I strongly agree with the use of copper grease for exhaust studs / fasteners, it's a perfect application for it.
Hi there, i love this bike rebuild series what you do, because i learn a lot from it. The mistakes what you do, i would do too. So the mistakes are good teachers. I admire your endurance
"Mistakes are good teachers" 👏🏼👌🏼
They are not Mistakes, they are Lessons,@@BikesofRye
Personally I also add some oil to the filter before installing it so it’s not bone dry on start up. Loving the series fella 😊
I’ve got a 1991 Gixer 1100. Hood old stlye. Bought it new !! $7,500!!! YES!!! Need a choke to start too. Keep up the good work✅✅✅👍👍
Well impressive your good mate
Boss....getting there...keep the warts in 🥸....👍
Great job. You will lose some midrange ditching the exup valve but a re jet will help.
Some blue silicone hoses would look smart. 👍❤️🇬🇧
Man you do crack me up. "I am a professional MATE" Keep your vids coming bud, they are bloody brilliant. 😂
I’d think about a new fuel hose. The one you attached looks like could be a leak hazard quite soon…. But you’re doing a great job 👏
smearing oil on the filter gasket, is equally important as not stepping on the cracks in the pavement
If I didn't do it.... someone would have said I should have done it. Can't win 🤣
Just stops it gripping and tearing when youre screwing it up. Takes 2 seconds and worth doing. But looks like this one came pre oiled
Try pushing the dry rubber gasket across a dry metal surface. You will the understand why a small amount of oil is used to create a friction loss when you screw on the dry metal filter against a dry metal engine.
You certainly are very patient and determined. To me I couldn’t think of anything worse then trying to rebuild an old bike with old parts. All the more praise for you! Look forward to your next upload - good luck mate 👍
Maybe you should continuously rewatch and review your own content. This isn''t the first time your oopsies might've been prevented with a quick shufty of your previous videos. Keep it up, your an inspiration to all of us mecha-duffers :D
HIFLO filters already have grease/lube on the oring.
Definitely need to put an aftermarket slip on on those new headers, sacrilege putting the old can on.
Maybe for mot purposes only lol 😂
Loving the build. Looking forward to its first start up. Every day is a school day!! Keep learning.😎👍🏍
I love this Channel. I love the fact your girl friend will lend a hand. Also you have a new workshop, you will soon fill it with tools and parts ! Congratulations man
Hi mate, honestly every credit, for cracking on with the job, yep so what you've made the odd mistake, but don't we all, and you've sussed it out and sorted the mistake, and if it was easy, we'd all be doing it, mega empressed, just keep cracking on, I like your never give up attitude, and remember to Smile when it hurts and cry when it doesn't. 👍🤘 You've got a new subscriber too. Cheers buddy have a great week. 👍 J.
Keep going you are doing a great job, I've made the same mistakes too 😅
Thank you! 😃
I wouldn't use any sort of grease or loctite on any fasteners unless advised in the manual,as it changes the torque values.
A hook is an excellent tool for fitting springs.Yoshimura used to provide one with their exhausts.
Doesn’t affect the torque at all. If you torque a bolt to a given setting that is what you torque it too irrespective of whether there is grease or loctite on the threads.
@@ivor1957 Each to their own opinion.
@@scottfinlayson5446 Agree on that one
As it has a flat face "flange" it's not a slip on, but a bolt on.
In winter, it's a good idea to warm up the intake rubbers using a hair dryer and also wipe a little WD40 on the surfaces to help the carbs plug in a lot easier!
What a labour of love. Wot no exup, bit of oil might have dealt with that?
Amazing video and great recovery of an iconic bike! Greetings from Italy
Thank you very much!
Get rid of the exup servo you've installed and get a heal tech exhaust valve Eliminator 🤙
You do really well. I had a Thunderace back in 97 and loved it. Got chased by an unmarked Police car for 12 miles on it! Doh!
The wife and I still think the Thunderace was the best bike I've had. I had it 6 years from brand new. My original headers rusted through and a new downpipe set with exup valve from Yamaha was £1300. I found a nearly new set at a breakers yard in Greenwich for £150, Kerr Ching The exup valve is very important to the engine, it gives about 40 bhp to the engine I heard. I am worried your straight through pipes are gonna make the bike a bit flat. My exup jammed up once and it rode crap until I greased it via the grease nipple fitted
Exup is for low down power so the delete shouldn't reduce its top end performance at all, the only way it would reduce power is if sticks shut, then its like shoving a potato in the end of your exhaust!!
cheers pal, My valve must stuck closed, till I greased it, I recall the grunt of my Thunderace@@midlandt4249
I dont know where you got that information from- 40hp????? All it does is slow down or restrict the gases depending on the rev range so its supposed to provide different pressure waves and restrict noise at different revs at the same time. Its an emission device and on these older bikes sap little if any horsepower. In more modern bikes they are more elaborate and are very much more noise abatement devices but again restrict gases at certain revs to achieve different power/torque characteristics but are mainly a noise abatement device as said earlier. So breath easy it may sap 4 hp not anywhere near 40!
