- Drivers in California are no strangers to pain at the pump. The state is home to some of the highest gas prices in the United States. There are several factors that go into what drivers pay at the pump, including refining costs, distribution and marketing, taxes and crude oil prices. High taxes are partly to blame for the high price of gas in California. But, there’s more to the story. Here’s what’s driving gas prices higher and what drivers can do about it.

Why Gas Is So Expensive In California
Now cnbc should do a story about how Newsom made electricity in CA so expensive that it isn’t worth driving an EV.
Not Newsom specifically, our entire legislature allowed PGE to raise rates. Also for anyone who already owned their car and dodn't have to make payments, switching to electric has always been far more expensive.
Blame ourself for this. We shutdown our nuclear plants (clean, affordable, reliable) and pushed for more wind and solar. So we had to build more capacity and when the sun doesn't shine (night) or the wind doesn't blow, we fire up the gas plants.
was power added to the grid?
let alone turning on your smart tvs. or charging ur phone. my electricity bill is outa control. considering me and my wife are gone all day working.
I don't know about you but I broke even on my solar in less than 2 years and now it's all free for me

My mom had friends like that, drive around the whole countryside just to save 1 or 2 cents. I asked her, you're spending how much time and $ driving around just to save a few cents, never really got a good answer. Some people are that way, believe it or not.
Insane how they've got the Gas Buddy App director in the video but don't say use the app to shop fuel prices in real time. I'm looking at a $2 or more difference price spread between stations statewide.
Gavin Newsom is a clown not a politician.
The only difference between a clown and a politician, the clown is funny!
Don’t think that’s by accident. He has one policy. Rules for thee and rules for me. And when all else fails, blame “big oil”. I wonder why the “big oil” isn’t gauging other states?

Don't like gas prices? Buy an EV...just to realize oh snap, they just raise the electricity rate to 50c/KWh. Now it's more expensive to charge your EV than buying gas.

Just wait and see how much it will cost when that EV battery fails.
California is really expensive on gas. In 2021, my dad went to a gas station in California, and it was $7 a gallon of gas, but in Kentucky, it was $3 a gallon of gas
Gas prices go up and down, but electric just goes up, and up and doesn't go down, ... ever !!
But it costs 10 percent of gas and by law can’t go up fast!
solar
@@chrismd00in Europe electricity costs as much as gas if you don't charge at home. At home is half the price of gas
This is why the government should of given tax credits for solar and not EV's. Big mistake. If targeting greenhouse gases were the goal of EV tax credits then solar would of made a larger impact and actually make the transition to an EV easier as the power for it would of been free.
@@pibblesnbits Solar wouldn't help people who don't own their home. You can't charge at home as it is if you're a renter, and if you're currently a renter you're basically locked out of the housing market entirely because a mortgage is 70% more than your rent would be.

I live in California and the only problem with this report is the lack of balance. Why not interview the oil companies that produce in California? It all comes down to supply and demand. CA has banned new oil drilling, banned new oil refineries, requires special winter and summer blends of gasoline, and has the highest gas taxes at the pump, plus "extraction taxes" when oil companies pump out of the ground for existing wells. CA also requires refineries to be far cleaner via emissions which requires billions of dollars in new equipment, hence refineries close down since its not cost effective to implement the changes. They also forgot to mention that gas was below $3 in California when Trump was president, so this price gouging argument that Newsom mentions didn't seem to work when Trump was President.
One of the most sensible comments on this video from a US perspective thus far! Thank you for being nuanced.
The guy they had on was knowledgeable on the subject. I think the gas companies may have rules they need to follow in regard to public statements.
Gas wasn't $3 a gallon where I am, but otherwise I totally agree with your comment.

