ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT - Calum being so candid without the slightest gossip and throwing anybody under the bus. When Calum decides to stay home can he not work at Red Bull HQ? I'm sure there is a HUGE amount of work there for someone at his skill level and experience ?
This is a brilliant story to hear, the start of his career is very similar to what mine is like now. I recently got made redundant from the garage I was working at, struggled to find another job because I don’t have a level 3, and now I’m going to the same college he went to at Silverstone to train to be a motorsport technician.
I worked in American LeMans and Grand Am prior to that for about 8 years. Luckily got to do Daytona 24 and LeMans quite a few times. I don’t think many fans realize the amount of crossover in the pitlane from F1 to those series. I can say though the first time you open up the garage door and walk out into pitlane at LeMans is definitely something special and something you never forget.
Not sure if he was at Hungary when Max's car got fixed on the grid, but that is the best example of a calm chaos by Redbull, Would love to know that story.
I still remember vividly how fast they worked on Max's car when he crashed the front left of his car on the way to the grid. They fixed it in the nick of time. That was so thrilling!!
I spent just over 23 years in the sport, started at Willys (testing then raceteam)… went to RB for 5 years on raceteam then finished my days off at the FIA. We the people that do this job is our choice, we spend so much time away from family, friends etc but there’s always FaceTime!! It’s hard or it can be if you make it, I’ve seen grown men in tears when we used to go away for winter testing for 7 weeks (inc car launch & sponsors videos) when they speak to there kids they burst into tears… it’s hard for them. Personally having no kids was a bonus, missed my golden retriever the most, glad I’m done it, miss the driving part to be honest which was our chill time in the trucks. I’m proud of what I’ve done & achieved no matter what people say.
Thank you so much for this great interview !! I loved it. I wish you all a happy and healthy new year and I hope that Callum stays with Redbull for a few years more.🙏🏼🙏🏼 Greetings from Linda from the Netherlands. A’m a great F1 fan , and especially a fan of Max.❤
Another really interesting Podcast. Calum's story was a great listen. Very insightful of the Pit Crew's perspective of F1. Thanks again Ben. Hope you & your family & whole crew have a great Christmas. Cheers. 👍👏
This was really interesting to hear what drives the mechanics, I had noticed Calum many times amongst Max’s mechanics, I guess he sticks out. The mechanics dont often find their way to the spot lights even though they play a mayor part in the out come.
Great questions n interview! Caleb is very insightful n has an compelling story...can't wait for his book. Mad respect for any man breaking barriers in any field of endeavor. Growing up Brown my Mom taught me I had to be twice as good as everyone else just to be accepted...so I know the struggle is real. Subscribed ❤
Great interview, Callum has the same mindset as Lewis, work hard and push yourself forward. I find it very interesting that he mentions STEM, this is what Lewis has put his efforts into getting students involved with, Mission 44. The British government needs to step up!
To be fair! Mat first came on when i was 4k Subs. Freddie at 6k after a DM. All the guys have built their channels of their own back and i appreciate the collaboration i have had with them and the trust they gave at the start. Its been great to get to know them all over the last 12 months 🎙️
I can't agree more with that statement 11:31. Professionally I'm and IT Consultant and that also applies there. I'm also a hobbyist. And a Technical University graduate. And I'm 41. And my experience shows, that as much as it is tempting to "jump over the boring stuff, and get right into the bells and whistles and the newest tech", the basics of working with little tech and doing stuff manually, gives you the best background for utilizing the newest tech to it's best, and filling in the gaps with your experience, where the tech fails to do so. Although I understand it might be hard to convince a young apprentice to use old-school methods, when there is a modern tech available. But succeeding in this will make that apprentice so much more valuable long-term. For him and for whoever he's working for.
Great interview, thanks guys for sharing. @ Calum 'Team principal' next. Keep going, but one thing about your little one, YOU can NEVER buy back the time you've spent away from them no matter how much money you have, it's tough and hard to swallow for some. That said looking forward to reading your book.
11:12 working unpaid is how they (the team) know you want to do the job and love it. I worked a full weekend with a team unpaid and got hired on directly after that weekend. Just gotta bust ya ass when the moment arises and not sit back and let it pass you by…
I always see you in tv and wondered what your story was. Proud of you brotha. It's important for us to see those that look like us and its important for the world. We have contributed to this world majorly since the dawnof civilization, and they try to hide and revise history to diminish our greatness. 🫡 From the U.S
5:57 same here in the U.S. Unless your high school has a machine shop/workshop you won’t use your hands for much but tapping on a screen… class of 2020 so maybe not the newest data recorded but yeah
@buzzin-hornet because Calum carries himself in a way that an outfit would never overpower his personality. The fact that he's tall is a plus because for some of the outfits Lewis is a bit too short to my liking.
@ I was more wondering if it was his colour of skin that had you compare him to Lewis? I’m not calling racism here, just wondered if it was a subconscious connection you had made. Him and Lewis are both black in a sport that is predominantly white.
@buzzin-hornet I will be honest and admit that the colour of his skin does make a difference because those clothes need that melanine to shine in my opinion.
When i think of a team work: max wrecks his front left on opening lap. And then rb decides to repair the car on track. Having only 12 minutes or so to repair the car. Do that and see max win.. i would be proud of me. Insane work...
11:00 We had Apprenticeship for many different types of work, like welder and electricians here in Sweden, some had 5 years others 7 years lite electricians, my dad had a electricians Apprenticeship then he was 18, very low pay, super low, but you could survive on it. After the 7 years he did become a regular electricians, and after xx years and some more education and certification test´s you could become a Master electrician. But what i know that system of paid Apprenticeship was ended in the early 1980is in Sweden, but i think we need that system to come back! and it sounds like UK needs it also. so i agree with Nicholas, not only cuz we both has the same name, Nicholas as my first name but it´s a valid point he brings up here.
awesome to hear you say that many people drop out because theyprefer being with their family . don't get me wrong. everyone has to make that choice for themselves. but for a mechanic in F1 i've always thought it's not that easy to combine that with family . and when you're time comes i would never think you let down the team . i'm just glad you've been part of the team .
59:27 "If we can broaden our reach, what you'll see is natural diversity" THIS. Exactly this. Diversity should be naturally occurring if there's enough selection and the talent. F1 as a whole is instead forcing it down our throats with all these political feeder series.
Too bad he brought up D€I, that stuff is not flying anymore (that will hurt his sales as well). Getting somewhere on merit is the only route forward, trying to ride some ideology, works counterproductive. Used to like him.
I fail to see what his skin colour has to do with him being in the pitlane. Considering the percentage of black people in the UK and how many if them choose to follow the same career path, it sounds about what you would expect. You could just as well figure out how many redheads are in the pitlane.
@ nah, fair play to you mate. You put out good content. Can’t understand why people will sit and watch for an hour but not give you the courtesy to at least tap the thumbs up button.
Sorry Callum but DEI has no place in any STEM field. You said it yourself that you worked hard to get it. We want the best people for the job period. You are an inspiration to people and that is great but dont buy into that waste of time. That inspiration should be for the inspired to work harder. I tell young mechanics all the time. if a man can build it, you can fix it.
A product of social media, he wrote a book thinking he could get fired? I call BS, even if true, how would his team still trust him? Mentioned his first F1 race and didn’t even mention the race, atmosphere, the emotions, just doesn’t feel genuine. Marc Priestley book is how it’s done.
Wow, such an opinion based on an edited interview. The difference between Marc Priestly and Calum is that Mark Priestly is all about Mark Priestly and Calum is about getting people to find a career and how to do it.
I have had a lot of Male guests which i think has obviously resulted in a larger male audience! I have some great Women booked in for next year and would love more of a balance! But it has been a struggle to get the influential women in the space to agree to come on… But starting 2025 with an amazing young woman in January! 👊

