I bought a black dial version. It was one of the the greatest moments of my life as I saved 10 years to buy that watch. I flew from Amsterdam to London and took a coffee after 3 hours went back. Now I can do a little research and hopefully find out what what she is worth.
Great that will fetch you some cash. *I used to be a collector, but I liquidated my collection to venture into real estate. In January, I acquired homes in Malibu for $55million, and the returns on investment far exceed what I earned as a collector.
How did you grow your portfolio to $55m, I'm impressed, I have a lump sum in the bank, the rates are not impressive so I'm moving it, what's your cash flow like?
I have been fortunate to own both. My preference is for the 16700. It is more comfortable on the wrist and benefits from the quick set date facility. I am usually only tracking one other timezone so the rotatable bezel is fine for that.
So this is a simple choice for you between the two? I have been having this debate for some time now. Any additional insight would be great! Side note: I do have a smaller wrist
I talked to my Rolex AD watchmaker about the 3175 vs. 3185 movements. He said they are from the same Rolex series (31XX) and are the same in terms of quality, accuracy, durability, and reliability. The only differences are in the functions. It's like comparing the 3130 to the 3135. Same quality, different functions.
Bien cordialement.
Great vid and good topic. I prefer the 16710 for the easier and more functional usability that comes with the master 2 over the master. Other than that it’s more the aesthetic you have given the slight changes in size and fit on the wrist I guess. I couldn’t see myself wearing this watch while cycling.
Such comprehensive knowledge as always. I think he should buy and enjoy the model he wants but I'd definitely wear a G-Shock for the outdoor activities as Austin suggested. A preceramic Rolex is tough if well maintained but why risk the damage?
A late 90’s 16700 is the end of the line of the original GMT. That is the one to buy. It has Quick set date and a simple GMT function. Do you really need to track 3 time zones on the fly? In theory people want it but in practice they don’t use it. Most people don’t know how to use the 3 Tim zone function.
Great video with super useful information on one of the lesser known references. It's a real shame that this movement style (ie. permanently coupled GMT hand) was pretty much universally discontinued. Excellent, detailed information....thanks!...only downside to the 16700 is the crazy prices (although not much different from the 16710). The 16700 will be my first buy if the watch market ever crashes....then the 1016 Explorer...(good luck!) Finally: excellent points about the non-originality factor of the Coke bezel on the 16700...luckily the inserts are pretty easy to swap and are 100% compatible with the 16710. I would also want the upgraded click spring so that the bezel rotated with even ease on both directions.
I bike with modern GMT II, Daytona, and Speedmasters for two hours every day. So modern pieces are totally fine. Just don't drop them into hard surfaces. I don't have direct experience with neo-vintage movements though but I think they'd also be fine since my understanding is that people 50 years ago were more active than us today, and Rolex were specifically targeting adventurous people in those eras.
I'm loving this deep dive on the GMT. Of course, I see it as yet more convincing from Austin that I should go for the 16710 instead of the 16760. But I think I have my heart set on traveling to Japan and getting a peach of a 16760. :)
The 16700 is thinner than the 16710 but the 16710 is still a pretty thin watch. I'm sensitive to watches being too thick and I owned a 16710 and thought of it as thin for its type.
You can’t set the 1/2 hour time zones on the 16710, you‘ll be either half hour early, or half hour late. But you can on the 16700. That makes the 16700 more versatile to me.
OK, try to set the 2nd time zone to ie. Mumbai local time. You can’t do that on the 16710. But on the 16700, because the bezel has 120 clicks. The bezel on the 16710 has 24 clicks only. If it had 48 clicks, it would make the 16710 the perfect watch.
@@vincet6730 The bezel on 16710 has 120 clicks so you can set it to whatever timezone you want. Plus it's great for timing things. The 16710 is a perfect watch indeed. I think you mixed that up with the current, ceramic GMT Master II which has 24 clicks.
Gotta say my 16713 root beer makes me grin every time I look at it. The dial is a chameleon, when inside the printing looks black and outside it looks tan. However, two tone at work can be a bit shouty. Get the 16570 Explorer 2, love mine.
The 16700 is not a millimeter thinner than the 16710. More like 0.5mm. You can see the difference if you hold them side by side but on wrist you really don't notice any difference.
I keep rewatching this vid. I've wanted a 16710 so bad...but I found a 16700 that is really amazing; can't decide if I can live with that fixed GMT hand. Or if I'd like a thinner case? Will it wear different/feel different on the wrist? And for the same cost?. I thought a cal. 3175 would be at least $1,000 - $1,500 less all else being equal. Is $11.5 w/ B&P a bit high? U-serial, "Swiss" only dial. Bob's and WatchCharts value it at $9-$10,000
I'd say $11.5 is a tad high, but if it's never been polished and in good shape, I might consider it. I can understand the feeling of being torn between a 16710 and a 16700; I always kind of wanted a 16700, but not sure if the thinness is worth the mechanical and aesthetic limitations (no Coke option).
Hi Anthony, AD policies seem to vary by country, so it depends on where you are. I know Japan and the US are relatively lax about it, but they are more strict in the SE Asian countries.
@@watchsymposiumAustin is absolutely right. I can’t get other bezel insert other than the original that the watch came with from my RSC in Malaysia. However, one can always source them from the likes of ebay etc. just be knowledgeable enough when buying from such platform though
Hi Austin, Thanks for your informative videos. I have tried to find contact information for you without success. Unfortunately I have had no luck. I'm in Tokyo for another 2 days and would greatly appreciate your advice.🙏🙏🙏
I’m literally about to graduate and I have saved up $4,000 for a Rolex. I would like to buy a late model stainless steel Rolex from Japan 🇯🇵. My aim is for a Submariner, Date, GMT. Is this mission possible? Please help a student out of the best places in Japan 🇯🇵?
Congratulation on your graduation! The models you mention start at around 10 grand. You didn't mention it, but one of the best value SS Rolex professional models is the Ex.2 Ref. 16570. You're about halfway to one of those.
The lesson here is, if you are a collector, buy a Rolex, if you want accurate Time keeping, get a Casio or a Timex Quartz. If you want to see the watch in the dark, Timex Indiglo. If you want a watch that will last a nuclear winter, get a G Shock. I won't even get into the affordability aspect. How ironic, the irony wasn't lost on me.