If CA is truely pushing for better environmental adoption they would fix the infrastructure.
The US is built on driving so where the EU might have seen 10$ for petrol at the high side they drive 1/3 the amount and take public transit.
We need functioning public transit that isnt just built toward " destinations area" full of homeless people. However , in order to do that CA needs to fix the road so they arnt congested with traffic..but to do that they need people to take public transit and get off the road.. see the problem?
Southern Californian or really any major Metropolitan area is a traffic clogged artey one oily bite away from the heart attack.
Also one thing, the push for EV is great Newsom..only one problem. How are the vast major of people going to charge if they even even afford a home? Let alone an apartment, maybe with a 110v?
Also considering usage of vehicles the top earners dont drive all that much so the cost of gas is inelastic for them. But for the majority of people on the road they have to deal with the % reduction on their take home out the tailpipe.. not even factoring time lost by sitting in traffic
Yeah that's one of the big issues. California home ownership is impossible now - the prices are too high for anyone to afford. Without a home you can't charge at home and are forced to rely on DC fast chargers that costs even more than the already insane cost of electricity.

Kalifornia has the second highest gas tax in the nation. Kalifornia "summer blend" requires special refining which adds cost. Kalifornia will not permit new refinery construction so supply is restricted. Gav is heck bent on stopping oil in favor of EV. It goes on and on. If all these factors were removed, Kalifornia pump price would revert to nationwide which is $2 less per gallon.

This whole problem could be solved with the stoke of a pen in Washington DC. Cancel the Jones Act and the problem is solved.
All those refineries on the Gulf Coast would be happy to export refined gasoline to CA, but the Jones Act only allows it be shipped on American made and American flagged cargo ships, which don’t exist.
The fact that people don’t take into account the price gouging going on by these oil companies is just tragic. You’d rather blame one side than blame the pigs getting the most profit out of it
What's even sadder, that tax payers subsidize big oil companies!
Nice, less drag, less fuel consumption, getting a daytona spoiler attached to my car
I find it hilarious that gas that can only be transported via oil tanker is cheaper in Hawaii than gas sold in California.
I live in the heart of Silicon Valley and gas here has been around $4.50 for the last six months. This video must be old!
Most of California’s crude oil is transported by oil tankers too.
I love how they blame price gauging yet it's not happening in other states. I guess only California has greedy companies. If it was price gauging why not just raise the price more?
It’s both
Ca it’s one of the most predatory states around the nation where the minimum wage should be 150 thousand a year it’s the squeeze squeeze keep squeezing and squeezing until it’s all squeezed
LETS BE HONEST, Once California found out we would pay $6-$7 for gas after Covid hit they decided to keep it that way. It’s 100% price gouging
That’s a lie! I live in Silicon Valley and gas is around $4.50 here and has been for the last 6 months.
FYI, Silicon Valley is a very expensive place to live.
Where do they keep coming up with these $ 6-a-gallon price signs? I live in Orange County California and I pay about $4 a gallon. And my air is much cleaner than it was when I was a kid. Smog alerts when you couldn't play outside are a thing of the past. It will be even cleaner as electric cars become more prominent.
It's gone beyond air quality!
Reason: California uses its own unique fuel blend. The use of "boutique" fuel blends has made gasoline quite expensive in certain parts of the country besides California, too. If Trump does get re-elected in 2024, I expect him to order that most gasoline and diesel fuel to be formulated under a single formula, which would cut production costs substantially for everyone.
Lol you really think Trump is gonna do anything about the gas. He's too dumb to do anything but blab on TV. And his business buddies aren't going to push to make it cheaper - they make profit either way. They actually make more profit when more regulations are in place - that's another change to price gouge and blame it on something else!
Under JB and Newsom everything are high:
1- High inflation
2- high gas price
3- High Tax
4- high foods price
5- High Criminals
6- high Homeless
7- High Illegal Migrants
8- Border crisis.
Come to france, it's 8EUR per gallon(2euros per liter, almost 65% of taxes) and wages are 3 times lower than in USA
Your public transportation is better
Don't forget higher income taxes too.
@@aymanhawari2589 you do realize trucks carrying stuff you buy also run on gas right? 🤦♂️
My state has the Carl Moyer for trucks, boats and trains to go electric. They also allow hybrids. So while I realized that 100 years ago. My state provides electricfaction or hybrids of trucks boats trains and trolley and buses already
The Carl Moyer Program provides monetary grants to private companies and public agencies to clean up their heavy-duty engines beyond that required by law through retrofitting, repowering or replacing their engines with newer and cleaner ones.
These grants are issued locally by air pollution control districts and air quality management districts. Not all air districts fund every type of Carl Moyer Program project available. Please contact your local air district for the most updated information on funding availability, project eligibility, applications, and application selection timeline.
Projects that reduce emissions from heavy-duty on and off-road equipment qualify. This includes trucks over 14,000 gross vehicle weight, off-road equipment such as construction and farm equipment, marine vessels and locomotives, stationary agricultural equipment, forklifts, light-duty and other agricultural sources and airport ground support equipment.