Hell yeah man! 🤘🤘 good luck brother! Is your goal to be doing what Callum is doing now?
Good for you man.....
Keep up the hard work man. Good luck.
Calum is such a level headed intelligent person. He represents the ordinary guy in a glamour sport. Can’t wait to read the book.
This guy was always an enigma on the screen. Thanks so much for interviewing him. Such great insights and an extremely driven professional.
Oh HELL YEAH always wanted to hear this guys background
I now understand why he and Max do get along so well.
Both so honest and open...
Telling how it is.
Next step for Drive To Survive is to do a spin off with the pit crews. I think that would be fun to watch.
52:00 funny to hear that merc started it, not surprised.
Absolutely loved the podcast. Great to see fellow engineers talk about their profession.
Another amazing interview Ben, what an awesome guest Calum is!
I worked in American LeMans and Grand Am prior to that for about 8 years. Luckily got to do Daytona 24 and LeMans quite a few times. Callum, what a legend!!
Love these types of guests. Always nice to see the support people get some recognition for all the hours they put in
Good to finally put a name to the face! Can't wait to read the book Calum ^-^
Hope you like it!
I still remember vividly how fast they worked on Max's car when he crashed the front left of his car on the way to the grid. They fixed it in the nick of time. That was so thrilling!!
Wonderful interview! Callum is a fantastic rolemodel!

