Lee! you have helped me countless times in the past and here i am, once again being redirected to one of your tutorials. thank you for making these, you alongside many others make this hobby so much easier to learn
Thank heavens for your channel. You just know your advice is definitive and utterly reliable, clearly presented and well filmed. There are so many "hey guys, what's up, baseball cap on backwards, over-excited voices, out of focus camera shots, whacky music" vids out there, it's good to know that when you need to know, Painless is just that. Thanks Lee for all you do. Liked and the bell is rung.
Thanks Lee, what a brilliant video! It's a perfect example of making a potentially complicated subject accessible to everyone. I love the way you don't waste a single word, and successfully get across the maximum information in the minimum time. Once again your video could have been timed just for me, as I have just obtained a couple of receivers from Banggood with non-EU firmware and need to change them. Keep them coming!
If your receiver won’t bind after it’s updated check your universal or lbt and check your internal module (xjt) is up to date too... just spent a few worrying minutes thinking I’d broken the receiver. Flashed to lbt not working, flashed to universal still not working... flashed internal to universal... fixed it 😊. Thanks for the clear vid.
Another excellent "HowTo" video from you. The reversed servo wire tip was what I needed, having seen no mention of it in any other video provider on programming the Taranis receivers. It was the missing link that I needed! Followed your instructions, the latest firmware is installed on my S6R, Now going over to the other videos of yours detailing the rest of the S6R setup. You are my go-to guy for RC advice. Thanks.
What a brilliant video!. I bought an X8R receiver that I thought had LBT firmware but which wouldn't bind. Following the advice on your other video regarding the perils of downloading V2.0 Rx firmware, I managed to download the correct V1 LBT Rx firmware and, following this video to the letter, I am pleased that I now have a working receiver. Thank you!
CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME? Hope someone can help me figure out what I'm doing wrong. I am trying to update my X9D+ radio firmware using the SD Card and "flash internal module" option. It says "resetting device" for a few seconds, with a progress bar at the bottom, then shows a "Firmware update error Device not responding" I havent been able to figure out how to get this firmware to flash. I flashed my receiver fine with the "flash external module" process but cant flash the internal transmitter. I have tried different versions of firmware and all do the same. Not sure how to resolve this and I can't really find any info on it either. X9D+ Firmware: opentx-x9d+ Version: 2.3.15-otx DATE: 2022-04-22 15:30:36 EEPROM: 219
@@Painless360 Thanks for your reply. I've verified correct firmware. I have every firmware available for the XJT and none of them will flash to the internal module. I was wondering if I could use an S-PORT to flash the internal module if I take it all apart? I This radio was purchased in 2016, connected and tested working, but then sat in the garage collecting dust for 8 years and I am trying to revive it. At first I thought it might be the internal clock battery but I replaced that and still no luck. I have been poking it trying to figure out where the communication pins would be, no luck so far. Been trying to figure out what I can with oscilloscope but not sure what im actually doing lol.
Just wanted to give an update. I figured out the TPS5401 Step Down Converter is failing. Since my flash would always fail at the "resetting device" stage, and the battery calibration option in the settings was always sporadic and not fixed, so I figured the issue had something to do with power. So I traced the circuits and found that chip to be doing some weird and unexpected things. I ordered a replacement from ali and should have it in a couple of weeks. Will solder it in place and hope it resolves my issues. If not I will likely be purchasing a new transmitter. Really wanted to avoid this but oh well what can you do.
Great Video thanks Lee. You've just saved me £30 and an Archer SR6 by showing how to use the S.Port on the bottom of a X7S to re-flash it. 2 Days of pain quickly healed.
Great vid, thanks! My X9D Plus 2019 has an SPORT in the battery bay. It makes it easier because you don't need a custom servo cable, and you don't need to mess with your radio model settings. I found this because the firmware flashing gave me an option to "Flash to S.Port Device" in addition to internal and external, so I went looking :)
Important Notice : On the Frsky taranis x9D plus SE 2019 the 5v is missing on the central pin in the battery bay ! Use the three bottom pins in the Jr bay, not doing so you're not gone be able to flash your receiver if needed.
Excellent video, after flashing the receiver I had some problems binding my S8R (EU LBT) to a TX16s. To make it work again I needed to select "MULTI FrSkyX2 LBT(EU)" While before the update I needed to have in on "FrSky X LBT" instead. Which I could have guessed if I had read the notes more carefully :)
Great video, but having a bit of a problem. I have a brand new QX7 (not an "S"), and using the pinout diagram at 6:52, I do not get 5 volts out. Even trying it with both internal and external RF enabled, I get no voltage on those pins. The transmitter works great, though. Any thoughts?
