  • This may SHOCk y'all but I have not seen this Wes Craven film from 1989. I, having watched this, see it as a celebration/poking fun/satirizing of '80s horror tropes--I definitely see that as part of Craven's intent. Shocker (1989) is a delicious bag of mixed nuts that some people may be allergic to... not gonna lie, I do wish we could have seen where this would have gone as a franchise. Wes said he wanted to remake it and even was onboard for one in the '00s or 2010s. I feel like there's a way to revive it with even more appeal (*cue hissing from the "all remakes are bad even for movies that aren't considered that good" crowd*). I really do not see this as an A Nightmare on Elm Street ripoff...
My sickness-addled mind is making me ramble but I stand by everything here!

On the Shout/Scream Factory Collector's Edition of the movie. On the audio commentary for it with Wes Craven he said as he was. Basically writing an making this movie he was going through a lets just say messy divorce. So any inconsistencies for things that don't seem to work can be contributed to that. So in between directing an adjusting for script as needed. He was basically dealing with divorce things like going to divorce attorneys an Divorce Court. So yea he sadly could focus his attention on the movie an he was not in the best of moods when making this movie. On the audio commentary he said he was working his anger out in the. Movie in the scenes like the kill scenes an things.
So basically he had full control over the movie he was. Just dealing with a messy divorce at the same time. He also said he would only change one thing in this movie. That is the special effects when it came to the one killer an the electricity elements. Other than that he had no problem with this movie.
Now the thing about her necklace he said he always had a destination with medallions. Going back to his first movie The last House on the Left an in this movie. The necklaces where the medallions for the movies.
Now on the audio commentary for the movie The Last House On The Left. Wes Craven said when he wrote the movie. He was thinking this movie won't be that bad but as soon as they started to film it. He was like O crap this is way darker then I thought it was when I wrote it. Then he was like after this movie I am never going to make a movie this dark ever again.
Now if you didn't see it already I recommend the movies My Soul To Take 2010. Also written an directed by Wes Craven when he was not going through a messy divorce or anything.

It was actually genius using electricity to jump bodies and travel because the human body creates electricity in the brain and using the satellite dish to jump through tv channels because it uses electricity to send the transmissions over the airwaves

It was 89 and a lot of factors contributed to it not doing good in theaters, like the rise of the conservative Moral Majority and suburban Moms picketing and calling for boycotts of horror movies, and the over saturation of horror movies in the 80’s, but it became a cult classic on the cable tv and video rental market and with metalheads with the soundtrack

Thank you for all your comments and input! Yeah, what was happening culturally at the time is important to keep in mind...like you said Moral Majority and those suburban moms were very pervasive at the time (the lady who tried to get Married...with Children off the air comes to mind--despite that show not being one that kids should be watching and she could have simply changed the channel). Plus, again like you said, horror movies were oversaturated in the '80s what with the "Big Three" franchises already having so many movies out plus everything else, which not only created a fatigue but also, as we know the MPA was cracking down. But the market being saturated with slashers starring attractive teenagers/young adults probably made it hard for certain movies to stand out.
Also, this was within the era of satanic panic so I'm sure that played into the other things we've discussed. My next Halloween reaction is for a movie that I feel comments on these things and I'm sure was definitely a target of such scrutiny as well. It's also very metal--kinda the major part of its premise.
I also agree it was quite brilliant to have Pinker jumping from body to body using electricity, as possession movies had been around awhile but this gave it a unique twist that made sense with some degree of scientific reasoning (sans electricity demon/devil/god he did the ceremony with).
This is a really fun movie! Again, thank you for your interest in it. I think it's a good movie to talk about beyond the usual "Elm Street ripoff" discussion I see.

Well think how dumb cops can be sometimes and how they handle things, there’s a reason why so many innocent people have been convicted and executed for crimes they didn’t commit, in so many police departments people who were dumb jocks in high school are hired because of that or through family connections, a cop in my city that just shot and killed an innocent woman who had called the cops herself, was found out to have had strikes on his record from previous police departments and a dishonorable discharge from the military and was only hired because he had family connections in the police department

This movie is okay, not great, just okay, I think it's a sidestep to another horror movie, House 3, which is much better, based along the same lines. You should watch House 3 after this, you'll enjoy House 3 better than this one.

Interesting...thank you for the suggestion! I'll see what I can do--I have a list I'm trying to power through this month. 😊