One of the best podcasts yet. A great guy, and a proper insight into F1 👍
Fantastic choice for a post F1 season guest. Calum is a class act and to hear his story is so inspiring. Thank you.
Thank you so much for this great interview !! I loved it.
I wish you all a happy and healthy new year and I hope that Callum stays with Redbull for a few years more.🙏🏼🙏🏼
Greetings from Linda from the Netherlands.
A’m a great F1 fan , and especially a fan of Max.❤
F1 isn’t a job or a career it’s a lifestyle and a major commitment
Another really interesting Podcast. Calum's story was a great listen. Very insightful of the Pit Crew's perspective of F1. Thanks again Ben. Hope you & your family & whole crew have a great Christmas. Cheers. 👍👏
A nice inside view of a F1 mechanic. He is very honest
Great conversation with an absolute hero! Merry Christmas to all
15:40 …Le Mans is my goal and hearing you talk about it like that almost puts a tear in my eye.
Great to see an interview with Calum!!! He is always so passionate and looks to have a great relationship with Max!! All the best to Calum!!!
What a great story, and seems like a lovely guy too. A credit to Red Bull and F1.
Love Calum, Absolute class act!!!! Merry Christmas everyone!!!
Brilliant interview!
best interview in a podcast EVER! and I haven't started to listen to it as I write the comment! but just having the idea to interview him is GENIUS!
What a genuine bloke. Great interview.
Even more happy with the AD21 outcome knowing how petty merc got. 😊
This was really interesting to hear what drives the mechanics, I had noticed Calum many times amongst Max’s mechanics, I guess he sticks out. The mechanics dont often find their way to the spot lights even though they play a mayor part in the out come.

Great interview, loved it and watched every minute of it! Thank you! And Calum's book is one I am definitely going to read!
Great interview. Calum is really articulate and I hope his book sells well. I’ll certainly buy a copy.
Thanks Ben and Calum. Great insight.
Love every one of these podcasts. Mat, Freddie and Chris need to link your YT in their videos. Take this channel to the moon!
To be fair! Mat first came on when i was 4k Subs. Freddie at 6k after a DM. All the guys have built their channels of their own back and i appreciate the collaboration i have had with them and the trust they gave at the start. Its been great to get to know them all over the last 12 months 🎙️
This is a great story. I love listening to stories like this. The lad worked for what he wanted. Top Lad! 👍👍

Epic, great interview and interviewee as ever!
preordered the book right now - excited to see what it's like. Thanks for opening the world of the pit to us bystanders and watchers
This guy is a red bull hero! Watch him... unbelievable carrière...
That was actually interesting chat to me, thought you were a going to be a PR machine for Red Bull, good luck with the book.
I've been following Calum this year on IG - so it was great to hear his story. You always pick great guests Ben 👍
Thanks Ian!!
Great episode! Thanks!
What a great guy :) I have seen him on race weekends and stuff but never hear him talk :)
Loved it, thanks for the insight Calum.
Great interview, thanks guys for sharing. @ Calum 'Team principal' next. Loved this episode. Listening to Calum’s story and making it to F1 👏🏻👏🏻
I’ve always wanted to hear from this man … extremely awesome conversation.
Glad you enjoyed it!
11:12 working unpaid is how they (the team) know you want to do the job and love it. I worked a full weekend with a team unpaid and got hired on directly after that weekend. Just gotta bust ya ass when the moment arises and not sit back and let it pass you by…
Amazing Podcast, really interesting.I've just pre ordered the book.looking forward to the read.
Awesome, thank you!
Great story What a unbelievable guy , hope his book comes in Dutch language 😊

