  • This is The Twentieth Episode of the Visual Scholar Podcast - With Tim Mcburnie.
In this episode I discuss two important issues that can collide! Family and Productivity.
Getting your art done with busy family life is a massive challenge. Often as Artists we need to have a level of focus and dedicated time to work. And Family life can be chaotic and... lets face it... not that great for productivity of all kinds.
There are a number of pretty simple productivity concepts that I use with my own life that I have found useful when it comes to getting things done with a family of 5. And I share them all here.
Many of these are well trodden paths in the productivity game. But I have found there are differences in the way they are applied to Family life.
I still use many of the same tools to tackle a fulltime art career (and more) that I did way when I was single and had all the time in the world... But with a few critical adjustments and modifications.

Congrats on your 4 month old! It's honestly amazing that you could make time to do anything at this stage haha.
This was a really nice insight into your life as an artist and a parent! It's nice to know that I'm not alone in the struggle to find time. I think the message to think of the long game really helps. It's easy to get tunnel visioned, thinking this is how it's going to be forever. 😅
You're right on the money with your talk about work filling the time alotted. I find myself constantly asking myself what I was doing with all my time before my baby was born. 😂
Great podcast as always, keep it up!

Excellent insights, sir. Although I am not a freelancer, I do work from home every day. The goals, rhythms, and approach you put forth for living a rich family life while staying productive and focused resonate so incredibly well.
You set words to some patterns I have held off and on over time, so it is encouraging to hear confirmation. The core idea I really liked is that of staying fluid and letting go of those expectations. I needed to hear that! Thanks for putting this out there!

I'm over 40 and cannot imagine going too long without drawing. I really got into sketching/character design b/c it's one of the things I can do (and be around) while my wife/kids are doing their own stuff. Just a small sketch book, pencil, eraser: I can start at a whim, and put it away when needed at any time of day.

Thanks Tim, this was very insightful 😮 Kudos to you to manage the work life balance. I didn’t expect you to have 3 kids. And don’t worry if the output slows down a bit, I think you deliver enough and excellent videos for us.
Watching your videos motivates me more to work on my own comic again.❤

Great video and just comes right on time. We are awaiting our second child in a few months and I know already that I will have to be even more efficient with my time and also bad time wasters. Glad you figured this stuff out and putting your thoughts out there. Greets from a fellow australian-based freelance concept artist.

I have an office job and Indo not think I will do art professionally one day. It is a hobby to relax from working at a computer. ButI find myself using your advice in my dayjob too, and it is very helpful to fight procrastination.
