Which career path do you think is the best? 1-The Cog? 2 -The Owner? or 3 -The Artist's Artist?

Hey Tim! I've been following your art content silently for a long time. Bought your course on artstation ages ago. This has been one of my favorite episodes, its really refreshing to hear someone be able to understand moralistically the world around us. But not get so caught up in that we just get frustrated and throw up our hands and give up or chalk it all up to chance or nepotism or some such. Its all nuance and its great that you have been building a platform to actually speak to that nuance and not just blunt everything for simplicity. As someone trying to find a niche in the world of art and as someone repulsed by all things salesman this was one of my favorite episodes so far. Definitely not too much revolution!

That's awesome to hear! Thanks for letting me know your thoughts. You are an OG for sure if you got my course on Artstation :)
I think moving from selling courses on Artstation to my own website/teaching platform (and hence starting to play with youtube) is a good example of this stuff in action. I found Artstation to be really easy and pretty good overall (they handle all of the marketing and promotion automatically basically). But ultimately the marketplaces become commodified. And there is a large company between me and the customer. (Plus now I can make much larger proper courses).
I'm glad this was not too much! :)

The trouble with artists is they don't have good sources of solid tactical advice, and because of that, social media clowns have filled the void. I've been a marketer for over a decade, the advice given by these 'experts' would barely match the knowledge level of my interns.
Maybe in the future when the market is bigger we'll see qualified marketers come forward.
My advice to artists is learn old school selling. Most artists make less than 10% of their sales via social media yet it's all anyone talks about. Learn copywriting and apply it to your newsletters and ads, learn about event selling and pitching so get orders at your shows.
Selling is universal, you sell a bottle of water and a diamond bracelet with the same fundamental principles. Art is no different!
    Appreciate your videos Tim 👍

I agree! A lot of the things artists seem to be chasing (followers etc) seem to be based on validating ego and popularity. Not on making a living or building a brand.
I am still very early on in learning to apply marketing and copywriting... It's harder than it looks for sure. But I think it's one of those skills that will pay for itself in the end.
Thanks for your thoughts! It's good to get some confirmation from someone who has been doing marketing for a while!

No, this video was definitely not "too much." I would rather know what I am getting into rather than find out later and face the consequences. Thanks again for another eye-opening video.
