    You are seeing the quintessential execution of "Anticipating Separation" by SFO's local tower controller. He anticipates that when he issues clearance the separation will be there between the two aircraft when it should. In this case, when the nose of the arriving aircraft crosses landing threshold, there cannot be any other plane at any point on his runway. I believe when I paused the video at 6:25, you can see the approach end of 28R. There is a single arrow pointing up the runway, then 4 arrow heads and then the left to right horizontal line. That line is the "Landing Threshold", the rule for runway separation starts at that line. Although the line is displaced from the start of the paving, the line is the start of the runway. When the nose of the arrival crosses it, the runway must be clear. And when his nose crosses it, the crossing departure has cleared within milliseconds! I have sat in San Fran Tower on a couple of occasions and it seemed at one point they were firing traffic from 01 L and 01 R while landing on 28 L and 28 R at a peak time and something was going though that intersection multiple times a minute and all met the above rule. They do this day in and day out. The arrival traffic speed is very consistent. The local controller has a radar scope for reference of final approach and knows the exact distance of the arrival. They position the crossing departures on 01 L and R "into position and hold" then tell them to "spool it up" to full power without issuing take-off clearance. At the right moment, contingent on 28 traffic, they clear them for takeoff and they launch. Over and over and over. But I got to admit, this one was razor close. Also note on rollout, the controller clears another aircraft to land on 28R, again anticipating that the aircraft rolling out will be clear of the runway when the next one lands. Bravo! I have never forgotten my visits there. If you want, go to Google and lookup the FAA's Air Traffic Control 7110 handbook, it opens in a PDF and then hit control +F and you can type in "Anticipating Separation" and find multiple instances for application.

      I’m a student pilot, live in San Francisco, and listen to SFO tower all the time. They literally never tell departures on the 1s to “Spool it up.” Lmfao. The closest thing to this, but still far from it is “(Airline) ####, wind is XX@XX, cleared for takeoff, no delay, traffic is on X mile final.” Smh. Don’t ruin a comment by adding bs.

    Merci pour cette super vidéo encore ! Enfin une nouvelle vidéo de cette approche que j'apprécie tant ! J'en ai vu quelques uns des décollages sur la O1R/L avec un avion en finale sur les 28R/L mais celui là pour le coup est vraiment close ! Une habitude locale... (vidéo de pilotview sur le LH454). Après avoir voyagé sur cette ligne de nombreuses fois en 77W et 380 AF et autres, une petite vidéo fait grandement plaisir ! Dommage que tu n'aies pas eu le droit à une Golden Gate 7 ou point reyes 3 niveau STARs mais bon ça sera pour la prochaine fois comme tu le dis ! D'ici là bonne continuation !

      Most likely just duty time issues. Captain had probably flown earlier in the day, and the flight they were about to operate was delayed so if he continued, he would go over his maximum duty day or not have enough legal rest before a trip the next day.

      They had the depature in sight and decided it would be clear of the intersection when they land. A go around would be more dangerous because it brings the flight paths of the aicraft closer together.

    • @walterwlim
      @walterwlim 5 років тому

      At SFO, if it does get too close, the ATC will call for the go-around but that typically occurs further out before minimums.

    • @3138dan
      @3138dan 5 років тому

      @@hd4870x2 And that's my question, they had the aircraft taking off in sight and clearly witnessed him cross their landing runway while they were 100 ft below minimums. What would happen if that aircraft would have rejected his takeoff for example? Guess that's normal since a go-around option wasn't brought up by none of the pilots appart from the brief notification mentioned by one of them. Seems like tower was also well aware of the situation with visual contact. So in what circumstance do you call a go-around? The published missed approach for 28R is basically runway heading and maintain 3000, while I think most of the departures out off 01R are facing east there shouldn't be any danger regarding flight paths if decided to go-around. Cheers :)

    • @hd4870x2
      @hd4870x2 5 років тому

      @@3138dan You can perform a go around after DH if there is a saftey threat. On an ILS APP DH is the height above the THR at which you have to have the RWY in sight or at least visual reference. This does not mean you have to land no matter what.
      If the depature rejects takeoff it will most likely be able to stop in front of the intersection or clear it in time. But if I think there is a potentially risk of a collision I would perform the go around even above the THR. Would be pretty messy thats for sure. ;)
      As someone pointed out above, ATC at SFO is very experienced with these kind of situations and would call a go around or instruct the depature to reject before it gets too close.

