I remember being excited for the future of gaming after playing games like Battlefield Bad Company and the games from that Era, and playing games online with friends and chatting and having fun. But then nothing for decades that was able to compare. Games only got smaller and smaller while somehow taking up more and more space on the hard drive.
It's also frustrating when you think about it. Despite the roughness of the gameplay ATM. This feels way more like Battlefield than the last two games. How can a small crew of people achieve this when a studio with more people and resources somehow can't. This was all people wanted, DICE. It's not that hard.

No suits telling you to push monetization, no product managers trying to optimise KPI, no marketing spin on features that don't exist, just 3 dudes making a game they believe to be what everyone wanted, and everyone wants it.
It HAS occurred to me that a PvP shooter that prioritized gameplay over photorealism when allocating budget would likely become an immediate hit. Yes, pretty visuals ARE important when marketing any game, but they do little to actually enhance a PvP experience. Art is always the most expensive part of game development, especially if you want a feature-rich game, because every feature needs its own model, animations, textures, etc. By intentionally restricting the artstyle, a dev team can greatly speed up the rate at which they implement ideas. If you want to see this concept pushed to its logical extreme, look at Dwarf Fortress. It's widely acknowledged to be the most complex video game ever conceived, because its ASCII font "graphics" make implementing new features a piece of cake.
@@Dudewitbow It's a bit of both, graphic fidelity I agree with 99% of the time, but visuals would mean also stylistic visuals, which are by itself gooood

The thing is, it should be effortless. The formula was there, but the idiots in charge can't figure it out. They just keep going further down the wring path and can't figure out why they are failing. They are taking a basic 2+2=4 formula and turning it into calculus.

Honestly, this is the time in gaming history to become a game developer because there’s so many smaller teams making games that people can actually enjoy rather than the cash grabs that big game developers have had to do. I also think the graphics totally complement the gameplay. Visibility in this game is so much better than anything else. Plus since everything is boxy I assume it the hitboxes line up really well with the actual model.
One thing BattleBit does prove is that graphics are holding developers back from time spent actually making the game play well. If you ask me, we need a reboot of the industry, with graphical fidelity taking a backseat instead of remaking older games and launching unfinished messes.
I couldn't agree more. But the sad reality is that more advanced graphics forces people to buy more expensive graphic cards with each generation of new games.. and that keeps the industry rolling
@@Chickaqee People were already saying that in the ps360 era, even now there is still a gap between consoles and high end PCs and most games aren't even on par with what can be done, RDR2 still being more beautiful than most games, so yeah there is still a big margin. This game is yet more proof that gameplay is much more important than realistic graphics (I’m not discounting them by saying this, they can definitely increase immersion and add something to games, especially story-driven ones, but for something like an fps it clearly doesn’t always matter)
I honestly prefer the simple graphics for battlefield. Battlefield games have become so graphically detailed that it's difficult to read the chaos. Being more readable is great and knowing nobody is running around with a 20 fps slide show because ooooo pretty is a good feeling too with so many players sharing a space.
Honestly, give me more shooters with the fidelity of something like Battlefield 2, Battlefront II (The real one), or at most Battlefield 3/Arma 3 and I'm happy.
My friend got me this game yesterday and we sat down and played for 6 hours straight before I realized what had happened. Here's hoping the dev team doesn't see this success and try to grow too big too fast. Hiring on a couple extra hands to maintain momentum may not be a bad call, but if they let the success go to their heads it could spell disaster.

It would be cool if the game got a Due Process level facelift. That game was hammered out looking like this, and once the game play was finished and feeling great they went back and built an interesting but still chunky and easy to run art style for it.
to be fair there are a few major reasons for that, the most important one being that when you have a team of hundreds making games in just a few years and under the name of a huge publisher beholdent to lots of share holders, passion and soul gets thrown out real quick and its all about profit margins. devs are reigned in to within an inch of their life and they are given very little freedom. because whilst call of duty and battlefield suck as games, they're great money printers. the second is actually that having more people is counter intuitively actually not a good thing. it can definitely end up being a too many cooks in the kitchen situation. rather than 3 people shooting ideas off of eachother you have now dozens possibly hundreds of people all with their own ideas and opinions of how the game should be and then a huge corporation ontop of that telling you exactly what to make to maximise profits and minimise dev time. this is why IMHO the indie game scene is SO much better than triple A. because games rarely NEED a huge budget and crazy teams... games always need the undying passion of people with great ideas and an incredible urge to spread that passion with others. something that triple A dev teams seem to be great at killing.
The first time you see 255 people together in a match is very impressive. That said, this game is already losing its shine to me and I imagine the player count will slowly begin to drop. The carnival trick of "it runs well, look at all these people" only lasts so long.

