    'Lost in Space' is the episode that took me from a being a very casual fan to realizing just what American Dad was capable of. Something like the ending of 'Gold Top Nuts' continues to prove that.

    The episode where Jeff was taken to space is a peak example, to me at least, on why American Dad is special.
    Family Guy k!lled Brian Griffin, a fan-favourite character, so flippantly and out-of-nowhere. It was expected to be a permanent change purely because the character had become so insufferable that there was nothing left to him. I really thought American Dad would do the same with Roger. We were shown everything in that episode to hint to him leaving the show: sentimental goodbyes, a sombre tone, high stakes and a two minute highlight reel to remember him by.
    But the show was just trolling us of course, and threw Jeff into the sky in a hilarious plot twist. That's why this show is better than its predecessor, it knows when to be sincere and when to make a joke. You can't remove a character, that ruins the show, but you can send another onto an adventure outside of the house

      To add on to your point about Brian, that didn’t even last for half a season. They brought him back like the next episode or two? After they built up Stewie destroying his time machine, saying it’d be next to impossible to fix should he want to use it again. They even had the new dog Vinnie in the opening of that episode.

      @@Hyper_Drud No one expected Roger to truly die. American Dad has had numerous times where it killed off or implied doing so of characters by the end of the episode. As you said people believed it for Family Guy because they made such a big deal of it.

    god, the line of "Move on babe, i release you." hurt too too much the first time i saw it. I was in the army at the time, and assigned as permanent party in the middle east. I had had a fairly long standing relationship, but, with me assigned to such a remote location for an unknown period of time, I made the heart wrenching choice to end it, knowing it wasnt good for her to be wasting the best years of her life waiting on someone that very well may not come back. it was only a few days after that, that a buddy in my unit got one of his family members to send over a usb filled with new episodes of American Dad, a personal favorite show of his. While I personally didnt have any strong opinions on the show, ANY sort of new media you havent seen is a godsend when internet connection is spotty at best. when we got to that line, i broke down. it was exactly the emotions i had just gone through. It was the first time in a very long time i had actually felt anything that moving, the action of the break up itself had hurt, yes, but not in the way that scene cut right through me. I felt like an idiot, and ashamed to be sobbing like a child in front of the people i had quite literally been in combat with, and much to my surprise, none of them mocked or blamed me. a moment of vulnerability turned into something that united us even more, and made many of their deaths hurt so much more than they would have otherwise. I've grown to hate that scene with a passion because of the emotions attached to it. I can no longer watch it without memories of a lost love, and lost brothers. this video is possibly the first time ive watched even a part of it in many a year, and it didnt hurt any less. this is an amazing video you put together sir, even if it tore my heart in two for a moment.

Who, in all honesty, is a god tier opponent. We get a better version of Roger’s personality splitting along with his other supernatural abilities in the greatest fighting sepuence in animated sitcom history, that ends with Jeff beating Roger to death with his own golden shit. If only Fox let them have their real finale…

    • @Sojoboscribe
      @Sojoboscribe 7 місяців тому +8

      Did Jeff ever even KNOW it was Rodger who screwed over the emperor? He could have told him that he was there because Rodger threw him in the beam, but would the Emperor know it was HIS Rodger (we don't know how common that name is among Rodger's species, or even if that is Rodger's actual name or one he assumed when he came to Earth. And, given the flashback we got in the first episode of the current season, the Emperor might not know it was him who called. How much information did Rodger have to give the pickup ship to arrange the pickup?)
      Actually, it's hard to tell just how wanted Rodger is. He was able to return home to work for his uncle without worrying that the Emperor would find him, so information may not all be funneled up to the Emperor.
      And there were a LOT of Alien slaves working at the mall, so what Rodger did may be pretty typical for his race. Rodger is a jerk, but he seems to be pretty typical for his species.

    Any episode with Jeff even before he was sent to space was always a highlight for me. Something about him just made the show more interesting. He was never the funniest character but just something about him brought out some of the best moments in others. Then once he got sent to space he proved he can hold an episode as the main character, and honestly I'm just impressed at how well they've used Jeff.
    Most shows would have treated him as what his role was initially. American Dad did something special with Jeff and I think other shows like it can learn from that. While the status quo has to be reset for the main cast, do something with your secondary characters and it'll allow for creative ideas that save you from seasonal rot. Stuff like this is what has kept American Dad from becoming a husk of it's former self.

    • @ShirtFan
      @ShirtFan 10 місяців тому +13

      This arc also did a lot to transform the nature of how the audience viewed him and his relationship with Hailey. Hailey loving Jeff since his inception was always this "get a rise out of Stan" and "make a potential mistake with him" kind of deal. Usually, Stan had to accept Hailey loved Jeff or that it was her mistake to make, or Jeff had to try to prove himself worthy of Hailey. From being married to Hailey and moving into the house, these plot lines were beginning to dry up. It was getting to the point where either they reinvent the character or write him out like they did Jillian on Family Guy. (Jillian does still appear sometimes, but her relevance is long over.) So they decide to instead test the waters and do the one thing they can't go back on with him, tell him Roger's secret. They write Jeff out for a while and send him into space. This opens a lot of new possibilities for Hailey grieving Jeff's loss and focus exclusively on her feelings for Jeff. What this did is strengthen their relationship, and show Hailey truly loves Jeff. He wasn't some jab at Stan or her seeking out a mistake. Hailey was willing to wait her entire life for him. On top of proving he can hold his own in storylines that weren't about Hailey disappointing Stan, it reinvented his image in terms of his relationship with Hailey and the family. While by marriage he had been, by the end of this arc he was officially a Smith. He was a member of the family, not just Hailey's husband.

    Lost in Space is great television. Simple but earnest Jeff outwits petty Emperor with true and faithful love. It made him a truly great character. After they gave him that send off with "Move on, babe." They should have given him one last triumphant return and then sort of made him Stan's unwitting accomplice in everything

    Woah woah woah! Left a funny comment but there is one thing you missed about Jeff but i understand why as this video would be at least 15 minutes longer. But that is Jeff being successful and earning Stans respect. Jeff has some big character archs after he fully returns to the show. He is by far in my top 3 American Dad characters. Tied with Steve and Francine.

    Lost In Space was such a good episode, that ties into the main series but stands out as its own thing. You could show it to someone who's never seen the show and it'd still work. And even though it's primarily comedic, for a McFarlane project, it's surprisingly heartfelt and the worldbuilding is fun to watch.
    Also I love the Wax Fang song.

    Jeff is like butters from South Park who started out as nearly background characters only to evolve into the most important characters in the show and both are innocent characters with bad dads. I loved the world building and emotion the Jeff in space arc gave. Especially all the cool new alien species in the shopping mall which I still wanna know more about. Funny story my uncle thought I was watching Rick and Morty when watching the lost in space episode

    Two things, I think Jeff in Space could hace been an excellent spin-off even if it was a mini-series, and second, I have a conspiracy theory that the AD episodes are in "disorder" and one can judge the order by seeing how Francine treats Claus and how Roger treats the family.

    American Dad and Jeff talk? I'm in. Jeff from what I remembered started out as a basic stoner character, but they slowly fleshed him out over the seasons. Now he has much more of an active role in many of the newer episodes, like when he gets fooled into taking part in a pyramid scheme and then gets the whole family involved at first. Hayley is a lot more fun now too IMO compared to how she started out.