EXUP doesn’t give any extra peak power. What it allows is the rest of the engine to be set up for decent peak power (exhaust lengths, how they join, intake lengths, cams, etc) without it being a nightmare at low revs.
The exup valve on my Thunderace seized up once and the bike was gutless until I greased it@@jeffestrada6857
I enjoy watching your progress, but please don’t use brush on Hammerite 😁, it wouldn’t have been much more work to spray those parts and would have looked far better.
Thanks for the tip!
Love your honesty about your mistakes and can’t wait to to hear her running 👍👍
Great video, and I love it that you show real world mistakes. Can't wait to see it finished.
You and me both!
Have used copper grease on exhaust studs in the past but it tends to melt off. Currently using ceramic grease. The main issue with EXUP valves is lack of maintainance from owners.
She is coming along lovely ! Cant wait to hear how she sounds / see how she rides. She looks really clean. Hammerite is great for rust prevention brush it on its hidden just looks well. GJ
This level of rebuild still scares me but you're doing awesome Rye!!!!
Great series sorting a class old bike mate
Thanks 👍
The refresh build is coming along nicely 👍, with the springs for the exhaust I’ve used cable ties to get them on, you don’t have to lock the cable tie together I just left mine undone and it worked a treat, I know there is a tool to do it but in a fix it works fine.
Well done definitely cooper slip use a wire to put into the inside of the bolt as well as the stud tread glad you are oiling the oil filter rubber love the new work shop
Love it
This is one brilliant rebuild. Certainly keeping me interested ready for the next episode. Fingers crossed for the start up, and well done to you, a lot more than I would ever attempt.
Cooper grease on everything! Nuts, bolts, seat, calipers, pads, tires, handlebars, even the fuel tank. My bike has 37 million miles and still going thanks to copper grease.
Personally I would have cleaned the fins out on that rad and straightened them. Used new fuel hose as those ones are old! Also exhaust sealant to stop leaks and some ‘normal’ grease on that kickstand wouldn’t go a miss. It’s all a learning curve!
You amaze me. It would have been launched through the window, some time ago. Well done mate, great job.
Don't worry about making some mistakes, its how we learn, 👍. Its nearly there so keep up the good work.
It's magic! You're the magician 🎩 now let's see if you can pull a rabbit out of that hole 🕳 😊 Looking good!
Thanks mate 🤣 I'm currently trying to pull myself out of a hole first
Great going bud. Really coming on now. Don't forget to get the stickers off the pipes, I made that mistake and left two on.😢
Great point I already forgot!
Well jealous of your headers mate! Been thinking about it for ages and I think you have helped me make my mind up! Great content, chuffed that you’ve learnt so much and not given up whilst staying positive, easy to sit and watch this and criticise but not so easy to learn this stuff and film it for all to see keep it up 💪💪
They are great headers for the money!
one problem you might find with re-using 20yr old carb rubbers is their lack of flexibility - which happens with age - and shown with the fact you had to use your whole body weight to put them on.
My Thunderace carbs were pushed on with one hand. The rubber must be flexible to get a good seal - if its hardened like yours, when you're riding the bike, air can unbalance the carbs, so keep that in mind. Cheers
Well noted thanks mate 👍🏼
Bad move dumping the exup valve. The reason it doesn't work will be because its seized, lazy people don't bother lubricating it, it needs to be serviced same as any other part of the bike. I have had a FZR1000 and a Thunderace, both with exup valves and I changed the end can on the Thunderace, but not the valve. It did seize not long after I bought it and it went into limp mode. As you have never ridden with the valve and now without, you might not appreciate the difference, having the exup valve does make a positive difference especially to the low and mid range.
Nice Rye another good one👏 Keep’m coming!
Always!
It's coming together nicely buddy, good work. 👍🏼First start will be interesting 🤞🏼
Hope so!
Almost there bud can't wait hear it fire up
Personally would be replacing any 20 year old rubber parts rebuilding, definitely would of replaced the inlet rubbers 😄👍
Wow...great job! Yeah course you're having some issues but you don't let them get you down....you smile! Well that's what we see. Gotta say you're doing a great job and I think the content production has got better. I suppose you're learning to improve that as well as how to rebuild bikes! Keep up the great work....really looking forward to next episode when you fire it up!
Thanks mate 👍🏼 need to sort the echo out not sure you picked up on it?
So pleased for you that you've got your Workshop... a great leap indeed from when you started, and who knows where it all goes mate ! But to me you seem to have a Channel that could go places if you stick at it with the regular content. .. 👍
Love the channel, You should think about putting some sound deadening tiles on the wall which will stop the eco sound, Only need a few on the walls, Or some egg cartons lol. Keep up the good work
I have been looking into this evening... bloody annoying that echo isn't it.
Great video mate you vids have made me pick up a wee project myself
What you rebuilding?
Picked up an aprilla rs 125 for 500 quid its not had a mot in 10 years full arrow exhaust and a few more upgrades on it
Your doing great stop knocking yourself..
U should do an italian bike restoration i.e aprilia/ducati😊
Bad idea to get rid of the exup valve. It will create a serious flat spot in the mid range.
good progress, enjoying it!
