TIPS on using plumbers putty to seal kitchen sink basket

  • If your sink is leaking, look under the sink to see if water is leaking from the drain itself or from the pipes below. If the sink drain gasket is old and crumbly, you might only need to replace it with new plumbers putty. Plumbers putty feels like playdough and can be shaped to conform to your sink drain. Try to keep the putty from getting on the threads - important in case you ever need to work on it later.

    The video shows the amateur 'plumber' did not put enough putty around the fixture. There needs to be at least twice the amount shown and even more is okay. You can hear the metal to metal contact while he's sliding it around to center it. Don't skimp! Any excess will be squeezed out and can be returned to the putty container when all is tightened up.

      @Sweet68Camaro Рік тому

      Seriously!!! What was all that talk about not tightening so much because you don’t want metal to metal. LOL. Then when it’s “snug” it’s sliding around and you can hear the scraping. WOW

    Very helpful. Pliers on the top side to tighten the assembly is a good tip!

    Don't use flex pipe. A) It's not listed for this application; B) It's going to trap debris which will smell bad and eventually clog.

    Thanks for the info. Soft plumbers putty. Sounds like a pretty good idea. A couple of things I learned the hard way recently when I did some mods to my kitchen sink. The plumbers putty should be soft and smooth. I tried using the hard stuff (totally forgetting how soft it used to be) and it didn't go that well even though I rolled it around in my hand for a while. I redid the drain a month later and popped the putty into the toaster oven to help it along. It helped a lot. A couple of things that I noticed when using hard plumbers putty. The first is the drain basket will not set into the sink far enough and it's really hard to close the gap between the sink basket and the sink. And the second is it will continue to compress over time and will continue to squeeze out plumbers putty weeks later. After it squeezes out a bit of putty it looses the compression that keeps it sealing on the sink (this is also due to the rubber sealing washer that often comes with the basket). Which is why I was surprised that you recommended avoiding metal to metal contact. My impression is you want metal to metal contact so that the two parts don't continue to pull together with the force of the nut and rubber washer. The shape of the 2 metal pieces coming together is not that close so there is a load of putty all the way up towards the threads. If you're in doubt pull it apart and check it. Great thing about plumbers putty is it is totally reusable and comes apart easily.

      @beyondwhatisknown Рік тому

      100% agree. Metal to metal contact is mandatory to keep the dishwater from dissolving the putty. There is enough space towards the threads for the putty to go and make continuous contact to the top and the bottom parts to stay sealed.

      Just curious, I noticed you put the rubber gasket and the metal nut on, but didn't put the cardboard piece between the two. I put it on mine for extra seal and so the other two pieces wouldn't crack or break upon screwing. Plus the cardboard piece was sold in my replacement kit, so I thought it necessary to use.

    I stopped using messy plumbers putty long ago the stuff would only last couple years or less then start leaking, the best thing to use & will never have problems leaking again is GE CLEAR SILICONE its the best been using it for years now & hasnt leaked yet.

      To each his own, I have better luck with the putty. No sticky mess, silicone has to dry, and a pain if you have to work on it again.

    Thank you for this video although I see you made it 4 yrs ago, but it was helpful. Is there something I can put in the sink around collar of the strainer basket without having to take the whole thing apart. I will be putting new countertops/sink/faucet in ~4months. But in the meantime, can I drizzle smthing along the rim in sink? I keep thinking that may be crazy. Glue would do it just temporarily lol.

    Do you need to use pvc cement or plumbers tape to seal where these connections screw into each other?

    • @rileyroman2417
      @rileyroman2417 3 роки тому +2

      NO. All these connections should be able to be unscrewed and taken apart again. The rubber/plastic gaskets and plumber’s putty against the sink basin create the seal, so no need for tape or pipe dope.

    Should the plumbers putty be seen in the sink around the drain. And, if so, if it starts to fall apart and end up metal to metal, (sink to drain) is that ok?

    • @obedirect5491
      @obedirect5491 Рік тому +1

      no it isn't. remove and reseat it. Metal to metal leave minute spaces for crumbs. Overtime you have a more major issue.

    DIY'ers need to see the finished bead of plumbers putty. Also, always attach the drain spout first. It is much easier to connect the drain pipe at the clean out trap. Sorry kid, but I do appreciate your effort.

    • @livefree6878
      @livefree6878  4 роки тому +1

      I don’t mean to be disrespectful, but I don’t understand what do you mean by the finished bead of plumbers putty. Do you mean don’t allow the plumbers putty to come out of the seam when you tighten it down. I appreciate the comment, there’s never a day that goes by that I don’t learn something new.

    • @iamme294
      @iamme294 4 роки тому

      @@livefree6878 let the camera see how you mold the putty to the drain. How you work it evenly around the threads and out to the lip of the edge. A little bit of putty oozing out isn't a problem, that can be cleaned later.
      Keep learning that way. My goal is to learn something new everyday. Peace, and again, thanks for the effort, I really do appreciate it.
