Nice job on the engine. It will be interesting to see what your temps are once you get all the sensors in place. Oil temps, head temps, intake air temps, especially to see what the intercooler effects are.

Now you can really GOOSE it .......Hey I was at the empi open house and I saw a guy who ran his car on the Dyno.....Street car turbo pulled out a 600hp run to the back wheels. This was a public run..... Running 27llbs of boost Idk what all is in there but that would be probably 700hp on a stand. Pretty sure it was some pretty high end stuff. was just talking to them after. He said he would do an interview but I need to find him at a different show. Runs 10 seconds in the 1/4 mile. He drove it to Oklahoma then ran it at the track there then went to Texas ran it there. Then drove it home. Just over 600hp on the dyno. There were drag cars there that only ran 300 one was NA hit 300 sat there popping at like 6000rpm thought something was wrong with it. He said it is not meant to run that low Rpm he launches it at 8500 at the track. then he got the green light to open it up went to 9500rpm. Unfortunately I didnt see the car that ran the 600. I was on the other side of the building. But it did.

Beautiful engine. I love the fan. I have really never been a volkswagon guy, however seeing some of the custom builds has really changed my mind. I wonder what a 300hp Volkswagen wagon drives like. Wow.

Am I the only one hearing that pinging on those full throttle pulls??? It’s easy to hear when the camera was in the back you might not be able to hear it in the front seat. I’d do some logging and check your knock sensor trace (if you have one). Obviously knocking under boost is not good.

She is my baby!! Thanks for the comment brother, yeah there was some issued with the MAP sensor but all fixed now. The difference is crazy. Cleaned up that pinging 4 sure!!

Sounds wonderful, performance looks awesome. But those pipes hanging underneath, even if several inches higher, look prone to getting caught onto any wayward item on the road Any troubles two years later?

dont you need a different tune for the e85 or do your fuel trim numbers range that far. will need a lot more fuel. I am considering converting to e85 on mine. better cooling and cheaper. less saudi oil too. but you do use much more of it.
Yup... engine must be tuned for E85 and mine has been. Tuned for both 93 Petrol and E85 mixture using a flex fuel sensor with my Haltech.
omg that ping is so bad. Got to stop driving it hard or you're going to loose some internal parts. SOUNDS LIKE THE BACON IS COOKING!

Riding wth you in that reminds me of when my buddy Todd took me out in the first turbo car I ever rode in. 1st, then 2nd then 3rd with 3.88s watched the speedo go straight to 90 in 3rd in a couple seconds.
lol... 0-70 in about 4.2.... it's crazy! Love it... can't wait to see what the E85 feels like.
if you are having a problems with it bottoming out change the stock stopper from bug to bus stopper they are taller and will stop it from bottoming out and you will leave much harder .
I hope he did some tuning on that thing. When he gets into third it is pining like crazy. Maybe E85 will fix that not sure.

But you need to be able to look at an AFR gauge, I think it’s pinging badly.(detonation).
I can see everything through my laptop... a few sensors aren't working but I'll get it sorted before I head to the tuner.

Yea I am going to interview him in a future video I have seen him around but didnt know about the car. He is not using all that HP either. totally capable of 9s or less. Via Gear ratios and tires maybe some wheelie bars But I think he is prietty proud of 10s which is a huge accomplishment. Taller tires on the rear of your car would really help larger circumference also has more traction. so like 70 series would really help. Would create more bog on the turbo and that makes it want to boost. tall tires and 3.88s capable of near 100mph like 95 in 3td

Can you tell me where did you get the bumpers and exhaust? I have a 1967 bug with a 2110cc engine, it has a stringer exhaust but wanting to change up.
Bumpers are available through CIP1 they are solid aluminum, pretty easy to search for. The exhaust is custom for the turbo.

I had a 200-ish HP '71 Corolla many years ago. People may not be impressed with that but A) The car only weighed about 1700 pounds and B) That was naturally aspirated! Biggest downside was I had the original rear wheel gearing and 4 speed tranny, so running 55mph on the highway was an adventure in high revs... I planned on upgrading to the available 5 speed but I sold the car because my mom was afraid I was going to kill myself in it.

What do you have in the engine as size and money including EFI and all that?
Trans doesn't sound build as far as racing gears so maybe some info on that .
Lol... I have no idea to be honest. Well over 20k in engine and transmission. Transmission is built as well, solid main shaft and Weddle gears. Nothing cheap.

Probably not man... I could give a general idea but it's going to vary greatly based on what deals people can work out.

When you accelerate at like 7:28 into the video, and after that, it sounds like detonation when you are making power.
Sorry didnt see other people reported the same thing. Your timing is too far advanced. I would do a compression test while your at it to make sure you didn’t shatter any pistons rings. Bug looks killer! Dont drive it till the timing is fixed

Hey JW, awesome job on car build, looks and sounds good. If you don't mind me asking. I was wonder how your AFR table and Spark Tables look?
I'm building a 2110 efi turbo system with the Haltech stuff. Using their R3 ECU, PD16, Dash and Keypad setup. Just trying to fine some good tables to start out with. Give me a good email if you like, and maybe you can send me that info and I'll keep you updated on my build and exchange some Idea's. I worked for SpaceX as a propulsion tech and now as a aircraft specialist for Lockheed Martin on there X-59 and F-22 programs. So looking to go wild on her like you did yours. Just hope I can do as nice as of job as you did.

I hate to criticize such an awesome build, but my only quibble is the exhaust placement. It just messes up the beautiful looks of this car. There are tons of other exhaust options that do not look like an afterthought and would flow much better with this ride.
But apart from that the rest is titty!!!!!

You are so right John and I'm working on something different, this was the exhaust that came with the engine and it fit a bit better under the later chassis. 😀 I'm on it brother!! Upgrades are coming!!

The largest popular aftermarket engine being built is a 2332cc turbo engine. There are a few different companies that build turnkey engines.

People talk smack on these engines because stock they’re underpowered but some bolt ons and a maybe a turbo will gap whatever Mopar boat they’re driving with twice the hp
Not to mention the vw will most likely carry the front tires in 2 and 3 rd gear and they handle like there on rails

that intercooler looks nice but how does it get air flow through it? unless there's a big hole in the firewall with some air ducting, it seems like it would be useless.

What is your base engine size?
This motor is a 2287 turbo but I'm also building a 1600 single port.

Sick build man! I've been turbocharged stroked type 1 for many years myself. What's that noise I hear, is that detonation I'm hearing though????
You are correct... there was some issues with the MAP sensor... that has been corrected and now fuel and timing are definitely much better. The difference is night and day when I go into boost!!

Old video brother... live and learn... engine has been rebuilt since then. Running now with 20lbs of boost no pinging.

I'm in the beginning stages with mine, 63 ragtop. Really wish the previous owner hadn't turned it into a Baja but I have to admit it's super easy to work on.
