Awesome to hear from 2 Mexican Americans about Merida. I grew up in Chicago too. You gave me something none of the other UA-camr have mentioned and that is Salsa!! I love dancing too! I knew about the music and dancing in the parks but you gave me the Spanish name: serenadas! Tell me if that is right? Makes sense that type of music is serenading! I love lately we have been getting comments from more people from Chicago. Yes, they have a plazas dedicated to seranades and every week they have beautiful concerts there. Dancing is very important to us and in Mexico we haven’t seen salsa dancing and live salsa like Merida. But it is really hot! Like extremely HOT. That is one thing to consider. I'm a Canadian and had already been thinking of living in Merida for 6 months of the year. Haven't been there yet though, but have a trip planned for October to check it out for my 60th bday. You have me sold, just have to convince hubby now, thank you!

Awesome video guys! We loved the six weeks we spent in Merida so much, can't wait to go back in the future. It really is a world-class city, you guys nailed it with the convenient international restaurant and shopping scene mixed with the small-town feel and safety. I feel like that is so rare to get in a city that size! For sure the only downside is the weather BUT at least there are nearby beaches and the cenotes are such a life hack to beat the heat. There's nothing more depressing than living somewhere super hot with nowhere to swim haha!
That would be very tough to live in a city where you’re melting and you have to no where to take a breeze. Hope all is well with you both. We saw your videos on Chiapas today and it looks awesome! Chiapas is another place to run to escape the scorching heat!
I visited Merida this past July specifically to experience the heat. It was very hot and humid. But I enjoyed it. Plan to go back in January and stay longer. Great video.
Lately I’ve been thinking of moving to Pensaco aka Rocky Point. When I went down there the first time just before the pandemic, I knew I had to embed it in my short film I was working on at the time. I even embedded some footage I shot there into my short film Vision Quest, which you can find on my channel. For now I’m just producing short films on Kickstarter for other filmmakers. I just found you two and you do a terrific job of describing the places you visit. I was considering a move to Merida but found the statistics of rain. I live in the Pacific NW and after more than 70 years here, want to escape the rain. I have been many times to SE Asia and I can take heat and humidity. Maybe Oaxaca. I went to Merida six months ago to figure out if I want to live there . To hot but I loved it until I came across Queretero. It’s Merida with the perfect weather. Safe travels

Catching up on a lot of your videos! Everything sounds awesome except the weather!lol… We’ll have to look into what it’s like during the winter months. So far we love Guadalajara and Querétaro! Perfect weather and for the most part we feel pretty safe overall.
cool, thanks for watching them! winter months can also be pretty hot and humid, just not as much as the spring-summer months. We've been there in January before and it was about 85-90 degrees farenheit most days.

Sorry for taking so long to respond! We are glad that our videos have been helpful. This saturday (8/7/2021) we are going Live on UA-cam to discuss this topic in case you'd like to join! But to answer your question right now, one of us is working remotely and the other is managing the UA-cam channel. We are hoping to have a couple of sources of income such as the youtube channel, remote work, or work in Mexico. We are hoping the UA-cam channel grow to be able to help us out financially by next year. If it doesn't then we would have to figure out how to fund and maintain this beautiful lifestyle we are currently blessed with.

@@EatBailaTravel FYI, as Mexican citizens, you could also move to Spain for 2 years & become naturalized there - unless the law there has changed, of course you should double-check this info - giving you one of the world's top passports. at that point, you could give up US citizenship to avoid US taxes on income earned outside USA while keeping the same high level of travel freedom as Americans. most of the world doesn't tax income earned outside the country. USA is almost unique in taxing worldwide income of non-resident citizens. a small east African country, Eritrea, is the only other place to do so - afaik. you could also go ahead & denaturalize now. but, if you did that you'd need to get a visa to visit USA.

