    Hi people! This week I have the next lesson in the Slap Bass series dealing with some very popular slap bass riffs. Much of the previous Slap lessons dealt with the mechanics and technique of playing the style. But that is such a small part of learning to slap. The best progress can be made once you have those basics nailed so you can just dive into learning some tunes. Here I've covered 5 of the most popular bass riffs out there that should be within the reach of anyone with a basic grasp of the playing style.
    Below is a list of the tunes and the time within the video (in case you want to skip to your favourite):
    1) Higher Ground - Red Hot Chilli Peppers (Flea) - 1:48
    2) Thankyou Falletinme Be Mice Elf Agin - Sly & The Family Stone (Larry Graham) - 10:14
    3) Love Games - Level 42 (Mark King) - 18:26
    4) Take The Power Back - Rage Against The Machine (Tim Commerford) - 29:53
    5) Forget Me Nots - Patrice Rushden (Freddy Washington) - 35:23

    i am 68 yrs got married in 1980 and took a break from bass playing till 2005.Played full time 20yrs and toured the world.. i had to start almost all over again in 2005. been playing for fun for the last 11yrs . and just want to thank you for your sharing your incredible knowledge with all of us who watch and still want to learn. you break down the most complicated slap bass riffs and make them a lot easier to understand... it makes me want to practice all the time hard to believe that i can actually hammer run for cover and some other complex slap riffs in only a few weeks of practicing and its all because of your great playing skills and knowing how to teach..if you were around 40 yrs ago and we had the internet back then i would never have stopped playing bass.. thanks for all your help..you are amazing. keep at it..

    I am also an old fart of 67 years and stopped playing bass in the late 90's but I was always intreaged in how the slap and pop was done but could never get anywhere near it but with your videos and tuition you break it down to a comprehendible state. I picked up my old Burns Baldwin bass and practicing pretty much every day and I'm starting to slowly get the hang of it. Keep it up Mark you're a great tutor even though you have a funny accent haha just kidding, awesome mate.

    I'm a beginner in the realm of bass/slap and I must say that all of these riffs, though tricky at full speed, serve as great exercises for building the various techniques from fast to slow. They all sound great as well. Thanks for the great lesson as usual.

    Thank you so much for this video. I gave up trying to learn slap bass years ago and was told my bass and set up would never be any good for slap technique, so I kinda lost interest. Turns out it had nothing to do with my set up and everything to do with bad instruction and simple basic techniques that I'd been taught wrong.

    You are truly a great bass teacher.. Ive improved because you focus on the basics which is where most bass players make mistakes not concentrating on the basics technique. you may have spoke about this already, if not can you talk about the standard 4 string bass vs the 5 string bass for slap playing as it all started on 4 string bass. but you are certainly great instructor. thank you

    I've been plugging away at slap bass foe years. .you made the point about the popping finger being in the right space which effectively makes it dominant over your thumb.

    This guy has taught so many folks so much ( me as well ) . Never had to take lessons in part to this channel . 9 months and I'm playing a lot of this stuff . It doesn't come easy . It's only from more hours in a week than I can count that brought me to the point of playing song from start to finish . Everything from Chilli Peppers , Old Metallica , Megadeth Black Sabbath , Silver Chair , Jane's Addiction , ACDC , The Beatles . However there is so much more to learn these bands are great but let's be honest there's a lot more advanced stuff . Also I learned to be a finger style player . When the first 3 months were with a pick . Now I only use is when absolutely necessary . It's been a challenge learning bass lines written with a pick and using 2 and sometimes 3 finger as my plan of attack .

    Your lessons are the bomb :) Thank you so much! I just found you and am thrilled to find that you play the exact same bass during lessons that my father left me in 2013 when he passed. Even the same finish!
    While I have mostly depended on my Fender Jazz 5 String (hubbie gave it to me as a gift when dating...any wonder I married him?), and an Ibanez 6 (narrowest 6 string fret board, as I am petite) for gigging, I am definitely going to fire up Dad's beautiful bass and start rocking your lessons.
    I am a gigging bassist in a regular band, but I want to add proficient slap to my repertoire. I plan to work through all your stuff and be all the bass player I can be. You have a wonderful program, please don't ever stop! Thank you!

    Excellent video.
    Probably the best bass lesson I have come across. You make Mark King look doable!
    QUESTION:
    Does it really matter what kind of a bass you have to get the different kinds of sounds?
    Not just in this video but in playing different types of base in general.
    Particulalry for Mark King and that smooth rich pop and disco bass sound.
    I have an OLP copy of a Musicman btw

    • @TheRealSlickRick63
      @TheRealSlickRick63 9 років тому +1

      You really can't go wrong with a Fender Jazz bass or a MM Stingray style of bass. You don't have to have the expensive models either. I have an old made in Mexico Fender Jazz Bass that, over time, I have upgraded. I upgraded the pickups and bridge first. that alone made a huge improvement. I've done quite a few improvements to it, and now it is my favorite bass to play above my other more expensive basses. I can play just about any style of music with it. It's a great slap n pop bass! As far as your Musicman copy goes, if you like the way it plays...keep it. To get a proper slap n pop sound you will need a decent tube amp and fairly good pickups. Of course your right hand technique is primarily important.

    • @vicachcoup
      @vicachcoup 9 років тому +1

      Rick Hankins
      Thanks for the advice. It seems to prove that expensive doens't guarantee quality every time. Well done on your upgrades.
      I'm a bedroom player so player through effects units or direct into my PC interface so I won't get to try a real amp. It's a pity because they sound amazing. I amy upgrade my pickups, the rear pickup seems a bit dodgy anyway - it has lost volume. Not sure if it is faulty or whether a connection is loose. Thanks again.

    • @talkingbasslessons
      @talkingbasslessons  9 років тому +1

      Rick's right. Fender Jazz and Musicman Stingray basses are both great for slapping. Stingrays have a very recognisable sound. Think Flea or Louis Johnson. I used a Musicman patch on a Roland VBass system for a while when playing my fender. It sounded really good and authentic.

    • @vicachcoup
      @vicachcoup 9 років тому

      Fender jazz seems popular. May give that a look one day. Perhaps a copy.
      I've also considered the Vbass. I have the guitar version VG8 - some very good sounds on that.
      Thanks again for the excellent lesson.
      If you can teach me to sing like Mark King as well I'll be very grateful :-)

    • @TheRealSlickRick63
      @TheRealSlickRick63 9 років тому

      vicachcoup Instead of a copy, per se, keep an eye open for a used Fender Made In Mexico. It's my opinion that those are just about the best used bass in the $300 range. You can find them on Craigslist practically any time any where. Often times sitting in someones closet with very little playing time. An Ibanez BTB is another versatile bass for a good price on the used market,

    Great videos.Thanks A lot.Can you do some lessons in Effects and how to use them in styles .Whats good for slap and Rock -Jazz. When do you use and octaver and what can a preamp do to your sound and so on. That will be great. I am new to effect pedal so some talking about this subject will be awesome.Thanks again