the community and it's... insanity, strongly brings me back to the good ol' TF2 days.
Screaming "MY LEGS" after getting knocked is the top gaming experience I've had in years.
You can tell this game was 4 people going, “you know what, most games aren’t good anymore, so we’ll make our own game that doesn’t suck”
It's also frustrating when you think about it. Despite the roughness of the gameplay ATM. This feels way more like Battlefield than the last two games. How can a small crew of people achieve this when a studio with more people and resources somehow can't.
This was all people wanted, DICE. It's not that hard.
@@BrokenCornholio1537 The game is just fine, people are giving it more credit because of how small the team is, if DICE came out with this exact game it would be completely lampooned and shit on until the end of time.
There's three, actually
@@xXEGPXx You're kidding yourself if you think that.
@@xXEGPXx Your just wrong. I won't deny that it being from like 4 dudes doesn't set my expectations as highly as a Triple A gaming studio (and the $15 price tag doesn't set my expectations high either tbh), but that doesn't negate how fun the game actually is. If anything, the fact that it is so much better than anything DICE has released in the last 5+ years blows my expectations out of the water. I would have gladly paid $60 for this game and still be praising it.
Graphic design will always trump graphic fidelity and this game has nailed its design.
The 7 years in development that this whole game has been in were totally worth it.
I haven't had sheer fun in a long ass time. And i mean fun as in not worried about grinding, not worried about skins or anything else that feeds on FOMO and neither trying to be overly competitive. This game is just full of sheer silly and joyful fun. Even if i lose matches i still enjoy my time with this game.
I think the best Part is the non competetive Part. Your stats arent Displayed anywere, just your Level. So no one cares about his KD or shit Like that and just has fun
I bought this game because of this video, and started playing, and I met this enemy and chased him around a building like a wild goose chase with him screaming "NO PLEASE I HAVE A FAMILY" and shit and we were both laughing and I killed him, like that is what gaming is meant to be. Just fun. It is honestly so refreshing.
It's widely acknowledged to be the most complex video game ever conceived, because its ASCII font "graphics" make implementing new features a piece of cake.
visuals are for marketing, gameplay is for longevity. The games that last the longest are the ones with the best gameplay.
@@Dudewitbow It's a bit of both, graphic fidelity I agree with 99% of the time, but visuals would mean also stylistic visuals, which are by itself gooood
dwarf fortress is just about the slowest developed game of all time. its been 20 years and there still arent basic bugfixes from launch

it's very hard to summarize BattleBit. it's just so effortlessly fun, built to last and has an insane demographic
It's sucked in people like me who have basically gone full Mil sim with the lack of games like Battlefield. Has mechanics from Squad while also being incredibly fast paced. Very very good game.
The thing is, it should be effortless. The formula was there, but the idiots in charge can't figure it out. They just keep going further down the wring path and can't figure out why they are failing. They are taking a basic 2+2=4 formula and turning it into calculus.
At first I got a bit frustrated since being a sniper with lower level guns is hard but as soon as I started playing classes like support where I run in, chuck 4 grenades and tons of c4 whilst spraying an mg I was loving it. I remember my first game and being enamoured by the chaos of it
Honestly, this is the time in gaming history to become a game developer because there’s so many smaller teams making games that people can actually enjoy rather than the cash grabs that big game developers have had to do. There should always be unlockable items for the majority of the game but to have some just as cool items for money is always nice
Easier said than done.
@@maxpro751 Yeah, maybe not for you or me because we have a combined IQ of 5, but the thing is: People like that are out there and do exist! We are honestly on the border of a new golden age after a dark age of lootboxes and greed. It's history repeating itself again.
I also think the graphics totally complement the gameplay. Visibility in this game is so much better than anything else. Plus since everything is boxy I assume it the hitboxes line up really well with the actual model.

If AAA shooters is fast food, Battlebit is the old foreign dude with the foodcart that makes just one type of food but is the best goddamn thing ever
@@GregTheGuitaristwell graphics can't improve forever, most game engines today are like 90% to photorealistic already

Most games are far from photo realism and are also disappointing graphically wise considering what is already achievable.

The first time I jumped into a helicopter, as soon as we took off, someone started playing "Welcome to the jungle" by ACDC and it reminded me of that scene in Avengers when Tony Stark hijacks the Quin jets sound system to play it on. Probably the best moment of play so far
Welcome to the Jungle is by Guns N' Roses, not AC/DC but otherwise I fully agree with you

It's honestly embarrassing that triple a company can't make a game like this with teams of hundreds and this game was made by three people.
to be fair there are a few major reasons for that, the most important one being that when you have a team of hundreds making games in just a few years and under the name of a huge publisher beholdent to lots of share holders, passion and soul gets thrown out real quick and its all about profit margins. devs are reigned in to within an inch of their life and they are given very little freedom.
because whilst call of duty and battlefield suck as games, they're great money printers.
the second is actually that having more people is counter intuitively actually not a good thing. it can definitely end up being a too many cooks in the kitchen situation. rather than 3 people shooting ideas off of eachother you have now dozens possibly hundreds of people all with their own ideas and opinions of how the game should be and then a huge corporation ontop of that telling you exactly what to make to maximise profits and minimise dev time.
this is why IMHO the indie game scene is SO much better than triple A. because games rarely NEED a huge budget and crazy teams... games always need the undying passion of people with great ideas and an incredible urge to spread that passion with others. something that triple A dev teams seem to be great at killing.
The first time you see 255 people together in a match is very impressive. That said, this game is already losing its shine to me and I imagine the player count will slowly begin to drop. The carnival trick of "it runs well, look at all these people" only lasts so long.