Thank you for the reply, Painless, but it looks like I might be in a bit of trouble. According to this video: ua-cam.com/video/8o8-_XfG2w4/v-deo.html there's some really important information about the newer QX7 transmitters...If your QX7 has the pins to the left of the SD card on the bottom of the transmitter, you *must* use those to flash receiver firmware; the pins in the JR bay will *not* work. And yes, I have confirmed this. : / The signal pin on the bottom of the transmitter is working, just not the power pins. So it looks like I'm going to have to power the rx separately somehow. :( Just so this rather piece of information doesn't get buried in the reply column, I'm going to add it as a non-reply comment.
Frsky tells subject to flashing their transmitters with the relevant ISRM firmware, to do the same equivalently with the receivers. Flashing the Rx via SD-Card of the Tx is not possible, because an external module is not being offered by the software for flashing. Maybe everything needed is included within the Rx-Firmware offered for download? 🤔
Thanks, great video. How do I find out whether I have an EU-LBT or a non EU-LBT transmitter? I can't c it on the information screen. I'm using the TX16s with Edgetx 2.8.0.
Hello Lee ! I recently updated my frsky radio and Rxs, and with the newer updates you have to flash the internal XJT RF module to complete the process and bind the receivers succesfully. I didn't know I had to update the internal RF module, so I couldn't fly for a few weeks, then I asked a friend and he had had the same issue, and helped me . So, now might be a good time to make an updated version of this frsky firmware update video ! Cheers ! Sufyan
I'm guessing you're not a regular view of the channel. I covered this a while back - ua-cam.com/video/vOAFdp52cVU/v-deo.html - please make sure you are subscribed and have the bell notification icon selected so you don't miss tips that will keep you from getting into scrapes. Happy flying!
i highly recommend you pull the SD card out and load to it as an external device directly plugged into the radio. Then after it is on the card reinstall it into the radio and use the radio to program the RX.
Hi, I have a problem with my Taranis.... I watched the video but cant get it to flash my XSR receiver with the latest firmware. All is well until i have to select the "flash external device".... This option is simply not there when i longpress on the firmware name in the sd-card firmwares folder. The only option i get is "delete". Nothing else.... Can you tell me what's going on here? 🤨 Please help? Greetings from Holland, Oskar
@@Zoomer1973 Ended up flashing an older firmware and pairing to a older X8R that I received the controller with. No idea if it was the firmware or newer receiver but hey...Atleast I can fly my drone again
I have the Taranis X9D plus. I got and loaded the firmware for my S8R receiver and flashed it. When I tried to calibrate it w/ SXR, the first pic came up showing which way to orient the receiver. After that nothing would occur after I hit enter. What do you think might be the problem?
Hi, I want to ask you, I have receiver G-RX6 EU LBT and Taranis QX7 from Bangood and I think it´s International version. When I want to bind receiver, I have XJT D16 no only D16 mode. When I start bind on Taranis, push bind button on receiver and connect battery to receiver, red and green led are still on, so it shows that proccess is runnig. But after 5min both leds are still on.When I disconnect battery and connect again red led is flashing and green is off so it shows failsafe. Can you help me? Taranis has the newest version of firmware. Thank you
Thank you. I have X10s Accst...Will a standard servo cable work between the back panel s-port and the rx, or do I need to swap the black and red wires? Cheers
@@Painless360 Thx, the s-port on the back of the X10s seems to have pinout correct, just like your example of the X7S at 06:30 . I guess it is when you would connect to the external module bay you would need to swap the pins. Thx again.
I don't have any FrSky radios and my XJT module is plugged in the JR9303 to operate the X8R. Is there a way to update the XJT and 8XR firmware without an FrSky radio? Thanks.
Any suggestions on how to flash a R9 receiver with a T16 or TX16S? I have tried using the module pins, but the radio does not allow me to select the .frsk firmware for flashing? There are UARTS at the bottom of the radio, but they are not defined as a SmartPort? Any help would be greatly appreciated, getting very frustrated with this! Thanks!!
I've not tried it but checking in the manufacturer it should be possible via the JR bay. Make sure you have the power to the bay selected by having something like PPM chosen as the external module protocol before you try.. I'll make a video for it when I get round to trying it here..