    J’ai la phobie de l’avion et je continue à regarder vos vidéos avec tellement d admiration et de peur en même temps. C’est hallucinant tout ce qu’il se passe alors que nous passagers on ne s’en douterais pas une seconde de tout ça. Trop bizarre cette sensation. D’ailleurs, est ce que vous avez une obligation de « ne rien dire » ? En tant que phobique (que personne ne rigole 😅) mais j’aimerais bien que le pilote dise « il y a des turbulences vous devez donc attachez votre ceinture mais vous inquiétez pas cela va durer que 5min » ou alors « ça va durer 1h » et là je sais que je dois prendre mon somnifère 😂. Non sans rire, il y a des règles vis à vis de ça ?

    • @calahan59
      @calahan59 5 років тому +1

      Indirectement c'est ce qu'ils font vu qu'en vol il y a l'indicateur qui s'allume avec le petit bruit caractéristique pour te dire de boucler la ceinture. Ce sont les pilotes ou les PNC qui l'activent en fonction du vol et des possibles turbulences. Air France fait des stages pour les personnes phobiques mais je crois que c'est assez onéreux. J'avais peur de l'avion plus jeune mais paradoxalement c'est justement en regardant beaucoup de documentaires sur l'aviation que désormais je ne ressens plus rien. Je pense que naturellement quand on voit une grosse masse comme un avion se déplacer dans le vide notre cerveau nous dit que ce n'est pas normal, d’où la peur mais si on comprend pourquoi et comment un avion vole, ça démystifie la chose, de mon point de vue en tout cas.

    • @lolamonde5667
      @lolamonde5667 5 років тому +1

      calahan59 merci pour ta réponse. Oui c’est exactement ce que j’ai fais, j’ai regardé beaucoup de vidéo pour comprendre le pourquoi du comment et je suis contente lorsque je suis dans un avion de comprendre par exemple, pourquoi il y a tél ou tél bruit, par exemple les sondes qui sortent au décollage étc. J’aime beaucoup me renseigner et apprendre, mais ça n’empêche que j’ai toujours très très peur. J’ai franchi le cap l’an dernier en prenant mon premier vol, cela a été difficile mais maintenant j’arrive à monter dans un avion.
      Ce que je voulais savoir, c’est lorsqu’il y a cet indicateur, on ne sait pas si les turbulences seront grosse ou non. Parfois il y a cet indicateur et au final on ne ressent rien, et parfois on les ressent énormément. Je voulais donc savoir s’il y avait des règles pour savoir pourquoi il ne le dise pas quand elles sont grosse.
      J’ai aussi une dernière question, je prend l’avion dans un mois. De ce que j’ai lu, les pilotes connaissent à l’avance s’il y aura des turbulences ou pas, est ce que je peux le demander en début de vol ou il ne peuvent pas me le dévoiler ?

      Bonjour Lola, merci pour votre message. J'ai eu des retours de personnes phobiques qui apprécient beaucoup mes vidéos, et d'autres trouvés sur internet qui leurs permettent de mieux comprendre l'aérien. C'est effectivement un premier pas vers la diminution de la phobie. Pour les turbulences, nous essayons de donner le maximum d'info, quand nous avons des indications précises de leurs durées estimées. Il n'y a pas de règles;)

    I swear as the pilot of the Air France triple 7, I would be sweating trying to decide on whether or not the plane crossing the runway when I am just about over the numbers deems it necessary to go around. That controller must have been feeling himself😂😂

    Un peu court a mon gout le TO a la perpendiculaire lors du landing.. Ca fait short en sécurité....
    Belle vidéo, j'aime bien le 'ils décollent en même temps, jamais vu ça'.. Ca annonce la couleur sur le tarmac, avec tous ces avions a la queuleuleu....

    If I was a pilot, my worst nightmare would be taxing. So confusing all those lines and intersections would blow my mind LOL

      There are ground charts available. But for regular pilots it is probably a breeze.
