Liara responded "A lot of people were upset about that security upgrade." I just got a chuckle out of that.
It's kind of hard to articulate, but part of me wishes that they pivoted and did more games like this. Like, this game has one of the best art directions of Piranha games, and with little more open world it could become something magical.
I played it at release. I remember I went full on maxed Vodoo. After maxing it out I then put 3 points in muskets and it was better to use that because it made game so much easier.
I remember picking up this game when I was in highschool without any expectations, and it was a really nice surprise. It filled the void that Skyrim left in me after doing almost everything that was available. Although Risen has a lot of issues, I think is an very fun rpg.
Hi Mortym! Happy Easter to all those who celebrate! I personally found Risen 2 pretty fun. Like I said in your first impressions vid of this game, if PB had tightened up the combat a bit, it would have been even better. Also, I like the art and graphics, and the idea of voodoo as magic was pretty unique.
I loved your detailed take on this game, very enjoyable! I recently picked up a special edition of this game for the Xbox 360 & am now anxious to play it.
It's a shame how as time goes on, older games become harder to run, feels like this game could really benefit from a remaster, if not a downright remake, cuz honestly? We don't have enough pirate themed games out there! Great 100% review as usual!
@@Juxxize depends on how you define playable. If by that you mean do they run, then yes they do. If you mean are they even slightly like the way modern games control and what you're used to, then no.

I played this game at release and it was a huge departure from Risen 1 for me. I enjoyed parts of Risen 2 and the whole "pirate theme" did worn out it's welcome towards the end, but I did have a good time with it. I still wanted Piranha Bytes to go back to Risen 1/Gothic style of games instead, because those are the ones I enjoyed the most but with Elex 1-2 and Risen 2-3 I don't know if that's going to happen.
As a German and a huge PB fan, I must say that Risen 2 was a one-time playthrough for me. Risen 3 I didnt even finish. Only R1 has kind of a replay value. Otherwise I am a Gothic child 🙏💪
Are you considering to cover Arcania? It's a game I haven't played and I would appreciate hearing your thoughts on it. Afterall we're supposed to get a remake of Gothic somewhere in the future.
I haven't played Risen 1, but played all other Pyrhana Bytes games. And Risen 2 is right below Gothic 2 for me, so almost a favorite of the bunch. Sad to see you mention the forgettableness of the companion characters, as I actually liked most of them. Patty, Bones, the "second" Steelbeard and the auri culci guy in particular :) That made the final scene super impactful and emotional, especially when Jaffar gets the hat
You are a god among men. To not only beat, but 100% a game in less than a week is crazy. Still, keep up the good work! My biggest issue with this game is that every time you save, it generates a new file, taking up hard drive space, so if you don't overwrite older states or delete them, you'll have them taking up more gigabytes than the core game itself.
Risen 2 & 3 were just plain fun imo (everything else aside). I don't remember it crashing that much back in the day, it's prolly just not well adapted to modern systems.
They should have just dropped the Risen title If they were going full "pirates of the Khoribbean". (Now I'm tempted to try the licenced PIC CRPS to see how they compare.) Any plans for ArcaniA: Gothic 4?
Haven't watched the review yet but I remember from my time 100%-ing the game that achievements would reset after restarting the game and that being a huge pain in the buttocks. I was literally grinding out that one achievement where you have to kill a thousand (or more?) monsters and the game crashed right before I was there, I was never so mad at trying to 100% a video game. Can't wait to watch your review with that in mind. EDIT: Fun fact. The DLCs in Risen 2 were in the main game and owning the actual DLC only activated them. I owned all DLCs thanks to the collectors edition, but the people who only bought the main game back in the day quickly found out that by using the ingame cheating menu you could just unlock the DLCs with cheats. Probably also the reason why cheat consoles were missing in subsequent Piranha Bytes games lol
This one and R3 blend into my mind I forgot which was which until your review(you will see when you play 3 or like I called it 2.5). I don't remember lots of crashing but it was either this one or maybe R3 where when I got it the day it came out on steam back in the day it would not run on my brand new computer. I had to go into my bios and turn off half my cores to get it to run and this was day one of its release. Which is funny because on both Risen 1 and Gothic 3 my computer had a hard time running and it was a bit choppy and hella buggy\crashy. The things I put up with in PB games because I love them is kind of ridiculous(I could probably list a whole page of them).
The crashes you reported are interesting. I played the entire Risen series six months ago, and I had no crash whatsoever. Maybe those crashes you encountered are related to the resolution you played on. I did notice in the video there are some cut off value in the character screen. But perhaps it somehow shows different when playing with high resolution. But nonetheless, this is not an excuse for Piranha Bytes if they give the player the option to use those resolutions. I really enjoyed the game, but I have to say, I'm not the biggest fan of all this pirate related stuff. So, it was never such a big deal for me. Just a fun game to play, and definitely not one of my favourite games.
Yeah it could be a million things at this point, games that are 10+ years old act unpredictable to modern hardware, and all the various configurations anyone might have.