@@Painless360 Thanks so much for the reply! I did end up finding a work around (late) last night. I switched to the ACCST protocol, which uses .frk receiver firmware for the R9MM. I think the issue is more with OpenTX and its inability to flash .frsk (on the ACCESS protocol) firmware via the JR bay pins.
Perfect! Thanks for the video. Just two pitfalls: The newest firmwares are provided with the .frsk ending. This doesn't work with older Transmitter versions, you just have to rename the file with a .frk ending. The SBUS port at the bottom of my QX7 works fine, but before flashing, the receiver will not light up. No problem, it flashes anyway, just a heads up.
This is an EXCELLENT point. I have learned after many a late-night making Google pay for all its spying that, when dealing with 'how-to' videos more than a couple years old, to read the comments. As usual, the five-year old how-to video didn't work for me at all, but it was this comment that saved me. Just FYI, as of October of '23 you flash - not to the external, but to the S.port option in the menu, and the JST connector (near the SD card) DOES natively supply power to, not only the receiver, but also to my Pixhawk, as well. Thanks, Blueduck!
Total newbie... tried following another vide by someone else. Now the Cinelog will not connect to my laptop, will this work if I remove the flight controller to sort the frsky to EU?
Good timing Lee, Father Christmas is bringing me a Taranis X9D plus. But please, can you advise me on which version to flash, International or EU (LBT)? I'm in the UK so the EU (LBT) is the obvious choice but is there any advantage in using International?
If you're radio was bought from a EU reseller then it'll come with LBT on it and have a sticker on the radio showing that too. You should use this mode in the EU but you will loose the D8 protocol that some BNF models want..
You don't need to lose the D8 protocol! Just disable the eu build option on the Radio Profile under settings and re-flash the transmitter firmware. I did this and I can run the D8 mode on my Chinese micro-quads whilst still binding to pukka LBT FRSky receivers.
I wish that the radios came with this as standard as a lot of new owners are reluctant to flash their new radio in case they have a problem. Might be worth a video when I flash my main radio to 2.2.1... hmm..
great video, i'd be lost if not for watching your channel. When I connect my receiver to the servo connector on the taranis Q X7 (new) no LEDs came on. I checked with a multimeter and I don't get any volts on the +5V servo connector. When I tried with the J connector on the back, the +5V is measuring 7V, is this correct or will it destroy the receiver?
Sometimes you need to turn on the JR bay by selecting something like 'PPM' for the bay to be powered. FrSky have been really poor at maintaining a standard in their radios for this stuff.. Best if luck!
Hi, have I was wondering if you've encountered this problem before but I cant seem to find anything similar on the internet. I'm using R9M and r9 mini and they connect fine but after a few seconds the signal just gets lost and fast red blinking light comes on in the receiver. If I unplug the battery and plug it back in it connects fine again just to drop few seconds later. Any ideas?
@painless360. Thanks for a fantastically informative video. for the uninitiated, can you provide a link for a servo cable suitable for flashing receivers with a 2019 taranis? Thank you
I'm back - getting back into RC. I (as in your S6R vids) tried to configure the S6R when I first got mine. Failed miserably (mostly due to Win7 and the STK tool). Thought I'd try your "do it from the Tx" method. Followed through on this vid to flash the S6R. All seemed to go ok but I didn't get a green LED during the write and it won't bind (red and flashing yellow) - any ideas? Have I cobbled the Rx I wonder? I didn't even know about the flash from the Tx. Would be really cool to be able to do this. Great vid as usual. Looking fwd to getting to the stabilisation vids.
All I figured out is in these videos. I'm not a fan of these things myself. For the reasons you are no doubt discovering - nice idea/terrible implementation..
Problem: since I did the firmware upgrade on the fc my receiver has stopped communicating with fc. It connects fine with transmitter. But has now lost connection with f405 & rxsr but less than a month old. Any suggestions?
Painless360 I’ve tried to update the firmware on the rxsr but can’t seem to find help with the t18, I understand that if you get the pins wrong it can wreck receiver. Sent an email
Free help available here in the comments (if you sent the email to me). See my video on updating receivers on the TX16s. Should be the same fro the Jumper radio..
Sounds like you have upgraded the radio in the past. I'd look at the downloadable SD card contents in Companion to see which one is for the version of Opentx you have on the radio... Best of luck
Do you know the difference between FCC protocol receivers? And which one, with LBT protocol? I know that the FCC is for the rest of the world and the LBT is for Europe. But what is the difference? And if for example, I'm in Europe, and I use the FCC. What is going to happen; Thank you.
