Claude Goudimel: Esprits Divins

Claude Goudimel (c. 1514 to 1520 - between 28 August and 31 August 1572) was a French composer, music editor and publisher, and music theorist of the High Renaissance. This is a lovely setting of a nativity text in French (text and translation below). Performed with Vox Renaissance Consort, December 2017.
Esprits divins, chantons de la nuit sainte!
C’est cette nuit que la pucelle enceinte
Nous a produit le Verbe précieux.
C’est cette nuit que l’on a vu les cieux
Tout découverts et bien cinq cent mille anges
Chanter à Dieu d’éternelles louanges.
C’est donc la nuit, la nuit la plus heureuse,
La nuit qui donne à toute âme amoureuse
Cet heur de voir parfois son Créateur.
La nuit qui donne à l’oeil du corps cet heur,
Voir et toucher son Dieu en ce bas monde
Né de la Vierge à nulle autre seconde.
Heureuse nuit, devant le jour première,
Nuit, non pas nuit mais parfaite lumière
Qui toujours luit et toujours reluira
O, malheureusement celui qui te dira
Dorénavant obscure, noire et sombre
Quand ton beau clair se fait maître de l’ombre.
Holy spirits: let us sing of the holy night.
It is this night that the Virgin with child
Gave to us the precious Word;
It is this night that we saw the heavens
Opened, and fully five hundred thousand angels
Singing eternal praises to God.
So this is the night, the most joyful night,
The night that gives to all loving souls
The chance to see their Creator.
The night that gives to the eye this chance
To see and touch its God in this world,
Born of the Virgin who is second to none.
O happy night, first before the day,
Night, yet not night but perfect light
That always shines and will shine always.
O, unhappy is he who will declare you
From now on as shadowy, dark and gloomy,
When your beautiful light has conquered the darkness.
