It's been fun, but I should get more organized with it to make it easier for people to find info. When I first found your channel a year ago, I fell in love with the mature crypts. I'm so grateful to have seen how amazing they look in a tank, and now I have mature crypts in several tanks, so thank you! Your scapes look great. I love the look of a tank with a black background, black sand, wood, crypts, anubias, red tiger lotus, and some stem plants. You have a spectacular fish room Dean!
Thanks! Really happy to have introduced you to the style... that's basically why I did the channel, to show people that low tech planted tanks are beautiful and require minimal maintenance. Change the water weekly, clean the filter every 2-3 weeks and pick out hair algae as necessary... that's about it.
Thanks. Forktails are an exceptionally under-rated fish. I never keep the fry long, people see the adults and want them! They are just one of those fish that don't show well at pets stores, but once you get them home they can really shine.

I checked out your diamond tetras, fantastic tank! I really like how they sparkle in the subdued lighting. My tanks are generally dimmer as well, not great for videos, but nicer to watch in person and the fish love it... mission accomplished!

@@aquahobby1982 Hopefully, it is in your near future. Go for racks and matten filters for breeding. Raising fry in display-like tanks is a lot more work, I love it, but more work than it should be, lol.
Thanks. I like densely planted tanks, I think fish act more naturally in them. They can hide easily if they want to and are, therefore, more relaxed in the open areas.
@@Sinserg Estes black sand. It's epoxy coated so no leeching of minerals and it is light, so it doesn't compact easily... I use malaysian trumpet snails to churn it up as well. My favourite substrate, by far. I used to dirt my tanks as well, but find that it burns out within a couple years and you end up with a mess of soil and sand. I just use the odd root tab for heavy root feeding plants. Mostly fish waste provides the nutrients. Every 3 - 5 years I vacuum the sand to remove some of the accumulated waste. I start to see staghorn or beard algae and know it's time.
I am trying a twist to dirted , and after two years it is just settling in nicely. I am running a 1 inch plenum then 1 inch kitty litter , laterite. Then 1 inch organic soil. Cap it it 1.5 inch .5mm sand and 4mm gravel. Lots of fish and plants. Liq. ferts once a week. No need to gravel vac , but instead just change the water at the sump. My new 90 gal. with 8 pantalensis is set up the same except i am trying turface and control soil. Love your tanks and good luck with another breed. I think i will try the same with a cory that releases hormones when mine get old enough.

Thanks, really have to keep on top of the planted goldfish tank or you end with an algae tidal wave, lol. I'm about 50/50 with them, go away for 10 days or so and it's all over. Crypt balansae seems to be the go to plant for wintering goldfish. Not sure if it's unpalatable or just hard to eat, like a giant spaghetti you can't find to end of.

Thanks, it's in the basement living room, so they have to look OK. Half-scaped at minimum, lol. Ya, I love how the kid tank turned out. I have my first ornament in there from when I was 5 or so. I didn't take care of Sam and Charlie, but they were my goldfish! Not sure if it was these guys that started it all, but I've always been fascinated by the underwater world.
@@LushSaltyAquariums Great idea... lol, they may very well have started it all. Lol, only 99% sure, as it seems like my obsession with fish has always been there. Nevertheless, it speaks to exposing kids to a variety of endeavors as you never know what's going to stick.
Thanks! You won't have to strive too far; all the plants I use are quite easy. They don't require CO2 or much for light. Crypts (except pink flamingo), anubius, hornwort, lotus, hygrophila polysperma, and schizmatoglottis prietoi make up the majority of my plants, probably 80% anubius, lol.
Indeed, geryi are amazingly beautiful fish! I am super excited to have them! Hopefully, we will have more soon. I kept 7 from the first batch, so have 14 now and Paul in Edmonton received 10 and Darrin at April's Aquarium in Vancouver received 10. Hopefully, between the three of us we can make them more widely available!