You really dont see that kind of story telling from PB in any other of their games. They are more straight-forward, no plot-twists really. Shame about magic though, it would be fun if they made it as stupidly strong as firearms, that would make a great second playthrough. Time to start 3rd one :D

This game has been in my Steam Library since 2013. I have no idea how it got here. But my dumbass was probably really stoned and thought it was Sacred 2
I have to admit that Risen 2 was why I never played Risen 3. I was pretty much disappointed and from what little I saw from Risen 3, I felt like it wouldn't be much better. Shame, because I did enjoy Risen 1.
I think Risen 2's combat was a big step backwards. Risen 1 had imo perfect timings. They weren't too fast. After a couple hours you got a hang of it. It felt more like a first person game to me while in Risen 2 every movement felt clunky and disconnected. I mean it was basically just button mashing. Left click left click left click until the enemy is dead. You could never do that in R1. Dodging/parrying and timing was mandatory.
the only reason you can get away with button mashing is because rum has no drinking animation. If you don't want to abuse it and still play melee-heavy you need to git gud
@@czapla1024 it's not only about the drinking. It just feels clunky and I don't really know how to express it. Maybe hazy? R1 wolfs, rats or humans have short but clear time windows when I know I need to dodge or parry. In R2 the time window is longer, the animations take longer and you can't react as fast. You can't stop movements. I also prefer step dodges over long dodge rolls.
@@czapla1024 I did and I didn't like it. Fights against more enemies suck even more. Really aggressive auto aim, hard positioning and undodgeable range fighters are really frustrating...I played R2 at least 3 times just because I like piranha bytes world design. I really need to restrict myself to imo mediocre feeling sword fighting and ignore completely op pistols and drinking.
@@Sandkasten36 what do you mean by positioning and what's the difference between aimlock in R1 and R2 (aside the ability to move camera in latter) also, I edited my previous comment, the syntax was unclear
Mini Games. Compared to Risen 3, you had to decrease the difficulty in order to win all the mini games once. Without decreasing the difficulty they were almost impossible to finish.
Risen 2 is a tough one. I adore pirates and anything pirate themed will have me willing to give it a shot at the least. But as you point out its a bad sequel. This would have been a fine standalone game, but as a sequel to Risen its like........why build all that stuff up only to knock it down with the next one? At least with Gothic they iterated on what came before and they felt like genuine progressions. Risen 2 feels more like a spin off set in the same world than a direct sequel. I still like it but it just........feels like a wasted opportunity to build on the foundations they had already established.
Looks... okay. Besides the somewhat interesting pirate theming, seems to miss most of the Piranha Bytes hardcore "magic". Perhaps R2 was made for people new to the RPG genre?
I was really disappointed whit R2 at time of release. I was expecting better version of R1 which was great successor to Gothic series with its factions and atmosphere and we got cartoony pirates and natives. Same with R3 but there were no expectations whatsoever.
I don't remember it being particularly buggy, could it be new hardware trying to cope with old games? Three is great. I love the way you take a look at these older games that would have been my first games when they were released...rose tinted glasses? I'm playing a newish game that kinda harks back to older isometric games, Shadows Awakening, I think it's pretty awesome and incredibly underrated, but it's great to see that these kind of games are still being made...and very well. Beamdog have done sterling work on Baldurs, Icewind and NWN to bring them to a new audience. Thanks for these great reviews! ❤
Risen 2 really feels like someone ran a published D&D campaign (Risen 1) and then completely went off the rails once the campaign ended and they had to do their own thing.
You should like Risen 3 more as some of the issues present here have been addressed. Some. Still, I found it had a deeper story and was a more involving game than this one.
I'm sorry but I'm beginning to question if these are really 100% reviews. Risen 2 is documented as a 50 hour game and you had a first impression video 3 days ago. Even if you were around 20 hours in at that time, that would still be 10 hours a day plus whatever time to put together a video. Just doesn't seem possible. Are you having other people continue your progression when you sleep or something and then give you notes?
I started playing on Tuesday, impressions went up on Thursday. When something publishes and when I did it aren't always right in line with one another. Timing and embargoes have to be taken into account, for instance I've already made the video for this coming Wednesday. While not always the case, me being several days ahead of what you're seeing isn't publish isn't uncommon. This is why my steam profile is public so you can look for yourself.
Hey! Risen 2 is a bad sequel? I dissagree. Risen 2 is a great sequel to Gothic 2, the self-citing, that make people theory-craft about Risen being veiled-sequel of Gothic series, is a huge thing, that make this game and this theme work. Also, theme is fixed in the sequel, making Risen a good trilogy, like the Gothic was.
God knows I hate pirates and everything related to them, and I love monastery from Risen 1, but this game made melee great, and is so related to Gothic 2, that i can't hate theme changing. Risen 2 is a good sequel if you count Gothic series (not as a direct sequel but as veiled sequel with self-citing)