Most of the recievers can be flashed with either to suit the radio you have. Using a non LBT radio I'm a country that should have LBT would still work but not complying with the local legislation. Happy flying
Hi, thanks for your video series, they are helping enormously as I am very new to the hobby. I have a question that you may laugh at, but I cannot find an answer elsewhere. I have a Taranis x9d with frsky firmware that I want to flash to opentx. my question is this. Do I also have to flash the receiver (x8r) to opentx? If I do not do this, will the tx be able to communicate with the rx? Thanks in advance.
Thanks . 6 years ago thhis was mystery . Now it makes sense . Sk my rxsr has d16 because the store made it and labled it . I wonder if multiprotocol tx 's do long press firmware for frsky . I have tons if elrsCRap that needs me to finish the manufacturing process of firmware installin . They quit at elrs or do not have a computer
Thanks Lee, I was able to reflash my S8R receiver using this technique (after everything else had failed...) Just one question, how do you make the cables you mentioned? Is there a special tool or something to connect a servo plug to three wires? Thanks.
Bend up on the black or white plastic plug lock- flap with a pin or dull razor blade and look how the wire end comes out and note to put it back the same . 3x reading glasses help most people see .
Couldn't get this to work on my QX7S Taranis . I found out by searching that the QX7S needs a STANDARD servo cable (NOT reversed) for this to work. Then flash by accessing the Firmware folder, highlighting the firmware update file then press and hold the menu button on the right side of the radio and select "Flash S.Port"
UPDATE: After the flash above I could no longer bind to my S8R receiver. Below is a post I made on the RCGroups forum after finding a solution to my problem. I hope this helps someone! " I have a new S8R receiver that I bound to my Taranis QX7S (OpenTX 2.3.14) successfully. Before doing the stabilization setup I decided I should update the firmware and flashed the S8R receiver with the latest S8R-ACCST-2.1.2-FCC.frk. I flashed from the QX7's S.port using a standard servo cable and the flash reported that it completed successfully. Unfortunately, I could no longer bind with the receiver when done. I then tried flashing the S8R with the S8R_ACCST_2.1.0_FCC.frk which again appeared to updated successfully. I found I could not bind to that version either. In desperation I started checking through the various online RC forums until I came across this thread suggesting using the S8R_FCC_20190531.frk. I was able to download the firmware from the FRSky site using the "History firmware DOWNLOAD (not compatible with v2.x.x)" link, and flashed it to my S8R. I am happy to say that after the update I was once again able to bind my QX7S to the receiver. Why the newer S8R firmware versions do not work, I do not know, but I am glad my receiver wasn't bricked! Thanks again for posting this fix! ?
Hello Lee, I struggle with the flashing of my S6R reciever, the Problem seems to be, that my Taranis x7 doesnt recognize the SD card i put in it. I already flashed the newest firmware on my Taranis and got the SD card contents, but the 2nd Page in my Transmitter Menu (When you click Menu long) stays empty. As far as i understood in your S6R video the Flashing is necessary. Yesterday i tried to bind my S6R to my taranis x7 but it didnt seem to work quite right. Hopefully you got some ideas how i could fix that problem.
Your right I just followed alone and it worked. I,m a worry wart.receiver is good to 10V. Stock receiver battery was at 8V. I could see your settings for RF mode was ppm. Thanks for the video. Thumbs up.
Hi I want to flash the firmware on my XM+ rx the only problem is I have the original non-plus Taranis which does not have a Firmware folder in 'Radio Setup'. Is there a way to do this?
Thanks for getting back to me. Are you saying create a new folder in that register, call it 'Firmware' then stick the xm+ firmware upgrade file in it then follow the instructions for a Taranis+? Sorry my IT skills are limited. My Tx is version opentx-x9d-v1.1.02 All that register has in it is: BMP, DOCS, LOGS, MODELS, SOUNDS and system volume information. I have never had a problem with my Taranis so have never changed anything (if it isn't broke don't fix it!).
Hoorah, I've done it! Installed Open TX Companion 2.2.2, upgraded Taranis X9D firmware, took out SD card put XM+ firmware in it then followed steps to flash to external device and presto it worked. Only downside is I lost all my model memories.
How do you check if a Rx is EU or international? Reason I ask is that when converting a Tx from EU to open the Rx's behave differently regardless of how you set the Tx up. Channels are different.
