasional tarmac commute with a lot of XC/traversing trails plus DH in loamy, muddy, dusty and occasional hardpak riding conditions.
That is quite the array of types of riding, so it's going to be very difficult getting a tire setup that good for everything from commuting on paved roads all the way to muddy DH riding. You're going to have to sacrifice either grip or rolling speed on either ends of that riding style spectrum. A tire that's good at muddy DH is not the same tire that's good at either XC riding or commuting on pavement. We'd recommend you consider finding a commuter bike to ride on the paved roads, and that way you can narrow down the types of terrain you're expecting performance from, and therefore can get a better set of tires for the mountains 🗻
@@TheLostCo I'm most happy with compromising the tarmac.. it'll be good for fitness anyway. I think, so long as I don't go for the grippiest setup, I should be okay. I hope! 😂

Glad we could clear things up! Lots of stuff going on with Maxxis tires to learn about! Tan/skin wall Maxxis tires are only available in a very small amount of models, and usually only with the EXO sidewall.

Do you recommend different tires and grip amount depending on the level of rider, from a technique perspective? I'm a couple of years in and just starting to ride black trails, and definitely find myself struggling to avoid slips over roots and rocks in the wet or cornering and steep braking when it's super dusty and skiddy or wet & slick. My MTB came with Maxxis HR2's front & back, in just the dual compound.
While I know a fair amount of that will be riding skill and technique, but the tires slipping are definitely not giving me much confidence to progress my riding and try new scary stuff. So my question is, should I get gripper tires to help with traction, or will that stop me having to learn about proper technique? Is there a perfect medium for newer riders learning how to take on gnarlier stuff?
Was planning on going with the Assegai up front & DHR2 behind, for year-round riding. Originally thought I liked the sound of MaxxGrip up front for the best traction and safety (and therefore confidence), but maybe MaxxTerra in both might suit my level better?
Generally speaking, tire and compound recommendations are universal regardless of skill level.
If you are looking for more grip, I would recommend the MaxxGrip on the front. Just about everyone here at the shop has a MaxxGrip on their front tire. For the rear, it's more up to you. You will definitely get more grip out of the MaxxGrip, but most of the braking traction comes from the front. If your back ends slips on roots a lot, its a great consideration. A MaxxTerra can be more fun, since it has less grip and will roll faster. More grip doesn't hinder learning proper technique, so I wouldn't let that be a large deciding factor.

There seems to be two types of people - those who take full advantage of modern technology and upgrades on their bikes, and those who believe it's somehow cheating and bad for learning. I'm around both types of people, so recommendations and opinions get super confusing for someone new to all of this!
I haven't been able to find the Assegai in Exo+ & Maxxgrip for the front here, so thinking of going Exo+ Maxxterra. It would still have considerably more grip for confidence-building than my current HR2 dual compound, wouldn't it?

Great question! Air pressure does indeed come into play on both grip and rolling resistance. In sum, when you have less pressure, you have more grip and more rolling resistance (rolls less efficiently). You do however, have to find the balance between the two and it changes per tire, trail condition, etc.

Similar to car tyres. Just bought my first set of Bridgestone RE003 tyres. Picked them up in the shop and was stunned at how my hand stuck to it. Waaaaay different to the usual budget tyres I’d buy but figured I’d it matters on my Mtb why not buy them for my car too

Good video, very informative thanks. I’m an average rider, riding mainly fire trails. What would you suggest for my Levo? I was thinking Dissector Max terra on the back and Minnion Max grip on the front.
I actually think that combination would be very good for you. The DHF or Assegai with a Dissector is a popular tire combo around the shop, especially with MaxxTerra on the back and MaxxGrip on the front.

Interesting you ran DD on the front and EXO+ on the rear, I run the opposite. Is that specific to your style, your terrain or your inventory at the time you needed tires?
We may have misspoke, with that combo, we definitely recommend DD in the rear and EXO+ up front.
Is there that big of a difference between maxterra and maxxgrip in terms of how grippy they are? Would you notice it? Reason I’m asking, it’s insanely hard to get maxxgrip where I live. Maxxterra is in abundance
Maxxis quality control went down lately. The last 4 tires I bought had wobble issues coming from manufacturing. Very frustrating to notice after you fitted with an insert. I ordered Michelin for now on.