During my years of traveling I remember the hottest time being in Chicago because there was no ac where I stayed and it was in the peak of summer 🌞 You covered a lot of important points of potentially living in the city, good job 👏 I like that you cover that Merida has a lot of fresh healthy produce, By the way I watched an episode of the Yucatán on chonicles Netflix and they talk about how they raise their pigs With extreme care and feed them very healthy foods which makes cochinita healthier and delicious 🌮👍 Saludos a ambos ✌️

Great video guys (as always). If it wasn't for the summer heat, I'd be looking for a place to stay in Merida! I visited with my wife in January 2022 with already high expectations but wasn't expecting them to be surpassed so much. The climate in January is wonderful and the city is one of the coolest I have ever been to (out of around 60 countries visited). It reminds me of all the best bits of Barcelona, but even nicer. The people are incredibly friendly, there is amazing art on every corner and the food...... OMG the food! I had watched a Netflix documentary that featured the restaurant Manjar Blanco and their Cochinita Pibil dish (mentioned in another comment). If you visit Merida and like pork - it is an absolute must, I have never tasted anything like it!

Merida is a great city!! We highly encourage you to check it out for an extended amount of time. Right now during the pandemic it is not same but still a calm and beautiful city.

Congratulations, looks like a nice place. Keep us posted throughout the year so we know what the inclement weather is like in particular June through August is what I’m most interested in learning about.
We love Merida, which is saying a lot because we don't like big cities. So, small town Progreso, or Chicxulub, is near the top of our list for a place to retire to. I am solo jealous that you got pulpo for dinner and I had a peanut butter sandwich! Seriously though, we are strongly considering the Orizaba area, primarily because it is a cooler. Which brings up dancing. Salsa is nice, but danzon is life. In Veracruz you can dance danzon every night! Give more consideration to Veracruz. I had trouble sleeping in Merida, but my wife said the nights were so much more pleasant than the 5 years she spent in Iraq...and safer too. Which brings up security. I have never felt uncomfortable or unsafe in Merida. I've been plenty of places in Mexico, Brasil, even Costa Rica where I said to my wife, "We are out of here now!" I never felt that way in Merida or Progreso. If you like big city advantages and can deal with the heat, Merida is one of our favorites.
We loved Veracruz the food is amazing the music is beautiful, and nature is so green! Out of all the places we were able to visit in Veracruz I would love to live Orizaba. It is way smaller than Merida and the temperature is great but we are still on the hunt of a future home. Hopefully at some point we will figure it out. Danzón is such beautiful music we love going to the Puerto of Veracruz and watch the danzón socials at the park. Sleeping in Merida is very difficult especially when Jenny and I are opposites when it comes to room temperature. I love to sleep in the cold and she loves to sweat while she sleeps. 😢 ok I’m joking she doesn’t like to sweat but at the room temperature she likes to sleep in I feel like I’m melting. Progreso is nice because you get a beautiful breeze at night but it is growing tremendously I hope it doesn’t become the next riviera maya.

I stumbled on your video because I am going to Merida the first week of July for my bday. Going with my bf and we too are from Chicago! Did you guys decide if you are moving there? Honestly, the more I look into it the more I want to move there. Not to mention it is an easy talk for us since we work remotely from home. So we travel. I know we could handle the heat. We just got back 2 weeks ago from Dubai. Heat was 105-115. It was 🔥 i love it though. Subcribed. Looking forward to seeing more from you guys!
Hey Everett! Thanks for commenting and welcome to EBT! 🤗 we are thinking we still definitely want to live in Merida, the question we haven’t yet answered is when will that be? As we travel and explore Mexico, we realize there is a lot to see and learn before we settle into just one place. So we plan to experiment with different cities at least through the rest of 2021, vlogging along the way, and perhaps making our way back to Merida later down the line. Love that you are taking advantage of your remote work and travel! It would be great to meet up at some point! Chi-town love 💙❤️

Julia Florida You should definitely visit Quintana Roo, Campeche and also Chiapas. There is so much to see. The natives are very friendly, respect their customs and traditions even if you do not agree with them. As a guest in their home, always be polite and you will have a marvellous time. I have also visited Veracruz many times and still have friends there. But yes, spread your wings and explore.

If you're going to try octopus for the first time it has to be from the place we recommended in this video. The only issue is that once you have this octopus you'll have trouble eating octopus anywhere else. Glad you enjoy our videos feel free to offer any suggestions in the comments or on instagram. would it be too much to suggest having more than one option? maybe have your home in Merida but, travel in the year's 2 or 3 hottest months. central highlands in that hottest time sounds enticing. just an idea. but, you should certainly look at more places before deciding - which is already your plan, no?
Sorry for the late response David! Yes that is our plan to keep looking just to make sure we choose a spot we would like to stay and live for an extended amount of time. We love your idea! Leaving to Merida during it's hottest months would be great in order to change up our lifestyle once in a while. We will be checking out Queretaro very soon for that exact reason.

