Good idea to pressurised the system so you can see any leakage from pipes etc. But doesn't let you see any slow pressure drop like the kits do. Also if you have 6 different cars in the family jeep, subaru, mx5, ds3, fiesta, suzuki then the cost of 6 caps could be more than the kits which on eBay cost around £50

Those kits are, IMO, utterly unjustifiable for a home mechanic - you are paying for a dozen adapters, eleven of which you are not going to use.
Your cap should have a pressure rating on it - do not exceed this value with your compressor.