Europe is great if you don't make a lot of money and you want the government to pay for everything.
Meanwhile prices in European countries have always been even higher that that and we just take it as the norm.
93 is under $4 a gallon at many stations here in Connecticut.
Imagine switching to EV thinking it does less harm to the planet but in all reality drilling for oil is actually cleaner and better for the planet. 🌎
Alot of digging for the minerals to make the batteries!
No I think it’s the presidents fault 🤦♂️
@6:15 stop buying Suv’s if you don’t need em and get a Fit.
Honda for the win!!!! Lol I drive a 2010 H. Fit and love it dearly. 30 mpg's all day baby! Also camp in it all summer & into the winter here in CO. Holds all my gear and can do light off roads to get to my spots. Yes, it's underpowered but trade off is great gas milage.
Refinery profits are generally very low. Major oil companies make most of their profits from producing oil not refining and marketing. California has limited oil companies from expanding operation. On addition there are no pipelines connecting California with most oil producing states so they must import the oil by tankers. All of this adds to the cost.
I heard replacing battery like $15,000

I have a model 3 for a commuter car and a bmw x5 as a spare car. I have had my model 3 for 3 years now only degraded 6 percent. I will probably end up getting a new car before I replace the battery
It can be, but just about every EV has a 10 year battery warranty or so. Battery tech keeps improving, so hard to compare with 10-year old batteries but we see some early Teslas still going after longer than 10 years and pretty high mileage and maybe 10-15% range reduction.
How about a gas engine? That’s how you sound. How often are you replacing your engine?
@@11MV engine lasts long if you buy a good car, if you buy a crappy unreliable one forget it
I was in California last year for my job and was stunned to see $6+ for gas. I also did a lot of walking for exercise and started playing a game of counting up until I saw an EV, then started the counter at 0 again. Basically, 1 in every 4 cars was an EV. Honestly, with gas as expensive as it is, I’m surprised I ONLY saw 1 in 4. We switched to EVs last year and gas for us is only around $3.69 a gallon. At $6.50 (or more)? I’d do everything in my power to get off of gas.
Because the cost of electricity is just as high in CA.
Try living in the UK, $7+ per gallon.
How many refineries do you have there? Exactly. Plenty of oil here in US. Just the woke govt won’t let us drill.
It's $7 a gallon here also (almost) for 91 Octane (about $6.49+/-).
I’ve worked in California petroleum sector for 32 years. California’s vilification of “big oil” is the main cause of high prices. They have toughest restrictions against oil companies and refineries. They tax gas and use the money for their general funds. California imports over 60% of their consumed oil while apply de facto drilling ban (snail pace drilling permits). Every bit of high prices is basically due to California politics but NewScum will continue to blame “big oil”. So how’s that electrification going? They’ll see another summer of “don’t plug in your EV”.
When covid hit gas went down to 2 something. There was no demand . Yet now that everything is running gas came back to normal . There is no shortage. Just price gouging
It's 2024 CNBC. Don't be dumb to the fact the best weapon against California gas prices in LA is E85. Gas Buddy's App right now is showing E85 for just $2.89/gal at the Chevron station in La Habra at 101 East Lambert Rd. & Euclid St. That's HALF [48% less] the price of their premium fuel. Many stations have E85 and no wonder: it only cuts mpg by 18% so it's saving 30% vs premium. Most OEM's sell pickup trucks E85 compatible. Most cars have adaptor systems available. The street smart know it's easier to adapt their current car to E85 for $1000 than buy a whole new EV. Quickest car in the world -the Dodge Demon 170 runs on E85 so you might pick up a few horsepower too.
the government says "light-duty vehicles with a model year 2001 or newer can use gasoline blends higher than E10" www.eia.gov/energyexplained/biofuels/ethanol-use.php In 2021, U.S. fuel ethanol exports were 29.8 million barrels