Hey man, love your stuff, if I could throw in a bit of feedback. It'd be very cool if you noted a couple of achievements you found interesting/noteworthy, I'd really love that.
I did
@@MortismalGaming unless I missed it you just went over if they all work or not, which is not what I meant, I was talking about fun ones that jumped out at you and maybe were entertaining/hard to do. But hey it's up to you I meant no offence.
Does it need any mods or can you just play it after you buy it from steam
@@sixteen02 Thanks
no mods but there is console command to make it into dev mode.
@@Lucivius27 Thanks
@@ivanbezer272 I accidentally discover it cause there is one mission there that got bugged on me. So I google a solution.
1:29 suffers the tedium so we don't have to. Onward to 200k. All glory to the algorithm.
Are you going to play Arcania?
No plans
Just finished the second one and yeaa its kinda a letdown after the first one, but i do like the story and the little twists it had. You really dont see that kind of story telling from PB in any other of their games. They are more straight-forward, no plot-twists really. Shame about magic though, it would be fun if they made it as stupidly strong as firearms, that would make a great second playthrough. Time to start 3rd one :D
Would be better as a stand-alone game, reminds me of Dragon Age 2 being a sequel to DA:Origins
Just wondering about the tech problem's you had. Maybe it is a steam Problem i purchased the gog version and had no problems at all. And of course i love you're Review stuff thanks for the hard work :)
Two Worlds. Fable. Dragons Dogma. Gothic wrapped into one with a Pirates of the Caribbean time frame.
I would suggest Vampire Survivors for you. I think it wouldn't be hard to 100% as I have done it and it was surprisingly fun game.

Hey, this kinda mirrors my feelings on AI: Somnium Files
Thank you
My experience with Risen 2 was that it was brutal when you are alone and super easy if you have a companion with you
Damn what a great review
Bought this game from my childhood homie was super fun playing with them too lol nostgia😢 just bought it again on ebay
Avast Ye Landlubbers! Mortismal has become a true sea dog (100% achievements). We Scallywags only need to know in what island Ole' Morty has buried his dubloons & his pieces of eight.
Ahoy Morty, better spill the secret or we will make you Dance the Hempen Jig. Dont be a biscuit eater. Do that and we will be merry we swear mon Capitan, we wont hornswaggle you, run a rig or make you walk the plank, on our bucaneer's honor! We only need our fair share, our hardearned bounty and again dont worry, we wont cleave you to the brisket. X_X (I had too much fun).
Morty did you like the setting? Were you inspired? What about the music? I guarantee Risen 3 will be an enjoyable experience, just what you expected from Helix etc.
@@Sandkasten36 have you tried to block quick attacks and wait for strong ones to parry instead of trying to parry the former?
@@czapla1024 I did and I didn't like it. Fights against more enemies suck even more. Really aggressive auto aim, hard positioning and undodgeable range fighters are really frustrating...I played R2 at least 3 times just because I like piranha bytes world design. I really need to restrict myself to imo mediocre feeling sword fighting and ignore completely op pistols and drinking.
@@Sandkasten36 what do you mean by positioning and what's the difference between aimlock in R1 and R2 (aside the ability to move camera in latter)
also, I edited my previous comment, the syntax was unclear
26 minutes for R2? Let's do this!
Pls review iron danger
Looks... okay. Besides the somewhat interesting pirate theming, seems to miss most of the Piranha Bytes hardcore "magic". Perhaps R2 was made for people new to the RPG genre?
Yeah it's definitely a step away from the systems that made their games unique for sure.
Perhaps the human companions are pretty generic and bland, Jaffar deserves 30 seconds of a review time. He is great. F*ck yes!
YOU'RE DONE ALREADY?!? Bruh this man's built different.
I was really disappointed whit R2 at time of release. I was expecting better version of R1 which was great successor to Gothic series with its factions and atmosphere and we got cartoony pirates and natives. Same with R3 but there were no expectations whatsoever.
I like this. Thank you
no mages.... i see why many ppl didn't like it ^^
I don't remember it being particularly buggy, could it be new hardware trying to cope with old games?
Good show sir
You remind me of the Game
what game?
The game with the power
what power?
Power of voodoo
who do?
You do
do what?
Remind me of the game
please review risen 3 as well :)
It'll be a little bit, but I plan to
Dead State when?
I love this game 😅
Nice video the only game I 100% is red dead redemption 1
You should like Risen 3 more as some of the issues present here have been addressed. Some. Still, I found it had a deeper story and was a more involving game than this one.
You mean the most boring protagonist ever game?
free comment!
Your channel is so cool. I love everything you do here.
This looks like a better pirate game then skull and bones.
It's fine but I don't dig the setting as much as in R1, and the game is not as well-defined and fleshed out as Risen 3. R3- great game!
we need more 3rd person pirate rpgs.
First impression does not mean he started playing it three days ago. Just to make the first impression video you would need a day of editing.
You do know videos aren’t live? Lol
Does anyone actually care about Steamdeck?
@Smidlee Huh I never realised it was that popular. I figured it was just a shitty handheld computer.
