- If you’re traveling to Hong Kong, here are our most useful tips we used daily! Hong Kong has fully reopened + lifted mask mandates! 🥳
• HK is one of the most convenient cities to get around; your Octopus metro card allows you to pay for not just access to the trains, but the ferry, trams, cabs + even at some stores + restaurants!
• you should have cash on hand; you’ll need it for taxis + for many vendor stalls or small local restaurants.
➢ if you want to cross from the Kowloon side to the island side; look for speciality cross harbor taxis that will take you across.
• you can use @uber to schedule or call Ubers or HK cabs.
• Google Lens will be helpful in deciphering signs + menus, as well as communicating what you want to say. It’s helpful to have useful sayings pulled up to use at any time; like where is the bathroom in both Cantonese + Mandarin- though some spots also speak English as well!
• download @whatsapp - this be helpful in booking reservations + calls in Hong Kong.
• you can find addresses written in Chinese to show your cab driver on Open Rice and on Google Maps, which actually can say the address in Chinese with a speaker button next to the address! (so useful)!
• marry a Jeromy so they can do everything for you 🤣
did we miss any tips?

They don't speak Mandarin in Hong Kong, so having Mandarin phrases would pretty much be useless... and don't worry, you'll be perfectly okay getting around with knowing only English, most Hongkongers speak it to at least a basic level :)
Yep, many kids take English Class, or tutoring
Well your right
just learn the slurs in cantonese
@_ItzMegan_the main language is still Cantonese. It is more useful. Only 50% in hk speak mandarin and 97% speak Cantonese. High differences
we speak cantonese here (but a lot of young people speak english too!)
I am from Hong Kong and this just made me happy when you mentioned octopus card
haha real ones know!
Same here! I moved to the United Kingdom 3 years ago and I missed the times when we used the octopus card, love your channel btw❤
Yaaaa
Lemme tell you this…I’m also from Hong Kong❤
I'm coming to work in Hong Kong next weekend. I'm so excited!!🎉
You don't "need" an Octopus card to use the MTR, but it's the best option for most.
from a hongkonger, depends on how long you’re staying ! if you’re staying for only 1-3 days, i wouldn’t say you would need it lol
We are only here for 4 days. 2 days in today, and we don't have any idea what to use in MTR aside from the octopus card. Care to share?
@@acmv71192 you can buy tickets in the mtr station
@@acmv71192 for only one trip per ticket
You can use scan code and you can buy the ticket for MTR in Hong Kong. If you’re not live in long time if you want to live a long times you can buy it, and when you go back to your country, you can return back to their counter. They will give you back your money. Very easy is it I am from India
I live in Hong Kong and can I say that Even in local markets people speak little English so it is not necessary to learn Cantonese phrases but if you can that’s awesome. Also people are quite friendly so even of they don’t know English they will try their best to help you.
We dpnt😢speak mandarin we speak Cantonese
Some do, but most don't
Cantonese is okay for Hong Kong am also speaking, Cantonese am from India
@@gsh1970I am a fellow hker, and I can confirm this is completely false, please use either English or cantonese please
Yeah we mostly speak Cantonese, and mainland China uses Mandarin more. But the main languages are English, Chinese, and Cantonese. (Btw there’s English everywhere we have to learn English in school)
@@natalieaviationplays how nice, neglecting chinese is not languages theory.
bc, cantonese is part of the chinese languages category and so is mandarin, yet they have different kinds of pinyin, e.g. we(cantonese, hker, macanese) use numeric system, while the majority(the ones who uses mandarin(taiwanese not included)) uses lines and dashes. and taiwanese people have japanese pinyin system in place even so that they also use mandarin. we are all different languages after all even if we are chinese, this also means that chinese is a big languages category like germanic languages or romantic languages.
so please, remember this, don't use the word chinese unless it's the wide category of those lots of languages
I just got back from a trip to Hong Kong. It was absolutely amazing! Best part was I could finally utilize my cantonese. I dont get to use it too much outside my home here in the US so to be able to use it like I would english was such a surreal experience 😅. Plus their public transportation system is UNIVERSES ahead of what we have
as a Hong Kong person we call it the MTR and most 7-11s use octopus card
and some taxis can take octopus card too
Yehhh like
Circle K, 7 11, restaurants, octopus is literally a credit card
@@MasonTheFurryCat fr tho
and it is cheap. only like 100 HKD one octopus? @@MarkerHealthcliff
What apps do those people use other than WhatsApp?
Yeah same here
I live in hong kong even though I'm not a Chinese person lol
One tip. Learn Cantonese it will be harder to learn but easier to communicate
I’m a Hong kong person and take the bus is cheaper, going to tai Po is nice because there is a place called “cheap lab” is really cheap the logo is a girl.there will be a lot of stuff that are cheap which come up to 1-20HKD,and going to Kowloon is good too to get food I suggest you going to only the place that are big and walking around can make you feel comfortable but a lot of people smoke so watch out for ur lungs!
thanks for the tips! :)
A fun fact: Hong Kong has very confusing bus stuff, for example some Hong Kong Island buses go to Kowloon or NT but Kowloon buses go to HK island as well
Majority of Hong Kong 🇭🇰 people speak English fluently, since it was a British colony for so long. Mandarin is useless over there since everyone speaks either English or Cantonese.
the ferry and the bus gave me flashback about my hong kong trip when i was 3yr
Hope it was a great trip! The ferry and bus are such a cool classic vibe haha
No, just Cantonese and English. Saving Mandarin phrases on your phone for use in Hong Kong is not so much different from having French phrases prepared for travelling to England.
Love coming across random snaps. I’ve wondered if Hong Kong would be fully open! Great vid
That looks interesting 🫡
I was in Hong Kong back in November of 2019. Enjoyed it. Even during the protests. I wonder how it is now because I'm itching to visit again.
i am cantonese and you basically dont need credit cards cuz octopus now accepts everywhere(exc. they're cash only)
