  • Who needs Lava Lamps when you have RGB LED's?!?
Here I retrofit RGB LED's into a vintage light fitting for a cool lighting effect.

Ohhh frick that's a beautiful end product! Very nice!
I'll for sure keep an eye out for light fixtures that can be similarly modified now.

The idea of the original product is that the halogen light sources are (almost) "point-sources". That allows the refraction/sparkle effect to be most pronounced. As a lighting guy, all I can see is multiple reflections of the ugly square rods with small LEDs all over them, rather than the droplet glasses and nice colour effects.
Also, with all the pixels driven "in parallel" like that, you could just use standard RGB tape. No need for the Neopixels, WiFI, App, etc since you aren't separately addressing the LEDs anyway.
This would look a lot better with 4 x downward firing RGBs, the small 10W ones would work OK. They are square like a white COB, but with no phosphor coating and there is (I think) 3x3 dies, for each of R, G and B. They also make a UV version with various wavelengths and those are really cool.
By firing the light down, the glass of the drops would then refract and create a much more pronounced effect. The LEDs themselves would be hidden from normal viewing angles, so you would see the effect rather than the light sources.

You’re always into some thing interesting!!
I Finally got around to assembling the curve tracer kit. I’ve had a few of them… for the past three years or so… And assemble mine while watching your video A few evenings ago.
Very useful device… i’ve had several pass through the lab over the years. And was surprised how well this cheap kit compares to some of the more expensive professional units!
Always glad to see a new video from you.

Spotted similar glass drops in various sizes on AliExpress... Tempting, tempting... Better start looking for a suitable base 🤔

That alu led tube would probably heat up. And expand…🤔 Nicely done though 👍

Expansion would be very minimal over this length, so not much of a problem here at all.