is helpful to remember Paul Woods. He spent his life perfecting an algae and a unique photobioreactor system that grows the algae in the presence of sunlight and carbon dioxide, producing ethanol as a by-product. In other words, you add the algae to sea water, bubble waste C02 through it and get alcohol with 2 gallons of fresh water for every 1 gallon of alcohol. He founded a company named Algenol in Fort Myers, Florida. He made a pilot plant that successfully began producing ethanol. He then set up a gas station near the plant. That is when the major stock holder (big oil) shut him down. The company now does not produce ethanol.
@@ronaldheath453 there’s more E85 stations than ever and the Gas Buddy app shows them all with prices in real time. Very easy to find.
@@lawrencefearon6830while this is true and I have little problem finding E85, most people will not modify their car - even though it is just a setting in the firmware for many cars. So, a major impact on the fuel price and air quality would require a drop-in fuel. According to the official government page, E15 will run on nearly any car after 2001. If E15 was available and advertised, it would have a large effect with little cost. I think that studies have been done with higher blends (E30), but this might be a hard sell.
@@ronaldheath453 Yes E15 is virtually the same as universal E10 but often 30¢ cheaper. Some Californians are using it because E85 and E15 use has grown to record levels.
When I first moved here I was like wtf is it so expensive here? I just bought an electric car last month, and there are free chargers everywhere so now I pay $0.
People don’t realize how much electric vehicles save you. I work a state job in Hawaii and I charge there. Go home, plug in right back into the wall. It’s so easy.
Just wait !
@@rylans.5365 hawaii and cali is not the same. residential electricity price in cali average 40 cent per kWh. some place it as high as 50 cent per kWh. fast charge is insane at 75 cent per kWh. most efficient EV can get as much as 3 miles per kWh. less effiecient EV like cyber truck can get as crap as 90mile for 120kWh. if u do the math at 40 cent per kWh for 3 mils it cost u 13 cent per miles. with current hybrid u get 50+mpg and new sudan u get as high as 35-40mpg. current average cali gas price is about 450cent per gallon. divide that into teh milage u get on ur car u average any where from 9 cent per mile to 11 cent per mile. so even at near $5 per gallon, it still cheaper on gas then electricity.
as for mantain and repari, it 10x more expensive on EV then on gas.
@@yia01 Hawaii and California have similar gas and electric prices. Of course with any car you still have regular service intervals; service intervals on the Kia Niro EV is every 20,000 miles or 24 months whichever comes 1st. Only real maintenance I had was for a tire replacement due to puncture. Battery is a totally different story, so maybe that’s where your 10x estimate is coming from? Even then, battery and powertrain is covered under manufacture warranty and federal law. 10 years/100,000 miles.
And the california power grid can’t support charging cars. Where is all the electrical grid capacity going to come from to support all these vehicles
Nevada and Arizona pays more also because of California refineries
It costs $80 to fill up my Lexus, and $15 to fully charge my Tesla. There's no reason for me to purchase another ICE vehicle here in California.
How did u finance the Tesla a regular bank? Because they are not sold at regular dealers I noticed that’s why I ask no answer required
I paid cash for my electric car.
I live on $900 a month. State paid for mine thru cap and trade. @@Vasudeva108.
@@Vasudeva108. Like you financial all other cars, you call the bank and ask for the loan. Or you can finance through Tesla themselves in which they would "ask" a bank (eg. Wells Fargo) to issue a loan for you.
This seems artificial. I was taught that electric energy is actually the most expensive one.
Until you want to take a roadtrip
Makes sense what Gavin is trying to do. Eliminate gas consumption by increasing prices to transition to electric vehicles since there are many more drivers in CA than mostly other states
Maybe that's why Gavin is trying to cover up his effort to crack down on the gas industry by saying that they're just price gouging. He thinks that we're stupid.
Reduce pollution in CA, but increase global warming, thanks Gavin.
Your justification is pure lunacy 😂😂😂 forcing people to suffer to push a bogus political agenda wow talk about fascism 😂

@1:00 this is definitely California doing it's California thing. You have to give a better alternative (cheaper EVs, more charging stations, etc.), not just ban the incumbent (gas and gas vehicles).