Quick question. My bike came stock with Maxxis Minion DHR II on the rear and DHF on the front with the EXO protection but the rubber compound is not stamped on the sidewall. What does that mean? Is that just a generic compound where any of these aftermarket tires would be an improvement? I need tires soon and don’t want to buy a worst tire/compound than what came on it stock.

So what is the grip difference between a dissector max grip and a DHR dual compound?
Does the design of the dhr give more grip or the softer compound give more grip?
Good question! First, find a tread pattern you like and then work from there. Between those exact two tires you asked about, that would be a very close comparison when it comes to which has more grip.

Do Dual Compound tires have a tougher sidewall than 3C - ie is EXO in a Dual Compound tougher than EXO in a 3C, or are the compounds in the sidewalls the same across the line?
The sidewalls themselves are the same across the board. For example, an EXO on a Dual Compound will have the same sidewall as an EXO on a 3C MaxxTerra or 3C MaxxGrip.

I have a front tire the Maxxis Forekaster in MAXSPEED compound.. you didnt mention this .. where does it come in / I love the tire it's doing a great job out front in a 29-2.6 combines with Aggressor DC 2.3 out back

@@TheLostCo OK i get it now.. but i wouldn't say the 29x2.6 is skinny. It's a great tire on my local new england rocky trails. More volume, allowing lower psi than the 2.3 tires so even with less knobby it's more grippy. I guess your experience isnt east coast/ New England though, and you may not know what people run up here. I like your channel though. Thx for reply.
I'm no expert but Is softer rubber always gripper? In deep loam or cornering I'd think a harder compound would dig in more and offer more grip and support.

They are still firm enough to dig in, maxxgrip will give you the most in any condition. But you also have to think about the tread pattern, wider spaced knobs will probably dig in the furthest in loam.
Actually you are right, take Michelin for example..they sell 2 different compounds, and they advertise the harder compound for faster riders as they say that if you are railing corners on a soft compound tyre that the knobs will fold over too easy and faster riders need to support of a stiffer compound.
@@martincantwell2557 the put very firm rubber on the inside of the knobs for support, the soft stuff it just the outer millimeter or so
This is an interesting conversation for sure. A softer rubber compound is definitely going to grip better since it's just softer and can grab onto things better. But at the end of the day, the tire casing, sidewall, rubber compound and tread pattern combined is really what makes a tire bite and grip. The rubber on soft compound tires isn't exactly like an eraser on your pencil, where you can visibly see 10% of the eraser rubber wear away when erasing a spelling error. I just don't want anyone to think that you are going to be halfway down the knobs halfway down a trail 😂 That would be hilarious though if there was a giant black streak of rubber just following you down the trail. That's the SuperDuperDuperMaxxGrip!
What is the actual durometer measurement of the 4 different compounds?
I'm sure you can find it somewhere on the dark web, but we left out the numbers since it's already difficult enough for most riders to decide between the different models. Once numbers get thrown in, people's eyes might cross! haha

Maxxis also offers 42a ruber (quite soft), how soft is this in coparison to 3C max grip, which one is softer?
I run the High Roller 42a in the winter and it's even better than the Maxx Grip and the take it of when the heavy rain stops and the ground dries out.

42a is "Super Tacky" which is basically not in production anymore.

Watched all of your videos on Maxxis tires, especially where you hyped the Assegai.
But to sum up on a best possible combination you don't have an Assegai option in the Maxxis portfolio.
Which is the best and stiffest and puncture resistant set up? The DH CASING.
Which is the grippiest and most predictable compound from side to side? The SUPERTACKY COMPOUND.
Is there any combination of the Assegai with DH CASING AND SUPERTACKY COMPOUND? NO!!!
(that's the reason why DHF on the front and DHR 2 on the back is still the choice to go or to play the DHR 2 game on front and back. You do this, because you run out of SUPERTACKY COMPOUND options)
At least for 26 and 27.5 you can still play this "best game".
Now with the upgrade to 29 wheels MAXXIS failed completely, because there is no more DH CASING - SUPERTACKY option available.
Just wanted to point out, what you summed up to make the most sense on going hard on a DH BIKE is no longer available in the MAXXIS portfolio. DH CASING WITH SUPERTACKY COMPOUND.
Never been seen on the Assegai... Not possible on 29er wheels.
The Maxxixx Minion DHF and DHR that have no logos on the tire, are they just single compounds?
If it doesnt say Maxterra or Maxxgrip it is usually dual compound. If the Maxxis Logo is white versus yellow that means it is factory installed which might mean it is single compound.