Ok, The change of the SD Card did the trick. now i wanted to flash my s6r reciever, i follow your instructions, get the red LED flashing, but get the Error "FW update Error Bottom Pin no response" as i press and hold Enter to flash an external device. Any advice on that?
@@Painless360 I did solder the connections of my servo lead again and checked the polarisation. I already tried another one but got the same error. I tried a complete different reciever, and the problems kept coming. The motor doesnt turn but stutters in both directions... seem to have several problems with my setup...
I'm using 2.1.9 and 2.2 here. The process is the same but download the internal module firmware and select 'flash internal' in the menu.. Hope that helps..
Tried to update my x4R with my new X10S, both via the TX Smart Port and the external module bay. On each route I get a message that the external module can't be found. Any hints?
Not sure, I've not used the X10S here but it appears that there are two outputs on the back. I'm guessing you've tried both.. Let me know if you figure it out!
The oldest of tricks did it again! Switch everything off, have a coffee, a stroll in the neighbourhood, switch it back on: Robert's you moms brother! The TX Smart Port worked fine. Sorry, to have bothered you
hello, very good video, could you send me the link or better the file, to flach the receiver x8r in the international version? ... I can't find it anywhere
Thanks again for your help, after two weeks trying and trying, without really understanding what to do, because all the information is very confusing, after your help and link that you sent me, I was able to load the two firmware in less than 5 minutes to two receivers one to each obviously .... I jumped on the rooftops in joy, 😃😃
They made another change. When flashing, after selecting the firmware, the transmitter says "Flash S-Port" or "Flash Ext module". I used both front S-port and rear pins. Both appeared to work. Receiver would still not pair. BTW, you are awesome.
Hey giys im having a problem with my taranis qx7. So im a newbie to the taranis radio and basically i was using an x4r to fly a fixed plane aircraft and during a crash my receiver was destroyed. So i built the exact same plane and tried to bind up a new x4r but my servos hooked up to channels 2 and 3 are not functioning. Also i know the receiver is fine because i switched the x4r for another one and had the same issue. Also all the servos and everything are fully functional and have been. tested. Basically all i need to know is how to get the servos on channel 2 and 3 working all they do is make a humming noise. Thanks any help would be appreciated.

Thanks again for your wonderful videos, your a great help to all of us watching. Flashed my XR8 today following your instructions. My standard QX7 is not the first batch but it does have the smart port pins in the bottom. So when flashing I had to select smart port not external module. And yes I caught myself holding my breath too. All went well😅 Again thank you so much. 73 wd4dda
For those having problems updating firmware using a QX7 there is a great guide and video here rcdiy.ca/taranis-opentx-s-port-firmware-flashing/ If you have the 3 pins on the underside of the X7 you must use those. The ones in the module bay won't work. Also make sure you have a decent servo cable and that the 3 pins on the tx are clean before starting so you know you have sound electrical connections.
I certainly enjoy your videos... finding them very helpful working through the arcane land of FrSky electronics! However, I do have a question/observation on this particular video. The cable needed to write new firmware onto an X8R receiver from the X9D+ transmitter cannot be a "standard servo extension" - even with the power & ground pins swapped on one end. Why? Because both the Rx and Tx connection points have "male" pins that only mate to "female" plugs. A servo extension cable has male pins at one end, and female plugs at the other. I had to fabricate a second "female" plug at one end of an extension cable to create a cable such as you're using here... and it works "fine as frog's hair"... ;-)

The one between your ears :) Just about any F3 or F4 board will do what you want. Just choose the board based on cost against the available features you require.
the plot thickens. Based on the 8000kv motors it seems you are making a brushed microquad. Sorry that is an area in which I have very little experience so I will decline to offer further advice in case I choose poorly.