Thanks!
It looks hard work when you put springs on exhaust and side stand! Use a bit of string or better still make a T bar with a hook out of some thick wire!
The oil filter was already greesed, I would put exhaust sealant in the joints to stop air leaking out.
I would use a spray can rather than a brush, you will get a much better finish doing multiple light coats.
It's coming together nice tho
That hammerite is good stuff, will last a lot longer than a spray
@@jamestestarossa7870 for sure, it's fine on some like that but it's always good to learn how to paint
@@jamestestarossa7870you can get Hammerite in spray form
Exhaust sealant
Im not sure about the copper grease on the exhaust studs.
Being a petrol engine it will run very hot and the grease will carbonise.
Im unsure if the burnt grease is then a benefit or if the bolts are best left clean and dry.
Its not a normal application for copper slip
A little exhaust paste on those headers and connectors
Get yourself a JIS screwdriver. Youre going to start stripping out screws soon enough if you look at the carb isolators.
They are JIS screwdrivers
@BikesofRye ahead of the game then. 👍
Copper grease on studs 👍
Heat resistant paint I suggest because it’s hot 🥵 and can smell and melt easily
I would prefer ceramic grease instead of copper grease.
So ditching the Exup valve surely means a loss of power somewhere?
Can't wait to see this finished, great series so far! I'm not sure if I missed you saying, but have you mentioned how you're going to finish this one? Similar to the Blackbird or something more out there?
The fan shrouds look good even when they were brushed. Is that paint self-levelling in any way?
Nice.
So Black Widow didnt include a spring puller in the box?? 😆😆 All looking great so far. Seems like you are past all the big headaches and, its just a matter of getting it all back together.
I would be thinking about a quick release fuel line link, makes taking the tank off really quick and no skinned knuckles trying to pull off the fuel hose (believe me you'll be taking it on and off an number of times while dialling in those carbs 🙂 )
Also, I didnt see the episode where you dealt with the brakes, but I would be swapping out those blue spots with the little link pipe. A real pain to bleed. If you want to keep it original looking, go for some bluespots without the link pipe, or some gold spots if you find a decent pair.
Keep up the good work!
When you had it apart you should have source a set of R1 USD forks for it…. Would be a lot nicer to ride..
Direct replacement yeah?
🏍👍
Enjoying the rebuild series , also do you still do green laning
Hello , Greate job! How much did you spend for spare parts for the engine rebuild particular seals , crankshaft bearings, connecting rods bearings, intake and exhaust valves and springs. Thanks! :)
One does approve of copper slip on head studs 😁
Phew.... 🤣
I re-apply yearly cus as you know stuck/broken headstuds are a complete nightmare 😩
@@jamestestarossa7870 like the nightmare I had and snapped a stud 🤣
I've no problem with copper grease but trying to use a torque wrench after you've greased the surfaces is a sure way to snap the studs, you have just altered any torque setting by applying a grease to allow it to tighten easier and tighter than the factory setting, your best off nipping up by hand and then again after a run.
That bike is looking proper sweet. For someone eith little to no experience, you are knocking it out the park. The headers look insane, looking forward to the end result. What colour will you be going for? Black frame, so blue and white 50th Anniversary vibe?😉
Next couple of videos the fairing should be revealed 😁
Exhaust sealant
Have you ever used Evaporust ?
U forgot to use the exhaust paste bro , there’s a reason the exhaust comes with it 😂🤦♂️
The earlier fzr1000 exup is renowned for running like a pig if you try and do away with the exup valve. Hopefully you won’t have the same trouble with this.
I believe this is because owners would unplug the servo motor and disconnect the cable thinking this would fix the fault when it went wrong?
@@BikesofRye You can buy exhaust servo eliminators to get rid of the FI light.
@@BikesofRyemore to it than that I’m afraid bud. I’m a long term owner and was active on the old forums and as far as I can remember, virtually everyone that tried to do away with the valve, including swapping the headers like you have, almost always ran into bottom end tuning problems. Hopefully it will be different on the thunderace or maybe black widow have managed to create a decent header.
Copper grease. Where can I get in the USA??
They do lose some low down torque without the exup
Please let your girlfriend do the work and you do the filming! Hope to see more of her.
The wire harness needs to run inside the frame (on the left side). Better to change it now or you will have some serious challenges fitting the engine covers
That is how the harness was when I stripped the bike
I'll try to send you a schedule of the cable routing
@@BikesofRye
Great shame to do away with the EXUP valve, and you will lose a lot of the character of the bike. It’s not and never was a sports bike, like the R1 and the FZR but the EXUP is part of the character.
What is the part called that you used to trick the EXUP?
It's the original servo motor... you just keep it plugged in to apparently prevent the fault codes on the dash
So, if you claim you have no mechanical skills, what do I have? Negative mechanical skills? Is that even a thing???
Clutches where a very weak point on the YZF100R, very grabby clutches just like it's predecessors.....
Well done it’s looking great just keep plodding on and you’ll get there 👍❤️
Oh no, you haven't put the wavey brake discs on again... 🫣
They are Galfer discs....