It was too hot and humid for me. I took my first flight out of Merida to Mexico City, and have been fling since. Acapulco spoiled this Chicago woman, but now I live in Queretaro. Many cities hav e colonias also.
Do yourself a favor, check out la Ermita and San Sebastian. Most tourists don't get down here unless its Hanal Pixan. Very colonial, family friendly and famous for panuchos and salbutes.
Merida overall is super safe and quite. During covid there’s was an 11pm curfew so we would be back home by 10pm. But when we visited in 2019 we were walking back at 2-3am with absolutely no problem.
Seriously thinking of moving to Mexico and Merida is a city I'm considering. The only thing that scares me is the heat and humidity everyone talks about.
One couple lived near Cancun and they said they had problems with mold due to the humidity and started having health problems. They moved away from the coast to a better place in Mexico with less humidity. Merida would have the same problem I would think being so close to the coast and having a hot and humid climate. If one wanted to live in a humid climate you might want to get a dehumidifier or system in your house or apartment.
That’s a very good point we didn’t think about that. Living so close to the ocean sounds ideal until you have to deal with humidity, salt, hurricanes and so many other issues.
Does Merida allways have white skys instead of blue? When we passed by there, the skys were white and in alot of videos including this one the skys look white.

First thing is a no-brainer the heat is not as bad as in Puerto Rico it's very similar second you guys are young and if you have the income to make the move just do it!
An hour away from Merida there is an area called "el anillo de los cenotes" the ring of the cenotes. In this area there a lot of cenotes. We specifically went to "Cenotes Santa Barbara "they charge around 10-12$USD and it includes three cenotes. The cenotes are in a big complex and you either take a small train ride to them or ride bikes. Just make sure you don't wear sunblock or bug repellent when going to a cenote because it contaminates the water. Enjoy!
Unfortunately there aren't a direct flights from Merida to Chicago. There's only flights to Miami, Houston and Atlanta. The best option is to go to Cancun and take a flight from Cancun to Chicago. They are normally cheap we payed 140$ for a one way flight.
have i not commented here before? the obvious answer: live in Merida but, travel (to Queretaro or to Northern Mexico - for the beef) in the hottest months of the year. that's the best solution.
We haven’t quite decided as we’re still making our way through exploring the country, but are leaning towards Puerto Escondido or Queretaro right now. When we made this video we felt so sure Merida would be home but as we discover new places we get excited about other options!
Merida is lovely city and is very hot in the summer. So do not touch any stone or metal exposed to the tropical sun, and do not walk barefoot, your feet will get burnt. However, people should remember that Merida is in the hurricane zone, so from June to November, the city can be hit by very strong hurricanes. Also mosquitoes are a problem, so do a full research to ensure you will not be disappointed after a couple of years living there. Oh and the hot humidity means mold (mould), so if you have respiratory problems, then Merida may not be the place for you. If you can live with the negatives, Merida is a truly wonderful place. Still not as hot as Sonora in summertime though (and I have visited both in the summertime). You will definitely melt and sweat 24/7 there, whilst Palenque is so humid it is pointless trying to remain dry, handkerchiefs and hand towels will be saturated in a very short time.
Most of Merida is safe. We stayed and moved around in the north and north east of Merida and we felt safe at ALL times. We highly recommend those areas but next time we will explore other areas as well.
Eat Baila Travel is our brand and channel name, but we decided to include our names in the channel name also because it’s easier to search. With in-person conversations, we noticed it was sometimes challenging for people to catch the concept of a bilingual channel name and always needed to spell it out for them. @@EatBailaTravel I live in Cancún and weather is similar. Well yes, humidity and heat are breeding ground for mosquitos. Here they are very well kept under control by regular spraying of a substance that keeps them from reproducing, and it is non toxic for humans. I am sure they do the same in Mérida.