I have a financial advisor (trader) she grows my liquid assets and I reinvest the weekly payouts back into real estate and long-term ETFs.
Sure, could you please share her name with me or any details so I can look her up online? Thanks!
She is well known as - Diana Leayani Lara. please do your own research.

Still the best UA-camr… the end of this video is the cherry on top
Hi there. The 16700 is the latest elegant, simple, slim GMT which has kept the spirit of the 6542.
A classic indeed, and the end of an era when they discontinued it!

@Austin so your choice would be the 16710 between the two? I would have to agree. Great content and would love to see more in the near future!
Great Vid Austin, I love my 16710 coke E from 1990 its the best watch I've ever owned so versatile can't bet a classic

Hey Austin, do you know if the 16570 had any differences in thickness during its production?
16700 is the one to get, classy, and quick set date is mandatory
How does one submit a request for a custom video?
the 16700 with a faded pepsi bezel is the epidom of class in my opinion. Like and old Porsche with original paint.

16700 is my favorite. I owned one and regret moving it on to this day. The “Magnum PI” GMT. Great video.
Magnum PI GMT was the 16750.

@vincet6730 what exactly do you mean? 16710 is superior over 16700 as in 16700 you can't adjust the GMT hand independently at all.

No dilemma. Both are great.
Come to where the pooridge is just right, 16710. The additional functionality and versatility is worth the tiny millimeter.

16700 black bezel insert "swiss only"

16700 is a hard watch to beat. I’ve always had a soft spot for it.
GMT 16700 the best bought in 1999 still. Going strong

The Coke 16710 is the best choice.
It screams for a G-Shock 5610U (shows local and GMT at the same time). Robust. Atomic time.
