I'm just so glad to see someone who got the money but not turning into a snob, furthermore sharing some of it with others, just being natural, giving tips and advice to the other of us who can't afford to buy everything to see if it was worth it or not.
      It just makes me happy.
I have seen so many other "nouveau riche" types turning into snobs who say "it has to be that ultra-mega expensive thing", whether it be Purdey shotguns for $110,000 or Raymond Weil wristwatches, or as in this case photography equipment.
Keep the videos coming; I'll be watching...

Hard to beat m4/3 in terms of size, and quality. Part of my switch to m4/3 was inspired by your videos talking about size and weight savings. Now the rebuilding continues! Thanks again for taking the time to prove that size doesn't/does matter!

not mentioned Lumix 25mm f1.7 often on sale for @150.00 and the Lumix 42.5mm f1.7 another very small compact lens. I use these two lenses for low available light instead of my excellent but much heavier Leica12mm-60mm f2.8-f4.0.

I bought the Olympus M. Zuiko 45mm 1.8 and it quickly became my go-to lens. Light and small... yes. However, mine is pleasantly sharp and the bokeh is strong enough to create a nice separation. Great video, by the way. I love the A-B comparison of moderately priced lens versus kinda-pricey lens. When you see them back to back - it makes sense. Thanks for the work you put into the video.

Loved your positive attitude and presentation! My favorite travel combo is the Oly 9-18mm, Pana 12-32mm and the nimble 17/1.8 for low light. With an Olympus camera and their FL-LM3 flash, there's little one will miss for casual photography. There still remains the perfect light for video, which remains to be invented.

I still rather go M43 with bigger lens then go Sony crop sensor. Sony does not have a crop body with dual card slots.
Also Olympus OMD E-M1 line have great grips. And Panasonic GH and G line also have nice grips.

I really like your video, excellent intro to micro 4/3, totally agree. Everything micro should by definition be small, hopefully also lightweight. Only critissism , you did not mention bloggers and tourists use the extendable selfie stick, usually with a cellphone or an action camera because being handheld it is longer away than the one you used in your video and you don't need to carry around a tripod which is heavier and cumbersome. You did not mention that lenses with large apertures are more expensive and heavy because they need more glass and are more difficult to make, the advantage of these lenses is that each stop more open means you need half the light, which when working with only daylight is a great advantage.

Great vid! I'd throw my name in for the Nocticron but I sold mine for the same reason you're giving yours away. The 14mm is another good lens and next to the body caps, the smallest in the system. I really wish Panasonic would bring back the GM5, mine is showing it's age... and I agree the GX85 is too big to replace it.

I loved this. Like you, I'm not afraid of vlogging with a tripod. I'm using my G9, and it's just too damn big for an old guy like me to hold out in front of me. I use my Oben mini-tripod on my desk if I'm vlogging from my office, or I have a nice full-size monopod that I can carry around instead of a tripod.
I mostly use a 25mm Pana 1.7 or my 42.5mm 1.7. I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on that Oly 17mm, though. I think it's a perfect lens for vlogging, Thanks for the great content.

Its a great camera BUT to make it practical, you have to ADD a screen so you can see yourself, attachments for audio, flash, viewfinder etc and by the time all those attachments are screwed on, it's bigger and heavier than a full frame Sony. I wish they would update the Sony RX1Rii with a flip out screen

I have a Lumix GM5. I prefer the size of the GM5 over my Olympus EM1 Mark II, but I love the controls and 5 axis image stabilization of the Olympus. I can take night shots hand-held at ISO 200. I bought it used for $650 and couldn't be happier. I showed a friend with a newer full-frame Nikon DSLR some of the night shots zoomed-in and he couldn't get over the images and size and weight of the Olympus.

I hope the 42.5 you gave away is giving someone a lot of joy. It is one of those I wish I had it type lenses and had I seen this video back in May I would have applied for it. Sometimes small is best, but when a lens has special character I don’t mind extra weight at all. This has to be the best overview of small MFT lens options on the internet. I always appreciate your focus on practicality Markus. Not enough reviewers spend enough time in the real world as you do.

Markus, lately there have been interesting development on M43 auto focus lenses, some Chinese companies are making them! There are two from Yongnuo, the 25mm 1.7 and 42.5mm 1.7 and they're like $130 new, while Xiaomi Yi has one 42.5mm 1.7 with a Macro switch and it's like $100! In terms of ultra-wide angle, Laowa makes 6mm Zero-D rectilinear lens for landscape, although it's expensive at $500, but it is TINY. Maybe you could updated version of this video with these lenses. A lot of us LOVE the GM1 & GM5 and we like small and cheap lenses! And there are only maybe 2-3 UA-camr that like smaller cameras, and you're the best of them!

