  • Spitfire & GT6 Odds and Ends: Updates / Original GT6+ Tire / VTR 2023
Small Triumph Sports Library & Archives, Episode 14 (October 2023)
Extremely busy with work and still not finished with more ambitious video projects, I decided to produce this short (but not really short) video to cover a few items of potential interest: an update on personal projects, a discovery about the spare tire that came with my 1969 Triumph GT6+, and a little bit about my trip to the car show at the 2023 VTR Nationals (2023 North American Triumph Challenge).
    The standard statements:
As always, my videos are based on some combination of research and experience.
***Please help me to ensure the accuracy of information on my channel. Please reach out when you detect errors or possible errors. I make corrections as needed in video descriptions, in comments, and in videos.
Initial notes/corrections, pedantic nonsense, and self-mockery:
I had to create this video in a window of only a few hours, so I did very little scripting. I think it came out okay, but it is a little rougher in places than I’d like (of course, I can say the same thing about videos I spent more time on…).
00:43 While reviewing the video, I realized that I’m holding the fuse box upside down in terms of how it is oriented in the Spitfire/GT6…
6:12 A pulley and damper assembly, to use the full/correct factory parts catalogue terminology.
11:54 Based on my understanding of the source, the tire (“tyre”) uses “System 2” coding with the TUFSYN-PACKER month code. This is discerned by the code on the tire ending in a number. In “System 2” codes, the first two characters (letter or number & letter) represent the year and month. See Anghel and Sauve, documented under “Works Cited” below.

21:45 I am assuming that the seat diaphragms are a Rimmer Bros. production; these have long been unavailable, with only straps offered as replacements. I do know that Rimmer Bros. has emphasized that they had the fuel-tank hose and the rear shocks for the rotoflex cars manufactured for 2023. (Regarding the hose, previously folks had to source hose of the proper size instead of grabbing an off-the-shelf item. I have heard that at one time Victoria British [prior to being sold off to Moss, obviously] supplied hose for the application that did not fit properly.) Rimmer Bros. generally follows factory part numbers; the part numbers for the items referenced in the video are: 573900=Seat Diaphragm; 144795=GT6 Mk1 & Mk2 [+] Fuel Filler Hose; and GSA280=Rear Shock Absorber-STD (ROTOFLEX). I have not fitted any of these items to my car, obviously, and in the video I’ve reported all that I know.

Your group did a great job…and I’m sure you were there, then! If I had known, I’d have looked for you. Of course, I didn’t catch/remember the name of everyone with whom I spoke. It’s funny with the Triumph/car community; often, chatting with a stranger quickly begins to feel like chatting with an old friend, even if you end up debating some upgrade or detail. It was truly a great time!
