When I was a kid, late teens, I was asked what language I spoke, what language they spoke in New Zealand. They wouldn't believe me that English was my native tongue.

To put this into perspective guys, Nz is 1200 miles as the crow fly's from New Zealand. We are a 3 hour flight from Australia. New Zealand is 5,000 square miles larger than Great Britain but we have a population of only 5.5 million compared to Great Britain which has 68 million population .

Australia is a 3 1/2 hour flight from New Zealand.
Born and bred South Aucklander (now 62) I know winters these days are a lot warmer although it doesn't always feel like it. When we used to walk to school in the late 60s in mid winter the grass would be white with frost and crunch under your feet when you walked on it. Haven't seen that in decades!
The confusion with "eating kiwi" is for some reason "kiwi fruit", as it's called here, is just (incorrectly) called "kiwi" overseas, for some reason they (again incorrectly) drop the word 'fruit'. NZers never call kiwi fruit "kiwi".

    • @ItsaDrama
      @ItsaDrama  9 місяців тому

That is so interesting, thank you for sharing! And yes, you are absolutely right! Growing up in England, it was never kiwi fruit, only kiwi. That explains a lot! 😊

I'm South African, and have been in NZ for 25 years.
I shared your channel with my British hand therapist recently.
Today when I visited her for a follow up, she thanked me for sharing, as she was able to refer a recent English arrival to your channel, which was of immense help to her.
As you know, as immigrants , we all go through a period of doubt, and longing for our home countries.
Your channel was just what she needed, and hopefully this lady will make contact with you 😊
Your laughter is absolutely contagious Liz, and your humour is so much like ours from South Africa.
Best wishes to you both 😊👍

The differences of fauna and flora between New Zealand and Australia couldn't be more diverse. Australia gets hot because it's a huge dry continent. Love your laughter, Liz.
As a kid in Wanganui i loved winter mornings with white frost and iced over puddles before a sunny afternoon. I wouldn't eat a kiwi because they're raised in cages and not free-range.😅

Crib is more common around the Dunedin area, because of the Scots roots, but I don't think it's a word that is used in Scotland, it may be that it went out of use over there or its just another regional word.

True story- to your second point. Twenty years ago now, the story basically boils down to a visitor from the US (workplace exchange for 6 weeks) thinking they were coming to farmsville. Didn't know we had decent sized cities. Had packed more than one pair of Wellingtons/Galoshes/Gumboots. Loved their time here, but regretted not doing enough research before coming.

Great video guys, but Dallas is not in the middle of a desert. Actually, this city is so freaking crowded I can't wait to get out of here. Dallas has A LOOOOOOT of people. They are building everywhere to accommodate the influx of people from all over the country, especially from California. Traffic is insane. I actually moved to the suburbs, but the city keeps growing our way, and now my little town (40 minutes from Dallas) is starting to look like Dallas. I went back to school so I can change careers and move out of the US. New Zealand in on my list with some other countries.

Hi L & B....Kiwis are sports mad but the reason Rugby became the most popular sport was largely due to The Invincible Tour of Britain and Ireland, France and North America in 1905. At that point we were still just a Dominion of the British Empire. We went on to win against all the provincial teams as well as beating England, Ireland, Scotland, France, the US and Canada. Of the 35 matches played we only lost one against Wales 3-0 (after a very controversial disallowed try by the Welsh ref)
The British press gave us the name "All Blacks" because of our all black kit.
This defeat of all those historic nations gave New Zealanders a real pride in their young country and really was the birth of a nation.
    Catch you soon😊

