"Mini" dampwood termite soldier vs carpenter ants (3 minors & 1 median) - Read desciption!

  • Here we have an open-air confrontation between a particularly small Asian dampwood termite soldier (produced by the molting into a presoldier of a worker - more correctly pseudergate - that was still well away from having reached its max size) and a few Camponotus ants, three minors and a median. Unfortunatly my cellphone flash overheated at the end, and so i decided to quit there (also because the median ant appeared hellbent on evasion).

    Sad yet interesting. The termite acted in self-defense, but won. The other ant came in and saw the corpses of the other ants and at first tried to flee.
    The ant helped up one of his fallen comrades, and meanwhile the termite was processing, and still frightened, so it kept biting a dead ant that was still moving.
    Once it’s sister was up, the ants went in for revenge. But they stood no chance against the termites huge mandibles.

    The median ant looks like a different species.(This may explain why it prefers to run away compared to the other ants. I also noticed that it also doesn't cooperate with the other ants.) I've never heard of any species of Carpenter ants that have a median caste.

    • @catperson7165
      @catperson7165 Місяць тому

      Well, ants are usually significantly more aggressive than termites, probably due to the fact that they see termites more as food than anything else. Ants also usually outnumber termites. Soldier and worker termites are also completely blind, (most, but not all ants can at least 1-2 inches infront of them, allowing for them to detect changes in light and movement). On the other hand, termites have soft exteriors, which make it easy for ants to bite and sting them. The actual termites meant to fight ants, the soldiers of course, only have an armored head; they are completely vulnerable from the back and you’ll often see them struggle to fight ants on their back legs or back. Either way, the soldiers only account for 5% of the nest, which makes the numbers of ants more devastating. Another reason for it being said that ants are stronger than termites is because you often only see such conflicts outside of termite mounds, which are areas where termites are at a significant DISADVANTAGE.