@@EatBailaTravel FYI, as Mexican citizens, you could also move to Spain for 2 years & become naturalized there - unless the law there has changed, of course you should double-check this info - giving you one of the world's top passports. at that point, you could give up US citizenship to avoid US taxes on income earned outside USA while keeping the same high level of travel freedom as Americans. most of the world doesn't tax income earned outside the country. USA is almost unique in taxing worldwide income of non-resident citizens. a small east African country, Eritrea, is the only other place to do so - afaik.
you could also go ahead & denaturalize now. but, if you did that you'd need to get a visa to visit USA.
you could apply the same skills at making videos for your channel over there.

Great video guys (as always). If it wasn't for the summer heat, I'd be looking for a place to stay in Merida! I visited with my wife in January 2022 with already high expectations but wasn't expecting them to be surpassed so much. The climate in January is wonderful and the city is one of the coolest I have ever been to (out of around 60 countries visited). It reminds me of all the best bits of Barcelona, but even nicer. The people are incredibly friendly, there is amazing art on every corner and the food...... OMG the food! I had watched a Netflix documentary that featured the restaurant Manjar Blanco and their Cochinita Pibil dish (mentioned in another comment). If you visit Merida and like pork - it is an absolute must, I have never tasted anything like it!

We love Merida, which is saying a lot because we don't like big cities. So, small town Progreso, or Chicxulub, is near the top of our list for a place to retire to. I am solo jealous that you got pulpo for dinner and I had a peanut butter sandwich! Seriously though, we are strongly considering the Orizaba area, primarily because it is a cooler. Which brings up dancing. Salsa is nice, but danzon is life. In Veracruz you can dance danzon every night! Give more consideration to Veracruz. I had trouble sleeping in Merida, but my wife said the nights were so much more pleasant than the 5 years she spent in Iraq...and safer too. Which brings up security. I have never felt uncomfortable or unsafe in Merida. I've been plenty of places in Mexico, Brasil, even Costa Rica where I said to my wife, "We are out of here now!" I never felt that way in Merida or Progreso. If you like big city advantages and can deal with the heat, Merida is one of our favorites.
We loved Veracruz the food is amazing the music is beautiful, and nature is so green! Out of all the places we were able to visit in Veracruz I would love to live Orizaba. It is way smaller than Merida and the temperature is great but we are still on the hunt of a future home. Hopefully at some point we will figure it out. Danzón is such beautiful music we love going to the Puerto of Veracruz and watch the danzón socials at the park. Sleeping in Merida is very difficult especially when Jenny and I are opposites when it comes to room temperature. I love to sleep in the cold and she loves to sweat while she sleeps. 😢 ok I’m joking she doesn’t like to sweat but at the room temperature she likes to sleep in I feel like I’m melting. Progreso is nice because you get a beautiful breeze at night but it is growing tremendously I hope it doesn’t become the next riviera maya.

I stumbled on your video because I am going to Merida the first week of July for my bday. Going with my bf and we too are from Chicago! Did you guys decide if you are moving there? Honestly, the more I look into it the more I want to move there. Not to mention it is an easy talk for us since we work remotely from home. So we travel.

As we travel and explore Mexico, we realize there is a lot to see and learn before we settle into just one place. So we plan to experiment with different cities at least through the rest of 2021, vlogging along the way, and perhaps making our way back to Merida later down the line. Love that you are taking advantage of your remote work and travel! It would be great to meet up at some point! Chi-town love 💙❤️

You should definitely visit Quintana Roo, Campeche and also Chiapas. There is so much to see. The natives are very friendly, respect their customs and traditions even if you do not agree with them. As a guest in their home, always be polite and you will have a marvellous time. I have also visited Veracruz many times and still have friends there. But yes, spread your wings and explore.

If you're going to try octopus for the first time it has to be from the place we recommended in this video. would it be too much to suggest having more than one option? maybe have your home in Merida but, travel in the year's 2 or 3 hottest months. central highlands in that hottest time sounds enticing. just an idea.

Sorry for the late response David! Yes that is our plan to keep looking just to make sure we choose a spot we would like to stay and live for an extended amount of time. We love your idea! Leaving to Merida during it's hottest months would be great in order to change up our lifestyle once in a while. We will be checking out Queretaro very soon for that exact reason.

It was too hot and humid for me. I took my first flight out of Merida to Mexico City, and have been fling since. Acapulco spoiled this Chicago woman, but now I live in Queretaro. Many cities hav e colonias also.

