I love the fact that you can pack a 4 hour lesson in 27 minutes! It’s obvious to me that you have spent a lot of time teaching. You’re clear and concise with out any unnecessary showing off. Great lesson Dan. Really appreciate what you do. Keep it up mate.
Yes, nearly 20 years teaching but, I must say, teaching on UA-cam is VERY different. I wasn’t sure I’d enjoy it but I do, not least because of the community and people like you. Thanks, Ryan!
One of the most educational, tasteful and all-round musical bass videos ever posted to YT. Superb work Dan, you've kicked all the others (names not mentioned) out of the game. Exceptional.
This channel has really turned out to be a great learning tool for me. I've commented on some of your other videos that where you differ is you're showing this in a way that the average person can grasp the mechanics or the shapes and individual notes and actually apply them to the real world of just playing music! I'm a seasoned player but when I learned, the video platforms did not exist and you either learned by ear or you went to classes to have someone explain this to you. I learned by ear and my only saving grace was that I sat down and took the time to learn all of the individual notes on the neck of the guitar which also applied directly to the bass. I was learning the basics of shapes and scales by ear without even knowing what I was doing so now I'm playing connect the dots and catch-up thanks to videos like this. I only wish I would have learned this much earlier. Your videos have been a BIG impact for me in filling in gaps and working on my weak areas along with making me look at what I do from a different approach when I sit down and even just just noodle much less practice. I'm sure that others like myself have probably told you this too. On a side note I noticed in a lot of your videos I've seen so far that you are playing an Ibanez bass. Ibanez was what I settled with over the years. I have two that were converted over to fretless and two that are fretted for work and I fell in love with the 24 fret necks years ago. Hey man great job and keep pumping out these videos because they are appreciated.
Thanks a lot for your lovely comment - I really appreciate your words. I’m very happy you’re filling in the gaps too, it’s never too late to learn and to improve. Keep it up! That Ibanez is my main UA-cam bass I guess. My main working bass is a MusicMan StingRay 5.
@@OnlineBassCourses I had just watched the video you did covering the different basses you own and use. I've owned a handful of basses including a Fender Jazz Journeyman that I wish I would have held on to. I own two Hofner replica basses (one fretted and one fretless) that absolutely kill with tone for blues and country but in the end I settled on the Ibanez basses because they play really well and you can get a lot of different tones out of them especially with their active EQ's and the dual pickups where you can get a decent bright bridge tone or a warm neck tone even with their mid priced instruments. In the end it was the 24 fret neck that won my fingers because I love to be able to play upstairs for quick accents that stand out. In your video covering your basses you're correct that these days even a beginner can afford something quality enough to take to a stage with. As to my earlier remark what I said, I meant. You've presented this information in a way where people aren't overwhelmed which can make some people feel like they bit off more than they can chew. That's one of the biggest mistakes I see on a lot of music lesson channels. I always tell others that it's all about the song and no matter what chops you may know that in the end it's still about the song unless you're in a muscle band playing Dream Theater.
I got to :40 and have to say, beautiful playing that shows your skills and musicality, very melodic while being restrained (in a good way) as we’ve all seen musicians bass and otherwise that are trying to fit in as many notes as possible, and/or the playing is super mechanical and lacking feeling, imo of course. Kudos to you, I enjoy what you do so thank you now I’ll go watch the rest!
It’s only because I can’t do what they can do 😂 Only joking, thanks for the comment, I really appreciate it. I’ve always had an ear for the more restrained, melodic side of playing.
I can't tell you how much better my playing has gotten since starting to watch your vids a few months ago! Just had band practice last night and I felt so in charge of the fretboard. I've paid for Scott's Bass Lessons in the past, and it was useful, but I've gotten TONS more progress out of your free videos. No competition. Thanks and keep it up!
Wow, that’s a huge compliment - thanks! It’s so much fun when you start to master the fretboard isn’t it? Keep it up and let me know if there are any areas I can help with. 👍🙏
Hi Dan! Thank you for another great lesson. You mentioned you might do a second one as a continuation of this lesson. Please do! This is exactly what I need to learn. I'm writing bass lines for some songs a friend wrote and this lesson helps a lot. I appreciate your teaching style so much! Thank you! 😊
I know I commented alot I grew up watching my brother playing Bass with legendary artist in the 70s. One day I was 27 yrs old n my brother said I got you a band Billy n you can do it. Also they were booked all year , but practiced in an open bar ( I didn't know how to play Bass ) not even one song. BMy Brother said you can do it. Then he had to leave outta town. So before he left . I got a G/L Bass n 2-15 cab n made a complete fool outta myself. I didn't quit n I got yelled at by the guitar player n laughed at in front of softball teams n others. But I kept on even quit my job . Playing every weekend helped a variety of music. I got band offer's n various compliments I worked digging ditches n jackhammering my hands felt crimped n still I loved playing Bass. I wished I'd known Dandy Dan's teachings then. It's humbling to be able to work on Dan's teachings. That's why it means so much
I was working on learning Guantanmera note for note, when the triads in this piece became apparent and it became a whole lot eaiser for me figure how to play it, I felt a little well kind of stupid for not understanding this beautiful songs bass parts to learn in the first place. I am maybe a tough myself I don't like making dumb mistakes on a piece, that most bassist consider to be fun and easy, I have never had a professional bass instructor. I love the bass guitar. I love my Fender Mustang. I would love to meet Victor Wooten. My dream is to meet him someday at a bass seminar, He is the best😎 and so are you!!! There is so much to learn on the bass what a wonderfly challenging instrument it is.
Wow, Dan. I love your videos. This is such a great lesson! I really wish I could have you as a private instructor. :-) Thank you for your generosity, in sharing your knowledge.
I've just been winging everything with pentatonic runs, turns out that's not a bad way to go by the sounds of this lol, V helpful vid, deffo going to be working on all of these, cheers!
Thanks, Steven! Interesting to know. Attention spans are so short these days it’s hard to know where to place lessons. I think there’s room for short and long videos so thanks for the comment.
Hi Dan, love your teaching methods. Thanks for the clear explanations of the content. Could you name a few of the bands/ singers you have toured or recorded with, so i can check out some of your playing?
Thanks! I think you can find that on www.danhawkinsbass.com. Here are some remote recording credits: ua-cam.com/play/PL9Tplpr-VMm-NgRU5cLGCQYxK2L1zVqK3.html.
Great lesson, Dan. Can you think of the second or ninth as the dominant of the dominant? I never understood why a ii V I progression is used as much as it is.
ii V I progressions are very common, especially in jazz. Here, I’m just talking about the 9th in relation to the root of the two chords in the lesson. Nothing more. If you made a dominant chord out of that note then you could think of it like that.
Dan, thank you so much for sharing this content. I'm looking forward to going through the rest of your library and learning more. That backing track sounds great. What are you using or recommend for a software/equipment setup?
@@OnlineBassCourses thank you, Dan. Just earlier today I was going through this video with my bass and working improvising over the changes. Youre a great teacher.
Hi Dan, another comment here. I transcribed (not written. Jsut learned to play it) your solo at the start and noticed that you very rarely use the 4th or the 6th scale tones of either the Dorian or Lydian scales, unless using stepwise motion. Is this something that only comes from experience? I know theres some music theory implications around thr 4th, and maybe the 6th as well. Any comments around this or content you have that discusses why?
I have no idea why! It’s not necessarily good or bad, just what I was hearing at that moment I guess. Using those intervals might have sounded amazing: must try that next time… 🙏🙏