I have a Santa Cruz Tallboy CC and it came with white factory minions.
MaxxTerra on the front and unlabeled on the back.
I always thought it’s the Dual Compound on the rear, since this is a „downcountry“ bike that’s supposed to roll fast.
I can’t imagine Santa Cruz puts a single compound tire on such a expensive bike.
However I’m tempted to put Specialized Ground Controls on for the summertime, because the terrain is mostly dry and only sometimes loose.
Rolling resistance is very important to me since I do a lot of touring where I have to pedal along singletrails and there’s more climbing than descending involved.

That would be an excellent rear tire! EXO+ with CushCore would be a fine alternative to having a burly Assegai in the back.

Is the dual compound much more puncture resistant than the other three? maxx Tara, max grip, maxxspeed?
That's more determined by the tire casings.

The stock maxxis minion dhrs on my bike don’t say the rubber compound on them so what would it be?
97% chance they are Dual Compound.

Up here in the north you cannot ride Maxxis 3C compounds in the winter. The rubber freezes and cracks. I have found WTB and Vittoria tires have no such problems.
How far north? We've never seen that be a problem here in the PNW.
@@TheLostCo Finland. I first noticed the tyre cracking at around -15 C (ca. 5 F) and the coldest I rode with that tyre was just below -22 C (ca. -8 F).

Local dealer is recommending against the Maxx Grip for temps near Zero C. Says they get harder and less grippy than teh maxx terra compound which is less affected by low temps.
Anyone else have simular expeirence? I ask as this is counter intuative compared to shoe tread and or Snow tires. Thx!
Hey Chris! We run the MaxxGrip compound all year long, especially when it's snowy and there's not much grip to be had out there. I did some poking around on rubber forums, which surprisingly have a lot of active members, and it looks like the softer durometer MaxxGrip rubber should still give you more traction than the MaxxTerra compound.

Talking aftermarket only makes me doubt the Maxxis pair (dissector F / Rekon R that came with my bike (Scott Genius) as they don’t mention compound at all. Knowing they’re built to keep the cost down is OK with me unless they’re awful (they’re great in my eyes) I’ll beat them up before I switch to anything else.
Nothing wrong with that combo for a trail bike, it is a very common combo in dusty dry australian conditions 9 months of the year for general trail riding, works super nice in loose over dry hardpack conditions for less aggressive everyday trail riding but not very good in the wet slick winter months. Most people who ride more Gravity/Shuttles in my area (western australia) would throw the dissector on the rear and run a Minion or Assegai up front for the winter months.

The Dissector front and Rekon in the rear is a fast rolling setup when it comes to the tread designs, so if Scott had to goal to build a super fast rolling bike then it makes sense they went with Dual Compound front and rear. Ride the heck out of those tires until you either wear them out or you just feel like you want more grip for more aggressive riding and braking 🤘

I am currently running this exakt setup on my bike. imo the assegai is better in the wet and is the overall more predictable tire. dhr2 has insane braking grip. i would 100% recommend assegai maxxterra exo+ front and dhr2 maxxterra DD rear. ideal for everything i do tbh

I am a new rider who is 220 lbs and looking for the best cornering/control option until I progress.
I ride hard pack w a good bit of pine straw. I am going assegai in front. I have the siskui T7 w Schwalbe Hans Dampf Evo 27.5x2.60…should I maybe leave these bc I won’t feel a grip or faster rolling diff?

He is incorrect when he said the tires are the only thing contacting the trail when you ride. My body also contacts the trail on a regular basis. 😂

Why can’t Maxxis make a 2C DD?
having the 2C tyres as a base level tyre to keep costs down would make that pointless, and a DD casing probably warrants the sort of riding which should be accompanied by MaxxTerr

@@ethanrevitch Maxxterra is the tread compound, rather than the actual tyre sidewall stiffness, which would relate to EXO, EXO+, DD, DHC and if a maxxis tyre is TR (non wire) then it will automatically be EXO but nothing higher from what i've seen
