  • This bass tutorial will teach you the exact way to play Groove Is In The Heart by Deee-Lite. I'll also show you that the tone is plectrum/flatwound string and (probably) a Fender Precision bass.
I'll also show you how to transpose this to the original key (it's a sample from a Herbie Hancock soundtrack album with Ron Carter on bass) as well as improvise some fills in the key.

It’s so hard to picture Ron Carter playing with a plec! I’m going to muddy the waters further- the original reminds me tonally of one of those Fender VI basses (though it could be because the guitar doubles up at the beginning). It definitely doesn’t sound like Bootsy is playing at all. It’s always fascinated me this one too, a classic by accident. Good vid as ever

Cool video! I’ve loved this song since I was a child, it was released a year after I was born. Will definitely give that Herbie Hancock album a listen because I always find it cool to hear where samples came from. Looking up the samples from west coast gangster rap sometimes gave me some real surprises😂

I love this bass line. Nick Seymour, bass player from Crowded House, started playing this at a gig in March we attended and this tune just stuck in my head. But his is really interesting you explaining the tone and the strings you think they used. Really enjoyed it Dan as I normally enjoy your lessons. Regarding yesterday's lessons have a listen to the Cake version of I will survive. I think you will enjoy it.

In the Film clip there is a Casio FZ-1briefly shown and I think the tempo may be the raw sample played 4 steps down which would have slowed in tempo. I had one of these samplers and they were 16 bit and you could on a fully expanded 2 meg FZ have almost a minute of sample time. it was also possible to add Q and Freq as well as a range of touch sensitive data over sloped and exponential time events. Time stretching and pitch preservation was not really a thing back then and was only really found in Editing after market software like Alchemy for Macs with 4 meg Ram and Avalon for the Atari ST-FM and better with 2Meg Ram... File transfers were over MIDI with the FZ1 and that band rate was 9Hz it took all night to transfer a minute of sample time. That is, if it worked. The reason you sped up samples back then was to get as much sample as you could to save on memory. Not sure if they actually did this but if I was doing it at home I bet producers were doing it too. It might even be the case that they sampled the record at 45 Rpm using the technics SL1200 also used in the film clip and doing that saves even more memory and would get you that plectrum attack doing this to samples often added groove and texture. I probably added confusion than clarified any of this but to be fair you brought up sampling and...
Also, great lesson too and cracking Bassline whom ever played it