Great story! First time i found the channel and now im going to watch the smhee150 episode
Welcome aboard!
I love calam I used to think he was from France
Literally just per ordered Callum book today and now come across this pod
Calum is by far the sexiest member of Red Bull, so nice to hear his trajectory, wish him all the best
enjoyed this podcast but the sound was very over processed. maybe turn the slider down a bit? keep up the good work
Great interview!
5:57 same here in the U.S. Unless your high school has a machine shop/workshop you won’t use your hands for much but tapping on a screen… class of 2020 so maybe not the newest data recorded but yeah
I bet Calum would rock the outfits Lewis is wearing even better because he's tall.
Why him? There are lots of taller folk in the paddock or in the world for that matter. Just curious why him? 😉
@buzzin-hornet because Calum carries himself in a way that an outfit would never overpower his personality.
The fact that he's tall is a plus because for some of the outfits Lewis is a bit too short to my liking.

Loves the spotlight this guy
What a great guest!
Now this is interesting.
Very level headed lad.
Seems to a theme with F1, you have to take everything in your stride and make the most of opportunity.
When i think of a team work: max wrecks his front left on opening lap. And then rb decides to repair the car on track. Having only 12 minutes or so to repair the car. Do that and see max win.. i would be proud of me. Insane work...
He really reminds me of an actor in the Avatar movies just like Jake with his hair and length.
great inside info, thanks for sharing

Gave up halfway through. Calum excellent, when he got a word in.
Where was the bit about the 2021 Abu Dhabi GP? I managed to miss that bit.
Around 52:00
Inspiring !
you dont know how much i want to become f1 mech
He’s fantastic
59:27 "If we can broaden our reach, what you'll see is natural diversity"

Legend
What an interesting man
Ive been super curious about this guy because i noticed he is the only black guy. Im excited to see his story and definitely going to buy his book.
I like him he is very honest
@51:31 what is he saying: yeah for sure i mean 2021...... with .......?
Mercedes?
@@vincentkorpel8695merc 😊
Too bad he brought up D€I, that stuff is not flying anymore (that will hurt his sales as well). Getting somewhere on merit is the only route forward, trying to ride some ideology, works counterproductive. Used to like him.
I wondered what happened to the BLACK GUY from Redbull
Great story
I fail to see what his skin colour has to do with him being in the pitlane. Considering the percentage of black people in the UK and how many if them choose to follow the same career path, it sounds about what you would expect. You could just as well figure out how many redheads are in the pitlane.
Ben needs to go back to colllage to spell college 😂😂
You’re not wrong
If you watched this at least give it a like. It costs nothing.
James! You’re hired 🙏😂

Fix your title, shortening MECH isn’t doing you any favors.
You lost me with your clickbait title...🙄
Calumet may not leave as long as Max is driving.... Sorry, just my opinion..
Calumet = Calum
this is the guy that was saying that max and checo had the same car , and another red bull mechanich called him a liar no??
A product of social media, he wrote a book thinking he could get fired? I call BS, even if true, how would his team still trust him? Mentioned his first F1 race and didn’t even mention the race, atmosphere, the emotions, just doesn’t feel genuine.

I’m the only black person in the pit lane.. what does that even mean !!
Figure it out. #Sirlewishamilton can utter in the very same way.#LH44fan
Is your viewership really 95% male? That’s honestly surprising to me.
I have had a lot of Male guests which i think has obviously resulted in a larger male audience! I have some great Women booked in for next year and would love more of a balance!
