I used Coconut oil (refined), as it has a smoke point of 450 F. It's cheap and easy to find. Avocado oil has the highest smoke point that I am aware of at 570 F, but I have no experience with it so I don't know how it affects taste. Ghee (clarified butter) with a smoke point of 485 F is also an excellent option. The smoke point of Lard is only 370 F, too low for my liking.

Hey y'all, Great job on the seasoning the explanation the demonstration and the video were all real good. I use Crisco or bacon grease because I do not have lard available. Now I use the oven in the wintertime 425°-450° F. In the summer when it is hot I use the outdoor grill at 500° F. So we are not making the kitchen so hot.
To keep food from sticking. Warm the pan on the stove get it hot but not burning or scorching, if you wet your fingers and fling the water in the pan from far enough away to not get splattered the should be some popping. If it is quiet it is not ready. Once you get the popping then add the oil you want to cook with and let it warm also this creates a layer between the pan and the food. You are ready to cook now. You should get a good result if not start over and practice with eggs they are a cheap practice item.
Now if you have any of the old stainless steel you can rub the crisco onto the pan right before using the pan and do the same thing you will not get food stuck there either but it takes practice if it sticks after you take it out get the pan hot add enough water to cover the bottom put on the lid and let it go a minute or two then try to scrape away the stuck particles with spatula of wooden spoon. Rinse wipe repeat until you are good. All skills take time so don't worry keep at it when no one is around. Great video y'all thank you I can tell you are already loving the new pieces.

Thank you for the info on not keeping the lids on due to moisture. I have watched many videos on how to care for your cast iron and your the first to mention that. I plan to buy a cast iron dutch oven, hopefully soon when funds are better and will remember that. I will also try your method with the tallow as mine do get sticky using oils. So happy I found your channel not too long ago and Subscribed 😊

Great straight forward video. Yes, I believe that is super simple. I use avacado oil that I cook with. I know you mentioned vegetable oil in general but was wondering about this kind. It has a very high smoke point and is why I like to use it to fry/bake with to get the benefits of the avacodo oil.

Thank you so much for this ❤️ I grew up with them-that’s what our parents used cooking and last year a resident got me one for xmas for my family and I’ve been so intimidated lol. I did some of what you have done but thanks for teaching the exactly way to care for. My husband loves using it and I hate that haha cause I’m scared to clean it always- I dnt want it to rust 🤪

How do you store your cast iron? Not with the lids on but do you nestle them together with toweling between? My G’ma did this. I have her skillets and Dutch oven.

I've read that flaxseed oil is really good for seasoning cast irons, but every time I've tried to use it, it turned out super sticky. My go-to oil is avocado oil. We use it after washing and thoroughly drying our cast irons, and when I re-season throughout the year. (And before anyone comes at me, I have food allergies, including to every animal under the sun except for seafood. So when my husband cooks his bacon, I have to wash the cast irons to prevent cross contamination in my salmon. 😅)

The skillet has entirely too much oil in it. 100% the inside is sticky,

    • @WhisperingWillowFarm
      @WhisperingWillowFarm  10 місяців тому

Definitely wasn’t sticky. I used it the same day and worked great

  • @keithhe100

That view of bottom of skillet looked terrible. Dry in middle and too thick in other areas. Thin means wipe it on and wipe every bit of excess before going in oven. You didn’t do that. This is not how to season cast iron.

    • @WhisperingWillowFarm

Funny, because it’s worked just fine for the last fifteen years.

I found a number of cast iron pieces in an old harn, after buying my farm. They were pretty gnarly, but a friend used really fine grit, and blasted them clean, so I could season them. I used avocado oil, and did them in my oven. I would use them more often, but my husband has a really bad habit of putting ALL dirtied dishes in a sink full of cold water, to 'soak' them. Even when they dont need anything of the sort. He destroys a lot of my cooking dishes, so I just dont get my cast iron out. Sad, as theyre beautiful, IMHO.

My method: First buy Lodge cast iron, then start using it. Done. From the days before Lodge pre-seasoned: First buy Lodge cast iron, cover it with a *thin* layer of oil (the "best" oil being the one you've got), apply heat to the oil's smoke point (over, stove top, grill, open fire), let cool, then start using it.

I don't have rendered pork fat so what else is acceptable. I am trying to avoid any type of standard oils at all costs !!! I have a cast iron dutch oven that is over 40 years old and it needs reseasoning badly . . . THANK YOU.

Do you have bacon? Bacon grease can be used.
