I tried ackee and salt fish one time (there was extra so I ate it for the next two days whenever I got the chance).. . NOW.. I dream about it, it was so good.
I'm going to try this fritter recipe when my tree here in south FL produces fruit this year. My tree makes so much ackee that I have been giving a lot away, so seeing how to store it properly will help since the ackee here is $11 a can at Winn Dixie. Doesn't the ackee get mushy when you boil it though? Mine gets very mushy when I make ackee and saltfish but stays firm when I sautee it with garlic. I like to eat it off the tree after the fruit opens naturally, tastes like green peanuts to me.
U boil it first if it is picked fresh fr the tree. If tin ackee, open tin, drain it as it is already cooked. Be aware tin ackee is more softer and delicate fr the tin. TIP!!!! I drain, rinse it lightly with cool water, and set it aside to incorporate with the codfish and seasonings. • Never knew ackee cld make fritters with coconut milk added. Wow. Must try this.
we have a squirrel in our ackee tree that be going ham on the ackee raw. last year is when i learned that you could prob eat it raw. thanks for the confirmation.

The best way to cook ackee is to steam, don't boil in the water, use a steamer. best result.
Thanks for the tip.

have 2 butter ackee trees out of 5 and we store them the same way as the firm ackee. just used the last butter ackee today. can't wait till september.
ackee can be eaten raw, you just have to make sure they are opened from the pod naturally