Rob B ok then what could be the maximum KV for quadcopter? I dont know much in this field Means i can do programming connections etc Bt about products i know very less Please help me!!,
i comment everytime i see these vids. The taranis X9 port in the back is full battery voltage, so if you have a 8 cell nimh or 3s lipo, that's 12v and will fry your rx. github.com/opentx/opentx/wiki/Taranis-I-O-ports
Yes Very, Very ,Very important information that i too have noticed is not pointed out in any of these videos about flashing via the modual bay . I was happily trundling along, fat and dumb, flashing a multitude of receivers with this method when one day i stumbled across an article on calibrating the battery voltage readout on the x9d. in it they suggested reading the true battery voltage with a voltmeter through the pins in the bay. At that point I broke into a cold sweat thinking NO FU**ING WAY. So I grabbed my X9D threw a 3cell lipo in it and measured the voltage at the bay pins and sure as SH** it read 12.6 volts . Just by sheer dumb luck i had a 2 cell lipo in my radio every time i flashed receivers . Whew then i remembered i had showed a few friends how to flash this way i had to hurry and warn them about this unfortunately i was too late in one case as my friend had burned up his brand new rx just the night before because he was using a 3 cell lipo in his radio. Tough lesson learned i felt like shi* for not knowing this . i went back and like you noticed none of the videos on flashin with this method mentioned or warned about this fact. Thanks for pointing this out but i noticed that Painless hasent even acknowledged your post hopefully he sees it and edits this vid before more people burn up thier rx.
Thanks for your reply . You make it sound so simple . As I said I've got the EU 2015 firmware in my Taranis Can I flash that New EU LBT Receiver I've just bought without using a computer at all or have I got to download updated firmware like you did on this video . Regards Paul .Ps Tried to download the open tx software on my computer on opening it something about it wasn't downloaded do you want to download. Click yes then I get a message saying unable to download something about language. . As I said technology is not my strong point. I very rarely down load stuff without lots of hassle. That's why I don't like doing it. I can't say it just me, Because our new computer system at work is still giving our company problems two years later .IE crashing or just plain don't work.
Are you replying to a comment I've made? Please use the 'Reply' function as it gets impossible for me to keep track with all the questions and help I give out. On this one - I wouldn't update the radio at all if possible. If it works then my philosophy is 'don't bugger about with it'. Updating the receivers is a piece of cake in comparison and doesn't need a computer expert to do it but you do need to be able to use the basics of a PC (see video). On the work thing - they need to fire the IT dept. and get some competent guys in ;) Happy flying!
Painless360 Sorry about that not replying the right way . I very frustrated not being able to get things working as they should. But saying that I have built four drones from scratch three 450 size with the DJI flight controller and a 250 racing drone with a naze32 board which I setup myself. I love the way you don't waste a single word, and successfully get across the maximum information in the minimum time. Once again your video could have been timed just for me, as I have just obtained a couple of receivers from Banggood with non-EU firmware and need to change them. Keep them coming!
Non eu means good . Eu means .25 mW only . Check before
Great video, Lee. I've come back to it a few times to remind myself how to do it. Thanks man! p.s. I'm a Patreon because your content is awesome.
Thanks.
Hi Lee, great tutorial, but what if we have an RXSR receiver that’s already soldered up in the quad, how is it flashed then? Thanks.
Thank you SO MUCH for posting the pinout on the bottom of the QX7. Couldn't find that anywhere after not doing it for a year.

I'd make sure you are downloading the right firmware. See oscarliang.com/flash-taranis-internal-module/
NOTE I also had to upgrade my transmitter firmware - OpenTX companion is a great tool!
Thanks for this info, my receiver wasn't flashing untill I tried to write the firm to s.port, then it started.
Important Notice : On the Frsky taranis x9D plus SE 2019 the 5v is missing on the central pin in the battery bay ! Use the three bottom pins in the Jr bay, not doing so you're not gone be able to flash your receiver if needed.
Maybe you don't believe me but I say this is amazing. Thank you very much.
Another excellent video to help us over these technical problems.

Not really, Apart from checking both sets of pins.. best of luck!
I cover the X7S and QX7 bottom pins in the video at 5:50 as well as notate the both wiring diagrams in the video too.. Best of luck!
Thanks a lot, Lee! 😊
I'm going to update a X8R in a few days. 😊
GREAT info! Thanks for taking the trouble to make this video!
thanks, i was just thinking about doing this. never flashed an RX before lol
Cheers !

@@Painless360 I am actually ! But I didn't remember there was a quick tip about it !
i highly recommend you pull the SD card out and load to it as an external device directly plugged into the radio.
Please help?
Greetings from Holland,

I followed this video step by step but as soon as I connect thee X8R to my X9D + Try to flash the only option I get is 'Delete' ...Any ideas? :/
I've never seen that. Let me know what it is when you get it working... Best of luck
I am the exact same - any solutions yet?
