The robot laughing at you at the end is supposed to indicate that there is special Knuckles-only content. If you play a save as knuckles the level design is changed and you are supposed to destroy this robot instead of Eggman. It takes place right after the end of Sonic's story. This however doesn't cannonically happen if you go for the true ending which is getting all of the super emeralds as well in the Sonic & Knuckles portion
Shadow the Hedgehog is a unique case, as while I guess it's TECHNICALLY a spinoff, it continues and wraps up story beats from SA2 and Heroes that you kinda need for 06 to make sense. So you'd want to continue in this order: Adventure, Adventure 2, Heroes, Shadow, 06, etc.
You got the not-quite-the-actual-good-ending-because-you-didn’t-get-Hyper-Sonic-but-the-game-counts-it-as-close-enough ending! If you had gotten the super emeralds, you would’ve unlocked Hyper Sonic.
To give some context about various things regarding Sonic 3, Sonic & Knuckles, and Sonic 3 AIR: - Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles were always intended to be a single game - because of time constraints and cartridge costs back in the day, the game had to be split into two halves that could be connected by plugging the Sonic 3 cartridge on top of the Sonic & Knuckles cartridge, for Sonic 3 & Knuckles! (One of said time constraints was a Sonic 3 Happy Meal deal with McDonald's, and the McDonald's bag itself had references to Sonic & Knuckles zones such as Flying Battery - speaking of which...) - There were some changes in the zone order in development - Flying Battery Zone was supposed to take place between Carnival Night Zone and Ice Cap Zone! In fact, the end of Flying Battery Zone would have had you break down a door while exiting the airship... only to use that same door as a snowboard in Ice Cap! - Not only were there changes in zone order, but the music was changed as well! Carnival Night, Ice Cap, and Launch Base (as well as the Act 1 boss theme, Knuckles' theme, credits theme, and the 2-player menu theme) had completely different music in prototype builds compared to the final game, which AIR includes as toggles per-track! Origins also uses the Zone tracks, though (in vanilla Origins) they are recordings of considerably lesser quality than the versions in AIR. (Personally, I prefer the prototype tracks to the final game's tracks, they fit the zones better to me.) These changes were because the final game's tracks in those slots were created by a sound team put together by the legendary Michael Jackson himself! - More music changes came due to the split between Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles, where the second half was given its own main melody for the title screen music, the extra life jingle, the invincibility song, and the end of the credits medley, with S&K also including a new Knuckles theme compared to both the prototype version and Sonic 3's! - The first half of Sonic 3 only had one Bonus Stage for checkpoints (the Gumball Machine one), while Sonic & Knuckles added the other two, for a total of 3 in Sonic 3 & Knuckles. These Bonus Stages appear based on your ring count, with 20-34 Rings giving you the Slot Machine, 35-49 Rings giving you the Glowing Spheres, 50-64 Rings giving you the Gumball Machine, and the cycle repeating every 15 Rings! In addition, the sparkles above the checkpoint will be a different color based on the Bonus Stage you receive, so if you memorize the color of the sparkles, you won't need to go to a Bonus Stage you don't like! (There's also a fun bug where, in Sonic 3 alone, if you use a level select code and enter the Gumball Machine bonus stage, it'll respawn you in the Bonus Stage, but with it named Doilus Stage instead.) - Sonic & Knuckles gained 7 new Special Stages in the split into two games, and Sonic 3 & Knuckles, when combined, had to do SOMETHING with the extra Special Stages... so, they created the Super Emeralds, an upgrade to the Chaos Emeralds that you can access once you get all 7 Emeralds and enter the Sonic & Knuckles portion of the game (though if you don't have all 7 Emeralds, the first Special Stage ring will show you the shrine with the Super Emeralds, but not give you a chance to collect any). By collecting all 7 Super Emeralds, you unlock Hyper Sonic, with a multi-color glow compared to Super Sonic's yellow, AND a screen-clearing dash as an ability by double-tapping jump! - Speaking of double-tapping jump, Sonic has an innate ability for double-tapping jump, being the Double Spin Attack in Japan, and the Insta-Shield in the US. It was called the Double Spin Attack in Japan since it can increase Sonic's hitbox to be bigger and attack in more ways, while it was called the Insta-Shield in the US because it could ALSO deflect projectiles, and gives Sonic a brief moment of invincibility during the animation. - Sonic 3 AIR has achievements built into the game - for instance, "Is there an exit up there" for reaching the top of the Glowing Spheres stage or "Longplay" for clearing a save file. These achievements can in turn unlock secrets, such as Sonic's Drop Dash ability from Sonic Mania (and technically the November 1993 Sonic 3 prototype), the Super Peel-Out from Sonic CD, Knuckles and Tails as a playable option, the Sonic & Knuckles title screen, and more! - Most Classic Sonic bosses take eight hits to defeat, with Sonic 3 & Knuckles' Act 1 bosses taking 6 - exceptions include the Death Egg Robot from Sonic 2 (requiring 12), the bosses in Sonic CD (requiring 3-4, with the exception of the conveyor belt boss requiring no hits), the Egg Inferno (the boss from Lava Reef Zone Act 2, requiring 14 hits in its original incarnation before being set to 8 by default in AIR), and Red Eye (the boss from Death Egg Zone Act 1, requiring 16 hits in total - 8 for the first phase and 8 for the second).
Forgot to mention this in my last comment, but here’s the run down Mech Sonic Prototype, AKA Silver Sonic. First appeared in Sonic 2 game gear Mecha Sonic MRK 1, mostly known as Mecha Sonic. First appears in Sonic 2 Sega Genesis Mecha Sonic MRK 2, also known as Mecha Sonic also, but known as Metallix from Mario Bros Z, a fan film. First appears in Sonic 3&K All of these robots were made after Metal Sonic, Eggman still experimenting in ways to make Metal better is my theory on why they were made, but no one really knows why Eggman made them, maybe to replace Metal, which at the time was stuck in Little Planet because of the events from CD
Knuckles' hair is a nod to the rastafarian style, dreads-like, as well as his colors (red, yellow, green). In fact, one of the proto-names for Knuckles was "Dreds".