Do yourself a favor, check out la Ermita and San Sebastian. Most tourists don't get down here unless its Hanal Pixan. Very colonial, family friendly and famous for panuchos and salbutes.

how was your experience walking around Centro at night like around 10pm-11pm? coming from restaurants and bars?
Merida overall is super safe and quite. During covid there’s was an 11pm curfew so we would be back home by 10pm. But when we visited in 2019 we were walking back at 2-3am with absolutely no problem.

One couple lived near Cancun and they said they had problems with mold due to the humidity and started having health problems. They moved away from the coast to a better place in Mexico with less humidity. Merida would have the same problem I would think being so close to the coast and having a hot and humid climate. If one wanted to live in a humid climate you might want to get a dehumidifier or system in your house or apartment.
That’s a very good point we didn’t think about that. Living so close to the ocean sounds ideal until you have to deal with humidity, salt, hurricanes and so many other issues.
@@EatBailaTravel Yeah hurricanes, that means power outages in the heat and humidity and no air conditioning unless you have a generator.
Does Merida allways have white skys instead of blue? When we passed by there, the skys were white and in alot of videos including this one the skys look white.

None of them but places near the ocean tend to be cooler because of the ocean breeze. Progreso at night has an ocean breeze that helps ease the heat.

How expensive is air conditioning in Merida?
Electricity can be very expensive in Merida and Mexico in general. Most People only use air conditioning at night to avoid high costs.
Are the city streets wheelchair friendly? Are wheelchairs obstructed to slide well down the sidewalks?

Which Cenote is that? I’ll be in Merida in a week
An hour away from Merida there is an area called "el anillo de los cenotes" the ring of the cenotes. In this area there a lot of cenotes. We specifically went to "Cenotes Santa Barbara "they charge around 10-12$USD and it includes three cenotes. The cenotes are in a big complex and you either take a small train ride to them or ride bikes. Just make sure you don't wear sunblock or bug repellent when going to a cenote because it contaminates the water. Enjoy!
How much is the plane ticket to Merida from Chicago?
Unfortunately there aren't a direct flights from Merida to Chicago. There's only flights to Miami, Houston and Atlanta. The best option is to go to Cancun and take a flight from Cancun to Chicago. They are normally cheap we payed 140$ for a one way flight.
have i not commented here before? the obvious answer: live in Merida but, travel (to Queretaro or to Northern Mexico - for the beef) in the hottest months of the year. that's the best solution.

We haven’t quite decided as we’re still making our way through exploring the country, but are leaning towards Puerto Escondido or Queretaro right now. When we made this video we felt so sure Merida would be home but as we discover new places we get excited about other options!
Merida is lovely city and is very hot in the summer. So do not touch any stone or metal exposed to the tropical sun, and do not walk barefoot, your feet will get burnt. However, people should remember that Merida is in the hurricane zone, so from June to November, the city can be hit by very strong hurricanes. Also mosquitoes are a problem, so do a full research to ensure you will not be disappointed after a couple of years living there. Oh and the hot humidity means mold (mould), so if you have respiratory problems, then Merida may not be the place for you. If you can live with the negatives, Merida is a truly wonderful place. Still not as hot as Sonora in summertime though (and I have visited both in the summertime). You will definitely melt and sweat 24/7 there, whilst Palenque is so humid it is pointless trying to remain dry, handkerchiefs and hand towels will be saturated in a very short time.
Yes the place is super hot we would love to travel to Sonora someday!

Health care is great in Merida. Expensive for private care but very good health care.

Most of Merida is safe. We stayed and moved around in the north and north east of Merida and we felt safe at ALL times. We highly recommend those areas but next time we will explore other areas as well.

Why did you change your name from eat nails travel?
Eat Baila Travel is our brand and channel name, but we decided to include our names in the channel name also because it’s easier to search. With in-person conversations, we noticed it was sometimes challenging for people to catch the concept of a bilingual channel name and always needed to spell it out for them. We were worried about people not being able to find us if they searched us, so we left it as “Jenny and Kevin” to make it easier. More recently we wanted the Eat Baila Travel part back in. Still feeling a little indecisive though. What’s your opinion? Do you like the channel name? Would it be better to leave it as just “Jenny and Kevin” or just “Eat Baila Travel”?

Here they are very well kept under control by regular spraying of a substance that keeps them from reproducing, and it is non toxic for humans. I am sure they do the same in Mérida.