@@Zoomer1973 Ended up flashing an older firmware and pairing to a older X8R that I received the controller with. No idea if it was the firmware or newer receiver but hey...Atleast I can fly my drone again
I have the Taranis X9D plus. I got and loaded the firmware for my S8R receiver and flashed it. When I tried to calibrate it w/ SXR, the first pic came up showing which way to orient the receiver. After that nothing would occur after I hit enter. What do you think might be the problem?
Well that was a very good cleaned up video! Thanks Lee, for the great video!
Cheers
I'd expect so as all JR bay pins should be the same. You can confirm using a multimeter.. Best of luck
@@Painless360 Thx, the s-port on the back of the X10s seems to have pinout correct, just like your example of the X7S at 06:30 . I guess it is when you would connect to the external module bay you would need to swap the pins. Thx again.
Cheers for the fantastic videos, Do you have any tips on flashing a KDS K-8x receiver Many thanks Simon NZ
I've never used them here. Best of luck
I don't have any FrSky radios and my XJT module is plugged in the JR9303 to operate the X8R. Is there a way to update the XJT and 8XR firmware without an FrSky radio? Thanks.
No idea. Sorry
Great video! Was wondering weather you could do a video on tuning inav pos hold PID's? Having alot of trouble, thanks!!!
Lee, are the pins in the JR bay on the original X9D TX used the same as your white QX7? Thanks for another great video.
Might be worth a video when I flash my main radio to 2.2.1... hmm..
I don't think the D8 mode is LBT-compliant so the radios can't be legally sold this way in the EU. I'm just glad we can use this work-around!
great video, i'd be lost if not for watching your channel.
Any ideas?
Sorry, I dont use the R9M. I'm not a fan of it. Best of luck..
@painless360. Thanks for a fantastically informative video. for the uninitiated, can you provide a link for a servo cable suitable for flashing receivers with a 2019 taranis? Thank you
It's a regular cable that you can use a pin to release the two wires that need swapping.. Best of luck!
What troubleshooting have you already done?
Painless360 I’ve tried to update the firmware on the rxsr but can’t seem to find help with the t18, I understand that if you get the pins wrong it can wreck receiver. Sent an email
Free help available here in the comments (if you sent the email to me). See my video on updating receivers on the TX16s. Should be the same fro the Jumper radio..
Painless360 thank you, really appreciate the help, your very kind
Solved: uart2 not selected, click of a tab!!🙄🙄I’m an idiot
My receiver doesn't start blinking when plugged in and TX turned on. Maybe the servo wire I did is not good? Thanks
Be careful, the power connections are flipped if you are using the JR Bay and the power only comes on in the bay when you have it selected..
@@Painless360 and how do I do that?
Hi a bit confused FRSKY firmware or firmwares both appear on my SD card so what one please 🤫
How do I know for sure what pin is what on my new qx7?
Hi, thanks for your video series, they are helping enormously as I am very new to the hobby. I have a question that you may laugh at, but I cannot find an answer elsewhere. I have a Taranis x9d with frsky firmware that I want to flash to opentx. my question is this. Do I also have to flash the receiver (x8r) to opentx? If I do not do this, will the tx be able to communicate with the rx? Thanks in advance.
Nope, the Rx should connect fine. :D Happy flying!
Can i flash the L9R?
I've not used them and there isnt firmware on the download page for it on the frsky site..
Thanks Lee, I was able to reflash my S8R receiver using this technique (after everything else had failed...) Just one question, how do you make the cables you mentioned? Is there a special tool or something to connect a servo plug to three wires? Thanks.
I just use a regular servo lead and use a pin to extract the two wires I need to swap.. Happy flying!
Bend up on the black or white plastic plug lock- flap with a pin or dull razor blade and look how the wire end comes out and note to put it back the same . 3x reading glasses help most people see .
Thankyou so much for this Video, It explained why I can Bind my reciver. Now I know how to fix it
hi so is EU-LBT not as good.i just got a X8R tx from Hobby rc and it did not work,so i had to flsh it.
There are a few differences between them but it's more about what's legal to use in your area... Happy flying!
The little receivers at the end, can you convert an EU one to a NON-EU one? I bought two once but accidentally bought one that is EU mode.
Yes you can. Happy flying!
Hey. Is there the same firmware cable avalable for amazon? Will this work with a standard double ended cable?
It's just a standard cable with a few pins swapped if you're using the JR bay pins..
Do thia comes with the frsky?
Nope, see my unboxing of those radios..
@@Painless360 Is there a cable like that on amazon?