When you talked about the pea puffers you mentioned feeding lots of brine shrimp “… so there’s a bit of a hydra storm”. Do you find feeding lots of BS causes a big increase in hydra? @@devvoedm8_802 Thanks. I should have said live baby brine shrimp was causing the hydra storm, because that would have been more clear. And absolutely live foods can definitely feed hydra that are living under the radar in your tank. Hydra really aren't a problem unless you are using A LOT of live food, which I do when raising fry. I've had good success getting rid of hydra with No Planaria which works great on hydra as well. Just working on a little video about it right now, it will show the hydra storm up close... it was pretty nasty.

It jumped out at me when you said that as I have been seeing an increase in hydra in one of my tanks recently, and I’m also soon to be hatching and feeding bbs to that tank, so It made me wonder if I might be in for an increase to where I would be concerned. It’s a 20g populated by a large population of mixed cherry shrimp and a betta. I keep thinking the betta will pick off the hydra but so far I haven’t seen her target them. 🤷♂️ easy pickings first I suppose!
@@devvoedm8_802 I haven't seen anything eat them. Antabanoids, like blue gouramis, are rumored to, but I've never seen them eat hydra. Betta fish is worth a shot!
Thanks! Substrate is mostly Estes Stony River black sand which is epoxy coated and pretty light, so it doesn't compact. Essentially just fish poop for fertilizer. I put the odd root tab for heavy root feeders. 30% weekly water changes, filters rinsed every 2-3 weeks and that's it. They are all on internal, hangonback or cannister filters, so there is good flow.
My favourite right now is the hygger 24/7. It's affordable and has a good spectrum for growing plants and showing fish. They are the lights on the geryi and kali tawa tanks.
They are generally cheap led's: aqueon, marina, current satellite and a few Chinese models with no-name I can discern. The one light that seems to be pretty good for a cheap led is the Hygger 24/7, it's been growing some more demanding plants well and has a nice spectrum to show off the fish too. I have a fluval 2.0 on the 90, it's a pricey light, but works well for a deeper tank There are two old fluorescent lights on the furcatus breeding tank and Apisto panduro tanks, they grow plants, but I am probably paying a lot more to do it. I need to replace them! The majority of lights are on for 15 hrs a day, I primarily make up for low wattage with the duration they are on, 7am - 10 pm. It also makes for good viewing opportunities. The 90 gallon and 37 are on for 12 as they have more powerful lights; fluval 2.0 and an older marina.
Not specifically. Paul thinks it was stress, like low temps and a move then putting them into a rich warm environment. I wasn't planning on breeding them at the time as I was having my hip replaced (lol, wasn't the best time physically, but I had a lot of time), I mostly got lucky. They went into a warm (82F) blue eye grow out tank that was being fed heavily with bbs and microworms, had regular water changes and natural sunlight, they love the sun and bask in it. They bred within a month. Actually, another female spawned at 6 weeks, 900 eggs, I got overwhelmed by that batch, shouldn't have tried to save them all. Tragedy of overconfidence and literally putting all my eggs in one basket.
I love your fish room . I am kind of doing the same. Planted tanks first . Much better then just looking at a breeding tank and i am sure the fish are enjoying. Love the hygger it is my go to, but i also have several Kessils and use T-5's and CO2.@@AguabonitaAquatics
@@deneng0259 I've had t5s they are great. No Kessels so far. I'd love to experiment more with light, but now have so many tanks that the low light levels are basically required too avoid a lot of maintenance. Snails do a lot of the work too.
I think there is a couple reasons. The lights are not strong and most of the tanks are so densely planted that there isn't a lot of nutrient left over for algae... which is my goal. There are a few end-game anubius tanks in fishroom. The 37 gallon corner tank and the 15 gallon below the goldfish tank. They are algae-proof!

I just added over a dozen Reed Tetras myself. Nice little group that seems to like the company of my Golden Dwarf Barbs.

Do you have a generator in case of power outages? Would be a shame to lose all these beautiful tanks.
We have in-floor heating, so it takes a long time to cool down and mom and dad have a couple generators. Mom!!!

How do you manage to grow anubias so close to the light without being smothered in algae? I have an love/hate relationship with anubias and java fern.
