Interesting to hear your thoughts on A Winter’s Promise. I’ve been torn over trying it as it gets mixed reviews but I also love the concept so will probably end up trying it eventually. In January, I read Kim JiYoung, born 1982, We are not free, Pachinko, one of us is lying, two can keep a secret, Crescent City. And the second Bridgerton book. Very impressed I got through so many to be honest. Usually manage around 3-4 but it varies.

I did really like A Winter's Promise but I totally understand your criticisms! I also didn't like Thorn initially but I think he gets a lot better in book 2 if you do ever decide to continue! Personally I enjoyed the plot a lot more in book 2 as well, and I feel like even though the world is still very intense it was easier to handle since I knew what to expect?
YAY I loved Warbreaker, so happy you did too! Vivenna's character arc was SO GOOD and I need book 2!! It was my first Sanderson book and I definitely agree it's a good starting place!
ALSO you look like a beautiful princess as always!! 💕

I feel the same way about Plain Bad Heroines. I have it 4 stars, but at the same time it was ultimately a let down. I feel like it was building up to something BIG and then....there was nothing. No twist, no reveal, no big bad thing happening, it just....ends, like you said.

I felt the exact same way about A Winter's promise. To be fair, I was expecting something similar to howl's moving castle because of the cover, so it's not entirely the book fault. On the other hand, you made me very curious about Plain bad heroines!

Can you please recommend some amazing, magical, adventurous and fun fantasy series (Nothing grim, brutal, smutty or too much violent) ?

I freaked out as soon you pulled out A Winter’s Promise because it’s long been on my list solely because of the cover... I didn’t even know the book title until today! And then I started laughing as soon as you said you read for the aesthetics, because yup, that’s exactly why I’ll probably read it.
Every time I hear you talk about Warbreaker, I’m more tempted to read it! It sounds so fun.

    I didn‘t like a winter‘s promise and I‘m so glad, that I‘m not the only one 🙈
Everybody raves about this series, but I hated the protagonist. So. Much.
She was so annoying and dumb.
And I was so sad, because I had such high hopes for this book. I even bought the hardcover, and I‘m definitely a paperback kind of gal! 😪

I really wanted to love Christelle Dabos' series, the covers are so lovely. I even loved the first two volumes, volume 3 was okay and - to me - volume 4 was a desaster. (To the point where I didn't understand anymore what was happening.) So if you didn't connect to volume 1, you might not like the rest of the series. :/

The book that came to mind when talking about epigraphs and that sort of thing was Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman! I think it's the first time I saw a fiction book do it and they're always so fun, I really loved that book. I have only read the first book on the Discworld saga but it also has that, since you like fantasy maybe you'd like that! I sadly haven't read any Brandon Sanderson and the types of fantasy are probably not similar but I believe both books are really fun times haha

I read a few in January (I'll TL;DR a description if Monica or anyone else doesn't recognise them or wants to know more you're welcome to ask). Also they're grouped by series where appropriate.
Finished Martin the Warrior, started Mossflower by Brian Jacques (MG talking animals which are *much* darker than you might expect. MTW features one of the most senseless "good" character deaths I've read)
Burn by Patrick Ness (Alternate Earth with dragons, I don't know if there is going to be a sequel, but I'd definitely be up for more)
Finished Arrow, started and indeed have nearly finished Swift by RJ Anderson. Technically two separate series, but they're set in the same world so I'm counting them under the same category. Dark fairytales is about all I can say without spoilers.
World of Warcraft: Exploring Azeroth: The Eastern Kingdoms, the sassiest lore book I think I've ever read XD
Magic Required by HS Paisley (HannaH's Over Invested on here, which is how I discovered her), near future magic with a demigod and a hell of a lot of surprises. I'm currently reading the sequel (Dominion Required)

A Winter's Promise was kind of a miss for me too. I know I WANT to like it but there is a disconnect with the book and me. I also can't figure out how old the characters are supposed to be?? Maybe I missed something but I'm guessing since it's YA at least Ophelia is an older teen??

I really liked The Bone Witch trilogy and recommend you continue with the trilogy! My only real criticism of the trilogy is that I think it should have been an adult series instead of YA. I only ever dip my toe into YA, but while there are plenty of YA characters who experience some very heavy themes I don't find myself thinking of them as adults while I'm reading. Which I definitely found myself doing here. I think it was the maturity of the voice/tone of the writing. I kept having some sort of cognitive dissonance going because in the present day timeline Tea is only 17, but the chapters taking place in the past also didn't scream young to me. All of the political intrigue, etc. started when she was extremely young, and it just didn't make sense that they would have that much influence at court even as early teens, for example. I still really enjoyed the trilogy, though!