I figured I’d mention sonic origins it was a rerelease of 1 2 3 and CD in a collection with wide screen support, removed the live system, and added animated cutscenes to the beginning and ending of all 3 games for extra context to the story with a few other additions like the game gear games. The fan remasters do add a lot more to the games compared to what Sega did in their remasters most fans would say the fan remasters are better but given time sonic origins will be modded to the level that the fan remasters are at, if you could maybe react to the cutscenes in origins that would be cool but I’ll leave that up to you.
@@Sleengo The neutral ending is worse then the good. Also now that you beat the game you can go back to angel island act 1 and get all the emeralds (The big rings respawn). I swear the reward is great!
That's technically the true ending since Eggrobo at the end (that's what Eggman looking robots are called) meant to tease Knuckles' campaign where Eggrobo replaces Eggman. Mighty good playthrough I might say. For Sonic Adventure, I'd recommend either playing the original Dreamcast version on emulator or the pc version but with Dreamcast Conversion and BetterSADX mods. The first one returns the game to its original look and restores a lot of cut content and BetterSADX improves graphics, sound quality and a few other miscellaneous things. The reason why I recommend it is because DX version completely changed the look and feel of the game, removed a lot of stuff including lightning for some reason and also filled with glitches that were not in the original version. So beware. As for spinoffs, I'd recommend to try out Sonic 3D Blast Director's Cut since it's a massive hack that heavily improves the Genesis version of the game and was developed by the actual director of a team that developed 3D Blast. You could also check out Sonic Triple Trouble 16-bit. Yes, it's a fan-game but it's very high quality and serves to remake one of the best Sonic 8-bit games while also staying true to the source materials. Sonic Chaos could also take your attention. It's pretty easy and nice to breeze through 8-bit platformer. For now, that's it. Waiting for your next Sonic videos, they are pretty fun!
Sonic 3 & Knuckles story explained shot version: After sonic 2, eggman went to angel island to track the emeralds down, he found the master emerald and knuckles protecting it. He tricked knuckles into thinking sonic was evil, so he could get the master emerald to himself, knuckles sees that he tricked him and he works with sonic to defeat eggman
Missing a couple important details. Angel Island floats in the sky with the Master Emerald. The Death Egg crashed on Angel Island after Sonic 2. Eggman didn't choose to go there. Eggman was also siphoning some power from the Master Emerald to re-launch the Death Egg before outright stealing it later, causing Angel Island to fall. The waves caused by this are what alerted Sonic and Tails to investigate. And finally, Sonic had the Chaos Emeralds from Sonic 2, but Knuckles took em.
@@TTG-37 Yeah, I get it. But what you said about Eggman going to Angel Island to track the emeralds down was wrong. He crash landed there on accident. Other than that though, I see your point, and it was a suitable summary.
I hope once you've finished a bunch of the other games and have some free time, you'll consider revisiting this one and play through the Knuckles story. It's different enough to warrant it, and is generally considered to be a bit more challenging. Tails is also fun, but might be considered the "easy" mode of the game, and it's mostly the same as Sonic's. I don't know if this was an AIR change, but I didn't know you could do Doomsday Zone with only one set of Emeralds. IIRC if you fail to get them all in the Sonic 3 half, the normal gold rings will still appear in the & Knuckles half until you do, at which point I think it switches to the rainbow Hidden Palace ones. If you obtain Super Sonic before Mushroom Hill, then there's actually enough hidden rings to reach Hyper Sonic before the end of the first zone (if you're skilled enough). The 2nd half has less full zones, and with this less big ring opportunities late in the game, so they probably did this to make sure the player has a chance to get Super/Hyper in that half. The lives system is a hold over from arcades, and you're right that it's outdated. I will say that as kids we basically just had to "git gud" in order to see the end of the game, and mastering the game well enough rewarded us with seeing how the game ends. It is low key bizarre to see someone reacting to a more modernised take on my childhood, lol. I feel like I treat it as a given that everyone has played these classic games.
You probably don’t wanna do this but Knuckles has his own play through that has its own unique boss at the end. I recommend that you go to level select and just choose knuckles final boss from there. Its a 6 minute fight at most. But i understand if you don’t wanna do that lol.
Well done! You did get the good ending, and Knuckles has his own story, but I don't think that's too necessary. Also nice growth on the channel! I noticed that you mention Frontiers being the most recent game as of the time of recording, but that would be Superstars. I know that's a long time away, but it's worth keeping in mind as the list of main titles goes.
I love this game, and honestly, I was impressed by how well you played. You even found some areas in the levels that I didn’t know about! I was expecting a lot more rage, especially in the sandopolis and death egg zones, but you made it through the hardest parts of the game. And all without super/hyper sonic cheese, too. Since you’re a long time Mario fan, do you have a recommendation on the best way to play the original classic Mario games (1-3 and world)? I’ve only played Super Mario Bros 2 and 3 a little bit at other people’s houses, but I’ve never beaten them. I figure it’s time to change that.
I highly recommend you play Sonic Triple Trouble 16-bit. It's a fan recreation of the original 8-bit Triple Toruble. It introduces Fang the Sniper, who is relevant for Sonic Superstars, which is currently the latest Sonic release. It's part of the mainline games and takes place after Sonic Mania Encore mode. Knuckles' Chaotix is… technically relevant for the Chaotix's introduction? But it's kind of a horrible game all things considered, and Sonic Heroes introduces them better.