Agree it is an excellent “fast” lens. However for street photography, you just cannot beat the tiny Lumix 12-32mm lens because of the built in lens stabilization coupled with the excellent IBIS on the GX85 make this combo a winner for walk around photography.

Def trying to stay on budget & buying a new camera because my Olympus OM-D E-M10 iii was just too complicated to use when you're running the whole show on your own, also the view screen doesnt flip out correctly to see yourself while filming. After watching your videos this week, I have since purchased the Lumix G100 (thank you for your video about this camera so helpful!). Question? Should I use my exisiting lenses from my Olympus OM-D E-M10 iii the Kit lens: 14-42mm | M.Zuiko Dig 14-150mm or the kit lense that comes with the Lumix G100? Or search for a good deal on the 45mm f1.8 Olympus M Zuiko? Don't know if you'll see this question on such an older video 😂 but thought I would ask. You're videos have been so helpful!!!! On the other hand… so I got the Pana 20mm used, it's OK. But it turns out I never use it. Why? Well… either I use Z Cam E2C or Panasonic GH5 on tripods, with field monitors… so the lenses are not the piece of gear taking most space in the case anyways. And when I'm out with my Oly E-PL9, the Pana 14-42 is enough for me (If I want to take real pictures, I use the MeiKe 35mm with that camera). But I guess if I had to pick one small prime, I'd go for the Pana 20mm.
Yesterday I did a shoot out with my GH5 + Oly 12-100 f4 PRO IS vs Oly E-PL9 with MeiKe 35mm manual prime. It turned out that for some reasons I take better pictures with the latter combination. Part of this is that I use focus peaking with the manual lens and it makes it so much easier to design your sharp areas in the picture. This was astonishing for me, since my first camera was a SLR (here's a picture ello.co/nielso/post/ekjsuezuvelenrlxtfztoa), and for a long time I used DSLRs, not mirrorless, thinking I wouldn't even ever adjust to a electronic viewfinder…

Based on this video and a couple of your others, I picked up a GM1 and three of the lenses you recommended here to better pursue my photography hobby. I'm a novice and originally bought a Nikon D5600, but frankly found myself leaving it home for special events and vacation trips because of the systems' size. That g85 is a regular camera size, but by putting the small sensor in a normal body with a huge stabilizer, you can get really stable shots which is important for vlogging and also great for photos. You don't need huge 1400 dollar lenses, but the smallest ones have some big issues. That 20mm pancake is so tiny and cheap, but they just couldn't fit a good focusing system in it.

Nowaday, you can see the lack of stabilisation, kinda good for photography and static video, but really not sufficient for vlogging

I've been looking for something similar to my Canon G12 point-and-shoot camera, which has taken tens of thousands of pictures but is showing its age. However, most point-and-shoots don't have a screen that swivels or tilts, which is a must for me. After seeing this video, I will be taking a hard look at the GX850.

Panasonic has really lost the plot with the G9. I don't care how many features it has, there's just no excuse for a m4/3 camera being bigger & heavier than FF. Same with the GX9. No excuse for being bigger & heavier than APSC.

    • @MarkusPix
      @MarkusPix  Рік тому +1

I totally agree. I think they did that so it can record 4K video for hours without overheating, but I don't do that. The G7 is the biggest I'll go, and it's still very light.

Bigger ones are easier to handle; better controls and these bigger cameras have a more familiar shape/weight closer to what a lot of people are accustomed to. If you have a lot of m4/3s glass and want something chunkier and more feature-rich to use in the studio without investing in other systems, you have an option.
A larger camera is also nice if you are using larger lenses; many people find value in body/lens weight/size balance and some m4/3's lenses are pretty big. My girl's 5D with the pancake 40mm is really awkward, while my SD Quattro/SD9 work great with Sigma's typically huge lenses.

Olympus cameras are too clunky, don't have the features that Lumix has, not really made for video and the menus are terrible. I paid $1,800 for an Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark III because it was supposed to be so awesome. Yes the stabilization was somewhat better (but not stellar) but what amazed me was how terrible the video image quality was for that price, they are still using old way outdated sensors.

Most camera/tech UA-camrs repeat the same new product marketing guff because their depth of practical knowledge is lacking and they don't want to stray from the consensus.
Your videos stand out because you use your years of experience where I'm sure you've seen countless trends and fads come and go to give us straight, simple and practical advice.
You give credit where its due to some pieces of expensive kit yet you're happy to bust myths with regards to using much cheaper equipment while still achieving great results.
As a fellow UA-camr who works on a tight equipment budget, I'm really glad I've come across your channel and keep up the great work. 👍🏾