    G'day Liz & Brian!
Seriously, I don't even know where to begin?? I'm still shaking off tears because of how hilarious that was!! My day was this, I was having a rough go of it, went to my car, next thing I know my employer is coming out to check on me, I'm laughing so much he thought I was on something! No joke!!😂😂 Listen, sincerely I'm a person who got EXTREMELY lucky in life! Couple of things, I don't know Brian? I was fortunate enough to spend five years in Canada, Canadians have a great sense of humour & a lot of comparisons between Hockey & Rugby, in terms of both the game & Sportsmanship? Sorry I'm still laughing!! What did peak my interest was mentioning about moving to New Zealand, honestly I've been away for so long I've lost touch! Question I'm trying to ask is, how's the the health care system, & mental health system doing these days? I'm not trying to be any sort of advocate for anyone! Maybe a thought for a future show? From experience here, with learning disabilities, it's extremely poor & overlooked in the U.S.! I've got to be careful in saying that, sure people are going to knock Americans, especially the geography skills!! I'm not Australian, English, or South African! Which I've been confused with, & New Zealand & Australia is not one big country!! Overall it's my home now simply because of how welcomed I've always felt. Computers, technology, forget it I'm useless! Make a deal, not sure when I'm returning home? If Brian's buying beers at the pub all night? I'll check to see when the next flight is? In all seriousness you guys are braver than me! I tend to be a private person, & there's no way I could do what you guys do! I'm real, that's me, technology or signing up for anything unfortunately I wouldn't be able to help! However, literally through the vibes of your positivity you guys have, I'm going to make a T-Shirt, obviously wear it, can't promise anything, but at least try to bring awareness to the fantastic job you guys do!! Not the kind of person to blow smoke, Kiwi kindness! Thanks for making my weekend, Cheers from Tucson, AZ!!

Oh, Luke...what an incredible message to receive! Thank you SO much, this means the world to us to know we made you giggle. Making these videos for you is so much fun, but it also quite scary...I can't tell you how many times me and Bri make a video and then straight after (usually me because I don't think before I speak) says, "oh...do you think we should have said that?? Did we sound like a pair of numpties??" And Bri says, "it's staying in, (probably too lazy to edit 😂) Liz, because it's real and that's who we are..."

We don't eat Kiwi bird, we eat Weta Burgers 😜. I only saw a Kiwi in a special Kiwi house where we could see them during the day, in the Waikato area I think. I don't like Green Kiwi Fruit, I prefer the newer Gold Kiwi Fruit. You can use Kiwi Fruit as a meat tenderizer. I'm more into Feijoa.
The ABs have gone through losing streaks before.
I do remember really frosty days in Wanganui when I was growing up. I don't think we had a frost this last winter. I think winters are possibly getting warmer.
I'm not a typical Kiwi, in that I'm not that interested in sport. Though I enjoy watching the odd game of rugby. I should feel split when they're up against the English, given my parents are English, but I'm not.
As to weather, yes it does depend on which part of NZ you're in. I agree with you. Though the South Island is generally colder, they still are on par with the North Island during the summer months, from what I've observed on the weather forecasts.
We gave up eating long pork last century. Ever since the ready meal. 😜

As you come through Tawa Linden Porirua etc you see all the detached houses, that's our definition of bungalow, they are mostly made of wood bcuz of tne earthquake factor. Batches are more like cottages or tiny houses that can be lifted up and taken away.
When the early settlers came they burnt the Bush down to clear the land and then just staked out want they wanted. No consideration was given to Maori ownership of it. Study more about Parihaka.

There is one truth about NZ that I have never seen brought up and that is how the lack of population works in our favour sometimes. This is an example. The New Zealand cricket Team is chosen from just six unions, in other words just 66 players, if you are any good you get spotted real soon. Every sport is the same, I don't play golf but there are two courses within ten minutes drive from where I can roll up and play, no booking, nothing. Rugby every town has clubs catering from 5 year olds and up. All sports organisations are are looking for new members. The same thing applies in the work place the competition for a job is never that big again because of the lack of numbers.

4:00 Kind of sort of, NZ is part of Australia. Originally, NZ was placed under the administration of New South Wales. However, it proved too far away to be effectively administered and NZ was cut loose to fend for itself. When Australia was in the process of being formed toward the latter part of the 19th century, NZ was invited to the constitutional conference, and they sent a delegation. Not finding it that interesting, the Kiwis in Sydney went shopping instead. When the Australian constitution was created, they ignored that the Kiwis went shopping and put NZ in as a state; thus, the seven States of Australia are Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria, Tasmania, New South Wales, Queensland and New Zealand. NZ's status therefore, is part of Australia but it opts out. It can choose to be part of Australia at any time. The answer to the question, is both yes it's Australian and no it's not Australian.