Hello Lee,
I struggle with the flashing of my S6R reciever, the Problem seems to be, that my Taranis x7 doesnt recognize the SD card i put in it.
I'd try another SD card. Best of luck.
FrSky Taranis X9D positive pin has same voltage as transmitter battery. Not sure this is an issue or not. External RF mode ?? setting.
All works as per the video..
The folder is on the SD card so you can make one. Sounds like you're on an old version of OpenTX too.. Best of luck!
There is usually a sticker on them. If you can't bind then its probably because the receiver is not on the same system..
Thanks but these are a few years old now. Just wondered if it can be read on the computer.
Not that I know of..
Thanks Lee, saved my bacon today with this one buddy 👻

Can i update blheli_s esc with it ?
I don't think so but I've never tried. Let me know if it works..
For those having problems updating firmware using a QX7 there is a great guide and video here rcdiy.ca/taranis-opentx-s-port-firmware-flashing/
If you have the 3 pins on the underside of the X7 you must use those.

I had to fabricate a second "female" plug at one end of an extension cable to create a cable such as you're using here... and it works "fine as frog's hair"... ;-)
:D
i do this all process and can't bind
:(
@@Painless360 I only want bind but radio not find connection rx x8r i have update frmw X8R still not works bind

It could be a few things. Happy to help but please watch ua-cam.com/video/olIqTiSJHIY/v-deo.html and come back to me with more detail of what you've tried..
Woah... hold on, I have a Taranis X9D+, and I use external modules all the time. For me you have to disable the use of the external antenna before this will work. I get errors if I dont.
Says FW error no bottom pin respo
On some radios they have a port for flashing... what troubleshooting have you already tried?
@@Painless360 Thankyou bro it was happymodels wiring diagrams for f4 v3 and f4 v3 pro are confusing as all get out thankyou for responding though I do appreciate you alot 👍
No matter what I do noon of my recievers work :( why did I Update to eu version when everything worked so good :( I am so so angry with me. I have used 1½ week now reading changing firmwares from 2015 to 2020 no matter what I do helps
Question regarding firmware. I have seen a couple videos where it says you have to have all previous firmwares loaded, as in order for the most current firmware to work properly. Im not sure.
The reason i ask this is i updated firmware on r9m but not on r9 reciever..any advice would be great..
Love you videos by the way, they helped me a lot.
I am making quadcopter for a univercity cometition!! Please seggest me the best flight controller to win the competition please!!
The one between your ears :) Just about any F3 or F4 board will do what you want. Just choose the board based on cost against the available features you require.
Rob B i selected 8000kv motors and all i want is only speed!!
So which flight controller will be helpful to me?
the plot thickens. Based on the 8000kv motors it seems you are making a brushed microquad. Sorry that is an area in which I have very little experience so I will decline to offer further advice in case I choose poorly.
Rob B ok then what could be the maximum KV for quadcopter?
I dont know much in this field
Means i can do programming connections etc
Bt about products i know very less
Please help me!!,
Mine didnt come with a sd card
Then check out the radio setup videos on the channel. Best of luck!
@@Painless360 i figured it out. Great videos by the way.
THANKS...
i comment everytime i see these vids.
Thanks for pointing this out but i noticed that Painless hasent even acknowledged your post hopefully he sees it and edits this vid before more people burn up thier rx.
yes, this is pretty annoying! it's exactly how I've fried my R-XSR right at the minute I unboxed it... not happy.
Thanks for your reply .
You make it sound so simple .
As I said I've got the EU 2015 firmware in my Taranis
Can I flash that New EU LBT Receiver I've just bought without using a computer at all or have I got to download updated firmware like you did on this video .
Regards Paul .Ps
Tried to download the open tx software on my computer on opening it something about it wasn't downloaded do you want to download.
Click yes then I get a message saying unable to download something about language. .
As I said technology is not my strong point.
I very rarely down load stuff without lots of hassle.
That's why I don't like doing it.
I can't say it just me,
Because our new computer system at work is still giving our company problems two years later .IE crashing or just plain don't work.
Painless360 many thanks
Regards Paul
Painless360
Sorry about that not replying the right way .
I very frustrated not being able to get things working as they should.
But saying that I have built four drones from scratch three 450 size with the DJI flight controller and a 250 racing drone with a naze32 board which I setup myself.
Regards Paul
It's ok watching how its done with videos
Mostly they are a great help .
But if something goes wrong your on your own.
To sort it out . I love watching you're video's.
So keep up the good work..
